Re: [MBZ] I can not believe how stupid people are
If we still have the Internet and virtual processes used during COVID, do we really need markets and exchanges in big cities? Why can't all that be virtual from wherever? With online banking, investing, etc. I think we are close to that now. There is, however, a serious drawback in reduced social contact: https://biggeekdad.com/2016/12/the-millennial-question/ The traditional retirement investment was to have kids who can take care of you in old age. If we, as a nation, continue to have too few children it won't matter how much gold or dollars the old geezers have; there will be no care-givers to hire, at least not American ones. -Original Message- From: Allan Streib via Mercedes Subject: Re: [MBZ] I can not believe how stupid people are I get the sentiment but we need both unless we revert to pure subsistence living. Re: [MBZ] OT: $800 MacBook with iPhone CPU?
For Windows 10 I've given up on using menus for anything. I just hit the windows key and start typing what I want. I've gotta say its not so bad, no searching through menus, just let Windows find it for me. Actually my favorite OS right now is Windows Server 2016, actually 2019 seems mostly the same from a UI perspective. Very old school look, minimal GUI, more like WinXP than Win10. Much better than 2012 which was like Win8. Too bad its very expensive although you could use the free trial for half a year at a time. -Curt On Thursday, December 3, 2020, 3:57:21 PM EST, Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote: On 2020-12-03 15:18, Scott Ritchey via Mercedes wrote: > I never saw any benefit to those stupid boxes in Win10. > AND it's not worth my time to learn a new GUI every time some liberal > arts > clown at Micro$oft has a wild hair. Too many issues right now with COVID etc. Plus, that is a nice car but not exactly what I want. I have the old 115 300D. If I were going to look for another old MB it would be the bigger turbo diesel sedan, the 300SD, or a 123 turbo diesel sedan. but I am not likely to do that either. I don't really want to give up the one I have and unlike some of you folks, I don't have a "vast estate" so I have no place to park another one. App store has Parallels and other VM software, so probably able to run what you like. I am thinking that with ARM chips, once the OS goes native, that spells the death of hackintosh. Only able to run the OS on proprietary hardware on a chip. I did contemplate the 16” MacBook Pro, but wanted more than the specs seemed to allow for ram and storage. It is a Tech worker from the left coast. Not a functional human in the manner of older tech workers who actually got into the nuts and bolts of code and physical hardware. This is a Lego programmer or drone who has no interest in knowing how “things” work, I am guessing, based on neighbors of mine who were slaves at M$, Gargle, Azaman, or Fakebuk. It was a miracle they were able to make it to the shuttle bus each morning. Most of them had crawled out of mama’s basement, got in early enough that stock options were offered, then purchased homes based on the assumption the stock would vest and banks were tossing out cash like it was confetti. One good aspect of the idiots on the block was the constant flow of service providers (plumbing, electrical, cleaning, yard tending) Employing others to do the daily jobs these knobs were too clueless to figure out. On a sadder note, the idiots also tended to create unsafe conditions because the stove tended to mystify them. A few household fires had the station down the block rolling up with lights and sirens wailing any time of the day or night. With the residents from 30 years back, the ambulance was in tow, since the Silent Generation tended to be in poor health, but knew well how to keep their homes functional. clay I have no pronouns please do not refer to me. > On Dec 2, 2020, at 7:31 PM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > mailto:mercedes@okiebenz.com>> wrote: > > Probably from Portland and expects the gummint to deal with everything for > him, take care of him and his needs. That said my last Macbook lasted 4 years almost exactly, I think it was murdered by my road warrior life at that point. An equivalent HP or Dell would have been $1000 cheaper and, based on previous experience lasted at least as long. If you don't resell then the resale value doesn't mean much. I've actually still got the first HP laptop this employer gave me back in 2005. It was used (none too gently) when I got it and it still works fine although the battery is totally croaked. I keep it around for an older video editing application I really like that only runs in WinXP which it is totally adequate for. That machine has done a LOT of work both for my employer and side work for me, even after it was "retired". Its also the best machine I've ever had for my old Agfa scanner. -Curt On Thursday, December 3, 2020, 2:03:24 PM EST, Jim Cathey wrote: You have to treat your computer expenses like you might treat automotive expenses. Microsoft also has Windows for the ARM architecture (Surface Pro). Would not be beyond belief if they get that ported to the Apple silicon. Apple gives away their OS. They don't make any money on it, they make money on hardware and the app store. So IMO they don't really care if people want to run something else. They aren't going to go out of their way to support it maybe, but I doubt they'll stop it. If it sells a few percent more machines it's a win for them. Efforts are underway to port Linux and other OSes to the new Macs, which reportedly blow Intel out of the water on performance and power use. IIRC there is some sort of Windows available on Raspberry pi although its a bit of a hack, so Microsoft has some code that will run on ARM anyway. I hate what Apple has done to their laptops, their charge to be the thinnest, lightest, "coolest" (and I don't mean temperature), has given us less capable hardware. Until I know for sure they're making something better I'm not giving them any money again. Example: My touchbar macbook was slower out of the box than the retina Macbook it replaced. The keyboard sucks and the touchbar is a waste of time. Battery life is worse and it doesn't have any *&%#! ports. For doing any real work it sucks. Apple has burned me as a customer and it'll take a lot to earn me back. -Curt On Thursday, December 3, 2020, 1:59:09 PM EST, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: Apple chose the ARM in the first place (Newton) because it was the clear win in MIPS/mW, which meant the best possible battery life. Re: [MBZ] OT: $800 MacBook with iPhone CPU?
