I forget what they put in propane; maybe I'm remembering that name.

Anyway, http://www.wisegeek.org/why-do-skunks-smell-so-bad.htm says,

The smell of skunk spray is caused by sulfurous compounds called
thiols which combine to form a substance called mercaptan. These
thiols have a strong odor, and mix with other chemicals which make
the scent stick. This is why animals who have been sprayed sometimes
have a faint odor for several weeks, because although the thiols have
been mostly neutralized, trace amounts of them still cling to fur.
The chemicals which cause skunk spray to cling are used in cosmetics
and perfumes for lasting odor power, after the thiols have been
 removed.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-mercaptan.htm describes what mercaptains
are:
Mercaptan is a generic term for a family of organic sulfur compounds
that contain a sulfhydril (SH) group bonded to a carbon atom. They
are analogous to alcohols in structure, with the oxygen in the
alcohol replaced by sulfur, which belongs to the same group of
elements; instead of the hydroxyl (OH) group found in alcohols,
mercaptans — also known as thiols — have a sulfhydril group. Alcohols
such as methanol (CH3OH) and ethanol (CH3CH2OH) thus have thiol
equivalents: methanethiol (CH3SH) and ethanethiol (CH3CH2SH). The
name is an abbreviation for mercurium captans, Latin for “capturing
mercury,” as these compounds combine easily with mercury. Mercaptans
are notable for their very strong, and usually unpleasant, odors.

While all of the suggested methods are interesting, if you are having
trouble with them at night, I suggest a light. Both in Colorado Springs,
where we used to live, and in Moriarty, where we now live, whenever we
smell a skunk through an open window, we turn on the outside lights.
Shortly thereafter, the skunks move on and the smell goes away.

If you do prompt them to release their cargo, there are enzymatic
products which break down the diethylmercaptan and destroy the smell
available (most likely for treating hunting dogs).

Skunk spray nozzle is located as part of the anal gland group...
apparently, getting shot in the heat causes sphincter contraction, thus
spray.

There is no clean method for dispatch of a skunk Suggest you procure a
flame thrower.. mount flame thrower on a metal plate that fits one end of
the culvert.. mount another metal grate with remote control that will drop
into place closing off the culvert and triggering the flame thrower in

Our Golden Retriever retrieved a baby skunk- I had hoped that baby skunks
didn't yet spray. Wrongo. Sprayed down his throat. I think skunks are built
like,124 A.C.. spray comes first & build skunk around it.

It appears a group of at least 4 skunks have moved into
the culvert at the end of the drive.

Anyone know if a skunk will spray if I shoot it in the head?

I thought about blocking both ends of the culvert and using
acetylene gas (from carbide) or gasoline engine exhaust to kill
them.  But then I have dead skunks in a small culvert where the
turkey vultures and coyotes can't get in to "clean up".

Or I could gas the culvert, but leave the one end open and shoot
them as they come out.  But I would like to avoid the skunk smell
in the yard...

I don't mind just convincing them to move on - but considering the
mess they make in the yard and garden digging for grubs etc, I'm
willing to terminate.

Re: [MBZ] I need a groundhog recipe

2017-08-28 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Young daughters cat was death on blue jays. When he went outside they would
swoop and peck at him. He'd stop and roll over on his back. When the blue jays
swooped he would grab at them and snag them once in a while. Then he would
bring the dead jay into the house and lay it at my wifes feet. This did not
make her happy, but we never figured out how to stop him.
When the hedge or plants around the back yard produced berries, the jays would
eat them and stagger around like a drunk, but I never remember the cat catching
any of them then for some reason.

Pressing question... How do I transport my Mercedes collection to Mars and
why would I?

It's my observation there are a number of groups of people on the planet

Perhaps, that is the why? Wonder what a "Mars Maybach" would look like...

This is like saying your Chevy Spark is pretty nice compared to a nice
Mercedes. They've both got the same purpose but are not the same thing. Kirby
makes a superior product to anything you can buy outside of a vacuum specialty
store.
I'd have bought the Kirby if we didn't already have central vac...
One thing the Kirby guy taught me is to vacuum the bed. Strip the sheets off

Re: [MBZ] OT: Kirby vacuum

2017-08-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
We bought a Dyson Ball vacuum a couple years ago, so far it is holding up
well, although the plastic construction seems quite flimsy to me. It is
quieter, uses less power, and is easier to move around than the Hoover
windtunnel it replaced, and it does seem to pick up more dirt. Personally
I think the "bagless" design of this vacuum is sort of a gimmick, because
it is small and fills up quickly, but we do save on filters. There are two
filters on this Dyson, one in the final stage of the "bagless" design
(washable, haven't needed to wash it yet) and another filter for the
motor. I should probably check that filter on the motor, forgot about it
until now. The other issue I have with this Dyson is that it doesn't lay
down flat to go under a bed or a dresser, so one has to resort to the wand
to get under furniture.

Yeah I did have that higher at first but it didn't seem to do as
good a job so I dropped it to the deck and it worked better. I
think I have to get a new beater brush head. The one on there
looks to be a bit on the worn side. That would make a difference
also. Too bad Gramma didn't send it to get rebuilt while she was
alive, now it's a bit too late. They probably wouldn't believe

Re: [MBZ] OT: Kirby vacuum

2017-08-28 Thread MG via Mercedes
Do you know if they all come with all the extras? This one seems
to be missing the butler attachment, that grinder and supper
Dremel tool. If they do then probably one of my BIL go it a long
time ago.

The wife brought home her Mom's Kirby upright vacuum that Mom had been
using since the old man bought it for her back in the 50's. Seems our
second daughter had laid claim to it many years ago and grandma told her it
was hers when she was done with it. Well the time is here and June takes it
down to her. SIL takes one look at it and asks my daughter what possible
use she could have for an old piece of junk like that. Mind you this has
all the original attachments still in the original boxes. So Samantha being
the good wife decides she doesn't want it. I really thought I had taught
her better. Anyway I decided to vacuum the living room, kitchen and hall
today. OMG what a workout! It isn't that the thing is heavy, the
kitchen was easy, but when I hit the carpet it was like pushing a tank. You
could see the vacuum picking up the carpet. I wish my "heavy duty" shop vac
had even half the suction of this. I may see if I can steal this to use in
the shop, but I'm very much afraid that I may not get a chance. June thinks
it "isn't too bad" so I'll just have to dream about an adequate shop vac.

I've heard about how good these are but as they say seeing is believing. I
guess the next job is taking it apart and doing a service, clean and oil.
I'll be Googling for that later.

I could be wrong, but none of those solutions sounded particularly
non-lethal.

This morning, I found the strawberry had been removed from the trap and set
just in front of it. My groundhog must belong to Mensa.

Definitely looks like a nice basis for a project if the car is rust free
and has been kept up, but probably it has been neglected.

When I lived in WI there were still a number of mink ranchers around the plant
where I worked. They had a wooden box on the back of a four wheeler with the
exhaust plumbed through it that they rode around the property. When it was time
to "harvest" the mink, they drove up to the pens, took them out one at a time,
put them in the box and revved the engine for a minute or two.

Open the box, remove the now deceased mink, and move on to the next one...
