[MBZ] Lenovo T-61
Grandson gave me a Lenovo T-61 he used through 4 years of college. No p/w is available so he said I'll have to wipe the hd and load my own os on it. My copy of WinXP started loading from a CD but stopped because it could not find any hd's? I would guess this is a security feature installed by the university? Can someone suggest a way to wipe the hd so I can install my copy of winxp? When I access the boot menu it provides a choice of the following: 1. atapi cdo: matshitadvd ram uj-86 4. ata hddo: fujitsu mh22160bh g1 5. pci lan: iba ge slot 00c8 v124 (enter setup) After entering BIOS setup utility I get a choice of the following: config security startup restart HDD diagnostic program and then a list of hardware data. I went to startup and changed the order with the cd starting first. That allowed my winxp disc to boot until it stopped because it could not find the hd. The hdd diagnostic program takes one minute per gig. Since the installed os boots up every time without problems, I didn't run it. Can this job be done totally solo? I have not met any of my neighbors or friends/wifes/kids or enemies who gives a rats a-- for my 77 300D or would be worthy or interested in helping. Tom, I have done 3 chains solo, and never dropped a link. The most recent was the easiest, due to a tip from one of the listers. I tied the end of a long bungee cord overhead and used that to take up the old chain. You tie it offset from center of the car, and not too high, so that the new chain always is pulled over the cam gear. My basket ball pole was handy and I used that. This frees up you to turn the crank and watch the new chain feed in. Figure on moving the bungee hook in the chain about 4 times so you don't have to stretch it too tight. Two caveats. You MUST relieve cranking pressure by pulling the glow plugs (my choice) or the injectors. The new chain goes in so much easier, and there is no chance of an accidental power stroke. Before you break the chain, you should always tie the chain ends to the cam gear so that if anything goes wrong you still have your timing. Also make sure that the service link picks up all the link plates on both chains or one will fold back and the result will block the chain from clearing the crank gear as clearance is very tight there. Once you have the new chain attached to the old chain, and tension on the old chain with the bungee, you can cut the ties. Same deal when you are done and ready to splice the chain--tie those ends down! Do not trust your grip in this oily environment! On many models you must remove the chain tensioner, because they have a stepping mechanism in them that takes up the slack as the chain wears. You cannot push this kind back. I like this kind the best because they do not rattle when the engine is first started. Many install a new tensioner with any new chain job. It is certain that you will see heavy spring wear on your old one, should you take the piston out to reload it Good luck, you can do this! The ones from the top manufacturers (Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, maybe LG,Samsung,Toshiba) with DC compressor motors are. The key phrase is 'inverter drive'. Often with oversize compressors, they loaf along during A/C and mild weather heating, then go to full power (and sometimes beyond) when it gets really cold outside. My Fuji is AHRI rated to put out 12,000 BTU/hr at 47° ambient but it's capable of running from 1700 to 15,000 BTU/hr at that temp. Rated output drops to 8100 at 17° and 6600 at 5°, I assume max is around 1/4 higher. If you're used to old fashioned heat pumps, the fact that it's usable below 17° is a minor miracle. My house draws about 30,000 BTU/hr when it's 0°F outside, I hope to get that down around 24,000, so a single 3/4 ton mini split is just a supplement to the furnace like having a fireplace in the living room. The Hyper Heat Mitsus and the RLS series Fujis are really impressive in heat mode when they overdrive the compressor at low ambient temps. I think the MSZ-FE Mitsus are a real bargain for heat, unfortunately only available in 3/4 ton and 1 ton sizes. The comparable Fuji costs 20% more, and the top of the line Daikin 50% more. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

