And to you and yours, hopes for lots of good motoring in the Benzes in the
coming new year.

I am back home somewhat mobile with a walker, camping in the guest room for now
to avoid steps, postponing any celebrations for a week or so.

Y’all have a safe and fun holiday!

Same to you and all the gang.

I'm doing a sequel to Home Alone absent the crooks and snow. I prepared an

Mercedes content: my new block heater and Advance Auto battery are doing a

[MBZ] OT: Gatwick drone incident update

2018-12-25 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes

Pair freed without charge in London airport drones probe

the weekend (AFP Photo/Ben STANSALL)

London (AFP) - A man and a woman arrested over the drone disruption that
brought Christmas getaway flights to a standstill at London's Gatwick
Airport were released without charge on Sunday, police said.

A 47-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman from the town of Crawley, near
Britain's second-busiest airport, were arrested on Saturday.

The police swooped after three days of disruption from Wednesday to Friday,
affecting 140,000 passengers.

"Both people have fully co-operated with our enquiries and I am satisfied
that they are no longer suspects in the drone incidents at Gatwick," Sussex
Police detective chief superintendent Jason Tingley said in a statement.

A damaged drone has been found near the airfield perimeter, he added.

Drones were sighted buzzing around the airfield more than 50 times, forcing
the government to bring in specialist military resources to help counter
the threat.

The dangers posed by drones include the possibility of a device smashing
into a passenger plane or being sucked up into an engine where its highly
flammable lithium battery could cause a catastrophe.

"Our inquiry continues at a pace to locate those responsible for the drone
incursions, and we continue to actively follow lines of investigation,"
said Tingley.

"We ask for the public's continued support by reporting anything
suspicious, contacting us with any information in relation to the drone
incidents at Gatwick."

The airport has offered a £50,000 ($63,000, 56,000 euro) reward for
information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for
the disruption.

- Damaged drone recovered -

Tingley said a damaged drone was found on Saturday close to the airport
perimeter.

"That is, of course, a significant line of inquiry," he told the BBC.

"We are not back to square one. Whilst these two people have been in
custody, we have a number of lines of inquiry and persons of interest.

"We are still progressing those lines of inquiry, including house-to-house
inquiries around the sightings of the drone."

Under recently-introduced laws in Britain, drones cannot be flown near
aircraft or within a kilometre (about half a mile) of an airport, or at an
altitude of over 400 feet (122 metres).

Violators face up to five years in prison for endangering an aircraft.

Gatwick, around 30 miles (50 kilometres) south of the British capital, is
the eighth-busiest airport in Europe.

On its website, Gatwick said its runway was open and it aimed to run a full
schedule over the weekend.

Passengers were warned to expect some delays and cancellations as their
airport tried to recover its operations.

"Safety is Gatwick's top priority and we are grateful for passengers'
continued patience as we work to get them to their final destination in
time for Christmas," the airport said.

The main opposition Labour Party has called for an independent inquiry
after accusing the government of failing to act on the risks posed by
drones.

But a Department for Transport spokesman dismissed claims of missed
opportunities to prevent the Gatwick incident as "a combination of nonsense
and gross misrepresentation".

Now will the keystone Kops reimburse the falsely arrested folks?   In
jolly ol engeland, they are guilty unless they can prove themselves
innocent.   If they sue for false arrest, are the koppers also guilty
unless they can prove themselves innocent?   Inquiring minds want to
know.   Everyone heard they were arrested, but few will hear the
exoneration.   My guess is that the koppers are not held guilty, and it
may not be possible under the crown to sue for false arrest.

Sadly, in this country's coup, we are presumed guilty unless we can
prove something that did not happen, didn't happen.  All we have to do
is look at the record of Andrew Weissmann, and what was done to Brett
Kavanaugh to see this is true.  We stood up for rights when king george
ignored rights and pleas for redress.   We won, and implemented the
Constitution.  Our coup leaders believe we should have no rights.

My oxycodone are keeping my spirits high! I have become comfortably numb!
Woke up at 630 and took 2 morning pills at 7 to get the day started and just
woke up again... I’m not sure how or why people get addicted to this stuff, I
feel it takes the edge off the pain but otherwise it just makes me sleepy.
Maybe it affects people differently, or they just like being sleepy.

[MBZ] Happy Rich!

