We are definitely in a drought. Between the very limited snowfall last winter
and the lack of rain this spring and summer, food prices will be through the
roof by next year. Buy a freezer and stock up now...

Buy some extra filters and do the shock treatment of biobor. I

in my experience, the shock treatment, and running it will clean out

each refill for several tanks.

I had the same problem with my 82 300sd about 6 years ago. It would start

the tank got low, I painfully drained what would come out and removed the

out the tank with my pressure washer working from above through the fuel
gauge hole. After I was convinced the tank was as clean as it was going to

shop van on "blow" for about 8 hours; the shop-vac hose blew in at the fuel
gauge hole and air exited the strainer hole below. When all looked dry, I
put it back together with a new strainer. All this was done with the car on
jack stands and tilted to get the strainer hole as low as possible.

Then I pressure-washed my concrete work pad that was covered with an amazing

My '78 240D has gotten slow, really slow, mega slow, slow even for a 240D.

A couple weeks ago I replaced the fuel filters and it got better for most of
a ride to RI. On the way back it was bad again. How bad? Like 3rd gear 50mph
on any kind of hill bad.

So today I figured I better look into it. Pulled the fuel sender, the tank
is pretty low so this seemed like a good place to start. YEECH! What is that
black $h!t coating the bottom 1/4 of the sender? This can't be good.
Got it apart and found a huge snot globule that explains why the low fuel
light never comes on.

When I say huge snot globule I mean it. At first I thought there was a wiper
pad at the bottom of the sender. Had to come in an look at pictures of a
clean one. I got the globule out and got the sender back together, at least
one thing is fixed.

I don't know if I want to attempt the tank strainer. Looks like if I do I
should probably buy the kit from Mercedes source but it also seems like if
the tank is as bad as this I should probably have it pulled out and steam
cleaned. I'll run it over to my local guy tomorrow and see what he'll charge
for this fun job. If the guy down the street will do it it'll save my Indy.
I think this is a job he'd prefer not to do.

I agree with most of this. We had one for about 5 years. Never a
problem with it. I will say that I think that using flat pans is really
important. A crowned pan bottom is basically contacting a small portion
of the "burner" surface area.

All that said, I don't hate them, but I would probably never buy another
one. I much prefer gas.

No shortage of sunlight this summer. I think we're now tied for
all-time consecutive days without rain, going back to the 19th century
or whenever accurate records were first kept.

Winters can be dreary, but Indiana has four distinct seasons, none of
which really dominate, so that offers nice variety. If you hate the
coldest part of winter, or the hottest part of summer, it's only about
three months.

To each his own I guess.

Which? Glass or ceramic?

I have a GE black glass cooktop with center downdraft exhaust. Similar to
Jenn-Air but less expensive and superior in design. Fast heating and has
warning lights for each element when warm. Requires polish to reduce surface
scratches and cooked on spills are removed by razor blade. Far easier to keep
clean that a conventional cooktop with exposed burners. Looks good, too. Not
exactly cheap.

Yes, the burners are slow to heat, and slow to cool, but work just fine
once you get used to it. No instant gratification, but a solid performer.
Bottom line - different strokes for different folks.

slow heating/slow cooling of an electric to a good gas range. That said there

We have had them on a number of cooktops and stoves over the years, and have
been very pleased with them.

The best part is that you don't had to worry about exposed burners and cleaning
underneath them.

They do require a different means of cleaning (scraping if you get really messy
and using the special cleaner) but other than that they are pretty much hassle
free.

I have never broken one, but I suspect you could if you hit it hard enough. I
have dropped pots and pans on them accidentally and not done any damage.

You have to have cookware that is flat bottomed, that is, it needs to be good
and flat - you'll know if you have a skillet or pan that is crowned. It will
still work, but it's not as efficient. We have always used hard anodized
professional cookware, the bulk of which is Magnalite, but you can use just
about any kind of cookware you like.

People used to complain that you couldn't control the heat as well (as a gas
stove) with these cooktops, but that's simply not true. We currently have a
Maytag range with a ceramic cooktop, and I can simmer as low as you want, not
to mention that it even has a warming area in the center, too.

Given the choice, I would stick with ceramic cooktops.

[MBZ] Rim sizes

2012-07-16 Thread Fmiser
I discovered I have two different sizes - or at least offsets -
of bundt rims among my W123s.

I have shuffled the wheels around enough I have no idea which
rims arrived with which car.

Anyway, I was using my laser level to tweak the front wheel
toe-in adjustment and was appalled at how far off it was! I
then noticed that my level, resting on the rim, was running
into the center cap on the one wheel, but not on the other.

See the PDF called "w123-toein-alignment_howto" at
http://www.host-a.net/u/fmiser for details.

