Re: [MBZ] OT Go Navy!
NY Times isn't worth lining a monkey cage. ALL airlines are on progressive maintenance schedules which are based on number of cycles or hours of operation for each component on the engine AND the air frame. The implication it had not been touched in 18 years is both false and absurd reporting by someone who truly does NOT understand how aviation works and it's rules. Re: [MBZ] OT Go Navy!
Being deeply involved in the aviation parts supply chain for 50 years, I find it very unlikely failure was due to a "counterfeit part". I can say with firm conviction the entire maintenance supply chain that involves Southwest Airlines is and will be bending over and grabbing their socks for some time to come. "I'm from the FAA and I'm here to help you, because we are not happy until you are not happy." Is something that sticks in my mind, as owner of several FAA Licensed Repair Stations. over the years. This entire incident will be methodically investigated until the full cause can be identified, then corrective action will be taken via FAA directives as may be needed to preclude any possible re-occurrence... That is how FAA works. On Wed, Apr 18, 2018 at 2:10 PM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I was on one of these birds once when the starboard engine failed. IIRC we were bound for PDX from San Jose, did an emergency landing in Medford(?) and were bussed up the rest of the way. Do birds fly at 35,000 ft.? I was wondering if there were a problem with Southwest's parts supply chain? Could this have been the result of counterfeit engine parts? I like to sit within a few rows of the back. It is the most survivable position. I kept my seatbelt fastened, if loose, all the time, unless I was out of the seat every time I have flown as an adult. You get treated like a dog or hog if you sit in the back, but to me it is worth that to be in the most survivable part of the plane. Somehow, I envisioned the possibility of a prop or turbine failure or other decompression event long before the Aloha sunroof, or the missing cargo door, or other scenarios that resulted in rapid decompression. OK Don via Mercedes wrote: Yes - don't sit opposite/between the engines - a few rows either in front or behind should be fine. Re: [MBZ] OT Go Navy!
Based on the very limited pictures of the damaged engine, it appears the fan lost blades, or the fan hub failed. The result looks like fan containment ring was destroyed which indicates to me an abrupt and complete failure of the fan hub, or the fan gear box. Subsequent nacelle damage, aft of the fan inlet / containment ring, would indicate, from my experience, "normal" destruction following fan ingestion by the compressor section [which sets behind the fan gear box.]. Some years ago, I worked with a major engine manufacturer in their bird ingestion testing [to engine failure] on their test stands. It involved firing multiple fully fledged 3 lb. chickens [newly deceased] from an air cannon at 170 mph, into the intake of an engine running at 100% takeoff power. All while being filmed with high speed camera. First lesson learned was, chickens are NOT certified to fly at 170 MPH. Second lesson learned, multiple bird strikes did millions of dollars damage to the test engine. Subsequent tear down and inspection showed damage quite similar to what I see in the photos, so far... Coworker has a Veloster that they bought new two years ago. Major POS. Reliability has been good, but interior material quality is awful. [MBZ] Trio to Austin TX from Michigan
I am driving from Kalamazoo, MI to visit my daughter at 5213 Jim Hogg, Austin TX. (love that street name) I’m leaving this Friday and returning on or about next Friday. I will be driving my 1985 300D. Does anyone in-between/on the way (within reason) need anything picked up and delivered? It might be kinda fun to swing by Kaleb”s Mercedes Ranch to see his collection and visit a bit. I was considering driving a 2016 Hyundai Veloster that I was selling for a friend. Thanks goodness we sold it. It only had 7000 miles on it and sold for $11,000 to a dealer in Kalamazoo. The friend bought it for $20,500 then died about 6 months afterwords. I delivered it Kzoo from my home in Whitehall, about a 2 hour drive. It was a very uncomfortable ride. I just did not fit well in the seat and it was difficult to get out of. I’m 61, 5’10 and weigh 220 pounds. It drives and handles very well. One odd thing is that the warrantee from the new car does not transfer to the new owner. Each new owner must purchase a new warrantee package if they want to. Is that normal? I have not bought a new car since 2005. Re: [MBZ] Rare refrigerator? Or rare crack?
Understand that “refrigerator” is really a misnomer in this case. It’s actually a type of evaporative cooler, like the cheap dorm fridges that aren’t real refrigerators. It keeps things cool, but not cold. If you’re referencing the skis in the trunk option, that’s VERY rare here. I’ve only seen it once, and that was on a W140 sedan that was retrofitted with it. It requires a different back seat and fuel tank. Re: [MBZ] Costco Mobil 1 $26.99
I'm debating what to put in the ASV for next winter. Its down to M1 5w40 or Rotella T6 in 5w40. The only reason I'm considering Rotella is cost. If the machine gets 40 hours on it for the season I'd be surprised. I want the thinner oil for easier starting... -Curt On Wednesday, April 18, 2018, 10:08:49 AM EDT, Dwight Giles via Mercedeswrote: Yes when I first put M1 in my 79 240D it would pop right off on a triple glow,at 10F.
