*It’s no secret

that manufacturing solar panels often requires toxic heavy metals,
explosive gases, and rare-earth elements that come from shoddy mines in
war-torn republics. But here’s a surprise: The solar industry is actually
getting dirtier in some respects. The latest Solar Scorecard
 from the Silicon Valley
Toxics Coalition (SVTC), released last week, reports that the industry has
slipped on several key environmental metrics, with many solar-panel
manufacturers now refusing to provide any information about their
manufacturing practices at all.*

I believe that Marshall used to say that any modern oil, synthetic or
conventional, was a much better oil that what was available when the OM61x
engines were designed. I don't see why that logic would not extend to
Don's BMW, as long as the oil meets the spec that his engine calls for.

Re: [MBZ] big oil dying (again)

2017-06-30 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl I do hope you are correct, and the breakthroughs needed to fulfill the
dream of that article arrive tomorrow. Decades ago I learned the reason
that solar is doomed to a small percentage of our energy production:
physics. Per square meter, the amount of usable energy in sunlight is many
order of magnitudes less than what is needed for modern life. Ten minutes
at a gas pump can provide enough energy to carry my family in comfort and
safety for hundreds and hundreds of miles. Covering my roof with solar
panels will never provide all the energy that my heat pumps require to keep
my house climate comfortable. Perhaps someday we'll have sufficient power
plants (fossil fuel or nuclear) and sufficient distribution to deliver
power for businesses / homes / and transportation where needed, and someone
will invent a capacitor that fits in a car and holds the same amount of
energy as 16 or 18 gallons of fuel that can be fully charged in minutes,
but solar and wind are doomed to providing just a small portion of that.

It really doesn't matter how elegant one part of the solution is (electric
cars are simple and durable) if you can't solve the whole equation.

[MBZ] Inlet Screen for Nippondenso Compressor

2017-06-30 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
In the process of building up the list 'o' parts for my W126 AC rebuild, I
bought a quantity of low pressure inlet screens for the Nippondenso compressors
from these guys:

http://www.airsept.com/Products/Details/32

This prevents any cruft that might still be in the system after a compressor
failure or flush from contaminating the new compressor. I could only get the
Nippondenso screens in a quantity of five, so I now have 3-4 more than I need.

If anyone wants one, I'll sell one for the cost of shipping plus a buck or two,
like maybe $5.00?

Drop me a PM if you want one.

I have heard mixed reviews on adding screens or filters. If a compressor blows
up the system should be properly flushed. Adding a filter or screen sounds good
but it it gets plugged up your compressor might blow up again, correct?

That depends on whether you turn it off when it stops cooling properly, I guess.
Without the filter, if there's enough crap in the system to plug a filter, your
compressor is toast.

Yea I suppose. It does not cool turn it off, pull and clean the screen. If you
do a proper flush it should not be needed though. They say in the parallel flow
condensers those should be replaced in the event of compressor failure due to
not being able to completely flush them.

It's an easy decision matrix, especially if the filter is cheap:

Dirty Screened
-
N N: Good
N Y: Good
Y N: Bad
Y Y: Good

If it was dirty enough to clog the screen, it was dirty enough to destroy
the compressor.
So, turn it off and diagnose, if it's not working, and you should be good.

Literally everything but the evaporator, which will be flushed, is being
replaced in the system. ALL lines, compressor, condenser, expansion valve,

[MBZ] OT. shared a home on Zillow in Nowata

2017-06-30 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So after looking at Kleb's fantasy I am getting lots of emails from
Zillow about Nowata OK. I saw this place, a little dinky house with a
bomb shelter (or maybe tornadoes) and a small barn

 1106 S Hickory St, Nowata, OK 74048

 2 beds1 bath1,002 sqft

For Sale
$19,499
Zestimate^® : $37,386
Est. Mortgage
$75/mo
House has potential, "AS IS" Must be sold with MLS 1724828 Total Acreage
is 3.44 AC/ML Barn and garage. Home is Central Unit duct but no units
available.

