[MBZ] Hundreds of cars torched in French New Year 'tradition'

2013-01-03 Thread Gerry Archer

Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday that 1,193 vehicles were torched
by French youths overnight in what has become a dubious New Year's Eve
tradition.

Hundreds of empty, parked cars go up in flames in France each New Year's
Eve, set afire by young revelers, a much lamented tradition that remained
intact this year with 1,193 vehicles burned, Interior Minister Manuel Valls
said Tuesday.
His announcement was the first time in three years that such figures have
been released. The conservative government of former President Nicolas
Sarkozy had decided to stop publishing them in a bid to reduce the crime --
and not play into the hands of car-torching youths who try to outdo each
other.
France's current Socialist government decided otherwise, deeming total
transparency the best method, and the rate of burned cars apparently
remained steady. On Dec. 31, 2009, the last public figure available, 1,147
vehicles were burned.
Like many countries, France sees cars set on fire during the year for many
reasons, including gangs hiding clues of their crimes and people making
false insurance claims.
But car-torching took a new step in France when it became a way to mark the
arrival of the New Year. The practice reportedly began in earnest among
youths -- often in poor neighborhoods -- in the 1990s in the region around
Strasbourg in eastern France.
It also became a voice of protest during the fiery unrest by despairing
youths from housing projects that swept France in the fall of 2005. At the
time, police counted 8,810 vehicles burned in less than three weeks.
Yet even then, cars were not burned in big cities like Paris, and that
remained the case this New Year's Eve. Minister Valls said the Paris
suburban region of Seine-Saint-Denis, where the 2005 unrest started, led the
nation for torched cars, followed by two eastern regions around Strasbourg.
For some, the decision to tell the public how many cars have been burned on
New Year's Eve is a mistake.
Bruno Beschizza, the national secretary for security matters in Sarkozy's
UMP party, said on iTele TV that publishing the numbers motivates youths to
commit such crimes. We know that neighborhoods compete, he said. Gang
rivalries center on who can torch the most cars, with claims made on social
networks like Facebook and Twitter, he said.

2013-01-03 Thread Chris James

Mitch, the 4-ETS 4matic system like the standard ETS (Electronic
Traction Support) on some models are similar in that there is no
throttle intervention, power/torque is regulated by brake application
only, forcing up to 25% of the available torque to a single wheel (in
the case of 4-ETS).

If either of the front tires aren't able to take their share of the
available power, your limited to backing off until traction is regained
at the rear (or your stuck!).

Do you have an early model S210 (98-99?) without the optional ESP
(Electronic Stability Program)? Something to be on the lookout for, if
anyone is in the market for a early 210 4matic. Little sense having
forward traction if the car is reluctant to go where you point it!

I've found that my new tires on the back break loose first under
throttle application in snow, the 4MATIC system doesn't prevent
wheelspin as well as I thought (if you don't back out of the throttle
when the yellow triangle starts blinking the car won't back off the
throttle for you, or at least doesn't back off as quickly as I
expected). The new tires are much better than the old, it understeers
horribly in the snow and the fronts lock up first under breaking. Maybe
there's less weight in the back, causing the back to spin first under
throttle?

Correct, it's a 1999 (last year before ESP became standard) without ESP.
I used to want a 2000-2003 wagon for the ESP, until I realized the 98-99 models
had more ground clearance. Now I want a 1999 with the ESP option.

2013-01-03 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Unfortunately, 205/70R14 is very hard these days. I'm running 195/70R14
Vredestein Hi Tracs on my 300D and they're excellent and not too horribly
expensive. The only 205/70R14 tire around thats very good is the
Vredestein Sprint Classic, but they're $200-250 each. They only make sense
on more valuable cars. They have a very low thread wear rating, so I never
expect them to last very long either... not ideal for a daily driver.

I'm a big fan of the smaller Sprint Classics in original sizes for earlier
cars like 185R14 and 175R14. They look and ride great and are reasonably
priced.

But something to think about: tires are one of the most
important safety features of your car. Buy the best you can afford and
avoid anything older than 4-5 years old. Stopping or turning in an
emergency situation is worth quite a bit!

Re: [MBZ] R107 wheel upgrades

2013-01-03 Thread John Reames
I've been using Michelin primacy on the w210's and pilots on the 123.

Big difference from the Pirelli (p4000?) that were on the 123, and the
Bridgestone potenza's that were on one of the 210's.

The P4000's had comparatively horrid traction (dry, abominable wet) and felt
like inner tubes or marshmallows for turns/cornering

The Bridgestone tires were okay-ish when it was dry, but were all over the
place when it was wet.

