Well now the mech tells her that he has poked around and it has
confounded him. He found that the glow plug relay stays on for some
period after the car starts, which he somehow thinks is causing the
battery to run down. Some mention was made of a red wire coming from a
box going to short, but I am not sure which red wire or box. The girl
was going to find out, and take the car to the Benz shop next door.

It is clear the guy is not familiar with the car, guess I can't blame
him. The GPR is fairly new as are the glow plugs, so I doubt if that is
the problem. And even if it does stay on awhile that would not drain
the battery, unless it is stuck even with the key off, somehow.

She says the light comes on, so that should be OK -- in any case I don't
think that would drain the battery.

I gotta get this other car sorted and get it up to her and get this one
back.

Re: [MBZ] kick down switch - loss of 1st Gear

2013-08-09 Thread Larry T

Hi Gang -
Just to update everyone on the status of my non functioning 1st
gear. Turns out it doesn't just fail to engage with kickdown from a
stop - it also does not respond to pulling the gear lever all the way to
the lowest selection. After several emails between me and Sun Valley -
who has been helpful - my warranty expired last Apr BTW...

after trying several things such as adjusting the shift cable (white on
my 91 300D) that goes across the rear of the cam cover about 8-10 from
the firewall. I turned it CCW and it changed the shift points later
than originally set so it accelerates faster because it revs up farther
until shifting up.

After reporting this to Sun Valley (with no improvement in 1st gear
activity) the said possibly the 1-2 shift valve may be stuck. I had the
ATF changed at 12k after the rebuilt AT was installed BTW. Sun Valley
suggested I put a bottle of Prolong transmission Fluid in and drive it.
He said that product seems to actually meet the makers claims of
improving lubricating between surfaces. Don't know how he quantitied
that decision but at this point we're just trying different things
hoping to get 1st back..

Still don't have 1st but it is definitely more drivable. Before, when
leaving a stop light it would feel as though it was bogging down until
the revs got to the 3000 rpm range where the turbo was fully spooled up.

More as things happen.

[MBZ] sunroof not powering open? - W123

2013-08-09 Thread ernest breakfield

hi all!

seems the sunroof in our 300D isn't wanting to open; there's a
'click' audible from the front edge (that sounds like it might be a
latch?) when we hit the switch, and if it's really quiet we can hear
what sounds like what i imagine might be the cable shifting slightly in
its track from along the left rear area of the roof.
local indy MBZ guy took a quick look at it and suspects that the
fiber gear in the motor might be stripped, but says he can't source that
independent of the motor, and the motors are only available to him from
through the dealer for several hundred dollars.

i know this isn't something everyone cares about, but we miss it
greatly. here in California, our sunroof gets enjoyed pretty much any
time we're below about 40MPH and it's not raining. we (and our dog)
would very much like it back.

any tips, hints, links or clues to share that might help us get
this operational again? the only thing i turned up in a quick Google
search that looked promising was a kit and book from Mercedes Source,
and i wanted to check with the collective wisdom of the group to see if
there might be something else that i should look into first, or as well.

thanks in advance for your help!

2013-08-09 Thread Randy Bennell

Hi Larry

Congratulations to you too!
As I said in the post you have responded to, we were celebrating the
anniversary of our first date by going out for some good steak.
We celebrated 40 years of marriage on Aug 3 with friends who were
married on the same date but 17 years ago. His parents were married the
same date as well but 45 years ago. We went out for another good steak.
Hardly need an excuse but we did enjoy it.

Not quite sure how we have managed to make it this far. Just lucky I guess.
Don't expect to make it another 40 but hopefully at least another 25 or
more.

Try pulling off the filter cover and squirting a little gas into the carb

Ok, so we know it is starving for fuel.
Now the question is why?

Fuel pickup in the tank and hose to carb.
Carb is probably also acting as the fuel pump via a diaphram etc.
I assume this model does not have a primer bulb.

Might try adjusting the screws in the carb as was suggested earlier, as
a first attempt.
Would not think the filter should be plugged or the pump dead so soon as

Re: [MBZ] sunroof not powering open? - W123

2013-08-09 Thread Dave Cavner
e -

I'd just be guessing what is wrong from this distance, but I've posted a couple
links below. Sunroof problems have been discussed to death on many of the MB
web forums. I'm sure there is good info in this list archive too but I've never
been as successful targeting specifics here as I have elsewhere.