This has me thinking that a move to Nowata would be a good economic
choice, notwithstanding it would be a move to Nowata OK. But still, for
that kind of money and acreage? Talk about cheap living, even with some
fix-up or a whole new structure or trailer or something, and it even has
a rickety barn and garage for the projects. And 3.44 acres would hold a
lot of cars!

Yeahbut, although solar and wind will become a portion of the energy stream
they cannot replace conventional power. Can't be done, there just isn't enough
energy. Sure you can power one house but look at an apartment building, one
roof can't power 50 stories of apartments, not enough energy density.
You mention the power company pays you, thats in summer time, what about in
December, theres less light then remember? Plus you're not using a dozen
kilowatts a day driving around. If you bring an electric car into the mix
you'll be buying power again.
Tidal energy shows great promise since its BIG and regular but storage is
always a problem as is transmission.
Solar and wind are part of a sustainable mix and will make our non-renewable
energy sources last much longer but they aren't the whole answer.
OTOH people who think "Drill baby drill" will solve all our problems are also
deluding themselves. As with most things the answer is in the middle. There is
no silver bullet.

Re: [MBZ] uh oh Oil Thread

2017-06-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Luckily on this car (the 99 740iL with 105K miles), it doesn't use or leak any
oil. Since I have been driving so much lately I pushed it a little longer than
I normally do. I had driven almost 10,000 miles on the Mobil 1 and it never
needed a top up. My other one with 234K miles has only needed a half quart in
7,000 miles. And that was only once or twice.

My wife's Cadillac SUV is a completely different story. It will need 1.5
quarts in 3,000 miles. It takes 6 qts for an oil change. AND it has 130K
miles on the 3.6 engine that most owners report will use 1-2 qts in 4-5,000
miles.

Re: [MBZ] big oil dying (again)

2017-06-30 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I am reminded of an interesting situation that occurred in TX 7 or 8
years ago in NY Day I think it was. TX has an independent electric
grid, I think there are only 1 or 2 connections outside the state. TX
also has a large installed wind generation capacity in West Texas that
contributes a lot, the wind out there blows well. Except that day it
just stopped. No wind. The whole generation capacity dropped off-line,
which caused considerable problems in the grid. It was good it happened
on that holiday as the demand was relatively low, but it showed the
problems with reliance on that particular mode.

I think it is reasonable that all generation modes be considered as long
as all the costs (and subsidies) are properly accounted, which for me
means that none of the modes should have one penny of subsidy, tax
breaks, or anything else, and externalities should be properly accounted
for. That way reasonable decisions can be made as to what is best,
recognizing that things can change over time.

And politicians and lobbyists are not looking out for OUR interests...

Re: [MBZ] uh oh Oil Thread

2017-06-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Makes sense to me. I think this is especially true if one is not trying to
stretch the oil change interval too long. When I worked at the Oldsmobile and
Honda dealership, a lot of GM customers would ask about synthetic oils or long
life oils. That particular dealership charged $9.72 for oil changes with bulk
Pennzoil 10W30. If the customer was changing it every 3,000 miles or so, I was
of the opinion that even cheap bulk Pennzoil was fine. At 3,000 miles in a
older technology GM engine, it wasn't going to make much difference what oil
they used.

I believe that Marshall used to say that any modern oil, synthetic or
conventional, was a much better oil that what was available when the OM61x
engines were designed. I don't see why that logic would not extend to Don's
BMW, as long as the oil meets the spec that his engine calls for.

Paternal grandfather owned taverns and bowling alleys all his life in the St.
Louis area, and as a result was beholden to the August Busch family. Busch
Bavarian and Lowenbrau were the swills of choice around my house growing up. I
would point out that we were allowed to drink beer as early as 10-12 years old.
Wasn't a big deal around my house.

Maternal grandmother, who lived well into her 90s, drank a can of Old Milwaukee
and ate a bowl of Frost Loops cereal (dry) every night before retiring. I used
to make beer runs for her when I was driving age.