2018-12-25 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Glad you can get around with your walker.   We are supposed to have some
sun.  It was out, but now is obscured.   That stuff is highly
addictive.  Be careful.   I was given a Rx for it a couple weeks ago.  I
did not fill it.  The pain was no big deal.  I see no reason why the Rx
should have been issued in the first place.

The pushers (medical professionals) often tell me to take  acetaminophen
but I never do.  Nothing ever hurts as much as what I've already been
through.  I used to take aspirin, but seldom do now.

An olympic medallist turned dentist told me years ago to try letting him
drill without novacaine.  I did, and seldom let a dentist use it now.
The majority of "pain" caused by a dentist is our mental reaction to the
sound of the drill.  It is not actual pain.  The only pain is if the
dentist's drill hits the nerve, and that can be controlled by squeezing
the chair handles.  Pain is mostly a mental condition and can be
overcome by mental control.

I don't like that stuff, I'll use it to help me sleep the first night or three,
and then switch to Tylenol as needed. A thirty day supply usually ends up
mostly flushed down the toilet. I'm rather feel the pain during daytime, that
is the way my body tells me what is ok and where the boundary is.

A relative once had a surgery and was hospitalized for several days after, and
had a morphine drip that was self-controlled. Pain too much? Take a hit of
morphine. They said it was very easy to see how addictive that drug is, the
nearly instant floaty pain free worry free world that arrived with every dose.

[MBZ] OT fixing a light fixture, phenolic socket or porcelain?

2018-12-25 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
We've got three ceiling fixtures, brass and glass, that use candelabra
bulbs. The sockets are phenolic, really cheap, and 24 years old now, and
are failing. Each lamp has a three-socket pigtail.

Looking on line, I can get an identical set up for about $4 plus shipping.

https://www.antiquelampsupply.com/3-light-e12-candelabra-socket-harness-set-each-with-phenolic-ring-18-2-wire-leads.html#frequent

I'm thinking about switching over to a porcelain base at more than three
times the cost, but maybe those will be higher quality and won't fail
during my lifetime?

https://www.antiquelampsupply.com/porcelain-threaded-candelabra-socket-with-hickey-metal-ring-and-12-wire-leads.html

I've got to check the wire heat ratings on the porcelain, they may not be
high enough?

True phenolic should not degrade.  I suspect you have a plastic,
possibly a thermoplastic, but not true phenolic.  You could order in one
phenolic to compare.  Ceramic will be the best.  If you plan to use it
forever and pass it on to SWMBette, then ceramic.  If another 24 years
will do, then phenolic.

Also consider, will you want to convert to LED within the next 24 years?
If so, then phenolic.

Don’t flush pharmaceuticals, please. Your local pharmacist will gladly take
them to dispose of them.

I saw an internal report on the pharmaceuticals that show up in our county’s
wastewater treatment system and it was pretty frightening. Granted, many of
these are trace amounts, but there’s no system that can take them out of the
effluent stream, so they end up in the outflow from the treatment plants.

[MBZ] Good Drink, was: Merry Christmas!

2018-12-25 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes wrote on 12/25/18 10:33 AM:

good food and drink.

Greg

Reminds me of good friends, good food and good drink, and then good
movies with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hare.  One of Maureen's pet
projects was the Foynes Flying Boat Museum.  So for good coffee to
drink, here is "THE Recipe!"

(The Foynes Irish Coffee Glass is more or less like a 6 oz wine glass.)

 **The Original Irish Coffee Recipe

**Step One: **Preheat your Foynes Irish coffee glass by filling it with
boiling water for 5 seconds, then pour the water out.**

**Step Two:**Add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and a good measure of Irish
whiskey into the warmed glass.**

**Step Three:**Fill the glass to within 1 cm of the brim with hot,
strong black coffee. Stir well to dissolve all the brown sugar.**

**Step Four:**Carefully pour lightly whipped cream over the back of a
spoon so that it floats on top of the coffee.**

**Step Five:**Do not stir after adding the cream; optimal flavor comes
from drinking the coffee and Irish whiskey through the cream.

At Foynes, they pour Powers.  If you are a Republican, then you pour
Jameson's.  If you lean loyalist, then you pour Bushmills.   But both
loyalist and Republican Irish agree on drinking ale and whisky.