The other 210 had Conti Eco-whatever's on them, and there is a little
improvement from them, but the big difference is that the Conti's will slip a
belt if you look at them cross-eyed.

It's a good thing to be able to stop in the rain in a short enough distance
that the cars behind you have to unzip (to the sides) (I'm not saying it is a
good thing to do it, but its good to be able to when the idiots in front of you
play bumper cars...)

I put some schwab rubber on the E300D. They are pretty much garbage.
Excessive hydroplaning and inability to stick to the road even in dry
conditions. Not their most expensive, but supposed to be good. I put tires
on Gump twice and hit the jackpot both times. No idea why, but Gump would
stick to the road like a magnet.

I want that same feeling of riding on rails and sticking to the road with the
wheels on Froggy. I will not be doing any true winter driving, so a more
summer type compound would be my choice. Except the summer wheels turn to
rocks at common morning temps on the wet side. Michelin might have a good

Yes, dry-side summer roads can get a bit warmer, that's for sure.

Last set was whatever SWMBA got at Schwab, some Korean krap.
15 still wasn't a huge problem last I looked. The Michelins

SWMBA's busy racking up the miles on the X5. My current estimate

they went on. Not huge snow provocation, yet, but plenty of
opportunity already, especially on the ski trips.

When I bought tires at Costco for the 300SD the guy made me sign a
waiver as the tires available were not the proper (speed) rating. He
explained it had more to do with their ability to handle a big heavy car
thrashing around and do it according to the intent of the MB engineers.
For general driving it would not be an issue, but perhaps in some
evasive maneuvering the tires/car might not perform as the car was
designed. Since the proper tires either are not available for a 29yo
car, or would cost gobs of money, I think it is a reasonable tradeoff.

The speed rating affects not only how fast one can run the tire but also

I am just looking to get as much information as possible about the Zenith 35/40

medium red '68 250S. Good solid car, but it wasn't running right. Replaced
accelerator pumps, checked and adjusted chokes, but we could not get it to
idle. Even tried the lacquer thinner, but it would only idle with full choke.
So off to the carb shop they went, and I put the car into storage until the
spring thaw.

At that time, I will be completely doing the fuel tank and lines, the brake
system, power steering system, and I might even try and re-install the AC.

PS: In the meantime, I came across a '69 280SE locally with a seized engine
which I have for a parts car. I am lucky that my wife is a very patient woman!

Nice car. I had a 1970 280S that was a real beauty. 40k on it, one owner,
still had the protective plastic on the sun visors and passenger side map
pocket. No AC, which was a killer down here, as these things are like
greenhouses with all the glass.

It had dual Zeniths which ran quite well. Mileage still sucked, but it always
did on the carbureted models.

Re: [MBZ] Hundreds of cars torched in French New Year 'tradition'

2013-01-03 Thread OK Don
The country might be civilized, (or not), but the un-employeed youth are
not.

On Thu, Jan 3, 2013 at 3:02 AM, Gerry Archer arche...@embarqmail.comwrote:

Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday that 1,193 vehicles were
torched by French youths overnight in what has become a dubious New Year's
 Eve tradition.

But car-torching took a new step in France when it became a way to mark
the arrival of the New Year.
Minister Valls said the Paris
suburban region of Seine-Saint-Denis, where the 2005 unrest started, led
the nation for torched cars, followed by two eastern regions around
 Strasbourg.
For some, the decision to tell the public how many cars have been burned
on New Year's Eve is a mistake.

A few seconds job with the right tool and if you catch it before it

I replaced mine last year - the good news is, it's not a
difficult job - everything went exactly like the directions said.
I made a tool from an old metal coat hanger and that did the trick
- I had tried using a jumbo paper clip but it must not have been
strong enough as the coat hanger worked easily.

Got mine from Rusty with a new key to match the original key
after I provided my title and photo ID. Price was very reasonable
as usual...

I have a pair of Florsheims I have had for 24 years, though I do not wear
them every day. I took them to a shoe repair place in Santa Fe a couple
of years ago. That place restitched some of the seams and then resoled
them. Unfortunately, in trimming the sole to the size of the shoe, they
ground off too much on one of the shoes and the stitching on the toe is
already wearing through. With that and the stitching on the top of the
shoes failing, I may not have them repaired again.

I was given a pair of Bates Uniform Footware shoes and am considering
using them as my dress shoes. I just have to figure out how to sterilize
them before I start wearing them (not knowing if the fellow from whom I
got them had problems with Athlete's foot).

