Re: [MBZ] A small step to the dark side: I buy a Harbor Fright battery electric lawn mower
Used it a bit tonight. I was surprised by how quiet it is. So far so good. Mowed all the corners and edges that my tractor can't reach and it used about 1/5 of the battery according to its 5-bar LED gauge. True, it's up to Kaleb to decide if their offer is fair. If it isn't, counter-offer with documentation. You can even take it to court if you can't get them to agree, but that will take time and has its own risks and potential expenses. The estimate was $4,800 to repair. That means the car has to be worth at least $6,800 for insurance to want to repair it. Is it worth that? If someone were advertising a '99 E300 with a quarter-million miles on Facebook for $6,800 would we be in agreement or calling them a crackhead? I'm guessing that with maybe some haggling they'll offer him something between $5k and $6k. That's $3,500 - $4,500 more than he paid for the car. I noticed that too. Did they scrape them off the car just before the picture? Back in college I took a photography class. One of the students was ostensibly taking pictures of birds for an assignment, managed to catch 2 other students doing the dirty in the bushes and somehow not notice the background of her picture that she then printed (back in the days of real film and developing and printing) as a glorious 8x10". She presented it in class and I couldn't control myself, ended up on the floor laughing. One of her friends had to actually point "look, here is his penis." -Curt On Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 04:37:06 PM EDT, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: And what is with the piles of dirt on the ground in front of the car? Re: [MBZ] A small step to the dark side: I buy a Harbor Fright battery electric lawn mower
Busch Gardens has a great “HallowScream” thing they do on weekends only leading up to Halloween. I have two favorites there: 1.) Topiaries that are actually people. They’re often placed along walking paths between attractions, and you rarely expect a plant/tree to jump out and start screaming at you. 2.) Skaters (skateboards and rollerblade) that run around all over the place and have stuff on their gloves like flint that sparks when they drag it on the ground. They’ll go blowing past you and put their hand down and throw a huge shower of sparks out. Great fun. An annual event, was even more fun when the kids were younger. -D > On Aug 18, 2022, at 10:56 AM, Jim Cathey wrote: > >> You need one [scythe] for Halloween. Re: [MBZ] OT: Jetta TDI, good deal?
Remembering that the market for all vehicles is still gone stupid, although it seems to be getting back to something resembling sanity. It looks like, in my area, that the spread on TDI prices is really high. For reference, when I bought my '15 Jetta in 2019 it had, I think, 75,000 miles and I paid just over $9k. It's at 98,000 miles now and has only had a few issues, like needing brakes and sway bar links, oh and struts because a spring broke. I *think* it needs one rear shock although I'll do both at the same time. It's bouncy in the right rear but nothing seems loose and passes a shock test if you bounce the rear end. Tires don't seem to wear abnormally. I'd pass on any TDI automatic. They're not known for longevity, especially if maintenance isn't followed religiously. -Curt On Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 02:57:15 PM EDT, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: Not really looking to spend this on a car right now, but sometimes like to calibrate expectations. Re: [MBZ] A small step to the dark side: I buy a Harbor Fright battery electric lawn mower
I have a reel mower but we have too many sticks and other "stuff" in the yard. They're probably fine if you have "real" grass but when your lawn is mostly weeds its too hard to generate enough force to cut the thick stuff. Plus you can't let it get too long. Our grass is really long right now, I've skipped a mowing cycle but we're in the midst of a drought. Our lawn is also the greenest around because I left it long... -Curt On Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 10:12:13 AM EDT, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: Or a (push) reel mower. Re: [MBZ] A small step to the dark side: I buy a Harbor Fright battery electric lawn mower
The "all nighter" stove we have in the camp has a, frankly obnoxious, 13" max log length. It's hard to judge the size when cutting, hence the stick. I've got a field full of white birch in the 6-8" diameter range. I usually cut them 8' long as that's where they start to get too skinny to be worth it and pile them by the garage. Cut to length later using the stick as a gauge. -Curt On Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 09:09:55 AM EDT, mitch--- via Mercedes wrote: On 2022-08-18 09:02, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: > > The axe handle is my measuring stick so I know the wood will fit in the > stove. Re: [MBZ] Oil Filter Change?
I've never had an oil related failure on a large engine (once on a lawnmower maybe) so I don't worry about it too much. The farm tractors get changed once every 2 years but we're talking less than 100 hours of run time, synthetic 5w40 in the '98 Ford and 15w40 diesel oil in the 1952 Farmall. That Farmall's engine is completely iron, I'm not worried about acids particularly, I'm leaning on the relatively high TBN of diesel oil to absorb the acid... In a month or so I'm going to replace the leaking oil pan gasket on the Farmall. I had been debating not changing the filter at that time but now I'm thinking I ought to, there might be some contamination during the job... -Curt On Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 08:20:28 PM EDT, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: I change my oil and filter every 12 months regardless of miles. Re: [MBZ] A small step to the dark side: I buy a Harbor Fright battery electric lawn mower
This is exactly what I would do if I needed a hand mower although I'd probably buy Makita since I've already got an investment in their tools. https://photos.app.goo.gl/dDawMRvUWeTDQDFS8 Dad bought a Bauer (Harbor Freight) electric chainsaw a year or so ago. The pic shows how much wood it will cut on a single charge. I don't remember what size the battery is but knowing my dad it's probably on the small side... The axe handle is my measuring stick so I know the wood will fit in the stove. For a limbing saw this thing is great, it's lighter, it doesn't shake, it stops immediately when you release the trigger so it's safer. I've already got a big-ish saw for taking down trees, my next saw will undoubtedly be electric. I wrote about using the saw on my blog and called it "Solar Powered Logging" since I charged the saw off the solar at camp. -Curt On Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 12:53:32 PM EDT, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: I have an old Lawn Boy two-stroke push mower that I use for small areas that the lawn tractor won't reach. It's become harder and harder to start, I had it serviced a few years ago and they told me compression was low. If I'm lucky I can get it started using starting spray or propane from a blowtorch. It runs unevenly (surges). I've cleaned the carburetor, adjusted as well as I can and I'm just tired of messing with it. At some point not everything can be a project; some stuff just needs to work without fuss. I bought an "Atlas" 80V battery electric push mower yesterday. $199 for the mower, $99 for the battery, charger was free. Charging it up now. From what I have read, most of these electric push mowers seem to be made by the same Chinese manufacturer. Claims to be "professional grade" but it's definitely built to a price. Stamped steel deck. The motor housing, battery housing and wheels are all plastic. But, it's something I will use for 15 minutes at a time, maybe once a week in peak lawn-cutting season, so I'm hopful that it can serve that purpose for a while.