Digging deeper, I found the distance from the mount flange to
the center cap is the same - but the distance from the flange
to the tire bead seat is not. The difference is about 0.25
inches, or 7 mm.

I haven't tried to do an accurate measurement of the rim width
yet so I don't know if it's offset or width that's different.
Or both.

But my toe-in error was from a "tall" rim on the front, and an
"short" one on the back. Since I was using the laser to align
from the front rim to the back rim I was getting a 1/2 inch
shift in addition to the mis-alignment. Now I know to watch for
it.

It does not. Extremely reliable.

But, like the Navistar diesel engine that Ford used,
which wasn't quite the same design as what Navistar
intended, perhaps it has been messed with?

(Ford dicked with it, and lemonized it. The 'same' engine, in
Navistar trim, was just fine.)

People used to complain that you couldn't control the heat as well

We _hated_ ours, and couldn't wait to replace it. The thermal

which was its replacement. But it was an early one.

I now dry parts in its oven, out in the garage.

Had one for two years in the 80s. Agree with all Dan said. Also, you
couldn't tell by looking if a burner was hot, or not, if that matters to
you. Invisible traces of food, etc., will turn brown when hot and we found
the special cleaning stuff was required to restore the new appearance.

We have had them on a number of cooktops and stoves over the years, and have
been very pleased with them.

The best part is that you don't had to worry about exposed burners and
cleaning underneath them.

They do require a different means of cleaning (scraping if you get really
messy and using the special cleaner) but other than that they are pretty
much hassle free.

I have never broken one, but I suspect you could if you hit it hard enough.
I have dropped pots and pans on them accidentally and not done any damage.

You have to have cookware that is flat bottomed, that is, it needs to be
good and flat - you'll know if you have a skillet or pan that is crowned.
It will still work, but it's not as efficient. We have always used hard
anodized professional cookware, the bulk of which is Magnalite, but you can
use just about any kind of cookware you like.

People used to complain that you couldn't control the heat as well (as a gas
stove) with these cooktops, but that's simply not true. We currently have a
Maytag range with a ceramic cooktop, and I can simmer as low as you want,
not to mention that it even has a warming area in the center, too.

Given the choice, I would stick with ceramic cooktops.

My folks had one. It lasted a lot of years - till someone

It's a very flat surface, and so most pans are going to have
only a couple points actually in contact.

Cleaning is relatively easy because it is all one, big flat
surface. A little scouring powder and it's all shine clean
again.

I don't think it's repairable. Likely replaceable - if you can

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh - algae woes

2012-07-16 Thread Scott Ritchey
I had the same problem with my 82 300sd about 6 years ago. It would start
out OK but after a few miles crap would build up on the in-tank fuel
strainer to the extent I couldn't maintain speed, especially uphill. When
the tank got low, I painfully drained what would come out and removed the
in-tank strainer. A vice-grips did the job of unscrewing it. Then I blasted
out the tank with my pressure washer working from above through the fuel
gauge hole. After I was convinced the tank was as clean as it was going to
get, I sucked up the water I could reach with a shop vac and than ran the
shop van on "blow" for about 8 hours; the shop-vac hose blew in at the fuel
gauge hole and air exited the strainer hole below. When all looked dry, I
put it back together with a new strainer. All this was done with the car on
jack stands and tilted to get the strainer hole as low as possible.

Then I pressure-washed my concrete work pad that was covered with an amazing
layer of crud.

Bergsma's kit looks like good stuff. I did the job without the fancy tools
but I was younger then.

Supplemental: my problem was debris from refueling at a bad station. I
normally add Biobor (biocide) at each refueling. I get the stuff at West
Marine.

I ask because Cummins used to do this in India, and while the product looked

Obviously things one would need to check after fording the stream.
We have had vehicles flood while parked on the street in front of our
home when it has rained very hard.
The first was my wife's Taurus and the last was her Avalon. We learned
to move the cars when heavy rain is predicted and the river is high.
The storm sewers do not drain well when the river is high. They close
the gravity drains and use pumps and the pumps cannot keep up and
sometimes the power goes off etc.
The insurance company spent about $3500 to put new carpet in the Avalon.
The carpet got wet but not the seats etc. or they likely would have
written it off.

The Taurus dried out ok. Did not have a mouldy smell later.
None of these appeared to ingest any water into engines or other
driveline parts.
My neighbor lost a Toyota Corolla that same night. IT got wet inside and
when he started it up, it shorted out the electrical system. The engine
computer is located low on the passeenger side nad it got wet. Was a
relatively new car and they wrote it off.

