Re: [MBZ] One bar pressure warm oil

2012-05-24 Thread Dan Penoff
M117 engines can be a dangerous thing due to the potential for head bolt thread
failure, which necessitates drilling out and installing threaded inserts
(Helicoils) to fix. Part of this operation involves the use of a special MB
jig, as the head bolt holes are not 90 degrees perpendicular to the surface of
the block.

This point has been debated to death. The 'upside down R4 will not last' is an
Internet phenomena that is often repeated with slim factual support. Swaps have
been made for decades with perfectly acceptable results.

Theory is the small hole or X (if there is one) on the front should be up. Oil
splashes around and collects in the hole - it then drips down onto the shaft,
lubricating the bearing and seal. A GM compressor can be reclocked to maintain
this orientation as desired. There is enough evidence to my mind that this is
not required for a long lived R4. Some newer designs don't even have this
'feature'. Keep the correct amount of oil in the system at all times. If you
have a freon leak, make sure your oil levels are maintained when you recharge.
Run the system monthly to maintain lubrication. The oil miscibility of the
freon in an R4 may be more important than in other designs but that does not
mean a GM R4 will not work on an MB.

I think apple's decision to ban flash on the ipad/iphone is a good
one. It is a pig. Flash was bad when it came out, and has never
gotten any better. I generally don't allow flash to load, and
quickly leave websites that require flash, unless there is something
non-flash that is interesting.

Interesting you say that. About every week the Flash updater wants
to update Flash, which of course means going through some various
hoops to get the files, approve the update, typing in codes, then
shutting down the browser and restarting it, and various other
annoying activities. Not sure how to kill Flash as it seems many
sites require Flash to do various things.

Just yesterday T-Mobile sent me an mail saying my bill was ready. I had

Normally on a Mac you can save as a PDF, or when you click Print, you can
Print to PDF. However, this version of Acrobat expressly prohibits it. I
complained to T-Mobile and am waiting their response.

seems to be a feature of the latest version of actobat. Must have
been required for a goobermint contract, as all the goobermint

If the acrappy (adby?) reader shows you a little print icon, you
can print, but not save that way. It seems that the print icon can
be turned on or off by the creator. if they forget to add it, you
get a form you can;t print, and can't save. totally worthless.

Only easy and dependable way I know is used engine oil laboratory analysis.
Larry Turner on this list provides the service; which ever lab you use, ensure
they can test/report soot level. Sample engine now to establish a baseline,
then make changes and observe results. If they were my cars, the engine and

Highway miles at steady speed are the easiest miles for any car. City driving

You might also find they run even better. I am truly amazed by the
improvement in my 115 300D.
It was pretty sluggish when I got it compared to now. I have only driven
it about 10 to 12K miles in the time I have had it but much of that has
been fairly hard. I assume the previous owners had not really driven it
hard and it must have been carboned up as now it is a tryly different
car. I can recall feeling like I was abusing it when I was trying to
maintain 60 mph on the highway. On this past Monday I was driving it 75
mph and it seemed to want to go faster.

Re: [MBZ] 1989 W124 200D DIESEL 5 SPEED! -

2012-05-24 Thread Randy Bennell

I have not looked into it but I remember reading somewhere that one must
be quite careful when one decides to import a car from the US into
Canada. There are some that were never sold here and as such are
apparently not permitted. I think the article said MB was about the
worst for odd or unusual versions and if one decided to buy an MB in the
USA, one would be prudent to ensure it was importable.

I don't think there is any issue with most newer domestic vehicles but
some imports may be an issue.
I talked with a fellow one time at a car show who had brought in a
hotrod - don't recall exactly what but a 1930's thing that had a newer
V8 etc and disc brakes. He had a devil of a time getting a safety
certificate to have it licenced because it did not have original brakes.
He argued that what it had was obviously much better than the original
mechanical drum brakes but that apparently made no difference. He had to
find out what the brakes were from and provide evidence that the hot rod
did not weigh more etc. They also made him buy new discs because he was
unable to satisfy them that the discs were of sufficient thickness. Odd,
but true.

Bosch$9
Hengst$10

Has anyone had bad experiences with any of the above? Good experiences?

Should I assume they are equal? Assume the most expensive is the best

BTW, 'renewed my drivers license day before yesterday. I'd put my
driving ability up against any the examiner has ridden with for a LONG
time. 'Betcha she thought that, too, by the end of the road test. 'Bet
I did the quickest, smoothest 3-point turn she's seen. After having been
driving for 64 years and not ever thinking about what it's called, I may
have hesitated a bit when she asked me to do a 3-point turn, but I taught
my # 1 grandson to do it for his driving test about 4 years ago, and with
no hesitation at all, slipped right into it. In just a few seconds, it
was done. Before the road test, she couldn't seem to understand that I
need the walker to be able to stand and walk safely , but have no problem
whatsoever sitting and driving. 'Started to ask her during the backing
test if she'd like to hook a trailer behind the car and let me show her
how to back it using the mirrors; I didn't ask, though, for fear of
sounding like a smart ass. (Yes, I really am a smart ass - 'just didn't
wanta SOUND like one.) I was really too nervous and up tight during
the test - not for any lack of confidence in my ability to drive - just
the thought of having to prove to a bureaucrat that my using a walker has
no bearing whatsoever on my ability to drive - or hear, see, think, look
to the rear when backing, etc.

BTW, again, I have a very keen sense of situational awareness; I'm very
aware of what's going on around me - what other vehicles are nearby,
etc., and I carry what I call a running fix - I know where I am at all
times. I know they can perform magic in the movies, etc., but when a cop
or stalker pulls right out behind the subject and is not noticed seems
especially ridiculous to me. If somebody pulls in behind ME, I notice it
immediately.
If I pull out of my driveway, and another car from nearby pulls right in
behind me, I know it immediately.

the following:
Bosch$9
Hengst$10
Full$ 7
Mann$13

Has anyone had bad experiences with any of the above? Good experiences?
I tried to find specs (like filter size) but did not find any.

Should I assume they are equal? Assume the most expensive is the best
filter?

Comments?

And yes, you can poke out the seal between the bypass filter and the
full-flow filter in the cartridge, which will result in low oil

Has anyone had bad experiences with any of the above? Good experiences?
I tried to find specs (like filter size) but did not find any.

Should I assume they are equal? Assume the most expensive is the best

 Comments?