[MBZ] Intriguing 220SE 4 speed coupe on BAT

2018-12-25 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Far from perfect, and with a jarring blue/red color combo. YET- price is
already at $9k and I can sense the hysteria building. Anyone care to make
any prediction as to the final bid price, and whether it meets the
reserve? I'm guessing $21K which is way more than it's worth IMO due to
all the restoration issues This will also fail to meet the seller's
reserve.

Merry Christmas all you knuckleheads. Hope everyone is enjoying time with
whomever you choose to be with.
Since it’s perfect outdoors (70 degrees F, sunny) and since the children won’t
be here until this evening, I think I will go all Martha on my beater Subaru.
While installing the new rear struts on Saturday, I was poking at the very
rusty exhaust components and I managed to snap the coupling between the
downpipes and the cat in two. Now I sound like a stockcar when driving around.

Won’t be flushing (im on septic anyway) I’m gonna sell any leftovers out on the
road, get a few dineros to buy Benz parts!

Seriously I figured the first coupla days are about all I’m going to take that
stuff, and probably not too frequently. They said I couldn’t take NSAIDs as
they interfere with something else, I vaguely remember Tylenol would be OK but
I probably won’t even do that. If I need to I can ax Dr Boychild and he can fix
me up. Plus that oxy interferes with the proper functioning of the waste
processing system, kills your sensations of impending relief requirements, so I
have stuff to help that along. Had a whole cocktail of stuff this morning and a
blood thinner injection 2x/day which is not too bad.

Fun times, I was really hoping to get under the SL today (or Sunday afternoon
actually). Oh well, an incentive to get fully functional...

My buddy is bringing shrimp and grits over soon for lunch!! Some benefits to
being a semi-cripple!

Poor Brett - he's been given an indefinite time-out on the SUPREME COURT.
Sad...

BTW, there may never have been a drone attack after all.

Re: [MBZ] Merry Christmas!

2018-12-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Same to you and all MBZ ers.

Santa came in the form of 5 never used OE Fuchs 15" wheels, 4 of them with
Kumho Ecstar 225/50s with stickers still on the tires. Neighbor is a
retired EE who got into 6.3 and 6.9 cars. He recently sold one to kuwait
and one to German reseller, both for record money as he had them very well
sorted and they were low mile single owner california cars before he bought
them. Anyway he had no use for the wheels and metal center caps. They will
look good on the 123 wagon. Convenient as current tires are, well, tired.
Probably pick up some new lug bolts to complete the look.

Peace,
Karl

Yah set a goal and stick with it. Maybe a two week taper to motrin. And
Norco might suffice if you are otherwise opioid naive. Just dont take more
than 8 per day of either norco or percocet or you will hit the 3g tylenol
limit.

Naproxen sodium is the only thing I take. With the wife having cancer and
multiple surgeries for various stuff, she’s Dr. FeelGood and has all sorts of
stuff to select from. I’m pretty anti-pharma unless it’s something I need to
fight infection, for example. Otherwise, I tough it out. I just don’t like
the way that stuff makes me feel.

Apparently the OE metal caps are a collector type item. About 50-75 apiece
on bay of fleas. Included with purchase in this case.

Not cheap but the wheels are over 500 a copy from mercedes last time I
checked about 5 years ago. I do not think you can get metal center caps at
all.

With tires and caps saved at a few hundred per wheel. Sometimes the stars
line up. Completely unnecessary but still cool. Car doesnt owe me anything
after 20 years. Might as well dress her up a little. I always keep good
rubber on as cheap insurance, and she was due for that anyway.

I waited for years for LED bulbs to be made which will replace 100 Watt
incandescents. I recently discovered them at Costco: 120 VAC LED bulbs
which put out 1600 lumens made by FEIT. I think their part number is
CEOM100/930/4(N).

In illumining our "kitchen" area, we have substituted four LED bulbs,
drawing 70 W total for twelve F096/741/ECO bulbs labeled 52 W. That's
624 W for the bulbs -- who knows what it takes to run the ballasts!
If one guesses 20 W, the total for the fluorescents approaches 900 W,
more than an order of magnitude than the LED bulbs.

