[MBZ] Well that was easy — locks on CL500

[Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes]

There is a pneumatic pump that both blows and sucks to open/close the doors and 
trunk. German electromechanical engineering at its finest. 20A fuse was blown. 
It was working then it quit so a new fuse cured it. The key fob now opens and 
closes doors and opens trunk. (I need to order a new fob shell as this one is 
worn out).  I used the blade key earlier to open driver door at Costco which of 
course set off the alarm which was loud as hell. I should kill that thing. 

BTW I ordered a 250 piece fuse kit off Amazon that showed up just before I 
started this job (which was somewhat contorted because I had locked the 
passenger door and the fuse panel is behind the passenger seat under the rear 
seat and I had to climb in from the driver side, it is tight in the back) so I 
could CHANGE THE FUSE. the kit has a bunch of the bigger blade fuses and the 
smaller ones in various sizes. Should keep me going for awhile. It was not 
expensive, good to have around in the tool kit. 

I’m getting error messages for lights, some of which appear to be working. 
H. Some for bulbs in the tail lights which are not intuitively removable. 
I’ll have to research that. Also says a low beam headlight but it is working. I 
wonder if someone put in some funky bulbs. And the switch must be a replacement 
as it does not pull out for fogs and rear bright taillight. Weird. 

This car has headlight squirters that appear to be more like car wash sprayers. 
I think the nozzles are buggered up as they sprayed the hood and fenders. Not 
that I need them but interesting feature.

Some years ago we spent about 10days touring around seeing a lot of the 
ancient sites, stayed in little towns and hotels and ate at local 
restaurants.  It was really wonderful.  Amazingly enough every place we 
stayed the innkeeper either had retired from some business (restaurant, 
hotel) in the US and had kids working there now, or had some relative 
living in the states. They loved talking about the States and speaking 
English, and were really nice.  One guy at a little place in Korinthos 
had a Greek Hoosier accent, I remarked on that, he said he had been in 
Indianapolis for 30 years with a restaurant, came back "home" to Greece 
and bought this little hotel, one son who was maybe 19 was working there 
to learn the trade, another was back in Indy with the restaurant or 
something.  It was great. The food was amazing, the wines were excellent 
(well, except for the homemade stuff, I bought a 2L bottle of something 
at a market in some little town, some home brew, and it was awful!).  
I'd live there.


On another note, back in the 80s I had a friend in Boston who was from 
Athens, he was supposedly a professor at the University, and apparently 
was getting paid by the university, for what he was never clear about, 
but he would have to go back every 3months or so for a week and put in 
an appearance.  I got the sense that a job was sorta a job for life, you 
had to pretend to "work" and could get paid.  His wife was something in 
the consulate in Boston, not sure what, and she got paid big money for 
the overseas "hardship" assignment, they had an apartment in one of the 
tall buildings downtown, the Pru or Hancock I forget which, which I'm 
sure the consulate was paying for. They lived a really nice life.  He 
had this Jaguar XJ6 I think he had shipped over, it was like a 78 or so, 
BRG/biscuit interior, very low miles, beautiful shape.  I told him if he 
ever wanted to sell to let me know.  So at some point he says he sold 
it, I ask why he didn't tell me, he says OH I asked M (my now-ex wife) 
if I was still interested and she said no. He sold it for next to 
nothing. Bugger.

The rears are Extensa type 275/40R18.  Looks like they also have the 
front size 245/45R18, at least what's on there now.  They have several 
sizes.  Same front size is $174 from Discount Tire Direct, $173 from El 
Mercado de Wal with free shipping, not too bad I guess.  Taxes and 
mounting and all the other nonsense will push them to $225 or so I bet.  
45kmi rating. There's a whole range of sizes the site says will fit 
these particular wheels, 265/40 were the originals on rear but 275/40 is 
one of the additional sizes that will fit.

Sure there is political corruption in Greece as there is here but rampant voter 
fraud is virtually unheard of. Voter ID is required in Greece as it is in the 
rest of Europe. In Greece your vote counts. Here on the other hand? If you 
don’t have secure elections, your country is a banana republic. We are a banana 
republic...