The old LTD that my son was driving did. It flooded the same night as
the Avalon. The interior got wet and it smelled a bit for a while but it
was not worth doing much about. Tom just drove it and over time it dried
out and the smell went away.
However, shortly after the car got wet, it blew a pink milkshake out of
the transmission. He called me to the local McDonald's parking lot and
we drove it accross the street to a tranny shop and had them replace the
transmission fluid and the diff oil.
Did not cause any problems after. Just cost a bit to have it done right
away.
Another neighbor had a Honda Civic flood that night. They were away in
Belgium and the car sat there full of water for the better part of a
month before they returned. The water was up over the seat bases to
start with and leaked down to the point where only the foot wells were
full of water but there would not have been much salvagable apart from
sheet metal on that one I would think.

We live on a dead end street with a circle at the end. It is truly
amazing how much of a slope there is on the street. Looking at it when
it is dry, one would think is is basically level but when the rains
come, it is obvious that it is not. The circle is high and dry and by
the time one gets to the corner about 150 to 180 feet south, the water
can be 2 to 3 feet deep.

A client who bought a condo in AZ this past winter says they also have

Are you sure it is a "true" Bosch pump, or is it being produced by the tractor
mfg. under license?

I ask because Cummins used to do this in India, and while the product looked
identical, there was a noticeable difference in quality and durability.

We have people from Ohio who apparently could not find their way to
Florida and stopped here, along with their bad habits. It is insane in

[MBZ] Bosch IP Durability

2012-07-16 Thread Scott Ritchey
Ladies and Gents:

I'm looking for your experiences and opinions WRT Bosch Diesel injection
pumps. My recollection is that they were near bullet-proof but maybe my
memory deceives me.

Among other things, I own a Kioti (Daedong of Korea) tractor and subscribe
to tractor list (tractorbynet.com) with a Kioti section. The Kioti IP is
made by Bosch and it is similar to our Mercedes Diesel pumps except the IP
camshaft is inside the engine block and gear driven, like a mini valve
camshaft. The Kioti IP bolts in place over this camshaft so it is much like
the top half of our pumps. Another difference is the Kioti fuel shutoff,
which uses an electrical solenoid vs vacuum like MBZ.

Now, lately, several Kioti owners have reported IP failures. Here's a post
showing damage to the gear and rack teeth after one of these failures:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kioti-owning-operating/225273-injector-pu
mp-failure.html.

A new IP costs over $1K and rebuilds aren't available to this is a high
interest item for many Kioti owners.

These failures seem to occur with pretty low hours on the motor, like less
than 1000 hours on tractors ma.

So here's what I'd like to know:

1. Were our old Bosch IPs really as robust as I recall (I can't recall any
reports of similar failures).

2. What's going on here? Has the quality of Bosch products really gone
south? Is this just a bad batch of parts?

Thanks

Scott

Yeah, there's that too. When I was at Purdue, one winter we went 26

Sorry 'bout ruinin' yer story:) I can be a troublemaker sometimes. BTW are you
sure your 240D wasn't an Amphicar;)
Speaking of Amphicars, the owner of the used car dealer on Western Ave in
Watertown, MA where I bought my 220D 15 yrs ago claimed to have 20 of those
amphibious vehicles. They were pretty cheap back then. If he still owns them
he's pretty car rich at 40K a pop today!

Re: [MBZ] OT - A/V Receiver

2012-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff
Bought the Yamaha receiver at HH Gregg. Still in the box in my garage.

Will see if I have time to set it up to tonight.

I sold one of my rarely used vintage receivers to justify the purchase - a
Sanyo Plus 75, which is a beast of a receiver but still quite viable for
someone wanting to drive a set of speakers to clipping...

2012-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff
Exactly.

That is the one thing that literally made me crazy when I moved back up there
in 2008 from Florida. I had absolutely no idea how much the lack of sunlight
would affect me.

Hard to imagine it didn't affect me growing up, but as you say, if you don't
know any different

We had nearly a week of little to no sunlight recently when TS Debby went
through. It was noticeable after a few days, sort of like, "Hey, what's going
on?"

I love Wisconsin where we used to live, and I miss the huge house we had in
Indy, but there is no way I could ever return to either place on a long term
basis.

Re: [MBZ] I'm interviewing at Taylor

2012-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff
Rich,

Based on my experiences in the area through the late 80s and from 2008-2010,
not a lot has changed in the area. If anything, it's gotten worse, mainly due
to the collapse of heavy industry in the area.

GM has a huge plant on the south side of town, but other than that heavy
industry that once dominated the area has pretty much disappeared.

Marion and Gas City, both nearby towns that lived off of heavy industry, are
really hurting.

Generally speaking its a nice area with a good cost of living. If you make a
decent salary you can live well.

I know that Taylor is a very vibrant educational community, based on both what
my niece has told me as well as what folks in secondary education in the state
said.

Despite the small size, Taylor has a very good reputation as a private school,
and I was surprised at the number of kids in my son's graduating class of 2010
who were going there (this was while we were living in Indianapolis.)