The shoe trees I have were a Christmas present 44 years ago.

Going to start breaking in a new pair of shoes

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Brian Toscano
I've enjoyed my Mephistos. My advise is to get quality repairs when
needed. In my case they last longer than several pairs of cheaper shoes
before they need any repairs. I was not happy with their sandals but the
shoes have been fine.

I'm not willing to pay $350 for them at least not yet!

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Two words: Allen Edmonds.

My Dad was an A-E guy all of his life, and I often hassled him about his
expensive shoes. I grew up and got smart.

The trick is to not buy them at list, but wait for the sales. Get on their
online mailing list. They had several online sales in the past month, which
are now expired. Find one of their retailers in your area and get fitted so
you know your size - this saves a lot of hassles with having to guess and
return shoes purchased online.

I wouldn't even have a lot of qualms about buying them at list. Here's why:

I have 6-7 pairs of A-E shoes in my closet right now. I have two more that
they refused to recraft, mainly because of their age. Of the pairs I still
wear, the NEWEST pair was purchased in 1996, with the others ranging in age all
the way back to 1991-2 or thereabouts.

I had the privilege of living in Port Washington, WI, where A-Es are made. If
you're lucky enough to be in the area, the first week of July is their tent
sale. This is the annual meeting for their salespeople, and they put up a
huge tent in front of the plant where they sell discontinued and factory
seconds at as much as 50% off. The salespeople staff the tent, so every person
you speak to knows the shoes better than any retail store clerk will.

The sales people will often point out why a particular shoe is a second, and
believe me, the stuff they showed me was imperceptible to me and probably every
other person who looked at them.

Most of my shoes have been recrafted at least once, which costs around $100
depending on the package you choose.

I can take a pair of brown tasseled wingtips I bought in 1994 for around $200
(a $400 shoe new) and add in the recrafting I had done around 2001 and I have a
shoe that cost me $300 that has lasted close to 20 years (and is still going.)

I do want some new black loafers and maybe another brown shoe, so I am planning
on making a trip to Port Washington in July. As far as I'm concerned, it's
money well spent.

On a related note, one of the finest shoe repair guys in the nation is about 40
minutes away from me in Lakeland, FL. He recrafted one of my pairs of A-Es for
the same price and did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him for any serious
shoe repair.

even if they cost more but last longer. Why else would so many hang on
to 10 or 20 year old Mercedes. I wear dress shoes everyday and have
finally discovered that more expensive shoes are worth it. But, with
leather soles they wear out. I just dropped off my favorite Cole Haan
shoes for soles and heels it was $65. That seems steep. But, they were
the most expensive and most comfortable dress shoes I have ever had.
I went ahead and had them do it.

 Anyone have other

When I enter the specific car data, the site comes back with no tire capable of
meeting the requirements. Special order, but the Discount boys are not
stocking appropriate rubber online. Not even in Plus 2

I am a cheap SOB, so not ready to put good cash out the door for bigger wheels

I want to wait. New rims are too far out of budget and the compromise of
bucket of cash to make the car look wrong versus bucket of cash to keep it
original are what I am facing today.

2013-01-03 Thread clay monroe
I am pretty sure you can find all sorts of tire from any diameter, the trick is
to find them with the performance speed ratings needed. The smaller wheel cars
of the past decade are probably going to be fine with an S rated tire, which is
about the best I can find for the 14. Not good enough for the application I
have. SO, you would have to look for expensive vintage/classic tires to keep a
20 year old car rolling.

Most of the little toyota or honda cars with small wheels are not expected to
stay out of the pull a part after 20 years on the road.

Not a one.

Maybe the CDI engines but probably not until you get to blue tech. The cars
are pretty forgettable in design and reliability. When they divested from
Chrysler, the quality began to increase to the point it was worth investing in
a benz once more. Sadly, they remain nothing special to look at.

We like the older ones because we recall seeing them when younger or lusting
after them as young adults. Maybe a parent or grandparent had one and we have
fond memories. If we think of older folks in a benz now, it is not going to be
a diesel and having not spread the diesel engine throughout the line, you do
not have the depth of models to chose from. All the benz from that period are
E class. The 210 was just ugly

For the past month or so my battery hasn't been holding a charge very well.
It's 8 plus years old so I figured it was failing plus I had to use a booster
pack to start it up yesterday. So anyway, I bought a new battery and installed
it today. I then drove up to Maine from Boston and at the end of the trip
noticed that the instrument cluster lights were dim. I then noticed that the
headlights were also dim. Duh, it's a failed alternator. My old battery was
probably just fine! Shoulda performed a load test! Time to call the Q.

