Not to be insulting, but of what concern should it be to anyone,
especially those who are not Americans, how I spend my US dollars? Gas,
booze, women (OK just my wife and daughter), food, toys, or whatever the

other nationality thinks of my spending or living habits. Other
countries are free to do whatever their citizens let them do (which
mostly seems to be to tax the hell out of things that are necessary or
pleasurable), and if the USA offers vehicles and gas at whatever prices,
I will make my choices accordingly. If the representatives of the
people choose to do things that are not to our collective (or at least a
majority of voters and the courts) desire then we will deal with that.

Now, if those external individuals and countries decide to do things
that are not in our interest, then we need to figure out what to do
about that and act accordingly. In our locality, and I think that of
our northern neighbors, the markets are awash in oil and gas, and from
what I can learn, that can go on for quite some time (decades) before
there is a shortage driving prices to $150. Once again, technology and

Re: [MBZ] car hacking

2015-08-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm just saying that if the entertainment center is a full member of the CAN
bus it will always be an entry point for hackers. As long as theres an entry
point there will always be hacks. Any network open to the internet will be
hacked at some point, this has already been pretty well proven.
The entertainment center knows when the car is on because it has power. It can
know where it is because of its own GPS or the GPS in your phone and it can
have its own buttons and spot in the cluster on a bus other than the one
responsible for the rest of the car. This is an issue of basic safety.
If you look at fire alarm systems NO PART of a commercial fire alarm may touch
ANY other system in the building (or at least that was true when I stopped
being a Fire Alarm Videographer in 2001. It was a basic safety precaution...

Curt, how do you expect the entertainment system to known when the car is
on, where it is, display messages in the instrument cluster, and respond to
button presses if it's not connected to a CAN bus?

Let's not loose focus on where the issues were here... No need to attack
basic and proven technologies.

I did that, but it didn't help.

As Tim alluded, the program gives you the impression that when you tell
it to do something, it goes out and does it. I was expecting Windows
Update in Windows 7 to work as it did in XP (I know, not a safe assumption
with Microsoft).

Windows Update had already determined a whole long list of updates it
needed to install. I selected those and told it to install. The window
changed to say it was downloading packages with 0 bytes and 0%
downloaded. It sat there quite a long time and then the processor
utilization went to 100%, with nothing ever being downloaded. I even
checked the RJ-45 receptacle's light -- it was not blinking. In contrast,
Windows Update in XP would indeed start downloading the packages when it
said it was downloading them. So you can see why I was thinking something
was broken.

It has now developed a new problem: For the last hour-and-a-half at least,
it has been stuck on Installing update 150 of 179... That update is
KB2799926, in case that means anything.

Does anyone have any ideas what to do now?

Thank you for your assistance,

3.5L is the M116 cousin of the more common M117 in America. Very
few were sold here, mostly prior to 1973 due to emissions problems.

Basically a stroker version of the M117 (or the M117 is the long
stroke low compression version of the M116).

Same hp and torque with a liter less displacement, higher rev limit
(6200 rpm vs 5800).

And that history has repeated with the current administration. Except this
time we surrendered after we won. We left the vacuum that spawned ISIS. We
set up the Middle East for a nuclear arms race. At the same time we created
a domestic welfare state with almost half the people living off the rest and
exploding the National debt. That's not politics, its facts.

I'll refine my inner Trump and try not to bend any ones feelings.
In case I do, I have plenty of internet butt hurt forms so don't worry.

I'm kidding of course. And Mao.. Carter was President when the current
muslim republic of Iran was formed by the then exiled ayatollah Khomeini,
by
driving the Shah out of power, who was a friend of America and we did a
lot of
trade with Iran, under his rule.
During his rule, I spent 2 yrs in Iran on a government contract, so I got
to know
the country pretty well. It was known then as a center of high fashion and
culture. The Persian women are among the most beautiful in the world,
[something I remember, being a young man at that time], who dressed in
stunning ways in the latest European fashion.. not in hijab and burka like
now.

