Here on the coast of the Lowcountry we got some much needed rain yesterday with a bit of breeze but not much. Tide was VERY high yesterday morning and this morning, a bit of surge due to the storm, and full moon time too. The dolphins were enjoying it in Capt Sams Inlet this morning so did not disturb them. I did not go over to the beach but someone said there was some good surf going. The cold front is on its way, quite breezy today and will be getting chilly the next few days and nights. My son is in DC, and my niece and family -- my boy said he was going to fill the bathtub (you do this when a storm is coming!) and my niece stocked up on wine and cheese as the grocery was out of TP and other less-important staples. Track looks like it headed north a bit now from what it was yesterday. On my cycling adventure this morning I met a guy who said he was from Connecticut, must live on the shore or something as he said storms like that flood his house. So I ran several years with the push button. When it didn't start with the key, I'd hit the pushbutton and it took right up. I eventually figured out it was the switch, and replaced it, and never needed the pushbutton after that. The ign switch does wear out sometimes, especially in 25+ year old Diesels with lots of start cycles. I suppose I should have told everyone is a 4 speed. I stopped on the way home to pick up my new glasses and when I came back out it started up just fine. So I have no idea. I reckon that it was a problem with the ignition electric in the dash, it would not have started. [MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?
Our '03 Focus is making some noise from the front end. More pronounced on turns, especially to the right. I suspected wheel bearings, and there is some side to side slop in the driver's side wheel, but none top to bottom. When I look at the movement, the whole knuckle is moving, if it was the bearing then I should not see that right? So maybe it's the tie rod? But would that make noise while driving? The noise is sometimes more like a growling and sometimes more like a rattle. Re: [MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?
Just like Mercedes rear axles, front wheel drive CV joints usually don't go bad until the boot fails, which is easy to see. If you can produce knocking noise in a tight turn (at wheel lock, try forward and reverse gears), that is a sure sign of a bad axle. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '95 E300 '87 300TD Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu wrote: Our '03 Focus is making some noise from the front end. Re: [MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?
A bad axle will not show looseness, that has to be either a wheel bearing (brake disk will move in and out with the hub, strut mount will NOT move) or a bad ball joint. I'd vote for a wheel bearing. If they are the standard front wheel drive type, they are double race ball bearing permanently sealed bearing pressed into the steering knuckle with the shaft keyed into them and bolted in place. They can growl, but often knock like a bad ball joint on bumps. I've had both failures over the years. Some are bolted on instead of pressed in (much easier to replace). If the ball joints are bad, you can get the steering knuckle moving back and forth with the weight off the tire, but only if it's really bad. Do the normal checks -- straight in and out play at the bearing is the bearing, in and out play on an unloaded (jackstand under the control arm) is probably ball joint or maybe loose strut mount bolts. Play when rocking top to bottom is ball joint or strut mount (upper), side to side is a tie rod or drag link, vertical play when prying up on the bottom of the tire is a bad ball joint. A bad CV joint can groan, but the diagnostic is a low speed very sharp turn. A distinct click click click at wheel speed is a worn out joint. They normally don't fail unless the boots are bad, but it does happen at high milage. They can also moan and rumble when they get really worn, too. Re: [MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?
Tie rod failure is easy to see. If you see the tie rod end hop up and down when you push and pull and 3 and 9 then its bad. But since it does not rotate at speed, it is unlikely the noise you are experiencing. But it could still be bad. It is possible that the CV joint is bad and the tie rod is loose.