Re: [MBZ] OT fixing a light fixture, phenolic socket or porcelain? now LEDs

2018-12-25 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Yeah I've been putting the Costco bulbs in everywhere too, at least
lights that are not on dimmers.  The warm white gives a pleasant light.
I got some LED floods too, maybe 100W? they were pretty cheap for a 6
pack, while not rated "outdoors" the housings are plastic and say water
resistant or some such.  They put out really good bright light, I am
surprised.  The heavy glass halogens burn out quickly, those things
don't last despite what the boxes say, and are a lot more expensive.

In the kitchen fixtures I made I put in ceramic GU10 sockets (banggood)
and LED mini-floods (banggood too), I got 3 kinds of different color
temps and output.  Some of them have burned out now after 4 years, and
some blink, I guess it is the power supply circuits in them that fry,
whatever they are.  Anyway the bulbs were a lot cheaper than anything
else here, so I guess I can put up with changing them every now and
then, I bought a bunch of spares.  They are all really bright, if I turn
on any set (I have 4 banks around the kitchen) it is way brighter than
daylight, which I was kinda looking for in prepping and cooking.  I have
halogen GU10s in tracks on the high peaked ceiling to wash it, and some
recessed above one set of counters, they are pretty much enough for
anything else.  I ran a LED string about 25ft long on top of the
cabinets facing up to the little ceiling over them and under the loft
area, that was warm white LEDs too, and that looks nice as just sort of
a night light.

I bought a bunch of single RGB LEDs and Arduinos and remote controllers
I was going to build strips to put under the cabinets to light the
counters there, I never got them set up but I thought it would be kinda
cool to set different "mood" colors.  I ran some wiring to hook them
into switches that control some USB/power outlets that put out 2A on the
USB sockets, that's more than enough to run a whole string of them.  I
put Ethernet cable in the walls to connect them.  Maybe in my enforced
downtime I can get to that fairly passive project, I have all that stuff
in a project box somewhere.

Maybe when we get settled in North Carolina, I will get some of those
floods. We chose the 3000 K bulbs for our "kitchen" area and table lamps.
I bought what we needed and when Costco had a special which reduced the

equivalents and one six-pack of 60 W equivalents.

[MBZ] That recent discussion of bulb-out relays ...

2018-12-25 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I just ran across an email from Dave Meimann about the subject.

Craig

Begin forwarded message:

Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 22:08:58 -0700
From: "Dave M."
To: merce...@striplin.net
Subject: Re: [MBZ] Light and relays

On most cars you can modify the bulb-out module (N7 on a W124) to
ignore the headlights, and still function for all the *other* bulbs.
It's pretty obvious when you lose a headlight anyway. I have my module
modified so it works normally with my headlight relays. On the W124 it
normally monitors low & high beam headlights, but does NOT monitor fog
lights. I haven't a clue what the W202 does.

The JC Whitney high-wattage bulbs are highly suspect and are very
likely to be cheap offshore junk. All bulbs (of a given wattage) are
NOT equal, even among well known brands. If you're serious about
seeing at night, stick with the proven top performers - usually
Philips and Osram (not Sylvania). I've got Philips Rally 100/90's in my
cars now and they're mind-boggling. Just picked up some of the new
Osram Hypers, which put out far more lumens per watt than other H4
bulbs, but haven't tried them yet.

For "good" bulbs, buy from Dan Stern, or Peter at .

I'm not really picking on you, Craig, 'cause your earlier email
stated, "1600 lumens" but I get really annoyed with the "watts
equivalent" rating because the light output for a 100 W
incandescent is NOT standard! I have chosen to ignore that number
as marketing hype - which it usually is - and instead look at
lumens.

A lumen is a measure of the total light energy output (as
perceived by human eyes - it is a weighted scale) with no regard
for direction or distance to what is being lite. It is, in my
opinion, the right way to compare lamp types because adding a
reflector, or shifting the light output to one side only will not
change the lumen output.

In practice, if I would like a bit more light than my 500 lumen 40
watt incandescent puts out, I can look at all the choices of 700
lumen lamps and pick the one with the lowest watt rating if I want
to save on operating costs.

In summary, I wish the packaging would _decrease_ the confusion
and report the light output based on a light output measurement -
not a comparison to the power consumption of of a light of
arbitrary efficiency.

When saving running the fluorescent lights for slightly more 48 hours will
pay the difference between the bulbs at $9 and at $15, one quickly opts
for the $15.