The Ayatollah and his muslim minions took over the country, seized the
United States Embassy and held all the occupants hostage for a very long
time.
Mr Carter was not effective in recovering them, or setting the hostage
takers
straight. An Embassy is Sovereign Soil, so seizing it is an act of war, by
all
known rules.. yet nothing was done that made any difference and America
was
made to appear a weak country, which set the stage for the current
circumstances. The steps going forward would make a history thesis so I
will
hold back on those, they are easily found as a matter of record. Terrorist
demands were made and not dealt with by the office of President in a way
that marked Mr. Carter forever as weak as a leader.

Mr. Regan was elected to replace him and announced his plan to recover
the
hostages who had grown nearly gray while waiting to be rescued, and they
were released within only a few days of him taking office...which further
empathized how non preforming Mr. Carter had been.

In the interest of list purity I submit this only to give closure to my
earlier
comment.. so everyone stand at ease.. nothing further on the subject.

I understand Mr. Carter is given very little chance of survival at this
point. We
have a remarkable number of former presidents still living. More than ever
in
 history.

On the Mercedes side, I just located TWO complete sets of 15 slot 15 inch
rims,
while looking for a set for my new CD which is coming into restoration.
So I
now have 10 each 15 slot, 15 inch rims.. and a bunch of Bundts [so many
I've
lost count]...17 I think Wheels anyone?

As long as the the tin worm does not eat your 91, it still has lots
of life in it. Most merkun cars of that vintage can go to 300k with
oil changes. I've had two OM603s with over 400k on them and they
both still run/ran strong.

I did a compression test on the first one at 300k because I was
getting a little nervous. 425 PSI in each cylinder. (factory new
engine spec.)

I say your current car is better than the 2004. (nothing against the
2004, but it is a gasser)

2015-08-25 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Not to be insulting, but of what concern should it be to anyone,
especially those who are not Americans, how I spend my US dollars?
Gas, booze, women (OK just my wife and daughter), food, toys, or
whatever the hell else I want to spend it on? I really could not
care less what any other nationality thinks of my spending or living
habits. Other countries are free to do whatever their citizens let
them do (which mostly seems to be to tax the hell out of things that
are necessary or pleasurable), and if the USA offers vehicles and
gas at whatever prices, I will make my choices accordingly. If the
representatives of the people choose to do things that are not to
our collective (or at least a majority of voters and the courts)
desire then we will deal with that.

Now, if those external individuals and countries decide to do things
that are not in our interest, then we need to figure out what to
do about that and act accordingly. In our locality, and I think
that of our northern neighbors, the markets are awash in oil and
gas, and from what I can learn, that can go on for quite some time
(decades) before there is a shortage driving prices to $150. Once
again, technology and some smart people have changed the world, and
new ways of thinking need to deal with that. If I was a Saudi or a
Russian I would be very concerned these days.

The Task Manager says that the CPU is being 100% utilized and that
svchost.exe is the process that is doing the hogging.

There are a number of viruses that grab svchost and then go crazy. There
are also several legitimate Windows services that occasionally go nuts as
well, the latter are usually self-healing when they finish or hit the
timeout. At a guess it was doing a drive scan or something, stimulated by
the reboot.

Windows Update is very sensitive to network connections and other services
queuing up behind it. The on-demand buttons seem to just be an illusion, I
think it just queries state stored from the last connection. Anyway I
often have to stop and start the Windows Update service or the BITS service
to get it going.

If you don't have all the service packs, downloading those on another
system and installing them directly might ease some of the pain.

Who is being reminded why he dislikes Windows.

This is nothing, just wait until you corrupt the registry! (Though to be
fair, my w7 systems have been exceptionally stable, at least once they got
setup and updated initially.)

Just speaking for myself.. while I am very sorry Mr. Carter is now dying of
cancer, and I would not wish that fate upon anyone..

Death, however, does not absolve him of his acts while living, which I have
found reprehensible. I have resolutely found his actions while President
the root cause of much of the current stress we now see in mid east with
Iran and his treatment of our ally Israel was never acceptable.

