Re: [MBZ] OT Weak cell signals
Skimp on device or on installation? Apparently the fcc only allows 70dB amplification now. They used to allow 75. So I got the most allowable. We have -75bB signal at one end of the house so if I can pick that up it should be enough. As for the inside antenna, I'm not sure how one would skimp on that. My thought was put it on the ceiling somewhere in the middle of the house. Re: [MBZ] OK Don's Geothermal Setup [was: Re: Burnin' daylight]
As I said in the original thread: Ours is a closed loop system from Climate Masters (located in OK). There are two bore holes, each is 300'. The install took two days for the loop, and three days for the unit, but you have to factor in that we moved the location of the unit to another room, installed the new hot water heater where the old furnace was, and had to install all new ductwork in the attic. I'm hoping that we'll get 20-30 years out of this system. We are expecting at this time anyway, to spend the rest of our lives here, so the up front investment made sense to us. I think that the only time we've had the auxiliary heat strips (electric) come on was when we were below 10F. Yes, we'd do it again - my wife loves it! [MBZ] Clutch master cylinder update
An update to the saga. A month ago I purchased a replacement clutch master cylinder from MercedesSource. The website did NOT list the manufacturer - but it came with both a short and a long rod. It came in a TRW box, and "Lucas" was cast into the body. I was not pleased. After installing the master cylinder using the short rod, I determined by how it mounted and by the fact the system wouldn't bleed that the rod was too long. That is, the short rod was not short enough. Closer examination determined the problem is really the top of the piston in the cylinder is too high. Rather than have the car out of service for many days as I tried to find a proper part, I chose to modify the rod making it short enough it would work. I was successful - but it took me an extra 4+ hours of effort. At this point, I was _very_ unhappy with MercedesSource. I let them know how unhappy I was, saying things like "I'll buy from Autohaus before I'll buy from you again". And they responded! Stood behind their product, apologized for the trouble, promised to pester their supplier - and gave me enough monetary compensation that I'm now quite satisfied. MercedesSource is now very high on my list. Any company willing to put money behind the promise to keep customers happy says to me they _are_ serious and really do care about their products and reputation. I'll still be very cautious about the manufacturer, though. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. An LED lamp can be added to the solatube so that light is to be had during the night. The tubes provided ample daylight to dark areas of the house. Not sure of the payback schedule v. electric, but bathrooms and hallways no longer need to burn electrons for 12 hours a day, all year long. It also works ok for night use if there is ambient light outside. I have one in my outhouse, mom has one in her bathroom. It is not dazzling light. It is full spectrum and good enough at night to keep you from piddling on the floor without turning on the lights and destroying night vision. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately & well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers On Jan 20, 2015, at 11:27 AM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: > Would a nice new LED light fixture not solve the problem with a lot less fuss? > > RB > > > On 20/01/2015 1:03 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: >> I have wanted to do this for a long time, and in other homes as well, but >> never got around to it. >> >> Our current home has very little in the way of outside light coming in to >> the main living area, primarily due to the back of the house being "U" >> shaped with a roof over the center of the "U". Re: [MBZ] Burnin' daylight
Hey Don, Could you tell us more about your geothermal setup? Is it a closed loop system? How big was the hole(s) (horizontal or vertical tubes)? How long did the install take? What is your climate? What longevity do you expect from the system? Would you do it again? There is a lot of information on these systems but most of it comes from suppliers, not users. I have air-source heat pumps but supplement on cold nights with a propane direct-vent fireplace. Propane prices just peaked here at $3.70 (so of course they came and topped up my 500 gal tank!) but price is significantly lower now. I like the ground-source idea but not sure I'll live here long enough for it to pay off. Thanks. Are you looking to rebroadcast the signal indoors, or do you just want a cradle to put a phone in? The latter can often be done without an amplifier, just an outdoor antenna like a Wilson Trucker and a 10' cable run to the cradle. [MBZ] OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS - RAISING TOBACCO, PART I
