Divide them up into serving-size portions, bag them up in ZIP-Loc bags,
and then freeze them. When you want some chiles, take out a bag and let
them thaw. Once thawed, they will stay good a week or so, maybe even two
weeks -- I wouldn't push it though. Frozen, they will stay good 6 months
to a year.

Re: [MBZ] a new englander called today

2013-09-13 Thread Gary Hurst
i'm really only in florida as my mother is aged and essentially daft and
not quite able to manage her own affairs on a day to day basis. i would
prefer renting a room above a store in downtown hendersonville, NC, or
maybe someplace equivalent in maine. now my daughter has run away from her
mother and joined us here too, so the circus is in town all day every day.
not sure if you can see this, but this is her school ID

https://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1185955_581194845276372_1134006160_n.jpg

and this is her impression of me

https://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1004852_560006047395252_342547073_n.jpg

south florida is a weird place, but i don't interact much with the
natives. the hebrew towers north is near the beach, which is all russian
mafia and where english is the 5th language. while the russians control
the beach (they love the beach everywhere. reminds them of life in old
odessa!), most of the rest of the culture is spanish language. to my west
not a mile away it become haitian desolation for several miles, after which
there is actual american suburbia until one hits the everglades. throw in
maybe a couple of hundred thousand homeless and near homeless, largely
substance abusers and mental patients, and you can complete your picture

but i honestly like it here in winter as it is just flooded with tourists
and you can swim in the ocean in january. summer is about half the year
though and it is fairly dismal

Yes, they are a big deal here in New Mexico. They were grown in Hatch, NM.

You roast them over a fire so you can peel the skins off and then use
them in your food.

Here they have cylindrical cages about 3' in diameter and about 5' long
made of wire mesh. Part of the circumference is a door through which one
adds or removes chiles (chee-lays -- quite a bit different than chili).
After the peppers are loaded inot the cage, a motor starts it rotating on
its axis. Below the axis are three LARGE propane burners that are fired
up to roast the chiles. After the appropriate time roasting (which
produces a very typical New Mexico fall smell), the burners are turned
down to pilot, while the cage continues to rotate to cool the chiles.
When they are cooled down enough, they are loaded into a black trash bag
and given to the customer.

At our local Smith's supermarket, they have one of these burners attached
to a 500 gallon propane tank sitting outside the store on the sidewalk. A
customer will buy a bag or box of chiles in the store and then bring it
out to have his chiles roasted before going home.

You can do it in a propane barbecue, too, though the purpose-built chile
roaster does a better job more quickly.

Hey Kevin - I think I suggested that car to the list - a friends
daughter had gotten it as a hand me down. My friend used to work at
NASA and we met when Sailing from the same marina

At least that sounds like the one...

Agreed it's phsycological, but in my case it ruined a working car. A nice
240D at that. We rescued it from down around Richmond, VA. (Me and the son

parked under or near some pine trees. We put a good new battery in it and
got it to start and drove it to a car wash to get off as much crap as
humanly possible. Then we drove back up to my B-I-L's place in Northern VA
to rest up before the drive back to Pittsburgh. It was quite the adventure.

The story on the car was that it was purchased by a mail carrier after he
retired. He kept it up for a good number of years and passed it onto to his
daughter. She drove it for 2 years and then parked it under some trees in
the next door neighbor's yard. I think we paid $500 for it. The tires were
either shot or dry rotted and it needed a new exhaust downpipe or header, I
can't remember which. But it had good power climbing back up to Breezewood
from the PRM (People's Republic of Maryland). My wife was driving and I
told her to keep her foot in it to loosen up and blow out any carbon. She
listened well enough.

They can LOOK perfect but have a hairline crack. My 78 240D drove me
crazy looking all over for relays, grounds, etc before I saw the fuse
arc when my wife pressed the brake pedal! I must have checked the
fuses 3 times before finding that small crack!

Replace them!