While I give him as much respect as possible for a human.. I still hold him
accountable, both living and after death for what he did and how he acted..

With respect to you personally.. others have strongly held opinions which
have meaning to them... it is their choice to voice them.. it is my choice
to listen.

Kind regards,
Grant...

Does anyone have any ideas what to do now?

Well, after more than 5 hours of it trying to install the update, I
clicked on the Stop installation button. A little while later, a
message popped up mentioning installation progress, so I clicked on it.
That brought up Windows Update, showing it was installing update 150 of
179. Clicking on the Stop installation button again did nothing.

I tried to restart the computer, but it said it had to finish installing
the updates and to not shut it off. After a while, I held the power
button down until the screen went back. I rebooted it and took the option
of starting in Safe Mode. Now it says,

Failure configuring Windows updates
 Reverting changes
Do not turn off your computer

Ugh.

I did some research on-line about the problem and found
MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run.exe
and
Update.Readiness.Tool.Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu
Maybe they will help.

I did find a download of Win7 SP1, but that's 1.9 GB, so I didn't
download it. That's still an option for tonight. I also found
winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe so I won't have to make a CD
with SP1 on it.

The idea of someone telling me how and what I can spend my money on, or
asserting that such decisions are anyone else's concern, or implying
that my decisions are less than acceptable. If Americans want a big
thirsty vehicle (or continue to drive one because I don't want to spend
huge money to save a few mpg) and the market offers them (here
recognizing the gummint's meddling in fuel efficiency), and Americans
have the money to buy and put fuel in them, then that is our option to
choose. Or a small sippy vehicle, or an electric or hybrid or bicycle
or whatever else. Because, MERKA!

Interestingly enough, aside from various weenies in the world, that is
what most others would choose too (i.e., to have the choice of what to
buy, including big thirsty vehicles), if they had the choice.

I'll refine my inner Trump and try not to bend any ones feelings.
In case I do, I have plenty of internet butt hurt forms so don't worry.

I'm kidding of course. And Mao.. Carter was President when the current
muslim republic of Iran was formed by the then exiled ayatollah Khomeini,
by driving the Shah out of power, who was a friend of America and we did a
lot of trade with Iran, under his rule.
During his rule, I spent 2 yrs in Iran on a government contract, so I got
to know the country pretty well. It was known then as a center of high
fashion and culture. The Persian women are among the most beautiful in the
world, [something I remember, being a young man at that time], who dressed
in stunning ways in the latest European fashion.. not in hijab and burka
like now.

The Ayatollah and his muslim minions took over the country, seized the
United States Embassy and held all the occupants hostage for a very long
time. Mr Carter was not effective in recovering them, or setting the
hostage takers straight. An Embassy is Sovereign Soil, so seizing it is an
act of war, by all known rules.. yet nothing was done that made any
difference and America was made to appear a weak country, which set the
stage for the current circumstances. The steps going forward would make a
history thesis so I will hold back on those, they are easily found as a
matter of record. Terrorist demands were made and not dealt with by the
office of President in a way that marked Mr. Carter forever as weak as a
leader.

Mr. Regan was elected to replace him and announced his plan to recover the
hostages who had grown nearly gray while waiting to be rescued, and they
were released within only a few days of him taking office...which further
empathized how non preforming Mr. Carter had been.

In the interest of list purity I submit this only to give closure to my
earlier comment.. so everyone stand at ease.. nothing further on the
subject.

I understand Mr. Carter is given very little chance of survival at this
point. We have a remarkable number of former presidents still living. More
than ever in history.

On the Mercedes side, I just located TWO complete sets of 15 slot 15 inch
rims, while looking for a set for my new CD which is coming into
restoration. So I now have 10 each 15 slot, 15 inch rims.. and a bunch of
Bundts [so many I've lost count]...17 I think Wheels anyone?

Re: [MBZ] Bi-Xenon Retrofit

2015-08-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
What I’m finding is that the xenon projectors are industry standard sizes, so
to convert my S430 low beams to xenon is pretty straightforward.