Sure the tax system is problematic but they have largely fixed that. But at 
least it is not weaponized against one political group or the other like it is 
here- Lois Lerner. Anyway, I don’t want to get too political here. I’ve lived 
in both countries, and all I can say is that if you don’t need to make a living 
in Greece, the quality of life there is many orders of magnitude better than it 
is here. Not just my Greek opinion, ask Kari!

When I moved to a standard compound with a mileage warranty, the wear dropped 
precipitously. In fact, the set on the back of the car was still on it when I 
sold it, and they had upwards of 30k on the clock with lots of tread depth left.

Wow, we've been under $5.99 for 3 or so weeks. I saw $5.77 yesterday and Gas 
Buddy suggests I'm right. The spread for the 10 miles around me is $5.79 down 
to $5.29 which is, I think, a $0.30 drop at the low end in the last two weeks.

the Tucker's D4 and 1 out of Angie's Golf. 2x lawnmower batteries and probably 
more I can't remember.
The Pisten Bully batteries in particular were pooched, I put them on the 
charger for 3 days and they would barely crank the engine with it warm out. 
After a week on the Minder they cranked for several minutes while we were 
troubleshooting a fuel delivery issue. I should probably go snag them out again 
and let them sit on maintenance for another month...

I know a guy who drove a Jetta to work for over a year with no plate on 
it, no insurance.
Union welder, so he drove to whatever job the union sent him to that 
week.


On the other hand, this guy was obeying the traffic laws, and then when 
he stopped at a corner, a cop blindside tackled him off his bike because 
the cop didn't like where he had his plate mounted.

Pick your state and Google "EZ pass *state name*" Each state gives you a 
different incentive. I chose NH because it gives a discount on all NH tolls. MA 
only discounts a couple tunnels in Boston that I rarely use, ME discounts after 
a certain number of trips per month that I'll never hit so NH made the most 
sense for us.

I-40 isn’t a toll road anywhere I've driven on it.

You’ve got all those rural state highways that are toll. I remember when I was 
driving the 2002 E320 home from your neighborhood and  I hit one of the little 
automated toll collection baskets getting on to one of them. I didn’t have any 
change, so I just drove through. Lights and bells in the rear view, but I never 
got a nasty letter or anything.

A lot of places don't have a cash lane anymore. They take a photo of your plate 
and send you a bill for the toll, plus a "convenience fee."

No, it’s fraught with political patronage. That, and partisan polarization 
isn’t ideological as it is here, it’s strategic, as in the parties trying to 
hold the state and control it’s resources. In other words, the party in power 
uses inducements to try and and recruit non-ideological voters that are 
ambivalent. Party competition is based on populist ideals (the rich versus the 
poor, for example.) This is what happened in 2012 when extreme pluralism took 
place and fringe groups gained a significant number of seats in Parliament.

Much of their fiscal problems revolve around these issues - the old 
sociopolitical arrangement where voters and politicians coordinated their 
actions, with individuals benefitting from the state at the expense of public 
good.

Shall we talk about the tax system and how well it works?

No place is perfect. It’s all a matter of what’s most important to the 
individual.

I think these wheels are from a later car. maybe a CL55 or CL600 or 
06CL500.  I will have to pull them off to see what they actually are.  
They are 18" and might be 8.5" or 9.5" or both if staggered. The rears 
"look" wider than the front, 275/40R18 tires, the fronts have 245/45R18 
so maybe that signifies staggered wheel sizes.  Different cheap tire 
types front ("Achilles" whatever those are) and back (Toyo) but they 
both have decent tread so I guess they will be OK until I decide to 
spend $800+ or more on new tires...


The wheels look somewhat pimpish but not too bad on the car, I think 
they go with the style well.  A little flashy but WTH, I am a flashy 
guy!  The woman I got the car from, whose son had it, said he really 
liked the wheels and that is why she bought it for him.  (I told her I 
wish I had a mama like her!)


