Looking at the Sturmey Archer website, I see that what I have would be 3

One is from a snears bike and appears to be SS body. On the other one
the chrome is rusty.

The glow plugs are not working right. Properly functioning plugs would heat up
enough that you would only need turn the key and it would light off. No more
than a second for the starter to spin it up. If there is cranking going on,
either the battery is low, the starter is junk, or the glow plugs are not
working

Better to find kids with common sense, then teach the ones with aptitude
engineering simulation.

A dufus I knew in kolledge gragitated, and went to work for Boeing. He
could not find his ass with one hand and a mirror in the other. Not one
shred of common sense.

However a friend of mine who was an A&P first, went through the
industrial Ed BS degree, got hired at Boeing, and progressed rapidly,
including "Black hole" programs and commercial aircraft, an indication

[MBZ] MB C240 wagon

2018-04-23 Thread Jon Kanas via Mercedes

Good Evening Fred et al,

I purchased a used 2003 C240 4-Matic wagon in 2013. I've
put about 40K miles on it since then and am extremely
pleased with it. I have had no issues with it during my
ownership. I have been advised that if the fluid in the
transfer case becomes contaminated it will cause the
transfer case to bind prematurely, causing a driveability
issue. I did the 90K maintenance in the traditional manner,
changing all of the lubricants (including transfer case);
The idea of "lifetime" fluids bothers me, so I spent some
extra money and did it all. I have had no issues during my
ownership. My previous Mercedes was a 1988 300TE; I much
prefer the smaller wagon - it handles very, very well.

I did have added an aftermarket BlueTooth module to support
my cellphone added into the factory entertainment system so
that the display and factory controls work with my phone.
That module has is not as reliable as I might like, although
it is no fault of the car.

2018-04-23 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
About a year or so ago I had the chance to buy one just a few miles down the
road for like $9k. It needed a few things but no big deal. Dave said I should
jump on it but I didn’t.

2018-04-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I read an article somewhere from the last century, when these cars were
sold new, about a tuner shop that had a kit for the 124 transmissions that
shortened up the shift times, which reduced the 0-60 time by a few shades.
I think it was a tuned up valve body? Seems like it was something external
that required a bit of tuning and tweaking to get it all set up.

It would also be fun to add a turbo charger. I'll bet that for a LOT less
than the price of a 500E, one could do something to boost performance. The
easy way out would be just get a 560 engine from a S class and stuff that
in there.

Sounds like a plan. No, not all do the plan, but it seems that the
efforts to move things along are quite effective - all the way thru
the "education" processes of indoctrination, etc. Yeah, it gets
political real quick so not appropriate for okiebenz except for in the

No no no, you need to get that red 107 for $3300 that I posted yesterday,
and do a BaT Flip.

"Turns heads everywhere" as in "Did you see that black-on-black Mustang"
?? ;)

Last night we were driving home from Wal-Mart-by-the-Sea (aka Myrtle Beach)
after my daughter performed with a church choir in an evensong service.
One kid from that home church played J.S. Bach's Taccata in D minor (
https://youtu.be/ho9rZjlsyYY) on their organ, which was really fun. He was
kind of rough around the edges but he just powered through his mistakes and
I think he was really enjoying playing that to an audience. Daughter had a
couple solo parts in an arrangement of Psalm 23 set to organ music, she had
some nervousness and stage freight before but she really nailed it.

Anyway, back to the story, it's after dark and we're cruising along a very
rural stretch of the highway coming back down the coast, and we came up on
a car going slower. I said "That's an old Mercedes" when I saw the
taillights, and sho-nuff it was a nice R107 just loafing along. The
designs from all those 70's thru mid-90's cars are so recognizable even at
night. Later on just as we entered the edge of town with street lights, we
also passed a really nice looking 230SL.

Re: [MBZ] Education

2018-04-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I am involved with our local community issues here, participate in
several groups. One of them is a mix of white folks and black folks,
kinda unique in that regard.  One of my old black friends, who is a
total badass going back to the 50s, has been angry for years that the
schools have dropped the manual arts training they used to do, with the
emphasis now on college as the only worthwhile track.  The result is
that a lot of kids (maybe) graduate with fairly useless knowledge, if
they managed to pick any up, and are totally unequipped to go forth and
earn a living. Around here a lot of the brickmasons were black, and did
some amazing work.  That has pretty much gone away now, along with all
the other trades and skills that can only be accessed now from the Tech
College, which is kinda late and difficult to deal with.  The result is
that black kids in particular in our area are sorta cut out of the
economy, it's sorta the old education segregation in a new way.