For sandals or flip flop hybrids I go with Chacos. I got 4-5 years out of

easy, the hub caps are whats hard to find.

I'm not sure what I'm going to put them on... maybe my 83 300D in the
spring.

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
I used to buy brands like Florsheim and Bush/Nunn, which typically lasted me a
year under normal wear in a business environment. Maybe $100 for a good pair,
less if I could find them on sale.

One of the things about A-Es that can't be quantified is that they never have
to break in. That is, they are comfortable from the first time you put them on
- no breaking in, no sore back of the heels, etc., that you have with other
shoes. I don't know if it's the quality of materials or the way they are made,
but this is one part of A-Es that I have never found in another brand of shoes.

Allen-Edmonds are made in Port Washington, WI, and Belgium, WI (little town up
the road from Port Washington.)

Expense is relative. If you take the example I gave on the other list, I have
been wearing a shoe that cost me $300 over its life for over 20 years. Do that
math. It cost me $15/year. For that I'll pay big $$ up front.

I have to concur about the Allen Edmonds. I have a pair in cordovan leather-
not the color but the leather apparently made from horse hide or something and
let me tell you they are tough!
And don't laugh but during my pimpin' days back in Boston during the late 90's,
I bought a couple of Gucci shoes. They were also made from cordovan leather.
Wow are those shoes tough. I wore them clubbing, to bars, in the rain, snow and
sleet and they held up incredibly well- better than the Allen- Edmonds. Looking
back, I am horrified at what I paid for those shoes but I now realize that they
were a lifetime purchase. I Never have to buy another nice shoe again. For
everyday shoes I now pay $20-30 for whatever Timberland shoe is on clearance at
the Factory Outlet in Freeport, Maine.

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
We had a shoe truck that came to the plant at Kohler once a month. They sold
shoes for the employees on the factory floor. I wandered in one time and asked
if they had any dress safety shoes, which they did. I bought a pair of black
steel toed wing tips. Not sure what brand they were, but I only had to wear
them on the factory floor so they got very little wear.

There was a union steward who was a real dick to all of the white collar
employees. He would walk up and step on the toes of your shoes to see if you
were wearing steel toes - if not, he would file a complaint with the safety
committee.

I told a couple of people I worked with about my new shoes, who then followed
me out to the factory floor. Sure enough, Mr. Dick came walking up and stepped
on the toe of one of my shoes. He had a really strange look on his face when he
realized that I had steel toed shoes.

I tossed a shop towel at him and told him he owed me a shine.

My 250LWB had 15 steel wheels. I chose them instead of the 14 bundts that
were offered by the seller.

I think the car handled and drove a lot better with 15 wheels than the 123s I
had previously that had the 14 bundts.

This won't fix the tire size issue but some W123 240D and 280E models had
steel style wheels in aluminum alloy which take the hubcaps. These are what
my 240D has and are actually pretty sought after as many use them as an
upgrade for the W113 SLs. If ever you see a 240D in a junkyard, look for
 these wheels and grab 'em!

took off the torn boot, put the new rod on, and I had to drive 950
miles home in a storm with no boot whatsoever on the tie rod. 10,000
miles later my new rod is toast.

A baggie and two zip ties would have killed them?

I thought about trying to wrap it in something, but was in a hurry to get going
so I could get some sleep in Cleveland. About an hour and a half later, the rain
started in earnest, then snow after it got dark.

I would have been happier with a boot torn into two pieces, rather than totally
removed. The old tie rod they gave me still had half a boot on it. If the other
half was still on the rack it could have shielded the inner joint from direct
spray.

The agreement was for all old parts to be with the car. When I got home I
realized the only thing they'd given me was the inner tie rod with over 1/4 of
play in it. I didn't get the transmission conductor plate and valve spring, or
even the two extra dipstick tube covers after I had Rusty deliver three of them
to the seller.

[MBZ] Block Heater Question

2013-01-03 Thread W140
Well the element doesn’t have an infinite life, but with that being said, when
I worked in the High Arctic we would leave the vehicles plugged in all the time
we were not driving.
But just as a matter of economics if you were not going to drive it for a week
I would plug it in 24 hours before I started it.
You don’t mention the Outside air temperature (OAT) but if economics is not a
problem and your talking well below zero I would plug it in and leave it.
So to answer your question: The element doesn’t have an infinite life but no,
leaving it in for a week shouldn’t hurt.