I can't believe you guys are missing the obvious. The energy answer is the
"flux capacitor". We can convert garbage to energyand we all know we have
way too much garbage in this world. Or maybe the methanol out of landfills and
convert it to synthetic diesel. Or maybe something that hasn't been thought of
yet. I still remember when solar would be the answer, then wind, then coal
gasification, and so on. We probably need a mix a many things, but most of all
those things need to pay for themselves without expecting the average taxpayer
to fund someone else's energy. Remember the company a few years back that got
$650 million from the government and then went belly up?
Keep looking. Similar to the X Files, the answer is out there.

[MBZ] OT Diesel Truck

2017-06-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Anybody in the PNW need an old diesel truck? I wasn't that familiar with the
Ford 6.9L. But, after doing some research I learned that these have mechanical
injection pumps, mechanically timed, etc. Evidently, they are super durable,
but they are slow. I'm sure this would make a great tow vehicle.

Andrew, I think there have been electric cars almost as long as there have
been gasoline engine cars. Google knows all.

http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/223/electric-car-timeline.html

Whoops, I was wrong, electric cars have been around almost 200 years!

If electric cars haven't taken over in the last 100 years, I would not be
inclined to bet that they'll make the big move in the next 100.

Someone might invent that ultra-super-capacitor, that can be charged
quickly and provide power for hundreds of miles of driving. Might happen.
Someone might also invent a bacteria that eats garbage and produces diesel
fuel, and then we'll all be driving diesel powered cars forever. We shall
know in the fullness of time...

Re: [MBZ] OT. shared a home on Zillow in Nowata

2017-06-30 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Well, if land is worth $3000 an acre, then 360 of them would be worth 1.08MM.
(but I suppose it's cheaper in Oklahoma than in the corn belt)
I'm interested in how the NG is free, do they have a manure to methane plant,
or is there a gas well on the property?

Gas well. Very common in this part of the country, probably the output from a
small oil well as NG is a byproduct.

[MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-06-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I'm about 45 minutes in and already have the hose fittings removed from the
expansion valve. Rather than continue on in this area, I'm going to start
working on removing and replacing the two hoses to the expansion valve so I can
have them in and ready to go with the new expansion valve.

I destroyed the drain tube, but it was getting pretty grungy anyway. I'll put a
solid piece of tubing in to replace it when I get ready to button up.

I was able to get to the top bolt on the support rod behind the instrument
cluster from below, so I didn't pull the cluster. One less thing to disturb.

After I hydrate I'll head back out and get under the hood to start in on
replacing the hoses to the expansion valve. This will involve removing part of
the false firewall and a lot of tie wraps from the looks of things.

Good progress so far. I expect to be slowed down with the hose replacements,
as there’s a lot of stuff in the way.

Slow only compared to a turbo.

It should pull like a strong small block gasoline from the same
time period.

It will do quite well on it's own. Up to a medium sized trailer
(5k lb) and it should do okay. With a big trailer, it will slow
down on every hill - but still get the job done.

Look at it as a great opportunity to start building a new collection of MB on
the east coast!

We'll visit you at Christmas, coming and going from a cruise. You can take a
lot of cruises from Miami.

Re: [MBZ] Okie Acres Miami?

2017-06-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You would be out of your ever-lovin’ mind.

Hottest and most expensive housing market in FL. Limited land area, as you’re
trapped in a narrow strip of fill between the ocean (hurricanes) and the
Everglades *lots of stuff that will eat you.) If you didn’t have to live in
the Miami metro area, which is sort of a joke, as the whole east coast from
Fort Pierce down to Homestead is pretty much one big city, sort of like San
Francisco, you could live in the interior, like in Sebring. More land there
and it’s a little cheaper, but hotter than Hades most of the year. Traffic is
stupid insane due to the growth.

You would be nuts to go to South Florida. They would have to pay you 2x-3x
what you’re making now to even come close to your current standard of living.

Understand that South Florida has no white anglo people there. It’s like
another country where the primary language is Spanish and a white guy like you
or me stand out like a sore thumb. Get deep into Dade County (Miami) and
people won’t even do business with you if you don’t speak the language. There
are still some small enclaves of old rich Jewish people there, but they’re few
and far between. It’s pretty much second generation Cubans and people from the
islands (DR, Haiti, etc.)

