I had a rusted up M180 that would not turn with a big wrench on the
crank. Took out the plugs and sprayed a half can of the magic mopar
rust eater into each cyl. Next morning it spun like a top. So free
it was scary.

If you do that, you have to be careful to get all the mopar stuff

Modern diesels have a different set of benefits than the older stuff. They
aren't anywhere near as simple. They won't run without electricity or
survive an EMP. You can't fix them with golf tees or pour cooking oil in
the tank as a party trick. They aren't drop dead reliable compared to their
contemporaries, as compared to, say, a W123 vs something with D-jet and a
distributor. They will not serve as taxis in Senegal thirty years from now.

The new stuff is all about efficiency, range, and torque. Torque is proof
that God loves us and wants us to be happy. I also appreciate the unique
technical aspects compared to every other silver E class out there. It is
still less expensive to operate than a gas E320 and I really like the car
so I'm not complaining, but the advantage is smaller than it was a few
months ago.

Yeah but they have those goofy brakes and besides, I couldn't find any that
didn't have a zillion miles and spotty service history. The Bluetec only
had 36k miles on it, and all records from the dealer.

The V6 is more complicated but doesn't seem to be less reliable.

Is fuel price the only reason you choose to drive a diesel?

For me it's not. I choose diesel engines for a lot of other
reasons, so now that gasoline is cheap (for a while) I loose one of
the lesser benefits.

Yes.

That said, the 4-matic cars don't have that issue, and I would think a non rust
belt car would not have that issue. If I were to put a liberal coating of Fluid
Film on rust prone areas every autumn, the car should last until it is pretty

what to look for and can immediately disqualify a car.

Re: [MBZ] hurry before it's gone!

2015-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Hard telling without investigating. Unless there's a picture window in the
side of the block, who knows what its problem is?

If I came upon a car like this and knew nothing about it, I would first try
barring it over to see if it would even turn. After that (if it didn't turn) I
would run a borescope into the spark plug holes to see if there is anything
obvious.

The M130s were notorious for having the metal in the margins between the
cylinder pairs erode on the head side. The resulting leak into the water
jacket would allow coolant directly into the cylinder(s). In most cases this
would be a long, gradual process, and you would see the symptoms well in
advance of anything catastrophic occurring. If not, I guess you could
hydrolock one or more cylinders and bend a rod. Never saw it happen, but I
imagine it could.

Re: [MBZ] W123 vs W140 (was: Re: W123 Crack o the day)

2015-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Based on what I know about them, it sounds like a W210 would be your best bet.
I'm told by current owners that they are good on gas and pretty rugged. Not a
lot of electronics and fairly simple to work on.

You might want to wander through the W210 forum over at Benzworld and see what
people are saying. They may have an FAQ on what to look for when you're buying
one, too. Most of the sections have stickies like this.

While I'm sure a W124 could serve the need, finding one that's been properly
cared for and doesn't have a boatload of miles on it at his point is going to
be tough. Not to mention the W210s are plentiful enough that you could
probably get a good one for less than the top end W124.

Like the CarTalk guys always said, the newer it is, the safer it's going to be,
too.

Re: [MBZ] W123 vs W140 (was: Re: W123 Crack o the day)

2015-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I can't speak for the W140 diesels, but for the gassers there is no shortage of
parts. Some things, like the self-destructing wiring harnesses if you're
unlucky enough to have a car that still has one, are in the aftermarket but
getting harder to find as demand has dropped off. A lot of the guys on the
Benzworld W140 forum aggressively part cars out, so there's a good supply of
used parts floating around, too.

BTW, I had to top off the S500's AC today. The youngest said it wasn't making
cool well. There's evidence of dye from the compressor seal, so I suspect
that's the (new) weak point. Meh. If I have to put a can of refrigerant in it
occasionally I'm still ahead compared to having to replace the evaporator.

agreed; much as i love our W123, i'm getting tired of stupid little

good running trim for so long; that seems to quickly becoming no longer

we need a car that we can use, not something that's a hobby to keep

we'd thought about acquiring a W126 diesel next, but are having to
rethink it likelihood of being able to maintain one of those, too.

are parts becoming unobtanium for the W140 diesels as with the W123s?

I would rather have a nice W126, too. Gasser or diesel. That's not to say

W140s have spoiled me. I want a land yacht sedan. W126 or W140, either way,
something that makes me feel like I'm sitting on the sofa in my living room

i'd be replacing the return lines now for sure; if you got any of that

pop off making an extra-special mess of the hood liner and everything

i still didn't see howl old the return lines are; those things

return lines all with known new good lines; it's the

to eliminate them as a possibility of the cause of the leak.

I've seen compression leaks when the nozzle seal/heat

Nozzle holders, the they
may not have been assembled correctly and could be

Re: [MBZ] OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS - TOM NELMS FARM, PART I

2015-01-03 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You should also remember that many of the self-exiles from Cuba had
strong ties to United Fruit and the previous US puppet dictator, who
imprisoned more people than Castro. Their main complaint seems to be
that they were going to be forced to live like everyone else and not
as aristocrats. Lots of ties with the Mob, too, as the Mob pretty
much ran all the illegal activities in Havana that the previous
dictators were happy to be paid off to overlook -- drug running,
cigarette running, prostitution, and gambling were the worse offenses,
but there were others. Cubans were just cogs in the wheel of United
Fruit's sugar operations unless they owned the plantations or were
rich. Remember that Spain ran Cuba as an absolute monarchy until
1900. Most of the feudal system was still around in the 50's.

I firmly believe that had the US NOT isolated Cuba and allowed full
tourist travel that the Communist system there would have failed very
shortly under the crush of US dollars. Besides, Castro hasn't left
Cuba yet with the national treasury in gold bars on a PanAm airplane
yet, unlike the previous three dictators.

No one should have paid the slightest attention to the Cuban
"refugees" -- if they had actually believed in democracy they would
have set one up at home instead of sucking up to dictators. No
dictators, no Cuban "revolution", no communist state. After all,
Castro was hardly the first to overthrow the government, he's just the
only one that didn't act as Untied Fruit (now General Mills) enforcer,
then leave with all the ready cash when it got too hot.

You can thank the Dulles brothers for the mess, they created it to
make United Fruit (since they were majority owners) the effective
owners of South and Central America for 60 years.

Which is all well and good, until all the Cuban exiles think the whole

I mean, emotions aside, why should we have an embargo upon Cuba and
not Vietnam?

Tonight we (SWMBO, little SWMBO and I) dined Cuban. By chance we shared a

allowed to leave with the clothes they wore, one piece of jewelery and five
dollars each. Everything else they owned (house, car, business) was stolen
by the commies. He told us a little about it, and how Castro established
his police state and crushed dissent.

I thanked him for sharing, and told him I really valued first-hand accounts
of important events (like this and Wilton's writings), and encouraged him
to share more.

I'm not to sure our daughter (aged 8) picked up much, was very late for her
and "boring" adult talk, but often she surprises me with how much she
retains and understands.
