That's another thought. My hope is that 1) I'm not that high mileage,
150K or so and 2) there was a maintenance sticker on the car when I
bought it and I talked to the mechanic so I have reason to hope it was
well maintained. But, you mentioned getting an analysis done and that is
cheaper than changing the fluid on general principle.

When I first got my '85 190D oil analysis showed high iron levels in the
engine oil. After a few changes with Mobil 1 the iron levels went down to
normal and stayed there even with 10,000+ mile oil changes. The previous
owner swore to me he changed the oil every 5,000 miles but I don't recall
any mention of what oil he'd used.

I always assume the previous owner was and idiot (well except for the car I

Might have been a bit high on the hwy due to oversized tires effectively making
the gearing taller (I think the car was optimized for 55-60mph on the hwy in

My son is in DC, and my niece and family -- my boy said he was going to
fill the bathtub (you do this when a storm is coming!) and my niece
stocked up on wine and cheese as the grocery was out of TP and other
less-important staples. Track looks like it headed north a bit now from
what it was yesterday. On my cycling adventure this morning I met a guy
who said he was from Connecticut, must live on the shore or something as
he said storms like that flood his house. Not sure why he is here, but
he seemed both worried and glad not to be there.

BTDT - my kids loved the doorbell push button starting so much that they
begged me NOT to fix the ignition switch! We ended up with them in a 240D,

On Fri, Oct 26, 2012 at 11:13 PM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote:

My 240D went through a few years of intermittent no-juicy-no-starty. I ran
a hot wire from the fuse block into the dash, put a intermittent pushbutton
switch on the lower-left dash near the door. The other side of the switch
was run directly to the small terminal in the starter.

At the time, no one had heard of the ign switch electrics ever wearing
out. So I ran several years with the push button. When it didn't start
with the key, I'd hit the pushbutton and it took right up. I eventually
figured out it was the switch, and replaced it, and never needed the
 pushbutton after that.

The ign switch does wear out sometimes, especially in 25+ year old Diesels
 with lots of start cycles.

I suppose I should have told everyone is a 4 speed. I stopped on the way
home to pick up my new glasses and when I came back out it started up just
fine. So I have no idea. I reckon that it was a problem with the ignition
electric in the dash, it would not have started. I'm going to go out in a
couple of minutes and test the small wire to the solenoid for voltage when
 the key is on.

[MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?

2012-10-28 Thread Allan Streib
Our '03 Focus is making some noise from the front end. More pronounced
on turns, especially to the right.

I suspected wheel bearings, and there is some side to side slop in the
driver's side wheel, but none top to bottom. When I look at the
movement, the whole knuckle is moving, if it was the bearing then I
should not see that right? So maybe it's the tie rod? But would that
make noise while driving?

The noise is sometimes more like a growling and sometimes more like a
rattle.

Just like Mercedes rear axles, front wheel drive CV joints usually don't go bad
until the boot fails, which is easy to see.

If you can produce knocking noise in a tight turn (at wheel lock, try forward
and reverse gears), that is a sure sign of a bad axle.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?

2012-10-28 Thread Peter Frederick
A bad axle will not show looseness, that has to be either a wheel
bearing (brake disk will move in and out with the hub, strut mount
will NOT move) or a bad ball joint.

I'd vote for a wheel bearing. If they are the standard front wheel
drive type, they are double race ball bearing permanently sealed
bearing pressed into the steering knuckle with the shaft keyed into
them and bolted in place. They can growl, but often knock like a bad
ball joint on bumps. I've had both failures over the years. Some are
bolted on instead of pressed in (much easier to replace).

If the ball joints are bad, you can get the steering knuckle moving
back and forth with the weight off the tire, but only if it's really
bad.

Do the normal checks -- straight in and out play at the bearing is the
bearing, in and out play on an unloaded (jackstand under the control
arm) is probably ball joint or maybe loose strut mount bolts. Play
when rocking top to bottom is ball joint or strut mount (upper), side
to side is a tie rod or drag link, vertical play when prying up on the
bottom of the tire is a bad ball joint.

A bad CV joint can groan, but the diagnostic is a low speed very sharp
turn. A distinct click click click at wheel speed is a worn out
joint. They normally don't fail unless the boots are bad, but it does
happen at high milage. They can also moan and rumble when they get
really worn, too.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 03 Ford Focus wheel bearing or tie rod?

2012-10-28 Thread Brian Toscano
Tie rod failure is easy to see. If you see the tie rod end hop up and down
when you push and pull and 3 and 9 then its bad. But since it does not
rotate at speed, it is unlikely the noise you are experiencing. But it
could still be bad. It is possible that the CV joint is bad and the tie
rod is loose.

I love my 83 300d! Just got back from a trip to Rochester and back. 160
gps miles, 5.35 gallons of fuel comes to 29.9mpg driving like I stole it.
It has NA gears in the rear so it comes off the line pretty well but
really

turns some rpm's(tach doesn't work) at 75 and 80mph but runs along smooth
as can be at that speed.
Gotta do a valve adjustment and general checkover to get ready for an
1800 mile trip to Parris Island to pick up my son after boot camp. So, 60
gallons or so of veggie oil should get me there and back. That's about $5
worth of filtering and 1 hour of my time to process the fuel. And, I get
to drive one of the finest cars ever madegotta love it!

What is the total revenue collected in 1970? What is the total
revenue collected last year?

Don't forget that those fuel taxes pay for the highways and bridges,
but only to build them. Should be much higher in order to maintain
those roads and highways in decent shape, the Federal taxes are the
same as they were in the 70's and things are MUCH more expensive now!

The FAA inspector conducted an examination of the airplane and
reported that the aircraft was constructed primarily of plywood and
fabric. The seat belts were out of a Chevy van and were held together
with wooden screws. The shoulder harnesses were backpack straps. There
was a coffee can welded to the exhaust with holes poked in it.

...Why was the schlumpf museum seized?..

The Schlumpf brothers hadn't been paying their taxes or employee wages and
the French government stepped in and took over. I toured the place in 1984
after I picked up my new 944.

...So what you are saying is that if you start driving this car, you
 would change the oil?..

When I drive the car, it is never less than fifty miles and it isn't driven
at all during the cold months. Your theory was that even with not driving
it, the oil should be dumped annually and then I referred to all the Museum
cars that likely never get an oil change based on time.

This car is not a diesel with a crankcase full of soot and there is a
difference.

It is a garage filler, too fragile to drive by your description.
Send it to the crusher and free up the porch space.