While I would expect the environment to be very different than Los Alamos, it
would seem that there are a lot of real positives about the place (not to
mention the idea of being gainfully employed!)

Living in Indiana, I found the northern portions to be depressing for a lot of
reasons, mainly that it was rural and flat. Get up in your neighborhood and you
can add the wonderful cities of Gary and East Chicago to that, too.

That being said, the Midwest has a lot of positive aspects as well, such as
cost of living and a well grounded value system.

I have become somewhat jaded, as I have found I can't live without regular
exposure to the sun, which is not an attribute of the northern climes.

I grew up, er, spent my first 18yr, in the Fort. Decent enough place at
that time I guess, but sadly lacking in anything particularly exciting.
Perhaps in the intervening 40 () years it has improved, though I
have heard it has not, and in fact might have become worse off due to
changing demographics of the population, etc. I guess anyplace is what
you make it, but I would not expect a lot of stimulation. The
surrounding countryside is pleasant enough if you go for flat farms. A
bit north of FWA is a lake area with lots of small (and a few a bit
larger) lakes, cottages, and such. There are some river impoundments
around too. Fishing and boating fun. Indianapolis is not too far away,
I am sure there might be a bit more of something desirable there.
Chicago too should you want to risk that.

Cultural diversity seemed to be that we had some Jews who lived here and
there (and some were my friends in HS), but it was mostly your basic
white bread lifestyle, though there was a sizable black population back
then (not much mixing at that time), and hispanics were starting to come
(and I had a friend whose parents started a Mexican restaurant about the
time I left, never got a chance to try it out-- that would have been
quite daring!). There were some heavy industries (Intl Harvester, GM
built a truck plant but I think it might have closed, electronics) but
the economy might have pounded those. A lot of Germans settled in the
area back when, still a lot of that influence. Amish are (were) strong
north of FWA, they might have spread to other areas as they expand their
families/farming activities.

I am planning to go back for my 40th HS reunion in September, will be
interesting to see what changes hath wrought. I have not been back in
like 25yr, my parents left about then to move back to their home domain
in KY so never had much reason to go.

All that said, good luck with your interview, I am sure you will do well
and might have the opportunity to try something new. And being around
kids and teaching will provide a lot of satisfaction, which will make up
for any other shortcomings.

Wonderful people, but it can be a little stifling due to the limited life
experiences that can lead to a very narrow world view.

Ft. Wayne is close (1hour), and has a fairly active cultural community. You can
expect to find just about anything you would like there. Muncie (Ball State) is
close by as well, and has a thriving cultural community.

I doubt there will be much in the way of cultural diversity outside of Taylor.
As to the comment about minorities, no, the bulk of the locals are Anglos to
the best of my knowledge.

All of this being said, working in a higher educational environment (I have
found) can be quite stimulating. While the locals may not be terribly dynamic,
the faculty will most likely be an interesting bunch of people.

While this hasn't come into the conversation yet, Taylor is an evangelical
school, so the religious aspect plays a very large part in the day to day
operation of the campus. I certainly don't think they are zealots by any means,
at least not based on what I have seen and heard from my niece who graduated
from Taylor a few years ago, but I do know that the religious aspect of the
school is a significant part of things.

Guess that means you shouldn't swear like a longshoreman during your interview?

Again, good luck! I hope you are successful in your search.

Yes, after a water pump replacement, it's running well. The fan bearing
is making noise when it's cold, so I will have to replace that, too.

Of all the cars I have owned and sold (approx. 30 cars), there are only two

that was owned by a customer of mine when I worked at the dealership. He was a
fanatic about maintenance and cosmetic condition. It was also just a great car.

The other car I wished I had back was the car you now have - 1990 300D 2.5.
That was also a beautiful car and the 300D 2.5 is such a phenomenal MB diesel.
I'm sure the newer diesels are great, but I loved that old car. I shouldn't
really regret selling it. I drove it for 2.5 years and put 80,000 miles on it
and sold it to OK Don for a good price. I just really liked that car. If it
had been just a little bigger especially in terms of back seat room for
passengers, I would have kept it.

I do really LOVE my 740iL. It is big roomy, all the extra luxury features work
and it still catches your eye. I did hit a bird on the highway last week and
it knocked out one of the kidney shaped grills in the front. So, I am going to
have find one of those.

Im glad two of my former cars are out their making their new owners happy. I

Yeah, you might as well be on another planet considering where you live
relative to Upland, IN.

I wouldn't consider Ft. Wayne a cultural center, either, but it's better than
nothing. For that matter, Muncie isn't that far, so there are options...

Re: [MBZ] I'm interviewing at Taylor

2012-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff
Culturally you will probably find it to be lacking in a lot of respects. I
don't know that specific area in great detail, but much of what has been said
previously will be true - primarily an agrarian society with strong moral
values and limited education.
