Re: [MBZ] Value of Old Things
The kids do not do any actually cooking. They are not as crafty or manually dexterous either. I was reading an article about how the new breed of doctor can not perform basic surgical tasks, because they lack the fine motor skills and never were exposed to things like sewing or other crafty things. They are really good at manipulating the ipad with the patient charts though. I think the lack of regard for traditional housewares is due to the people having kids since the 1960’s. A reaction to the “old” ways that they grew up in. Just can’t be like mom and dad with Grandma’s good china and the silver. Too Bougie for them. So they did not inculcate an appreciation for quality furniture, china, silver or etiquette. Their children are under educated, uncultured boors who think nothing of eating off plastic plates and know only how to micro nuke a bag of popped corn. I hated that nasty tree on the rental I used last year. Stupid video game to virtue signal just how much better than the guy in that smoky diesel you are. The new cars are all rolling video games that get crap gas mileage. I continue to search for a solution for Allen. A fairly recent used car gets no better fuel usage than I was getting over 25 years ago in a japanese car. Now a person needs to be in a plastic car with a midget motor and video screens to more efficiently use petrol? Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)
I've tapped 2 deer, one I hit in the butt with my Ranger, I don't think it killed her, I never found her anyway. That one bent the bumper into the tire at hard lock and ruined the fog light. The other I hit with my '85 190D (MB content), it was standing on the yellow line when I noticed it and commenced hard braking. I ended up hitting that one in the face with the driver's mirror. The fact that it didn't break the mirror suggests I didn't hit it that hard. We got stopped and I looked back to see the deer shake its head and bound off the road... -Curt On Saturday, December 8, 2018, 4:08:06 PM EST, ROGER HALE via Mercedes wrote: Sorry Mitch, but I didn't tag you to this thread. Dan, What you mentioned about furniture and other old things is sadly true. Young people today want disposable dinnerware, less furniture, and lack any idea of quality and the craftsmanship it takes to create quality. Our sales have declined over the last few years. We never really dealt in furniture, especially big stuff. We see it at auctions and estate sales and it goes for really cheap prices...sad to see. Actually, I should have said Chevy HHRs, I think. I just always thought Chrysler PT Cruisers and Chevy HHRs were sort of pussy cars. Worked with a guy who was newly married and had a kid on the way. His in-laws gave he and his wife an HHR, and he was so embarrassed that he would park it in the student lot of the school we worked at so no one would see him driving it. Whatever. I guess it’s just perpetuation of a stereotype, like Subarus are all driven by gay people. -D > On Dec 8, 2018, at 8:22 PM, Dimitri wrote: > > Nope just the Priapism. Re: [MBZ] This wagon again
No. At the top of the panel, just above where you see the icons for the first aid kit and jack/tools, is a black plastic handle that releases the panel and allows it to fold out and down towards the cargo area. It’s hinged at the bottom where it meets the floor of the cargo area. Same thing on the left side, only the spare is behind that one. You can barely see the black plastic handle/release at the top of each panel on both sides, the rear pillars are block part of the view. -D > On Dec 8, 2018, at 7:27 PM, Craig via Mercedes wrote: > > On Sat, 8 Dec 2018 18:46:44 -0500 Dan Penoff via Mercedes > wrote: > >> Right side cargo area. Then, the most effective reaction is to sound the horn. And not a polite "toot, toot" but push the button and keep pushing until the risk is over. At the same time, slow down. And don't keep watching the deer you spotted. Very often there are more around and any that you see you have already seen and the _unseen_ ones are the most surprising. This is based on many, many miles of driving in rural deer country. So while I have impacted many deer, the one that got this wagon is the only contact in the last decade or so that I have used the horn. There have been at least a dozen situations that could have easily included impact. Of course, I can't say what would have really happened. In urban and suburban, the horn sounding may be an issue. This guy with the 200D was in 2001. The deductions were ok then. It is still the way many survivors get rid of mom or dad's "old car." Call em up, they tow it off. Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)