When torquing the OM 60x stretch headbolts, after pretorquing, you are to turn them 90º, wait 10 min, then turn another 90º for the final stretch, and torque. When turning the final 90º it feels like the bolts yield, as designed, for part of the final 90º. Here is my question: I use triple square bit with a 13mm hex. Then a 13mm socket on a 12 extension, topped by a breaker bar. On the first torque, there is maybe 10º flex between the final position with the handle torqued and the untorqued position of the handle at rest. Do you measure the 90º at the handle, resulting in the bolt being turned maybe 80-85º, or do you turn the handle past 90 so that the head of the bolt turns 90º? I turned the handle past and sort of split the difference between the loaded and unloaded handle position. Since I could feel the bolts yield and stretch on the last turn, I figger this is close enough. I am a bit surprised waycee jitney doesn't sell a degree wheel of some sort for this. I am even more surprised that Daimler/MB does not insist on using a special tool to get precisely 90º on the turn. I guess the 90º is meant for the bolt head, but I was wondering how others have handled this vagary in the past. As specific as some instructions are in the book, it seems a bit odd that the head bolt torquing procedure is not very specific. I guess in der faterland, they expect every apprentice is taught this first. It would seem that the bolt heads should at least have a pointer stamped in them. The first time I encountered stretch headbolts was on Deutz engines in the late 70s. I think maybe KHD was ahead of Daimler Benz/MB on adopting the stretch bolts. But for the Deutz, we were playing around with new engines. Not exactly real world. I don't remember exactly when MB made the switchover to stretch bolts for the OM engines. I think it was somewhere around 1979 or 1980. Certainly there were not many replaced until the OM60x series of engines came out, with the cracking 14 heads. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Rusty comes through again x 2
Yesterday afternoon, around 2-3 pm, I called Mr. Q, aka Rusty, because I misplaced the valve cover gasket for the OM603 I am working on. The gasket just arrived. That is something like 18-19 hours from the order. When the machine shop was ready for the valve guides, they arrived in 2 days vs. the week it normally takes to get shipments. BTW, the valve cover gasket with next day air was less than driving 5 miles to the local stealership here and paying their price. It was faster and cheaper to get it from Q. I am sure the stealer would have had to order it and I'd have to pay freight on top of their price that was already higher than price plus frt from Q. And, it would have taken longer for the stealership to get the gasket in. How old is the laptop? I suspect your copy of WinXP is older than the laptop which probably requires SP3. I had this same issue with a Dell M90 laptop. It might be worth contacting Lenovo and see if they'll send you the initial install media. Thats what I did with the Dell and it worked out great. Re: [MBZ] OK - anybody there?
That sounds like a lot of work... ;) I like Hecker's flour, its only available at my local IGA of all places. We do have some locally sourced flour thats also very good. I agree that flour makes or breaks the bread. That said I've made some good bread from just plain old all purpose flour too... I take: 3c flour 1 1/2 cup water 5/8 tsp yeast 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp maple syrup mix it all in a bowl until the flour is all incorporated, put plastic wrap over the bowl and leave over night. Next day I put the dutch oven in the oven at 450F, lay out a tea towel and flour it well, dump the dough onto the towel, flour it a bit, stretch it a bit, fold it over onto itself and wait 30 minutes. After the wait pull the dutch oven out of the oven, toss some wheat bran or oatmeal or cornmeal or whatever into the bottom so the bread won't stick. Stretch the dough one more time and fold it back up into a blob, drop the blob into the bottom of the pot, put on the lid and back in the oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes pull the lid off the pot and do another 10-15 minutes depending on how dark you like your crust. Easy peasy. I did 6 loaves on Christmas eve (well plus the night before) in two runs as I now have 3 dutch ovens. I even did this bread in the Coleman oven once: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eQWbF0oVkc -Curt Date: Thu, 27 Dec 2012 16:18:07 -0600 From: Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OK - anybody there? King Aurthur Bread Flour, SAF bulk yeast in the red package ($4.95 from King Aurthur) and you can hardly go wrong. Keading I do the easy way, a Kitchen Aid K5 circa 1965, makes wonderful bread out of just about any four, even barely suitable stuff. Best to mix the liquid, yeast, and part of the flour and let the yeast work for 15-20 min, then add the rest of the four, knead, rise, shape, rise again. Adds greatly to that wonderful yeast flavor. All purpose flour tends to the fragile and mushy side when making bread I've discovered, and adding some durum flour helps quite a bit, although hand kneading bread with durum wheat flour is not for the weak, you're going to be at it for a while! Nothing beats fresh bread -- if my brother and nephew happen to drop by while I'm baking on Saturday, as they often do, the first loaf never cools completely, being consumed instead. [MBZ] Skunky Front Loading Washer - OT
