So once they are roasted how long do they typically stay good?

Yes, they are a big deal here in New Mexico. They were grown in Hatch, NM.

You roast them over a fire so you can peel the skins off and then use
 them in your food.

Here they have cylindrical cages about 3' in diameter and about 5' long
made of wire mesh. Part of the circumference is a door through which one
adds or removes chiles (chee-lays -- quite a bit different than chili).
After the peppers are loaded inot the cage, a motor starts it rotating on
its axis. Below the axis are three LARGE propane burners that are fired
up to roast the chiles. After the appropriate time roasting (which
produces a very typical New Mexico fall smell), the burners are turned
down to pilot, while the cage continues to rotate to cool the chiles.
When they are cooled down enough, they are loaded into a black trash bag
 and given to the customer.

At our local Smith's supermarket, they have one of these burners attached
to a 500 gallon propane tank sitting outside the store on the sidewalk. A
customer will buy a bag or box of chiles in the store and then bring it
out to have his chiles roasted before going home.

You can do it in a propane barbecue, too, though the purpose-built chile
roaster does a better job more quickly.

Re: [MBZ] 2013 Ig Nobel Prizes

2013-09-13 Thread Andrew Strasfogel
Inasmuch as I'm scientifically trained, these don't seem funny to me - at
all.

On Fri, Sep 13, 2013 at 4:17 AM, Gerry Archer arche...@embarqmail.comwrote:

The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama before he
had a chance to start a war has cast Nobel prizes into such disrepute that
the Ignobel Prizes have risen above them in importance. Here are the 2013
 winners:

Stargazing dung beetles, mice that survive for longer after heart surgery
when they listen to opera, and whether or not you could walk on water on
other planets - all of them are serious scientific questions that
researchers sweated over for years. On Thursday, their hard work was
honoured with possibly one of the most sought-after nods from their
scientific peers: an Ig Nobel prize.

This is the 23rd year of the awards - a spoof of the even more prestigious
Nobel prizes, which will be announced next month. The 10 prizes, organised
by the humour magazine Annals of Improbable Research and awarded at Harvard
University, honour achievements that first make people laugh, and then
 make them think.

The joint astronomy and biology prize went to Eric Warrant's team at the
University of Lund for their discovery that dung beetles navigate using the
 stars.
The researchers had been studying the beetles' ability to roll their balls
of dung in straight lines by using the moon as a guide - they use the
pattern of polarised light around the moon as a kind of celestial compass.
One night, however, the night was moonless yet we noticed the beetles
could still orient in straight lines, said Warrant. At first we were
shocked and worried that our previous experiments using the moon were
wrong. But then looking up we saw the broad stripe of light that is the
Milky Way and realised they might be using this as a compass cue. This, it
 turns out, was the case.
Warrant said other nocturnal navigators such as birds and moths may also
use the Milky Way as a compass.
And there's a potential practical use too, he added. The principles we
are uncovering in dung beetle navigation may be useful in the design of
autonomous vehicles and robots, although this is likely to be few years
 off.

Masanori Niimi, of Teikyo University in Tokyo, won the medicine prize for
his finding that mice given heart transplants survived longer when they
listened to particular music. Whereas mice normally survived an average of
seven days, those that listened to Verdi's opera La Traviata survived 27
days. Those listening to the Irish singer Enya survived 11 days.

Brad Bushman, of Ohio State University, won the psychology prize for
confirming the familiar sense of feeling more attractive when you've had a
 few too many drinks.
In his study, participants had to make a speech about how attractive,
original and funny they were, which was rated by independent judges.
Those who were drunk when they made the speech (and even those who thought
they were drunk) gave themselves more positive self-evaluations.
But the ratings from independent judges showed this was unrelated to
 actual performance.
Drunk people might think they are more attractive, but they actually are
not, said Bushman. This false belief may get drunk people into trouble,
for example if they come on too strong to a potential romantic partner
because they think they are irresistible.

The probability prize was awarded to animal scientists at Scotland's Rural
College for making two related discoveries. First, that the longer a cow
has been lying down, the more likely that cow will soon stand up, read
their citation. And second, that once a cow stands up, you cannot easily
predict how soon that cow will lie down again.
Bert Tolkamp said he and his colleagues were running several research
programmes aimed at improving animal health and welfare. In their
award-winning research, they fitted sensors on cows' legs that recorded how
long the animals spent standing up or lying down.

The physics prize went to a study looking at how weak gravity would have
to be on a planet for someone to be able to run across a lake of liquid
water without sinking. Alberto Minetti, of the University of Milan, and
Yuri Ivanenko, of the Italian Research Hospital, suspended volunteers above
a wading pool to simulate their weights on different planets under
different gravity fields, and asked them to walk on water. Their results
showed people could probably walk across ponds of liquid water on the moon
 but probably not on Mars.
Minetti said: A serious implication is to stimulate thinking about the
discrepancy between the (relatively fast) timing of space exploration and
the long-lasting evolution that would be required to adapt actual living
beings to locomote in different gravity environments.

