Re: [MBZ] You're welcome!

2014-02-19 Thread clay
I think all desk bound bureaucrats are over paid and under intelligent.

While waiting for my kid to get out of school last week I was witness to a
Prius on VW accident. Been on the school principal to remind parents to be
more attentive when picking up or dropping off. Bunch of bubble head dames
with latte and mobile phones and no attention left for driving. Just remind
these wastoids to be in the moment.

Anyway, VW slowly enters intersection after checking. School bus is barreling
south bound on a residential street toward intersection. VW was west bound. I
am bracing for a disaster in my parked car facing south when Prius blast by
heading north. T bones poor nanny in the VW. I share my data with all parties
and cops, make sure the nanny is ok and somebody will get the kids for her,
that her parents are alerted, AAA called and cops are on the way.

I got a call the next day from her insurer, who asked if they could take my
statement. I gladly complied, and it was all recorded. Good deed done.

Today, I get a call from the insurer of the punk kid in the prius, who was on
the phone when he crashed at 30mph. Dumb broad on the line begins questioning
me about how I could tell how fast he was going or even see the dope in the
prius if I was looking in my rear view mirror at the impending bus on VW
accident. The bus never hit, I was at an angle in which it appeared to be
coming faster than it was related to the VW. I try to explain that I was
facing the offending car as it approached, it passed right beside me, not five
feet away, and impacted not a half second after it passed, 20 feet later. My
view was in no way obstructed by the minuscule rear view mirror and there was a
whole windscreen in front of me, which provided excellent vistas. Even with my
attention upon the drama behind me, I was fully able to discern oncoming
traffic from a parked car.

Dumb insurance troglodyte could not get her calcified mind around reality. So
I hung up on her

I felt the W115 in basic trim were the epitome of practicality. Very simple to
resolve issues, no need to head scratch and chase electronic gremlins. As long
as you could find vegi oil and had a hills to push start, you could get most
anywhere. Carry a sturdy lantern for night driving, lashed to the little child
you lashed to the front of the car.

I fully appreciate that line of thinking.

After three red vehicles meeting the crusher for being invisible to other

Are you not able to transplant the wing windows to the newer car?
Do you need a collar to swap the older wheel in place of the puffy?
Not much you can do with bumpers.

Not sure exactly what would be involved with transplants. I have
two good wingy doors, with mirrors on both of 'em, and the steering
column and bumpers could move from the 'heap. I'm hoping to get
a quote on an engine swap, I just don't feel like trying to do
that.

generic cut rate price for engine swap is $500. I'd guess $1500 to
swap the whole drive train with auto to manual conversion. Parts
extra.

Ins co is obligated to make you whole. The argument is what is
"whole" I do think you can get more than 1700 out of them.

And it is pretty comfortable too for an old vehicle.

I had, for a long time, a 1968 Chevy C10 pickup truck.
No power steering or brakes.
No radio.
No power windows or locks.
292 inline 6.
The only "modern comfort" was an AT and it was a powerglide.

It was very basic and I kept it for something like 24 years.
It was a backup vehicle when I needed to work on a daily driver and it
was there to haul stuff when I was not driving a truck as a daily driver.

But it was a bit of a bear to drive in the city without power steering.
It was noisy on the highway at speed. No aerodynamics I guess.
The seating position was not optimal. The cabs on the older trucks are
not as big as the newer ones.
I replaced the seat with one from a newer truck as the original had
broken springs and upholstery that was destroyed when I got the truck.
It was 17 years old when I bought it in the spring of 1985. The seat was
maybe a bit deeper as it left no room for adjustment. I am only 5'8" so
it worked for me but when my 6'3" son wanted to drive it, I did not
think it safe for him as his knees were on either side of the wheel.

And, did I mention the fuel economy or lack thereof?

I only drove it about 13K miles in 24 years so it was ok and I still
miss it somewhat but it was not nearly as nice to drive as the old MB is.

The one thing that I miss with the MB is the remote locking. I may try
to install something (a previous posting on this issue was only a week
or two back if I recall) as I dislike having to use the key in the door
lock everytime.

wiring setup under the hood with fuses in a number of different spots

Only one fuse block in mine, except for the one I added for
the auxiliary lights.

I don't think a car gets more basic than mine. Manual everything.
Crank windows, manual locks. Its fanciest features are the light
in the glove box, and the intermittent wipers. Fuel gauge is electric,
but all other instruments are mechanical. (I did swap in a quartz
clock.) No AC. Heater fan works.

I like it, the visibility and simplicity are great.

I don't know about that statement.
I sort of think that if it was much more basic than it is, my 76 115
would have a crank out front to start the engine.
Despite the fact that it has things like power windows, it is pretty
archaic.
For example, the wiring setup under the hood with fuses in a number of
different spots strikes me as "old".
They added a few things on the 115 over the years but do not appear to
have revised much prior to tossing it in favour of the 123.

But bear in mind that you have survived all of your accidents with red cars.

A fellow who used to teach my younger son saxaphone, had been in 2 bad
accidents while driving Ford SUV's.

He swore he would never drive another and bought a Nissan Pathfinder.

I suggested to him that he might wish to remember that in both cases, he
had survived relatively unscathed.
In both cases the vehicles were totally destroyed and he was fortunate
to get out alive.

He had not thought of it that way. He just assumed the Fords were bad luck.

Except during snow storms.

Don't know what you folks have, but we don't have as many red firetrucks
anymore.

Many are a yellowy green color.

Re: [MBZ] OT: neighborhood

The daughter of some folks we know and her boyfriend drowned in a
snowmobile accident in the Whiteshell Park, years ago - around 1985, I
think. They found his body in the spring but did not find her body for
years. That part made it worse for her poor parents. They were out at
night on Valentine's Day and probably got a bit lost. It is thought that
they were likely one bay over from where they intended to be and ran
into open water. Can you imagine what that must have been like?

I suppose you wouldn't let me snowmobile down the street either...

The big advantage of a redneck town. Sunday I was out snowmobiling for 5 hours.
Took off right from the house, down our dead end street about 100 yards, turn
right, about 200 yards down Mill street, turn left, 100 yards down Murdock
street until it becomes a long driveway for a furniture factory, another 300
yards or so to the real trails. We rode all over...

One very scary place we accidentally crossed open water. Well it wasn't open
water for the FIRST guy. He broke the ice, his girlfriend went to the right and
caught mostly solid ice. The third guy hit completely open water in the center,
next guy went right and caught ice under his right ski and water under the
left. I went left, ice under the left ski and water under the right. It all
happened so fast there was no time to avoid it without making things worse. See
the water, hit the throttle and SKIP and we were across. Only maybe 15' of
water... On the way back we hugged the shoreline until we could find somewhere
with significant ice to cross. Fortunately I didn't have to change my shorts,
couldn't stand up right away though, my butt was gripping the seat.

Are you not able to transplant the wing windows to the newer car? Do
you need a collar to swap the older wheel in place of the puffy? Not
much you can do with bumpers.

Not sure exactly what would be involved with transplants. I have
two good wingy doors, with mirrors on both of 'em, and the steering
column and bumpers could move from the 'heap. I'm hoping to get
a quote on an engine swap, I just don't feel like trying to do
that.