Cable/ motor repair:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123SunRoofRepair

Where to locate the motor so you can check the gear yourself and how to
manually operate the roof when the motor goes.:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1616247-w123-power-sunroof-problems.html

Section 77 of the MB factory manual is very helpful in understanding the what,
where and how of the sliding roof assembly.

 hi all!

seems the sunroof in our 300D isn't wanting to open; there's a
'click' audible from the front edge (that sounds like it might be a
latch?) when we hit the switch, and if it's really quiet we can hear
what sounds like what i imagine might be the cable shifting slightly in
its track from along the left rear area of the roof.
local indy MBZ guy took a quick look at it and suspects that the
fiber gear in the motor might be stripped, but says he can't source that
independent of the motor, and the motors are only available to him from
through the dealer for several hundred dollars.

i know this isn't something everyone cares about, but we miss it
greatly. here in California, our sunroof gets enjoyed pretty much any
time we're below about 40MPH and it's not raining. we (and our dog)
would very much like it back.

any tips, hints, links or clues to share that might help us get
this operational again? the only thing i turned up in a quick Google
search that looked promising was a kit and book from Mercedes Source,
and i wanted to check with the collective wisdom of the group to see if
there might be something else that i should look into first, or as well.

thanks in advance for your help!

 cheers!
 e

Now we are getting somewhere.
There is a problem with the primer system if you cannot pretty easily
flood the thing with it.

I have a similar issue with a weed eater. The hoses and primer bulb fell
apart and I got a kit to replace them. Have not finished the job but
need to so that I can use it again. I put the new primer bulb on but
still need to swap the hoses.

I would guess it should be possible to get a kit for the saw and put
some new parts on that will hopefully solve your problem.

Re: [MBZ] ACA

2013-08-09 Thread Larry T
Well, if 12-18million illegal aliens can break the law by illegally
crossing our border (an infraction that can get you shot or imprisioned
(as in mexico) in most countries) and our fed govt takes the tactic of
ignoring those law breakers -- if we can get a similar number to refuse
to enroll will they come after us? Why would they justify chasing down
12-18 million people for not signing on to insurance when they won't
chase down a similar number who broke a law (illegally crossing our
border0 that is one of the few things the constitution says the federal
Government is authorized to do?

IMO if we can get a similar number of people to refuse to sign they will
find something else to do... Of course, the illegal aliens are
potential demorat voters so the powers that be tend to be permissive -
while those who might refuse to sign the insurance plan are people who
might also be members of Tea Parties. And we already now the
administrations vision of the TP.

Speaking of illegal aliens breaking a law that the fed now chooses to
stop prosecuting, when will they decide murder is OK? Or train/bank
robbery? The fed has already chosen to ignore law breakers who
intimidate voters. Why not murderers? What has become of America?

BTW, I missed the last gun thread --- if I may add a small comment --
instead of doing deep background checks for all gun transfers, how about
deep background checks for people wanting to run for office (the job
done previously by the news media) and posting any law breaking history
on the internet?

The lack of enforcement tools takes all the fun out of not paying.
However, since I'll be filing a protest return explaining why I'm not
even discussing my health insurance with them, there's a fair chance
they'll try to prosecute me for exercising my First Amendment rights
in the form of a 'tax protest'.

Refusing to Pay
The penalty will be paid to the IRS along with an individual’s taxes.
The IRS cannot criminally prosecute individuals who refuse to pay the
penalty. Also, the IRS cannot file a notice of federal tax lien (NFTL)
or “levy any property in an effort to collect the penalty” (CRS, page
7). However, the government could deduct the penalty amount from any
IRS tax-funded checks or other government payments.

For more information on how the government plans on collecting
delinquent payments, click here »

Chief Justice John Roberts acknowledged that the penalty amount “will
be far less than the price of insurance, and, by statute, it can never
be more.” He, also, went on to add that some Americans may find it a
“reasonable financial decision” to pay the penalty rather than
purchase insurance.

Exemptions, Exemptions
Individuals who are not required to file a tax return, or whose income
is below the federal poverty line are among those who will be exempt
from the mandate’s penalty. For 2012 poverty thresholds, click here »

Other exemptions include:

* Financial hardship
* Religious objections
* Those without coverage for less than three months
* Undocumented immigrants
* Incarcerated individuals
* Members of Indian tribes
* Those not able to pay for coverage that exceeds 8% of household
income

IMO that's a VW mentality that goes way back - at least to the '50s and
'60s when the radio speaker was on the driver side - they were trying to
make the driver happy because they were usually the decision maker when
it came to buying new vehicles one of the VW old timers told me
that when I was a teenager working as a mechanics apprentice in the late
60s. (If I had been older I may have figured it out for myself) ;-)

You are using the choke, right? These 2-stroke carbs require choking to
suck fuel into the passages from the diaphragm chamber to the jets. You can
flood it that way but if the fuel passages have drained (or boiled off) it
will not start without choke.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD battery/alternator problem

2013-08-09 Thread Scott Ritchey

It is normal for newer (pencil-style) glow plugs to stay on for a couple
minutes after engine start. This produces smoother and cleaner idle until
the engine warms up. On older cars (like my 82)the alternator isn't big
enough to supply all the load for those few minutes so some battery
discharge occurs but it is quickly recharged in a mile or two. But it is
quite possible for the glow logic to stick or fail, which would drain the
battery even with a good alternator. A couple voltage checks at the battery
would be in order. Like I mentioned, a free quick check at Autozone,
Advanced, Pep, etc. will tell you if the alternator and battery are working
right. They have a cart they wheel out to your car and it only takes 10
minutes if they aren't busy.

