Did that with the first steering wheel I tried to take off. Beat

Went to HF and bought their 2' long 12" breaker bar. That thing

The lamps might be the same, but the illumination isn't.
IIRC, the 123 lamps are large-ish, and many of the others
are small. Some of the small ones are out on stalks near
the face, and rely upon the omnidirectional light pattern
of an incandescent filament in order to throw adequate
light to the gauge faces. Directional LED's in places
like that would work poorly, I would think.

The 123 lamps face light pipes, so a directional lamp,
_if aimed correctly_, would actually be superior there.

Raw lumens isn't enough.

Re: [MBZ] OM606 glow plug renewal

2016-03-12 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Status report.

#1 has broken.

#2 loose, threads out, carbon holding it but should come out.

#3, #4 moving a little bit.

#5 out and replaced. Old plug star-marked Beru.

#6 not attempted yet.

#1 was moving, torque wrench set at 30 Nm. I was moving it slowly back and
forth, getting just a little movement when it let go. Liberal use of
penetrating oil, hot engine.

Monday I will call around to see if any local shop has the special tool set for
drilling out the broken plug.

Bad report! Bad report!

#1 plug appears to be intact. I decided to measure the ohms and see if the
filament was broken, it measured good. I decided to try twisting it a
little to see how badly it was broken, and now it refuses to move again.
Apparently it broke free a bit, and the big movement was misinterpreted by
me as a break.

I've got all the remaining plugs soaking in penetrating oil from both
side. Injectors for #1, #3, #4 and #6 are out and I've filled the
pre-chambers several times each with penetrating oil. Changing the engine
oil will sure be cheaper than paying someone to fix a broken plug, and it
was just about due anyway.

Kaleb,

That's what I'm doing, slowly back and forth, trying to get more out than
in. Three of them started moving and then tightened up!

Letting the remaining four soak while I eat lunch now.

The Beru literature says for a stuck plug, apply 12v for 3 minutes to heat
it up. I tried that on one plug, but that didn't seem to help.

Any other tricks?

[MBZ] Pi day is coming!

Monday, the day after the annual time chaos, is Pi day - and will be the
last time for 100 years that the abbreviated MDY notation will equal Pi to
four decimal points 3.1416. I think we should celebrate this special day by
eating pie at every meal - breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. All forms

Re: [MBZ] LED bulbs

2016-03-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’ll add that one to my list.

Got a security geek conference in Orlando all this coming week, so no time for
tinkering. Despite only being an hour away, I have to room there (which really
isn’t bad, since it’s at Disney) so I won’t be tinkering for a bit.

I’m recovering from a nasty bout of a flu that’s been going around here,
otherwise I would have replaced the power steering return lines today. Both
flexible lines are a bit seepy, so I got a meter of 12mm hydraulic hose to
replace them. Messy job, but a cheap and easy fix. Between feeling moderately
crappy and having to drive to Orlando tonight I didn’t want to risk screwing up
my transportation so I put it off for the future.

Anybody got an email address for King John? I tried the one I got and haven’t
heard back, so I’m assuming it’s no longer valid. I don’t think he’s off on a
junket to India or anything. Figured I would look him up while I was in
Mousetown.

Using a torque limit of 45 Nm, two more are done. Only #3, #5 remain.

#3 is blocked by the aneroid capsule on top of the injection pump. The Hazet

#5 is blocked by the oil filter housing, same location as an OM603 engine. I

Let me see if I have this right: The old 61x iron heads develop many cracks
but they still function OK and the glow plugs come out in one piece. The
new, improved 60x aluminum heads have fewer cracks but those cracks are
fatal and the glow plugs may be terminally stuck. Is that right?

Re: [MBZ] OM606 glow plug renewal

2016-03-12 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
No, the OM606 heads are pretty bullet-proof. Glow plugs are the only weakness.