Yep, another one already. RAISING TOBACCO By Wilton Strickland The main "money" crop in our area of Eastern North Carolina was "bright leaf" or "flue-cured" tobacco. Some income was also derived from raising cotton and wheat. Corn, rye, oats, barley, though usually raised mainly to feed the livestock (draft horses or mules, hogs, cows, chickens), some income could be realized by selling the excess. Raising tobacco the way my family did it, basically the way it had been done for 300 years, was nearly a year-round job and was very labor intensive and, seemingly, never-ending. Until tractors and other machinery began to make significant inroads into the system in the late 1950's and early '60's, almost everything was done by manual labor or, at best, with the help of horses or mules to pull certain implements or pieces of machinery. Even with the help of these animals, the farmer had to do an extraordinary amount of walking. The farmer had to start very early in the year preparing a plant bed, usually on "new ground," to produce plants to be transplanted into the fields. During the winter, the farmer would clear trees and stumps from a small place in the woods to plant tobacco seeds. A plot in the woods was usually chosen for its fertility, protection from harsh weather, freezing, etc., and likely lack of diseases from previous crops that could be transferred to the new plants. After removing trees, stumps and roots from the "plant bed," it would be plowed or disked by horse or mule-drawn machinery for the seeds. After this final preparation, the farmer would sow, or "broadcast," the seeds, often by hand and mixed with sand or fertilizer to aid handling. Then, the farmer would cover the bed with a thin, cotton canvass or gauze-like cover about six inches above ground and held in place around the perimeter by logs and supported above the plants by reeds or sapling sticks bent into arcs. Several weeks later, in early spring, all members of the family would return to the plant bed, roll the canvass cover back and, getting down on hands and knees, pick the weeds out of the bed to allow the tobacco plants to grow. This had to be done more than once until the plants got big enough to be pulled and transplanted into the fields. Mama several times got bad cases of poison oak or poison ivy while picking the weeds out of plant beds. Also, during the winter, the farmer spent a lot of time in the woods cutting wood to be used in the summer to cure or dry the tobacco. Daddy and my brothers used a long, two-man crosscut saw and an ax to fell trees and cut them to length for hauling and burning in the brick, barn furnaces. To lubricate the saw and keep it from "gumming up" with wood sap, it was occasionally doused and brushed with kerosene kept in a Pepsi bottle with a green bunch of pine straw stuck in the top to serve as a stopper and brush. After the wood dried for a few weeks, they hauled it to the barns on a horse or mule-drawn wagon. All of this, too, was exhausting, manual labor. Meanwhile, the farmer would be preparing the fields to receive the little plants. This preparation started in early spring by first turning (breaking up) the soil with a "turning plow," a horse or mule-drawn plow with a "wing" on the right hand side that would cause the soil to be turned up-side-down as the plow moved through it. One horse or mule usually pulled this plow, but sometimes a farmer would use a bigger, heavier plow that required two horses or mules. Like almost all of the plowing on our farm, this required the plower to walk in the furrow behind the plow in loose soil many miles to prepare each field one 6 to 8-inch-wide furrow at a time. Several days after the initial preparation (turning), the farmer would go back in the field to "run rows." This was done with a smaller plow with a V-shaped point with short wings on each side to leave a symmetrical furrow about eight inches wide and about three inches deep and about 2 ½ feet apart. Then, the farmer used a mule-drawn, walk-behind fertilizer distributor to put fertilizer in each row. Then, the farmer used a turning plow again, at least two passes on each row - one in each direction, to form a ridged row onto which the plants were set. During the same time of year the farmer was preparing and setting tobacco in the fields, he also prepared and planted his other crops, most of this time walking behind a plow, fertilizer distributor or planter/seeder. In mid-spring the tobacco plants were pulled by hand from their beds and transplanted (set out) in the fields. Sometimes, the farmer would use a horse or mule-drawn transplanter, a wheeled machine with a driver sitting atop a barrel-like container of water and places down low on the back to accommodate two "setters," who dropped the small plants one by one into a hopper. As the machine moved along, it opened a slot in the pre

After the refill, his furnace went on lockout, and he had to pay a tech to clean his burners. Furnace had a pre-season service, tech told him that running out of LP was the cause of the problem. I couldn't believe he let it happen. He was really worried about the short fill, but apparently didn't keep close track of the propane level. I would have been burning up the phone lines after it hit 20%. He paid in advance for a year's propane in the middle of the summer, with a 'keep full' contract, and they did that to him when propane got expensive. My parents have the same contract with another provider which tries to keep them above 50% because of their backup generator. Their tank was kept full through last year's shortage. I'm already in the classroom although the class is slow to arrive. Its been a slow class, we ran to 7:30 last night which is the latest I've ever gone... Jetta radiator seems to be holding up, I guess my new brackets hold it in place well enough. I still plan to check them this weekend. Got the gasket set for the snowmobile engine, got it all cleaned, need to lug it back out to the garage and use the impact gun to get the flywheel nut off. I've started painting the tinwork but its deeply pitted and needs the primer sanded out and a couple more coats. You can't take off the tinwork while the engine is installed and can't pull the engine without pulling the clutch so I figure I better do it now.