I gotta get this other car sorted and get it up to her and get this one
back.

light doesn't come on with the key in run the alternator may not charge.
So
I'd first insure that light comes on when the key is first turned to on or

Going that, you probably need a real mechanic unless daughter unit fancies

[MBZ] Jabba -- Glow plug relay

2013-08-09 Thread Rich Thomas

So the daughter unit took the car back to the shop that had the
regulator replaced maybe 3 weeks ago, symptoms the same -- batttery
dying, not charging.

Mech sends it back to the alt shop, tells them to figure it out. They
narrow it down to a red wire from the fuse box that was drawing
current. (Did not say whether with car running or not)

Mech pokes around and finally determines the glow plug relay is not
shutting off properly, during his testing was staying on for 3-4min and
drawing current, keeping voltage the alt/batt system low. Replaces GPR
and says that fixes it. He speculates it was not shutting off other
times, continuing to draw down battery after car was shut off (I'm not
sure if that is possible) or sucking enough juice the battery was not
charging.

I put a new GPR in the car in March 2010, got it from Rusty $130. Not
sure what kind, but it had a Benz part number. Mech says he put one in
that he was able to get for $254, an HUC which is probably chinee (and
maybe the other one was too). JABBA -- WHAT IS THAT BRAND?

I told him when the shop replaced the regulator pack on the alt that
obviously did not fix the problem, so that was a wasted $250 or so.
Total for this latest adventure is $453.40. So now $700 into this
problem. He just rang me and knocked $75 off, understood that the alt
shop was a waste but that is now sunk cost.

BAH. I hate not being able to work on my cars!

 hi all!

seems the sunroof in our 300D isn't wanting to open; there's a
'click' audible from the front edge (that sounds like it might be a
latch?) when we hit the switch, and if it's really quiet we can hear
what sounds like what i imagine might be the cable shifting slightly in
its track from along the left rear area of the roof.
local indy MBZ guy took a quick look at it and suspects that the
fiber gear in the motor might be stripped, but says he can't source that
independent of the motor, and the motors are only available to him from
through the dealer for several hundred dollars.

i know this isn't something everyone cares about, but we miss it
greatly. here in California, our sunroof gets enjoyed pretty much any
time we're below about 40MPH and it's not raining. we (and our dog)
would very much like it back.

any tips, hints, links or clues to share that might help us get
this operational again? the only thing i turned up in a quick Google
search that looked promising was a kit and book from Mercedes Source,
and i wanted to check with the collective wisdom of the group to see if
there might be something else that i should look into first, or as well.

thanks in advance for your help!

 cheers!

IMO that's a VW mentality that goes way back - at least to the '50s and
'60s when the radio speaker was on the driver side - they were trying to
make the driver happy because they were usually the decision maker when it
came to buying new vehicles one of the VW old timers told me that
when I was a teenager working as a mechanics apprentice in the late 60s.

Re: [MBZ] I fought the saw and the saw won

2013-08-09 Thread WILTON
Reminds me: 'Bout 25 years ago, a black walnut tree had fallen across part
of a rental house that I owned. I began cutting it in the upper limbs (now
horizontal and near the ground, of course) with a small Homelite saw that
would not run at idle - had to keep giving it short throttle spurts between
cuts to keep it going. 'Had gotten most of the limbs fairly well done, but
I had to get up on a stepladder to get one that I was unable to reach from
the ground. As I was about finish the cut, I paused and studied the limb's
fall a little more closely. My thoughts were something like this: If I
don't make the finish cut fast enough, the limb will swing down, hit the
ground on the outer end and swing against the ladder knocking me to the
ground, but if I can cut fast enough, maybe I can make it fall nearly flat
and stay away from the ladder. I continued the cutting - yep, you guessed
it - the limb swung downward, hit on the outer end and then fell inward
against the ladder. As I was falling and jumping backward off the ladder, I
threw the saw way off the right at about 2 o'clock. As I was getting up, I
realized that the saw was lying across the yard idling perfectly, and
continued to do so henceforth. What it needed was a good throwing/tossing
across the yard.

isolated, poorer parts of Bolivia, where police and other authorities
are scarce.

Sounds like they have found a way to remove the need for police and
other authorities

I know this was discussed in early June - I am slow at catching on on my
mail reading...

[MBZ] 80's M-B Dealer Salesman Training Vid

2013-08-09 Thread Chris James

I got such a kick out of watching this MB Dealer Sales Training vid on
YouTube! Loved seeing all the models from a bygone era!

It's an hour long, but has many interesting (even amusing) segments,
catch a bit here there if you can't watch it all at once!

Here we see a potential customer discussing his #1 priority
(dependability) with a Mercedes-Benz salesman. You spend that kind of
money for a car, it's got to go when you want it to go!

If it's sucking fuel, the carby should be full.