I've had Windows running in VirtualBox on a Mac for going on 8 years now, it works pretty well. Newer versions of VirtualBox are better. I suspect VMWare would be better still but VB is free... I spent last weekend working on my parent's Win8 box. Yes, Win8 flat. It took some figuring but I finally found out how to update it to 8.1 which greatly improved stability. Also I think the "hybrid shutdown" BS had screwed them, when I first powered it up it couldn't get out of its own way, after a reboot it was mostly fine, after uninstalling Norton AV it was pretty good. Norton was a strange one, it claimed to be expired but was eating up 30+% of the CPU and 50+% of the disk. The machine is a dual core processor with 4GB of RAM. Looks like I can make it quad core and 16GB for about $150. That and the service call will be a good start to a birthday present for my mom. Heck I should probably drop an SSD in there and upgrade it to Win10 at the same time, it'll be like a whole new machine. -Curt On Thursday, December 3, 2020, 1:45:57 PM EST, Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote: On 2020-12-03 13:21, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: > I meant to say Virtualize, of course you can emulate. > While I was writing the previous message I was thinking "I suppose > emulation is an option..." I don't think a wrecker could have negotiated the slippery slope to pull it out, that Georgia clay is really greasy when wet, esp with a bunch of wet leaves on top of it. Maybe when it dries out some I will talk to the kid about doing that. The kid lives an hour away from where the car is at his step-grandmother's place so it is a PITA for him to deal with it all. I'll keep in touch with him about it, maybe he can figure it out from his end. I don't think he realized how hard it would be, wasn't his thing dealing with cars, he was just facilitating getting rid of them. The kid was really nice so no issues on that aspect, he said he will try to figure something out. It was an interesting area where the car was. Lots looked like 2-3acres, a lot of fancy houses in the area. It was a pretty area. This place had a 60s house with like 2 additions on it, the lot was nice esp with the creek, but the house looked like a tear-down, just sorta run down and the additions were sorta half-assed. Maybe some serious renovations would help. Whoever lives there also rescues cats and dogs, there were several dog pens and cats all over the place, it was just kinda redneck in amongst a fairly upscale-looking area. Whatever, not my place... As far as winching the thing, there was really no good way to do that. The issue was getting the truck on a stable place to do it, both vehicles would just have been sliding around. I had a come-along, I guess I could have used various trees as anchors but that would have been a LOT of work, and I am not even sure how I would have gotten it to where I could have loaded it. It was just not a very good situation. The other cars were pulled out before the rain, I could have done that too with the truck too if dry but not with it being so wet. I have thought about a winch for the truck and trailer, one of these days maybe... I went over to the tire shop this morning to swap out the wrong spare they gave me, the guy couldn't find mine, I guess someone else will discover the error at some point. He ordered a new tire/wheel which will be in tomorrow and he will give me that so that will sort out the issue. So, the cheep old Benz bottom feeder adventures continue... --FT On 12/2/20 7:19 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes wrote: Probably could have paid a wrecker $100 to winch it out so you can load it. Apparently the tire shop gave me someone else's wheel/tire, the wheel looked just like mine but the bolt pattern was bigger. H. So there is an exit a mile down, the 3-wheeled trailer looked like the missing hub/drum won't drag, so I go on down there and get off. Nowhere GA. I look on my maps app and there is a tire shop a few miles down some country road, so I head there. I get there and there is an old garage in ruins, I guess that ain't no tar shop no mo. So then the next nearest one is another 6 or 7 miles away, so I head there on back country roads (rural Georgia is interesting). I come to a sizable town and find the tar shop, get that tire replaced and another that is looking a bit iffy while I am at it. Nice guys at the place so that was a positive. Then hit a Tractor Supply to buy an actual spare wheel/tire so I have one in case of another mishap. An adventure! I get to where the car is, 3hr later than I had figured, sort of semi-rural area, nice properties and houses around. I get in there, park the truck and trailer, no car anywhere. So I get out and look around, it is sitting down about 20ft below where I am parked, the back of the lot slopes down to a creek and the car is down there. I know some people like that - they are from the East coast - always renters, never dealt with anything themselves - just call the landlord. Also, he might have only lived in all electric houses - they "just work". On Wed, Dec 2, 2020 at 10:34 PM Allan Streib via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I know a guy like this.