Just thought I would toss this out for any list member that might have a front loading washer they have odor problems with If you had an older front loading washer, you may, from time to time, experience issues with mold or a skunky smell in the drum. You can clean the mold from around the door seal where it usually occurs, but getting the odor out of the drum can be problematic. There are front load washer cleaning solutions, and you can also drain the pump sump regularly to avoid any nasty stuff accumulating in the sump. However, this still may not completely remove the skunky odor. I was having this problem with our 2007 GE front loader, and no matter how much effort I put into it, the odor would always return after a few loads. Some research yielded a solution: When manufacturers realized this was an issue, they started efforts to improve ventilation of the washer drums. They did this in a number of different ways, all of which seemed to alleviate the problem. That did little for those of us with older models, however. I found someone who created a retrofit for older front loading washers that was nothing more than a small pancake fan like you would have in a desktop computer enclosure used to ventilate the drum on a constant basis. While this is a nice solution, I was reluctant to pay the $60-$70 for such a thing, realizing the parts were probably something I had laying around the house - and I did! With a 1-1/4 rubber coupling, a 6 PVC drain tailpiece, a 12VDC CPU cooling fan and a 12VDC wall transformer, I made my own ventilation fan. Total cost: about $6, as I only had to buy the coupling and tailpiece. The rest of it I had in my junk box. The coupling allowed me to connect the tailpiece to the vent tube sticking out of the back of my washing machine. The CPU fan, centered on the end of the tailpiece flange, just had four self tapping sheet metal screws to hold it to the flange, and I soldered and sealed the wires from the wall transformer. Voila! I have only had it in place for a day, so there are no observable results yet, but I'm going to keep a close eye (and nose) on it to see how things develop. It's plenty quiet, but the $60-$70 kit that's sold uses a 5VDC fan and a USB wall charger such as you would have for an iPod is probably quieter. I have some 5VDC CPU fans as well, but I didn't have a 5VDC supply, so I figured I would start out with the larger fan and see if it was annoying. I don't think it's an issue of volume, more so an issue of just keeping some air moving through the drum so what water remains after a wash cycle evaporates and doesn't get nasty. You have to make sure the door remains slightly open when not in use as well, but that's a recommendation that is made by the manufacturer anyway. Even if you had to buy all of the parts to do this you could probably do it for under $25. And now to add a ceiling light fixture in the hallway in from of the pantry (so we can see in it, especially at night) Dan ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Which Retsel do you have? Their hand-crank ones look like some major exercise! I am wondering if it would be possible and practical to utilize the PTO on the KitchenAid to drive the manual one with the crank removed? Retsel's motorized option is a 1/2 horse motor; I doubt if the KA motor has that much oomph. Any of you engineer types have a thought on this? The Retsel with motor is a big investment and takes up major space! I love the KitchenAid for many things, but the grain mill attachment doesn't make a fine enough flour except for adding some whole wheat flour into store-bought flour to boost flavor and nutrition in breads, rolls and buns. [MBZ] Wooo boy!
Got a replacement alternator today from my local Car Quest. Got the old one back out (had put it back in so I could move the car for snow removal) and with them side by side Oh $h*t! they're not the same, the new one has a longer shaft and the key sits 1/4 farther away from the body of the alternator. After much screwing around with the alternator in and out of the car I decided the problem was the pulley which looks unlike the one on Rusty's site. Back to Car Quest where the guy presents me with the big box of pulleys which includes I guess all their leftover pulleys, he tells me to take it home and see if I can find one that fits. This is why I got to my local Car Quest. Anyway after much screwing around I end up taking 2 washers that were slightly undersized for the shaft on the alt and using the drum sander in my dremel tool to open them up to a good tight fit which spaced the original pulley out pretty much perfectly. Finally got it all buttoned up and I've never been so happy to see 14.4v! Ya see, Rusty? There IS a market for it? Why didn't I think about it in 1944 when we lived on that red and rocky farm in Franklin Co., NC? It sure as HELL wasn't worth much for growing crops for us. I remember watching 2 of my older brothers trying to plow it behind a mule - plow bounced the boys around as they held its handles up trying to get the plow dig into the hard, rocky soil. Re: [MBZ] Wooo boy!