The Ig Nobels were handed out by Nobel prizewinners, including the physics
laureates Roy Glauber, Frank Wilczek and Sheldon Glashow. Marc Abrahams,
editor of the Annals of Improbable

Well here in RI we make a unique clear chowder. My favorite but we make the
milk kind for the non RI attendees at ChowdaQ. We also have Curt's fabulous
bacon burgers john's RI clamcakes. They are like southern hush puppies
with clams in them. When we have one in maine we will have to to have
lobstah stew lobstah rolls. Right Dimitri?

Mitch.

That's weird. The scientologists have probably spent several billion
dollars buying and building in Clearwater. Big scandal over death of a
follower who was kept captive and given one of their treatments. I think
they finally settled with the relatives.

Also, you've probably heard/read about the Koran-burning pastors arrest:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-pastors-plan-to-burn-2998-copies-of-the-koran-to-mark-911-ends-in-arrest-8811355.html

All sorts of interesting people seem to wind up in Florida and do strange
things. Seems to affect the locals as well. For example, several years ago
we had a city councilman pull a banana on another councilman and aim it
straight at him.

it's becoming harder and harder to find stuff _/not /_made in

I've been told stuff can be mad in China to high quality but only
if the buyer stays vigilant and monitors the whole process. They will

They have lived under the reaction to the reaction to the initial offenses of
the late 50's. We would have unseated the Saudis had they not been fairly
malleable and willing to play as long as we did not mess with them. The
Israelis are akin to the persians. They survived the events of Hitler, and
have become a very reactionary and dangerous society. The bulk of the
population has no personal knowledge of what their grandparents went through,
and have built up a mythos based on the stories they are told, not what they
have done themselves. Iran has the mythos of our meddling, the rise of the
shah, and the reaction that caused the ayatollah to show up. Thirty years on,
they have their parents to tell them stories of how it was under the shah, or
listen to grandma.

In the meanwhile, they are just as greedy for western things as the chinese.
It took them 25 years after Nixon to become a viable threat to our economy. In
the past 18 years, they have destroyed our industrial base, flooded our markets
with garbage and bought up all our debt. We have become enslaved to the
chinese.

Will it take forty or sixty years before we rise up?

yeah, that's the part - it's the lower third as you described -- has a

I firmly believe that for its time frame that Green Acres was one of the best
shows on TV. Simple but solid humor, predictable but out there as well, with

it was almost believable.

I don't think they even jumped the shark like many series do towards the end of

For automotive parts I have to agree with you, for other stuff not so much.
I've been buying Wigwam socks made in the USA, actually lately I bought Darn
Tough socks made a couple hours from here in Vermont. They're more expensive
(the Darn Tough are very expensive) but more comfortable and seem to wear
better.
My hiking boots were made in Italy. Again expensive but we're in year #2 of
being worn daily. The soles are going to fail before year 3 is out but to wear
2.5x as long for only x2 money is worth it. They're also still waterproof which
never happens after about the 6 month mark with lesser boots.

American Apparel is all made in USA.

Oh, almost forgot about the Red Wing boots that started me on my made in the
USA kick, best work boots I've ever had.

it's becoming harder and harder to find stuff _/not /_made in
China!   With automotive parts I worry about counterfeit parts that make
it into the system.  Back in the 80s there were a lot of fasteners that
looked and were marked like the OEM parts but they failed much earlier
than they should.

I've been told stuff can be mad in China to high quality but only
if the buyer stays vigilant and monitors the whole process. They will
cut corners when possible as that puts more money in their pockets...

the rickety vehicle suffers numerous breakdowns, the apple prices begin to drop. Finally,
Lisa's hotscakes come to the rescue.

His beater truck blows a head gasket. They walk to a local diner where Oliver uses the phone to call a garage

rectangular pan, then using the lid of a pot to cut out the hotscakes.

When she lifts off the excess (cooked) batter, it's in the form of a head

Next thing you see is them driving the old trick down the road, with the hotscakes

2013-09-13 Thread Gary Hurst
this is for a 300SDL? cruise control amps are readily available for that
car. i tend to prefer the beckmann rebuilds but most of the rebuilds are
the programa as they are cheaper and produced in large volume. my guess is
he sold you a programa rebuild as that is basically what most everyone
sells, but if he sent you a beckmann, he stepped up for you. low 300s is
pretty standard price for that. and to be clear, i'm not so much anti
programa as such, but just prefer a cottage industry type build over some
mass produced (possibly offshore, but i'd have to check) rebuild.

as for your garage, my guess is that they were talking about a new one from
benz rather than a rebuild . it's possible that there would only be 1 at MB
at the time. the price they quoted seems a little on the high side too for
a new unit

Re: [MBZ] MB factoid

2013-09-13 Thread WILTON
Unit is not visible until the driver side only after under-dash panel is
removed; then ya hafta look up under the dashboard and forward above and
slightly left of brake pedal. Unit is mounted vertically with the long,
narrow sides facing front and aft. Cable plugged into top, short, narrow
side.
Jim Carey can usually rebuild/resolder them. Others on list have also
resoldered them. Because of my tremor, I haven't tried it.

