I think he meant DA/SA.

Revolvers were Single Action (pull the hammer back to cock, then pull the
trigger to fire), then some are Double Action (pull the trigger to cock and
fire, or pull the hammer back first to get a light trigger pull like a Single
Action).

The Double Action revolver got its name from the fact that there are two ways
to use it, but somewhere along the line people thought DA meant 'trigger
cocking', and the nomenclature got butchered a bit in regard to pistols.

Pistols are Single Action (work the slide or thumb the hammer to cock, then a
light short trigger pull to fire), or Double Action, which people call DA/SA,
you can fire the first shot by trigger cocking from a hammer down position,
then the slide cocks the hammer automatically for successive shots.
There's also Double Action Only, which means it has a single means of operating
the action, pull the trigger through a long heavy stroke to cock it on the
first shot and every following shot. Some of the striker fired pistols (named
for a sliding striker instead of a swinging hammer) cock the striker part of
the way automatically, then you finish the job by pulling the trigger, we call
them double action but the trigger pull is shorter and lighter than a double
action hammer operated pistol.

Mitch.

It's the universal paint cleaner at the body shop I go to.
Had some yardman's paint pencil on the outside of the fender I bought for my
ML350. 30 seconds with the lacquer thinner and it was gone.
That reminds me, I need to wash and wax the ML, especially that fender.

I have a CZ-85 which is an ambidextrous version of the CZ-75. The CZ-75 is an
older, full-size, all metal, SA/DA hammer design; but I like it. I also have
a Ruger P95m which is pretty ambi, except for the slide release, also an older
full size hammer design but with a plastic frame. I'm sure there are many
newer plastic striker-fired models that are lefty or ambi, but I haven't been
following them.

My Walther PPQ is considered to be ambidextrous. The only thing that’s unique

There seemed to be different quality of replacement key heads. The
first ones I got from Q were junk. The later ones were good, and the

you just slid the key in. Others had a cover, so you slid the key in

Gently heat the rubber key holder to make it flexible and hopefully just a
micrometer larger. Stick key in freezer to hopefully make it a micrometer
smaller. Well, ok, stick the key in the freezer the night before, but
still. Then slowly work it into the seat.

I've probably told this story before but...Years ago we used to shoot
a lot of metallic silhouette, I was never that good but the juniors
class had mostly casual shooters so I did pretty well. One time the
police were using our range during our normal practice time. We waited
around to see if they'd quit before it got too dark for us to shoot.
They were shooting man sized metallic targets from 10 meters and
hitting about 3 in 10. We were shooting targets about the size of a
dinner plate at 1000 meters and when I was doing well I could do 4 in
10 with an open sight pistol.
One of the guys commented that he "heard a long more bangs than
dings", metallic targets ring when you hit them. The cop retorted
"Think you can do better?" my friend replies "he can" and points at
me, the 15 year old idiot kid. The cop gives me one of their guns to
shoot but I want to do it at 100 meters. So they all pull back and I
proceed to put 8 shots into the target (the first two were finding the
elevation) and the cops throw us off the range for "being unsafe".We
joked for years that we were "unsafe for the police ego."
I don't really have a lot of respect for the average LEO's ability to
shoot.

Mitch Haley via Mercedes

It's usually due to criminal malfeasance of prosecutors and/or cops.
I think some cops are crooked and most prosecutors are crooked. And
many judges used to be crooked prosecutors. Greg might have another
view of that subject.

In this famous case local to me, a crooked prosecutor instructed a cop
to re-do a video analysis timeline so that it no longer proved
innocence. But how a lack of proof of innocence resulted in conviction
is indeed a question for the judge and jury. The prosecutor was fired,
not prosecuted for suborning of perjury. The perjuring cop is
comfortably enjoying his pension in Pennsylvania.

And I think poor Claude finally learned that you never talk to cops.

Does that tool work with a stock boot or is it a special, more flexible
boot?

Re: [MBZ] paint repair question

2017-12-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Lacquer thinner is pretty aggressive stuff. I don’t like to use it on modern
finishes myself. My go-to after warm soapy water and/or a fingernail is 3M
Adhesive Remover, but that’s not something a lot of folks have sitting around.
It’s probably as aggressive as lacquer thinner, but it’s been tested on modern
finishes.

Steel wool?? Yikes! You might as well put a grinding wheel to it, especially
if it’s got a clear coat.

Re: [MBZ] Right rear outside axle boot

2017-12-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I believe your choices are limited, based on research I did for the same some
months ago.

You can order the OE boot, disassemble the axle and joint and install it; or,

Find someone who has the tool to do the expandable boots that can be installed
on the axle as an assembly (as opposed to having to disassemble.)

I looked far and wide for a split boot, realizing that it’s a bandaid at best,
but no luck.

[MBZ] paint repair question

2017-12-04 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
How would you remove a couple of streaks of white latex (most likely)
paint from the surface of a vehicle? Varsol? Bug and Tar remover?

Long story, but yesterday, I went to a friend's house to pick up
something. He had visitors parking in his extra space and in front of
his garage door.

I pulle in accross the lane in front of another garage with 2 overhead
doors. I know the folks who own that house too so I was not too worried
about pulling onto the apron. I did not expect to be very long.

Their garage has old style single panel doors so when they open, they
turn out and up. They did not know my truck was there so when they
opened the garage door, it struck the fender flair on my truck.

It looks as though it just smeared a bit of white paint on the flair so
I think it will come off without leaving much of a mark so long as I
don't damage the paint trying to remove it. I would think the garage
door was just painted with white latex paint as it is flat and not shiny.

My own fault for parking there and not going to their door to warn
them. I was thinking worst case scenario they would come home and find
me blocking their garage access and not really thinking they would hit
the truck if they were home and wanted to leave.