The climate is tropical, not like here where we have some semblance of seasons.
No such thing there. You’ve been to the Bahamas or Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula
on cruises, right? Same thing weather-wise.

Don’t do it. If you though you couldn’t manage the cost of living in Dallas,
you ain’t seen nothing yet.

So I’m maybe another hour into the job and I’ve already replaced the two hoses
to the expansion valve and got the new expansion valve with all new O rings all
the way around and the fittings snugged down finger tight.

While it hasn’t been a fun job, it wasn’t nearly as bad I thought it might be.

I’m going to head back out for the final push of the evening and get the
bulkhead seal on the hoses in place and the false firewall and related stuff
back together. That way in the morning I can start in on the condenser and
compressor before the day gets blazing hot.

Re: [MBZ] OT Diesel Truck

2017-06-30 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I currently own 4 of them. The low mileage truck of the fleet has 211,000
miles, the high mileage truck is showing 460,000 miles... none have had a
major engine event that required entry into the block or heads.

Speed is a function of transmission and rear engine gearing ratios. If you
want more speed, change up to a taller gear. If you want to pull something,
use a lower gear. As a diesel truck, peak power is made at about 2,300 RPM,
if you can keep in that range, power and fuel economy hit a sweet spot.

Two of the trucks have gear vendors overdrive units added into the drive
line, which lets them run 70 or 75, play well in traffic, and when you
flick overdrive off, pull like a diesel truck.. One has had a turbo added,
which really gives a kick in the butt for added power over most of the
working range.

IMHO Ford 6.9 / 7.3 engine trucks [engine is actually built by
International btw] are the Mercedes diesel of the truck world... Mechanical
everything, no computer to fail, you need one 12 volt wire to energize the
fuel solenoid at the IP... and you can push them off a hill to start, if
you have to..

There is also the point that using mid-grade in my TE burns off the

*It’s no secret

that manufacturing solar panels often requires toxic heavy metals,
explosive gases, and rare-earth elements that come from shoddy mines in
war-torn republics. But here’s a surprise: The solar industry is actually
getting dirtier in some respects. The latest Solar Scorecard
 from the Silicon Valley
Toxics Coalition (SVTC), released last week, reports that the industry has
slipped on several key environmental metrics, with many solar-panel
manufacturers now refusing to provide any information about their
manufacturing practices at all.*

No, Andrew, the MARKET did NOT speak. The GOOBERS in the GOOBERMNT
spoke, and threw, and are throwing billions of illegally taken taxpayer
Dollars to support economically unfeasible solar and wind.

For example, Tesla: Most of the cost of production is goobermnt money.
(Not to mention solendra)
Example MidAmerican Energy CEO was asked how much of the billions of
bucks being spent for their latest wind farms was tax dollars. He
looked at the interviewer and answered HONESTLY! He said "All of it"

Get yer facts straight. Goobers distort the markets, and nearly every
market has been distorted by our out of control goobers. Even the
illegal drug market is distorted by goobers.

Meade, by now the market place has spoken. The trend toward solar and wind
is overwhelming. This doesn't mean that gas cars will be phased out
overnight but the writing is on the wall.

I can't believe you guys are missing the obvious. The energy answer is
the "flux capacitor". We can convert garbage to energyand we all
know we have way too much garbage in this world. Or maybe the methanol
out of landfills and convert it to synthetic diesel. Or maybe
something that hasn't been thought of yet. I still remember when solar
would be the answer, then wind, then coal gasification, and so on. We
probably need a mix a many things, but most of all those things need
to pay for themselves without expecting the average taxpayer to fund
someone else's energy. Remember the company a few years back that got
$650 million from the government and then went belly up?

Keep looking. Similar to the X Files, the answer is out there.

Exact same thing can be said of the 12V Cummins in the Dodge. And if you
don't have any electricity, I think you can use a zip tie to hold the fuel
solenoid on so it'll run.