'Glad I got the good unit from the SDL before it left the yard.

I got the part from Rusty, $316. and $105 for installation. The local
garage doing the installation told me they could only find one in all of
US

and it was +1,000. I called Rusty and told the garage I can get it for
them, thanks to Rusty.
I still haven't figured out where it is located though. The old one when
taken out looked like new, I sent it back re core charge.

[MBZ] 2013 Ig Nobel Prizes

2013-09-13 Thread Gerry Archer

University, honour achievements that first make people laugh, and then make
them think.

One night, however, the night was moonless yet we noticed the beetles could
still orient in straight lines, said Warrant. At first we were shocked and
worried that our previous experiments using the moon were wrong. But then
looking up we saw the broad stripe of light that is the Milky Way and
realised they might be using this as a compass cue. This, it turns out, was
the case.
Warrant said other nocturnal navigators such as birds and moths may also use
the Milky Way as a compass.
And there's a potential practical use too, he added. The principles we are
uncovering in dung beetle navigation may be useful in the design of
autonomous vehicles and robots, although this is likely to be few years

But the ratings from independent judges showed this was unrelated to actual
performance.

The physics prize went to a study looking at how weak gravity would have to
be on a planet for someone to be able to run across a lake of liquid water
without sinking. Alberto Minetti, of the University of Milan, and Yuri
Ivanenko, of the Italian Research Hospital, suspended volunteers above a
wading pool to simulate their weights on different planets under different
gravity fields, and asked them to walk on water. Their results showed people
could probably walk across ponds of liquid water on the moon but probably
not on Mars.

Marc Abrahams,
editor of the Annals of Improbable Research and founder of the Ig Nobel
awards, was due to end the ceremony with the traditional goodbye: If you
didn't win an Ig Nobel prize tonight - and especially if

Easily accessible is a relative term. It's not bad if you are
young,

agile, and have eagle vision. Being well past 50, not so flexible
anymore, and blind without the correct strength of bifocal or
cheater
unless I don't have my contacts in (at which point I can only see

six inches), that amp is a pain.

Better than the evaporator I still need to put in the 87 300D though.

Are the Programa guys any good?

FWIW, one of my customers' units had a Programa sticker on it.
IIRC, it looked like fairly sloppy work inside.

My notes:

Opened October 4 2006: 8:00 PM:
Note: Was obviously resoldered before, at least partially (pushbutton
pins). Definitely had the same problem as the last one where
the solder didn't stick well to the 2-lead components during
resoldering, especially the jumper wires. (There were plenty
of signs that the original solder job had something of the
same problem.) I used the Dremel wire brush to burnish all
the joints, especially the exposed parts of the leads, before
beginning resoldering. This definitely helped, the majority
of the pins resoldered much easer than the last time. Both
lamps work and look good. Unfortunately the last guy to work
on it broke off the plastic pin that holds on the thumbwheel.
I tried to glue it back together and it made the situation
worse. Ran out of time and will have to take another stab at
it later.

Note: I slotted the broken-off end and used Shoe Goo to glue a small
toothy metal spine into the slots. When dry I peeled off all
the glue on the outside, which left the pin intact but too
wiggly. I then used cyanoacrylate glue to fill the center,
then sprayed it with accelerant. When the smoking stopped,
the pin was rigid. A little work with the Dremel saw cleaned
out the grooves in the side of the pin so it would fit back
into the hole in the thumbwheel, then it all went back
together correctly.

I hooked power to the panel on the bench, and was able to see
that the fan speed output behaved as expected. The auxiliary
coolant pump output also reacted, as did the monovalve output.
The scope showed a pulse train on the diagnostic output that
seemed to imply that the sensor inputs were screwed up, as
expected. The logic analyzer really wasn't set up to capture
this sort of signal, results with it were inconclusive.
Still, it appears to be alive after the operation. Without
putting it into a car I can't test it any further.

They have lived under the reaction to the reaction to the initial
offenses of the late 50's. We would have unseated the Saudis had they not
been fairly malleable and willing to play as long as we did not mess with
them. The Israelis are akin to the persians. They survived the events of
Hitler, and have become a very reactionary and dangerous society. The bulk
of the population has no personal knowledge of what their grandparents went

what they have done themselves. Iran has the mythos of our meddling, the
rise of the shah, and the reaction that caused the ayatollah to show up.
Thirty years on, they have their parents to tell them stories of how it
was under the shah, or listen to grandma.