Like these that come in 8.5 and 9.5, says they are for 06CL500 so maybe 
they were put on this 02 at a later time

I noticed the front roters are drilled, I wonder if these were stock on 
the 500 or from a 55 or 600.  I'll have to look at the calibers too, see 
what they are like.  In general the car looks like it was pretty well 
maintained, generally clean and not really many issues, some of which 
are resolving themselves as I drive it, go figure.  106kmi is very low 
for a 20yo car. The ABC apparently did not like sitting for a long time, 
it is getting sorted out as fluid circulates in the system.  The seats 
have the sliding forward bottom which makes them very comfortable for 
this tall driver.  The lumbar pumps look to be inop as well as the butt 
cooling, something to look into at a later time although I could use 
some butt cooling on these hot summer days, esp with the black leather.  
The rear headrest folding is not working, looks like that is a pneumatic 
pump (go figure, Germans...) which might be the same pump that drives 
the trunk opener (Germans...).  The bottom wood on the steering wheel is 
loose, kinda weird, it looks like there was some sort of filler stuff 
inside or something that has come out.  No idea what that's about, I 
guess I could squirt something in there to keep it from moving around.


I took out the battery that was in it and charged it up, put it back in 
yesterday and it seemed to work so will see how it holds up. Unclear why 
it kept dying but maybe it was going bad or there was something in the 
car draining it. Had no issues with the smaller battery I put in it to 
get it running.


I did the "paint correction" on the roof last evening, 4 steps, still 
some scratches in it but looks a whole lot better, very shinny!  I'm not 
sure how far to go on the initial compounding to take out scratches, 
don't want to go through the clear coat (which I think it has?). Will 
finish the rest of the car next coupla days, it is time consuming and a 
good workout.  The cheap buffer is working pretty well.  It will be fun 
to do the job on other cars and see how they look.


The ABC suspension keeps the car very stable in hard cornering and the 
Sport setting stiffens it up noticeably.  Looking forward to trying it 
out...  The 500 has adequate power and moves the car well, a 55 or 600 
would be quite a beast.  It is a rather big car too so rides well on the 
road, what little I have done in it yesterday.


Some "Grand Touring" will be fun once I figure out where to tour to!

I can see that.

I’m all for paying for a good quality tool, for sure. I’ve got some Hazet 
wrenches in my collection that are simply amazing when it comes to durability 
and ergonomics. If I was making a living with my tools I could certainly 
justify it. For those of us who are DIYers it’s a bit of a stretch, that’s all. 
I try to get into the midrange if not better, there’s no reason to buy junk if 
you’re going to be replacing it regularly or if it fails when you’re using it.

for the lifetime warrantee, on a tool good enough to rarely need replacement,

The reduction in toll booths has really sped up traffic. MA has no toll booths 
at all anymore, they just bill you by mail. Apparently NY has seen the light 
and is going the same way. Get an EZ pass and you don't need to worry about it.

We drove the GW through NYC a couple months ago, IIRC the whole deal was 
$10-$15. Not bad all things considered. We went through just after lunch and it 
wasn't too bad traffic wise. Going through NYC is definitely cheaper although 
the new bridge that replaced the Tappan-Zee is pretty nice and traffic scoots 
along pretty good out there too.

Hey what's it like driving up into Oppressionland these days up I-95 
from DC to BOS?  I am taking a road trip in October up that way and want 
to know how much NJ/NY etc will rape me and what I need to do to prepare 
to pay the Great Usurpers for driving on the shite roads. Also I know I 
can't carry but can I have my equalizer devices in the car with me?


I'm guessing a coupla jugs of 5W30 won't help...

Nice!

Yes, they are probably factory wheels, as there were several models in that 
time period that had staggered wheels. Different widths, different profiles as 
well. It does make a difference in how the car handles, for sure.

What's that thing weigh, 4700?
Local yard (literally down the road from me, about 5 miles away) had 
$230 a ton on their sign.

If that were within 100 miles of me for $500 I'd jump on it fast.