Theres a couple actually. The 18 relay is the "load reduction relay" which
turns off the daytime running lamps and such when you start the car. Mine seems to be
good, I can apply power and make it click and see continuity. I can see power to it in
the fuse box too.

The other one is the 109 which is the main ECM (the computer basically). The
thing is if that one fails usually the car won't start but mine does start and
runs fine...

7 fuses involved Wilton. I pulled every fuse out, checked and cleaned it and
put it back. Not the same as replacing them but they all look perfect.

Don't these cars have a master relay or something similar that can die?

Back in the day some folks would carry a spare.

yeah, well, this didn't come from me. you know it really came from me if
it has a sticker on it with the cartoon dr fatty

i don't really ship and what little i personally ship ends up being handed

miss him and drive it over to fedex, where i can drop off till later), but
i have no accounts

maybe go parcel post or if that is too much just wrap them super tight and
say they are books and go media rate?

Re: [MBZ] a new englander called today

2013-09-13 Thread Dan Penoff
Yes, he did. So did Bob, his old buddy, who had several of them, I believe.

I just saw one come up on BenzWorld. The guy thought he had hit the jackpot,
only to learn that while somewhat rare, these don't have a lot of value, say,
like a 113 SL would.

Worst case is that depending on who did the conversion (there were at least two
companies that did them, Binz and one other) parts can be pretty much
unobtanium.

While they are definitely unique and appeal to some who love wagons, like me,
there's not a groundswell of desire for them.

[MBZ] Vinny Speaks!

2013-09-13 Thread Dan Penoff
Can't remember which list it was on, so I'm crossposting.

Remember the beater Pullman that just came up on FleaBay for $50K? I dropped
the guy a note and asked about pictures of the engine compartment, of which he
had two. I suggested that his expectations were a *little* optimistic, and
that at best the car was maybe worth $5k for the parts.

Here's his response:

OK THANKS, IF YOU KNOW ANY OTHERS FOR SALE LIKE THIS FOR $5K PLEASE LET ME KNOW
I WILL PURCHASE EVERY ONE YOU FIND FOR THAT PRICE.

Anyone got a Pullman parts car they want to get rid of?

Make sure the main buss line from the positive contact on the starter
is still connected. It can slip back away from the battery cable when
a new starter is installed, and if you miss it, no juice.

Also check for a "pigtail" at the battery, could be unplugged.

And look under the dash, might not be a hot wire to the ignition
anymore!

[MBZ] Another Sondy Tale

2013-09-13 Thread WILTON

Well, a little bit of Sondy Tale, anyway.

THULE GOOD PREP FOR SONDRESTROM
By Wilton Strickland

During my initial trip to Sondrestrom AB, Greenland, on Friday, Feb 4, 1978,
I flew aboard an Air Force C-141 from McGuire AFB, NJ, to Thule Air Base,
Greenland, 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 950 miles from the North
Pole, arriving there at about 2 PM in the dark and with ambient temperature
at -45° F. 'Stayed overnight in a room called "The Queen's Suite," equipped
with the only bathtub in Greenland; also had a commode raised a couple of
steps above the floor to allow waste to flow into a storage tank underneath.
'Took a late afternoon nap before walking a half block or so to the Officers
Club for dinner. Meanwhile, I had removed my down ski jacket from my
baggage and made good use of it. 'Left the next morning at about 11 AM for
the 700-mile trip south to Sondrestrom; it was still dark and temperature
was still -45° F at Thule. Because I did not yet have an Air Force parka, I
continued to make good use of my down ski jacket by wearing it over my class
A uniform. Arrived at Sondrestrom at about 1 PM in bright sunlight and
temperature of about -20° F. After nearly a day or so and an overnight at
Thule in the dark and -45° temperature, Sondrestrom looked and felt like the
tropics, and I was glad to be there. The little side trip to Thule, then,
served as excellent psychological preparation for Sondrestrom.