In the meanwhile, they are just as greedy for western things as the
chinese. It took them 25 years after Nixon to become a viable threat to
our economy. In the past 18 years, they have destroyed our industrial
base, flooded our markets with garbage and bought up all our debt. We have
 become enslaved to the chinese.

Will it take forty or sixty years before we rise up?

In Heinlein's novel Friday, the title character was a top secret courier.
She got captured early on, when she returned to home base and found it under
enemy control. She sang like a canary, explaining to the readers that it was in
her standing orders from her boss. Said that few could resist torture, and only
God could resist drugs, so what's the point in getting your body messed up in
the process just to save your ego?

In actual wartime, if you really know something that will hurt your side when
it
gets out, it might be important to delay the release of what you know while
your
side works to mitigate the damage after they realize you were captured.

Mitch.

Unit is not visible until the driver side only after under-dash panel is
removed; then ya hafta look up under the dashboard and forward above and
slightly left of brake pedal. Unit is mounted vertically with the long,
narrow sides facing front and aft. Cable plugged into top, short, narrow

Jim Carey can usually rebuild/resolder them. Others on list have also

Easily accessible is a relative term. It's not bad if you are
 young,

agile, and have eagle vision. Being well past 50, not so flexible
anymore, and blind without the correct strength of bifocal or
 cheater
unless I don't have my contacts in (at which point I can only see
 about
six inches), that amp is a pain.

Better than the evaporator I still need to put in the 87 300D though.

You may remember my buying a '98 Jetta last week. At first everything was
happiness and smiles. I got a new battery, fixed some rust, figured out
the sunroof and internal light problems but now a real challenge has

No headlights, daytime running lights, high beams, turn signals,
emergency flashers, wipers, or washers.
Strange no? Common wisdom seemed to indicate that this was the ignition
switch, the electrical part behind the lock. Easy enough to replace
EXCEPT the screw is hidden until you take the lock portion out. I won't
go into details but suffice to say this led me to a junkyard for a new
steering column and lock assembly... Anyway today dodging thunderstorms
(we had some real corkers yesterday) I managed to get everything
installed with the new ignition switch and nothing has changed...

Car starts fine, has power, turbo spools up.

I *think* my fatal error came when I was troubleshooting the blowing of
fuse #21 (sunroof et al) which led me to mess around the fuse box and now
I hope I haven't screwed myself.

Why do I play with old cars?

Some of you may recall my query a year or two ago about what I might do
about too much moisture in my garage.

I did learn that covering the surface of the table saw and jointer out at
the lake with a sheet of tar paper helped a lot.

I did that last fall and this spring, they were better than the previous
year and I think things were as wet this spring as last.

I have a new issue that is sort of the opposite.

The ground around my house is too dry and that is causing some shifting.
Doors are sticking and it is obvious that the south side of the house is
down somewhat - not really visible to the eye or noticable when one walks
accross the floor, but put a level on the floor and it is surprising how
much it is down. We added on to that side of the house in 1987. The
original basement is still reasonably level but the addition has sagged
somewhat on the outer edge away from the basement. The basement has
footings and a poured concrete wall. The addition is built on piles and a
gradebeam. There are a number of bell piles and a couple of straight piles
as there were a couple of spots where there was water coming in when they
drilled and they were not able to bell the bottom.

Here in the Red River Valley we have lots of good old clay gumbo.
It swells when wet and shrinks when dry. It has been dry.

I have been wondering how I might introduce more water down near the level
of the footings to see if that might help to move the house back into
level or at the very least, prevent it from getting any worse.

I can live with it the way it is if I have to but I would not want it to
get much worse. That would pose issues that would be more visible.

I see tree root feeders but I don't know if they are long enough to go
that deep.
I also wonder about creating cavities if one pumps water in under
pressure.

Anyone have experience in this sort of thing or good ideas?

I also wonder about a sort of reverse French drain.
Could I drill some fence post holes deep, fill them with a pipe liner and
stone and just pour water on them from above? Or do you think I would need
pressure to make the water go down the hole?

Re: [MBZ] OT watering deep

2013-09-13 Thread Rich Thomas
In Houston the soil is gumbo, and I used to hear everyone talk about
watering their foundations but never knew anyone who did it. But since
gumbo is fairly water-resistant you need something very slow to get
water into it if indeed you want to water your foundation. The best
thing would be that soaker hose that is porous and water just sorta
slowly oozes out of it. Put a timer on the faucet so you can set how
much and when.

Also have a big maple tree about there that no doubt consumes a fair

Don't want to cut the trees out so need to find a way to water more
effectively.