The new Volvo and Mercedes plants coming on line are having a difficult
time right now finding good employees, go figure, even though they are
willing to train them.

[MBZ] Mr. Mercedes

2018-04-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Went over to some young friends' house yesterday for a small brunch and
to pick some loquats.  The guy works in movies, camera guy or some such,
he is always working on various projects that are being made in the
area.  Another of his friends shows up with a Mr. Mercedes trucker cap
the crew got.  I effused over it but he did not offer it to me.  I said
I had heard about the show but never seen it.  He told me not to waste
my time, the hat was the best thing about it.

He also told a story of another friend of theirs who was filming some
zombie movie or something in Montana or Utah, somewhere out west.  He
gets stopped for speeding, was on the way to the location with one of
the actresses who was made up to look all dirty and bloody, torn clothes
and what not.  Machete in the back seat.  The cop kinda freaked out but
they managed to explain that situation, but still got a speeding ticket.

Re: [MBZ] Somebody crapped their pants on the interstate

2018-04-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Former next door neighbor is an engineer, does “forensic commercial HVAC” work
for an insurer, whatever that is.

Wandered over one day to hear him fussing over a weed wacker he had
disassembled. He’s trying to thread the flat spring for the recoil starter
back into the cup that contains it. He says he’s been trying to do this for
the better part of an hour, but can’t get it stuffed all the way into the cup.

I take it from him, coil the spring down tightly into the smallest possible
coil it can be, place it inside the cup and let go. Voilá!

He is amazed.

That’s the difference between an engineer and someone with practical experience.

True dat. Same variety of practical don't-kill-yourself abilities in
engineering school as anyplace else.
Only would have taken _one_ person on that trip to have any experience
properly loading trailers, or else
boats or aircraft, to prevent that. Ultimately, blame the driver. Likely
those kids would have managed
a perfect loading, if only they'd known that it was something you needed to
do.

My son and I were driving (him at wheel) and were on the road behind a
motorcycle where the guy
had 'cleverly' arranged for his golf clubs to ride pillion. I remember
thinking to myself that the situation
looked dicey to me. As our speeds increased I could see the bike start to
go into a death wobble.
The guy salvaged the situation and was able to slow down, and pulled off.

"Did you see that?" "Yes". "He almost died right there." That led into a
little discussion of centers
of gravity, and loading. Those club heads were a couple of feet above head
height, the weight was
all in the _worst_ possible place. I felt sorry for the guy, having
invested all that effort into making a
custom carrying bracket/suicide machine. Glad he didn't lose his bike,
clubs, and life, nor take
anybody else with him.

I like Greenville, the hills and proximity to mountains is a very nice
change from flat land "low country". They're also the main political
rival to Chucktown, and (in my opinion) have some kind of inferiority
complex about it so they tend to go above and beyond to show they're better
than us. Much cooler weather in the summer too.

Re: [MBZ] MB C240 Wagon

2018-04-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Common wisdom is that the cheap class was made to be pretty robust, as they
were the usual choice for the taxi fleets and if taxi drivers hated them
and talked them down, then MB's reputation would suffer. I don't know how
true that is, but if that holds true then I'll bet a C-wagon in good shape
with maintenance records is a good bet. I did have a buddy who bought a
similar era C car, used, and loved it for the ride and comfort (stepping up
from some Ford product) but quickly found out that maintenance was way more
expensive than what he was used to , so he got rid of it.

[MBZ] Paint codes and bumper painting

2018-04-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
It turns out that the front bumper from the '92 sedan is a different color
than the bumper on my '95 cabriolet, so I'll have to paint it. The color
is a slightly darker shade of grey.

According to the free online EPC site, the datacard paint code is 149
(glacier white). PaintScratch.com has the two-tone combination for 149 as
7201 (marble grey - matte)

So I'm going to sand the existing bumper paint a bit to scuff it up, I'm
not planning to strip it down to bare plastic.

Do I need all the fancy special "adhesive promoters" and primers meant for
plastic bumper, or will I be OK with just putting the correct top-coat on?

The bulb will also not light during the pre-glow cycle if one or more plugs
are burned out, and then usually it will light up after the engine is
running, maybe just light up for 20 seconds or so and then go out.

Personally I'd check all the glow plugs first, as those fail far more often
than the light bulbs.