I've been working on these for about eight hours now. Patience is the key,
combined with knowledge and a gentle touch. None broken, 4 of 6 replaced, last
two are threads out but stuck in the bore. Turn, pull, apply penetrating oil,
repeat until they are worked out of the head. Ream out the carbon, slather new
plug with anti-seize, install.

Next time, the job will be far easier!

Done.

Injectors still out, intake manifold off. I'm going to send the injectors to a
guy to be rebuilt with new nozzles, while I wait for some new parts. Crank
case ventilation rubber bits were too brittle and broke, a few plastic fuel
line clips also broke, so I've got to order some parts.

[MBZ] If you see a screw - DO NOT TOUCH IT!

2016-03-12 Thread clay via Mercedes
We had a club event at a local shop. The owner gave a presentation on fuel
injection and ACC in the current classic cars (1970-1990). Most of the stuff
was about Bosch (when Bosch was good) There are a plethora of items in the
injection system that have screws that tempt owners to do stupid things that
render the cars undrivable. He pointed out the many places that fuel
distributors, electronics and such have screws that get twisted by idiots
thinking they can improve the very overly engineered and incredibly
specifically set parameters that would require a test bench to correct. The
take away was that if you put a tool to these things you may need to pay many
thousands of dollars to put it right.

The ACC was less screw driver prone. Most of the issues are related to limited
longevity and the parts not being available anymore. There is a need for these
orphan products to once more be available and we need to make a concerted and
widespread effort to do interweb searches for the parts by number and such so
that the fabricators take notice of a growing demand.

Somebody can make a very good living if they were to concoct a vacuum pump
rebuild kit for the classic diesels. The kits are NLA and this is sidelining a
great number of cars. There was also mention of Beckman being a very worthy
rebuilder of electronics. The opinion of the presenter was that the
replacement parts were superior to OE parts, and probably more available. The
C series seemed to have had an ignition module that was a massive failure and
the factory went bankrupt, leaving car owners mad and dealers stripping the
parts from floor models to keep the other cars on the road.

Re: [MBZ] OM606 glow plug renewal

2016-03-12 Thread clay via Mercedes
Terminal stuck is a matter of cash and opinion. The GP gets stuck, the head
comes off, the threads are re-tapped, and you can put fresh GPs in. The older
engines did get PG stuck regularly. One of the items of discussion at the club
tech event today. The heads do not need to be removed to clear the GP.
Destruction of the GP is standard. The carbon builds a ring on the end so it
is a coked up plug. AS long as only one GP is messed up, you can run the
engine and put stress upon it so that the plug is blasted out of the head.

People who own classic cars with 14" rims who wants to be able to mount tires
that are larger than current trailer tires and more modern. Try to find a V
rated 14 inch tire to fit a SL. Vredstein or Coker make them, but you pay
anywhere from $250-500 per wheel. A 15 inch tire will be in the $99 range.

[MBZ] Anybody in the Market for an early R107?

2016-03-12 Thread clay via Mercedes
I am helping my indy pass two R107 along. Posted them on CL and getting some
flaky offers. Dudes want to trade stuff the seller just does not want or need.
Boats, bikes, cars, trucks, ATV, no planes yet.

The 1974 is a sweet ride. If I did not already have an SL in good condition I
would seriously have this one in the running. Would have been no question when
I was car shopping. SWMBA may have even gone along, seeing how the car is in
such good condition and fresh from the shop. I am dropping the asking price by
$50 each week until the sellers floor gets hit by Mother's day.
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5478007142.html

The other car has actually had more serious interest. Blue on blue 77 that is
a real project car. It was running but had intermittent smoke issue. For the
buyer with half a clue and willing to do the work, this would be a killer deal.
This would be perfect for Cathey or Poos who could make this look and run far
better than it looks now. Elbow grease would double the value of the car over
a summer of Martha and Microwave metal. As Jim said, he has had the most fun
with his under $2k SL cars.
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5481031183.html

Next week I will be out with a wash bucket and stuff to pretty them up.

PLEASE, somebody make reasonable offers and take these home.
