It is more than a little slop at this point so that is what I want to resolve.
I know they have a bit of play but this one is getting a little concerning
after 350k or 400k miles. If it goes another 50k tighter that should be good at
least another 20years at the rate I drive it.

IIRC they need to have a little slop in the steering. If you tighten
the steering box up too much it just wears faster.

[MBZ] Pleasantly weird — $900E500 in limp mode

2021-03-11 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I started the car up this evening to charge the battery and aired up the tars.
I fooled around with the radio While I was sitting there and found a Logic7
setting. It has a Harmon Kardon system. WOW does it sound good. My 05E320 wagon
does not have this and it sounds pretty good but this car is way better.

So anyway I thought why not take it out just to warm it up and get the fluids
circulating. Going out the driveway I noticed it was shifting ok. H. I did
some manual shifting 1-7 and it was shifting ok still. H. Got out on the
road, stomped it, it kicked down into first and ran like a scalded rat shifting
fine up to 80 or so which was maybe 4th gear. Backed off and it shifted ok
again. Did a little more enthusiastic motoring and it was shifting fine.
Hm.

So this makes me think there might just be some loose connector somewhere that
is throwing the thing into limp mode as it did for the PO. Or some other fault
that is causing that to happen. The CEL is on, when I checked it before there
were a coupla faults in the airmatic and something else I don’t recall, nothing
serious. I’ll check it again tomorrow in the daylight.

I drove it twice before I brought it home, the second time after I bought it I
thought it was shifting fine. Drove it once after I dragged it home and it was
limping.

Wouldn’t it be something if it is just some minor thing. Really nice (but needs
a good interior detailing) car $900. Oh, and this thing is WOWWOWOW! when you
mash the go pedal. I’m liking it. I’m not sure I want to drive it any
distance if it decides to kakk again, don’t have plates on it either.

Re: [MBZ] 2004 E-500 4matic - 123k miles - $3,800

2021-03-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I bought this pretty nice 04E500 recently for $900, the transmission is
in limp mode, although one time I drove it the thing shifted OK, weird.
Code seems to be for conductor plate.  It has airmatic but is not a
4matic, it is throwing a code for the RR shock but it seems to be
working OK, might just have a leak.  I'll probably open up the tranny
and check on the conductor plate and connectors, change fluid and filter
and see what is going on.

As far as 4m goes, my 05E320 wagon with 4m makes kinda gronching noises
in reverse, I will open it up at some point and see if it a bearing or
chain or what.  You can buy the whole bearing and chain rebuild kit for
like $250 if I recall, and doesn't seem to be a big job.  Would be
interesting to see what this guy had done and what his complaint is.  If
it something that seems serious, I wouldn't go much more than $2k on the
car, he probably wouldn't entertain that.  But good for him on the honesty.

Re: [MBZ] now S600

2021-03-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
W140 chassis cars are very complex, probably the most complex cars of their
time. Multiple independent systems that do all sorts of things, like soft close
doors, control interior lighting, ACC, etc., etc.

That being said, they’re not all that bad to work on. Since each system is
independent of the others, when something like your soft close feature stops
working, you’re not stuck on the side of the road - you just have to slam to
door to get it to shut.

The V12 models bring another reality of complexity into view, as they’re
essentially double everything (or thereabouts) that’s on the M119 V8s. So when
one MAF goes bad, you’re betting the other won’t be far behind.

This is where it gets ugly, as the costs involved to maintain these are the
typical downfall of most owners, and the reason why these wonderful cars often
get parked and abandoned.

I’m not suggesting they are trouble prone - the W140 chassis cars are quite
robust and run well - I had several that exceeded 350k miles without any major
issues. They’re just very complex and require someone who has the time and
interest to maintain them.

Re: [MBZ] now S600

2021-03-11 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
If you can buy it cheap enough, you can take your time with correcting
its faults.

It is not likely that there is a line up of potential buyers for it.
Worst case scenario, it becomes tasteful yard art?

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes G63 omg - $79,000

2021-03-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That and as a rule those tires with the low sidewalls don’t typically have
warranties on them, that is, they don’t guarantee them for a set number of
miles, it’s basically, you buy it and hope they last.

That’s why I moved away from these on Mrs. Dan’s SL500. A set of tires was
$1200, and she was going through them in 2 years or less. Some careful research
with a tire size calculator and I was able to get very similar tires that were
common sizes and had real warranties. They last longer, too, as the compound
seems to be much harder.

I had to get a new tire on the Dodge yesterday. A friend runs the local "Tire
Warehouse", while I waited I wandered around looking at the tires and found
some massive wide tires with thin sidewalls, they were like 295/55R22 or
something. I asked and my friend told me that those are "Profit tires". People
like me buying normal tires is what keeps the doors of the shop open but those
stupid tires are the ones that "Make the numbers" and get bonuses for the sales
team. He said there's something like 80% markup on those...