Open up the headlight assemblies, remove the halogen projectors, install the
xenon projectors, wire the ballasts and button everything up.

From what I am reading the Mercedes stock optics are really crappy compared to
everyone else’s. Audi seems to have the best, then BMW and others. It’s
simple to find a set of projectors on places like eBay for $75. You cna buy
better optics if you want them - just drop the lenses in when you mount the
projectors. Ballasts can be had for $30-$50/each, and there are retrofit
wiring harnesses so the canbus system stays happy.

In the case of my car I’ll have to go into the DAS and tell the car it’s got
xenons, for what reason I’m not sure. Haven’t dug that deeply into it yet.

I’ll post whatever I find out as I go along. This is a heck of a lot easier
and cheaper than retrofitting Euro headlights….

Re: [MBZ] Some progress with Windows Update (but only a little ...)

2015-08-25 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Speaking of computer software -- I have a Parallels window running on my
Mac with a Win7 install, which works fine. Yesterday I downloaded
Ubuntu 15 and have tried to install it, it gets so far, looks like maybe
it installed as a virtual machine OS but then it wants Parallel tools
off the CD, but that doesn't work. I found a tutorial that says to grab
it off the Mac HD, which I found, but then it wants a terminal session
in Ubuntu and it looks like Ubuntu install is hung with 4 dots, and I
can't figure out how to open a terminal.

Yes, Dwight, I would agree. The comment was more appropriate for Banned,

On Tue, Aug 25, 2015 at 5:57 PM, Darren Marshall via Mercedes

Craig, let me know if you want to buy an iMac...

Seems a little drastic.

Let me get out of the way that I am not a Windows guy. At work I have
probably 30-50 Linux VMs outside IT that I've spun for various people,
and I spend less time managing those than the 5-10 long-running
Windows servers I've done. I first installed Redhat 6 when that was
latest (not RHEL 6 :) and have had at least one Linux machine ever
since. That said, the kids are using Windows at school, and so I have
had W7 on all my user machines at home for several years.

I've installed W7 probably 10 times at home (various
laptops/desktops/etc.), mostly on older machines. It's always
performed better than XP on those systems, and for the most part
better than X Windows - at least from a startup/responsiveness
perspective. These are home machines so are powered up and down all
the time. The kids log in, do stuff, and then I wipe the system and
install again after a while (aforementioned 'registry is stupid'
thought). So far it has been pretty painless, but:
 1) I know where the drivers are for all the systems. I usually stick
them on a USB the first time I have to get them, then update those I
can find the next install.
 2) I have figured out the trick for installing with the upgrade
licenses I have. This is totally absurd but it's the game I play for
buying the cheap licenses.
 3) I always install on a fast-ish network, and plan to download all
the updates over the first few days. I'll do one install the first
night, start the second in the morning, the third the next night, and
so on. It's silly when I've been able to apt-get update since
forever, but it works.
 4) I forget to log out / power down at least once a week, so the
machine does its updates overnight on that day.
 5) HP printer drivers are bad. The hacked ones on Linux are so much better.
 6) I once had to call in to proclaim to the lady that I was not using
the license elsewhere after a reinstall, but they've never hassled me
beyond that for redeploying it.

Really I think #3 is the key. Once everything is installed, the
updater does a good job keeping up, but the upgrades don't install
well out of order. I assume they never fixed the requirement to
install updates in waves to account for this, but obviously it doesn't
work. You can emulate this on a slower link by installing he latest
SP and then running updater, but that in itself is a pain. (For Craig,
if he was able to leave the system alone on the internet it would
eventually take care of itself, but it would probably take a few days
and obviously that's not reasonable on dialup.)

So, even though I'm a Linux geek, and tend to deploy them 5x as often
as Windows systems*, I think W7 is a decent OS, and a bit better than
XP on the same hardware. You really don't have to be scared of it.

*Okay, that's hardly fair, we also have a lot of physical servers
outside IT: about 60% Unix, 20% each Linux/Windows, and one poor
little Mac Mini with a load of different OSX VMs. But if we only
count general-computing x86 VMs...

Best,
Tim