Roger, I thought your 300SD was pretty much a daily driver? Is that not the case? I’m a little curious about something, as I was thinking about you the other day. There’s a high end resale furniture shop that I frequent here, since I used to build custom furniture when I had the space and equipment to do so. I like to go in and look over the pieces they take in, which are sometimes very unusual and unique pieces from estates and other such sources. I deeply appreciate the fine work that went into creating these sorts of things, and I really enjoy looking at them in detail to see how the builder made certain joints or applied marquetry to enhance a part of the design. While I was speaking with one of the owners as I walked through the store with them, they were bemoaning the fact that furniture such as china cabinets and sideboards were falling by the wayside and starting to disappear from a lot of furniture builder’s catalogs. They seem to think that the current generations no longer place any value on such legacy possessions such as the family silver or china, or have any desire to own furniture such as this. They say that more often than not, younger clients are coming in and buying dining room furniture and leaving the china cabinets behind. Since you deal in china, I was wondering if you are seeing a similar decrease in interest in such things? On a related note, I was just looking at our family silver that was handed down to me. We use it when we have family gatherings or guests, but I can see why others might not place a lot of value on such things. For that matter, I was also looking at the tea service I gave the wife for an anniversary gift many, many years ago. It has almost no value on the market these days - not that we would ever sell it. -D > On Dec 8, 2018, at 4:07 PM, ROGER HALE via Mercedes > wrote: > > Sorry Mitch, but I didn't tag you to this thread. It's amusing how some people feel so threatened by the humble Prius, which just runs and runs for years with little maintainence, that they write baseless reams of criticism even though they know little about it. I sometimes print out these diatribes and show them to fellow Prius owners at the Wine and Cheese bar; much to their own amusement. Gerry P.S. I had a friend who bought one of the first Prii. She’s about as environmentally conscious as one of those kids who drive the big diesel trucks that roll coal. Her husband is a bean counter, and he bought it based on the numbers. What I got a kick out of was that the battery puked on it before their loan was up. I think they got quoted over $2k to replace it. I gave the bean counter husband a load of crap about it after that. I think she drives a CPO E class now. So much for depreciation! -D > On Dec 8, 2018, at 1:15 PM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > wrote: > > It’s funny about Pious drivers, they span the range of politics and religion. > I have friends who have them who are hard core Trumpers and some who are hard > core Bernie/H->illary! folks. [MBZ] Angie's car gets an upgrade, then an oops
Angie's car was up for its yearly inspection a couple weeks ago but had the check engine light on.Turns out VW put a sensor on the turbo to figure the turbo actuator (variable vanes instead of a wastegate) position. The sensor is really redundant, you know the position by knowing the output pressure of the turbo and they fail with some regularity. I guess at 200,000 miles I can't really complain. The problem is the sensor isn't available separately, you need to replace the whole turbo. Instead you can get it tuned out, which is to say you just tell the computer "nothing to see here". Thats about $100, way better than an $800 turbo.Well for $300 you can do a stage 1 tune which takes you from 100hp to 124 (227#ft) and includes the turbo fix and EGR delete for free so I opted for that. An '05 Golf TDI is already pretty speedy but with the stage 1 tune its really speedy, like pay attention to what you're doing speedy. Pretty fun and it now passes inspection. Last week, coming home from game night I'm dozing in the passenger seat and notice the blue lights of officer friendly. Apparently we were doing 52 in a 40 zone. I had mentioned to my dear wife in the past that I thought she'd started to get a little speedy, that was met with a "Mind your own business" kind of response. Sitting there waiting for the officer neither of us said a word but I could hear "You just keep your %&*%!%$ mouth shut bub", she didn't need to say a word. Officer friendly proved true to his name and let her go with a warning, I waited awhile before ribbing her about it... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Constant improvement in fuel management from K Jetronic in the Euro cars of the mid 1970s, through the direct injection systems of today, yeah, that's made a lot of difference. Not sure if I posted it but I found an MB oil chart maybe in some Benzworld forum that basically said a whole range of oils would work, up to10W60 which is what the fancy stuff in the trunk is. There was some temperature dependency, the higher weight stuff for warmer temps, which is summer around here. Appears basic M1 10W40 would be fine year round. Manual was not specific in regard to a specific weight. I did dump in a quart of M1 10Wsomething I had to bring it up a bit on the dipstick to the middle of the range. I finally finished this last night. What a pain. I had to take the alternator out of the car to get the remains of the pulley off. Had to remove the pipe coming out of the turbo going to the intercooler to get it out, which was ok but getting it back in was a huge ordeal. Very tight in there and twisty all working from underneath. I finally figured it out. The hub of the pulley was munched to where I had to take the grinder to the front end of it to get some clean splines to put the tool in there. (Max loaned me the tool, yay Max!). Used the HF electric impact wrench and it spun right off, I couldn’t budge it with the hand wrenches. The new one went on easily. Car back on the road. This seems like a really dumb idea having this design with this weird pulley but it’s guess the Benz engineers knew what they were doing... the part was cheap enough but R&R was hugely unpleasant. FYI the tool has two parts, one is a splined-end rod about 4in long that fits in a splined hole in the shaft (it has a 1/2in drive end) then the other is a splined inverted “socket” that slides over the rod and into the pulley hub, it has like a 15mm “nut” end, you use them to spin the shaft while holding the pulley. Re: [MBZ] A Heartwarming Tale For Dimitri
I’m with Mitch. I’m not hung up on mpg, but when I have the ability to improve it with my driving habits or otherwise I’ll do it. When I was driving the Ford Fusion hybrid when the S420 got totaled, they had a little thing in the instrument panel that showed a tree with leaves on it. That is, you got “leafs” as you drove the car more efficiently. So now it’s a challenge for me. After driving the car for 2-1/2 weeks I think I put 10 gallons of gas in it and the “tree” was pretty well “leafed” out. I joked with the wife about how if she had a car like that the tree would just be a bunch of dead sticks…. -D > On Dec 8, 2018, at 8:17 AM, Curley McLain via Mercedes > wrote: > > Back in 1971 when I bought my first MB, cars got 17-18 MPG if you drove for > mileage. Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)
Well, since Roger tagged me to this thread... I have a W163 that had been sitting for a few weeks. The previous owner sold it to State Farm after pasting a deer with the left front corner. I have no idea what happened to the venison. I replaced the radiator, headlight, hood/grille, and fender. Still need to replace the fog light, and the front bumper cover has cracks in it, but the cracks are no longer stuffed with deer hair. This weekend's projects include replacing 12 spark plugs and changing the oil. Re: [MBZ] A Heartwarming Tale For Dimitri
Back in 1971 when I bought my first MB, cars got 17-18 MPG if you drove for mileage. My 67 Chevelle got 10, no matter what I did to try to improve mileage. My 66 Bronco (acquired in 1973) got 10, no matter what I did to try to get better mileage. Gas was mostly 35.9¢ and Diesel 27.9 to 28.8¢/gal. In this environment, my 190Dc and later 200D got 27 to 30 and as much as 35 mpg. You can figger out what a savings that was. Later I had the wabbit at 50 mpg, the escort at 50-55 mpg and the quantum at 45 mpg, loaded to the gills and going 75. In high MPG conditions it would probably do 50-55 also. I gave up the high mileage game when I got the first SDL. The speed and comfort was amazing. The kids not only didn't complain about riding in it, but enjoyed riding in the back seat. It was the reliability and MPG that sold many people on a MB Diesel in the early 80s, after 15 yrs of detriot iron getting worse all the time. Re: [MBZ] 300CD door handle
More specifically: 1.) Get a small flat bladed screwdriver. Pull out on the handle, and near the hinge of the handle use the screwdriver to pry the black plastic cover out of the frame. It has a little tab that hold the front edge of it in place, the back side of it (the side closest to the handle hinge) is held in with pressure. 2.) With the plastic cover removed, you’ll see a phillips head screw in the middle of the frame. Remove it. 3.) Pull out on the frame and handle and it will come loose from the door card. It will have a metal rod attached to the back of the handle. Pul the rod out of the hole in the handle and the handle will now be free. Reverse the procedure to install the new handle. I can recall doing this on pretty much every new W123 and W126 when I go it, since the driver’s door release handles were always worn out and sloppy. Might I ask what a new door handle costs these days? Just curious... -D > On Dec 7, 2018, at 11:04 PM, Curley McLain via Mercedes > wrote: > > If it is similar to a regular 123, there is one screw that holds it in.