Yeah I'm pretty tired, apologies if that didn't make sense, with some dinner in me lets see if I can do better. There are actually 2 differences in the new alt vs the old one. The shaft is longer and the mounting arms mount it farther back. The first is a problem because the pulley won't meet the key and the nut won't catch the pulley. The latter is obviously an issue because the pulley doesn't line up with the other pulleys. Fixing the latter issue halfway fixes the former so I took my spacers, one went under the alternator fan (which was too close on this alt anyway), the other just above the fan. That got the pulley pretty well situated, then I added some washers between the pulley and the nut which made up the other. Cranked it down with the impact gun (how did I ever get by without one?) and she's all good. -Curt Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2012 16:59:36 -0700 From: Craig diese...@pisquared.net To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Wooo boy! It's not entirely clear from your description that this modification puts the pulley on the new one the same distance from the alternator mounting bracket as it was on the old one. Is it? Do all of the sheaves (alternator, crank, water pump) line up properly? Finally got it all buttoned up and I've never been so happy to see 14.4v! Congratulations! Re: [MBZ] Skunky Front Loading Washer - OT
Our LG front loader doesn't really develop odor very often but when it does, it has a tub clean cycle, run that with a cup of bleach and it kills the odor for a good while. Allan Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com writes: Just thought I would toss this out for any list member that might have a front loading washer they have odor problems with If you had an older front loading washer, you may, from time to time, experience issues with mold or a skunky smell in the drum. And now to add a ceiling light fixture in the hallway in from of the pantry (so we can see in it, especially at night) Dan ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- Allan Streib ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Skunky Front Loading Washer - OT
No complaints. Water bill went WAY down (two teenage boys when we first got it) and it handles much larger loads than the previous high capacity Maytag did. Its been trouble free since day one, despite having been moved several times. It continues to wash away with no complaints so far. Many of the front loaders today have all sorts of froo-froo stuff on them, like steam and such. This is a really basic model with just a few different cycles and no fancy stuff, which suits me fine. What's up with a steam dryer? Seems kinda counterproductive. --R (sent from my miniPad) On Dec 28, 2012, at 8:50 PM, Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com wrote: Many of the front loaders today have all sorts of froo-froo stuff on them, like steam and such. Throw some corn sprouts in that thing and you could make some squeezins. --R (sent from my miniPad) On Dec 28, 2012, at 10:17 PM, Mountain Man maontin@gmail.com wrote: Greg wrote: Which Retsel do you have? I used to really like front loaders, to the point where I was going to buy my mom a coinless Speed Queen. But she didn't want to have to bend over to unload it, and with her machine placement under a good sized window I couldn't elevate them to laundrymat level. I ended up getting her a high efficiency top loader from Fisher and Paykel which cost half as much as the Speed Queen. By the time her dryer wore out, FP had a matching top load dryer, so I got her one of those. After I saw how convenient it was, I had to get myself a top loading dryer too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjwIOn5gmuk ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

--R wrote: Throw some corn sprouts in that thing and you could make some squeezins. Better to use steel grind wheels for corn squeezins. We used to use steel wheels to grind peanut butter, 20-years ago when we could purchase 30 pound boxes of peanuts for grinding - by hand. Not these days. We cannot find peanuts like that any more, affordable. We also loved the 5-gallon buckets of Deaf Smith (TX) peanut butter - none out there today. The peanut company in Portales, NM seems to make an affordable peanut butter, if the FDA would ever let them open again. Our stock of Kirkland peanut butter is dwindling. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
