[MBZ] OT strange heat pump issues?

2023-04-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
A while back the wife said it sounded like the heat pump was going out as it
was loud. I was out of town but when I got back it seemed perfectly normal. One
day about a month ago it was running and the outside unit was loud like a
bearing in the fan was going out. Also, the inside unit was not running at all.
I shut it off figuring I would turn call the service contract people. Later on
it got cold enough to turn it back on so I did. All seemed normal until this
morning. It has been warm so it was shut off but I did turn in on last night as
it got cold. It was fine then a little while ago it was back to the fan bearing
sound outside, and inside unit was not running. I shut off the thermostat and
after a minute or 2 the outside unit shut off as expected. Just now I’m sitting
here and with the thermostat completely off, the outside unit started running.
It sounded normal with no fan bearing noise but the inside unit was not
running. In fact, it’s out there running right now. I’m getting ready to go
shut the breaker off. What is going on with this thing?

One other thing. I went out to look at it and pulled the cover off and the

the cover it shut off on its own. Has not started back up since.

[MBZ] Fun with CL600

2023-04-02 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
So I pulled the CL600 into the garage to address some issues today:

No signals from the RF SAM
Replace worn out steering wheel telematics buttons
Install intake screens on air cleaner
Replace broken glove compartment light assembly
No RR brake light (LED assembly)

I went at the SAM first. This was a good choice, as when I oulled the existing
SAM out of th efusebox, I found the main supply connection had come off. Not
being sure if it just occurred when I pulled the SAM out or if it had been out
before removal, I reconnected the cable and put everything back together, then
ran a quick test in DAS. SAM is functional! Huzzah! So now I have a spare.

Next I’ll be going after the telematics buttons in the steering wheel and the
rest of the list.

Hey Floyd - does to steam cleaner do anything (good) to the sticky plastic

Re: [MBZ] Fun with CL600

2023-04-02 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I don’t think the steam cleaner is the right tool but it might loosen up that
sticky layer while also taking off and lettering. I have used Goo Gone to some
effect but I don’t think it’s worth the bother and effort.

I did not fire up the steamer today as my car is quite clean and didn’t need
any of that. I do have a very sticky panel for the headlight switch and I
noticed a couple of the lower seat trim pieces are getting a bit sticky too.
The headlight panel is probably available on eBay or AliExpress for cheap, I’ll
look that up.

I did do a bit of carpet cleaning, there were a few stains here and there, a
scrub with cleaner and the extractor got everything really looking like new.
Black carpet is a lot easier to keep clean! It’s a very nice low-humidity day
so I hope it dries quickly.

I put some essential oils (tea tree and eucalyptus) in the extractor solution
with some alcohol and Odoban which leaves a nice fragrance. I can still smell
rodents piss though, probably in the duct work. I’ll have to look into that AC
duct cleaner stuff.

Interior actually looks almost new, there are a coupla little minor scuffs on
some plastic but almost unnoticeable. The seats are in amazing condition, black
leather holds up well. One of those detailing brushes and some simple green
gets all the crannies around switches and vents and such really clean.

These C215s are beautiful cars.

Re: [MBZ] Fun with CL600

2023-04-02 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
With the battery disconnected I popped the airbag and switches off of the
steering wheel. I think it took me all of maybe 5 minutes, if that. If you
don’t have one, bite the bullet and buy a Mercedes 126589001000, screwdriver
bit. This is the one and only tool that allows you to consistently connect up
with those Torx screws that hold the airbags on the steering wheel. It hits the
target every time and makes removal of the airbag a real piece of cake.

One of the screws holding the switches on was seized in the brass barrel that
was molded into the plastic. I ended up breaking it off the plastic so I could
get at the brass barrel with a pliers while turning the screw out. No damage,
looks like the very tip of the screw had been cross threaded.

Powered back up and got everything reset. Ran a DAS quick check to follow up.
Checkmarks in almost every section, a few little “fs” being known issues.

I went to the rear SAM which is what controls the taillights. I turned the
brake lights on using an activation in the SAM. Left rear is there, right rear
is not. Tracked power on the left side to see where it flowed on the metal bits
of the taillight assembly. Did the same on the right side. Nada. I’ll have to
go through the "list ‘o’ fuses” to rule out a blown fuse. After that I’ll need
to start tracing wires or pull the taillight assembly and see if the LED
assembly is bad and could be dragging the circuit down. The LED boards are
replaceable, thank goodness!

Not getting the “window drop” on the right door. I’ve synched the windows and
all, but no difference. The soft close feature does not work on the right door,
either. Probably a microswitch issue on the door latch. A future project, for
sure.

Otherwise, everything went well, no surprises. Covered it and called it a day.

Re: [MBZ] OT strange heat pump issues?

2023-04-02 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
This does not sell me on the idea of getting a heat pump. The state of MA is
all hot for everybody to get rid of their old oil burners and get heat pumps
but if 15 years is the lifespan I'd say pass. The boiler in our house was here
when we moved in back in 2006. It's probably from the 1990's and works just
fine.

[MBZ] The Poos camera

2023-04-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I have to say, the mounts on these things are horrible.  Today I had to
go around and readjust them as they have all dropped over time. The one
on the shop was pointing straight down to the ground and it appeared to
be the worse of the 4 I have (still have 4 more in the box I need to
install).  I used a pair of channel lock pliers to the point that it
seemed like I was going to break it and the thing still would not stay
up.  It has a ball socket with a slot in the bottom to allow the camera
to be tilted downward as needed.  The problem is, you seem to have to
not allow the slot to be somewhat under the rod of the ball joint or the
camera falls.  You have to have the slot pointed to one side which will
hold the camera up, but this somewhat limits how and where you can point
them.  Having this slot in a position to where I can have the camera
pointed exactly where I want it will cause the camera to drop, so I have
to compromise the pointing.

Yes, they are. However, since they use a common thread size, I’ve set most of
my cameras up with mounts of my own. I’ve had them replace two of their crappy
mounts and told them what I think of the mounts. Not sure if it mattered.

I just fabricated stuff up as I needed it and depending on where the camera was
mounted.

Anything with a 5/8” coarse thread as I recall does the trick.

Seems a little pricey, but it's got heated seats, rain sensing wipers, leather,
etc.

Get it down to $2800 and fly out and drive it home.

For some reason not clear my rear windows on the CL600 stopped working after

Passenger door soft close is working, driver door not but I can hear the air

Heat pump is ok to some low temperature then you need backup, oil or gas. I’m
not sure a heat pump would be great in your climate. Also worth considering how

bet a new oil boiler would not last like your old one.

I think these appliance companies did some research and figured out that most
people move every 10 years or less and they build the appliances accordingly.

Re: [MBZ] OT strange heat pump issues?

2023-04-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Well I don’t believe a fan bearing is end of life for the unit: it’s just
strange that it seems to come and go. I do remember years ago I had a problem
with the unit running non stop and never turning off during cooling season. At
that time it was a wiring issue to the thermostat. Sounds like that might be
the issue again.

I have one that had dropped to 19% but within the last couple of weeks or so
it’s back up to 30. I will keep an eye on it to see if it continues to climb.
