I think that's a vacuum switch over valve. One line goes to the throttle
valve and the other goes to your distributor. You've been running all this
time with mechanical advance only.

2005-10-19 Thread BenzBarn
I did a mechanical restoration on a Roadster 3 years ago that sold for
$125,000.00 USD. Seems like a real bargain now.

Rudy did all the repairs on a buddy's '57 Roadster after it bounced off a
guard rail and then got hit by a Gullwing sliding backwards, totally out of
control. No one got hurt but the repair bill was probably over $100,000.00

Gullwings are not particularly nice cars. Very hot, cramped and noisy
inside. Give me a roadster any day, which is a far better car

They almost never work once they screw up. I had a guy tell me he could fix

Re: [MBZ] Disaster

2005-09-06 Thread BenzBarn
Seems to be a responsible view - everyone looking out for themselves in case a
disaster strikes. Makes good sense really...

However, look at what happened. The State level of government was just as
smashed up as everything around it. It would seem that after they went through
the storm it sort of washed away any logic along with it. The federal
government has a play in this but I'm not American so I'm not sure what that is.

So, you hunker down with 5 or 6 days worth of food and water. Everything looks
bad and then when the dam breaks you find that your house is sitting in 10 feet
of water. You move upstairs or in the attic to get away from certain death.
Your food and water is down stairs in the fridge where it's now contaminated
and you couldn't get to it anyway. So much for being prepared.

A few years ago we had an ice storm that covered most of eastern Ontario and
Quebec. The main power lines all fell down and most of the area was with power
for quite a while. The army was in there by the next day or so. Anyone needing
power for essential services were donated generators to keep things going.
Anyone who heated with wood wasn't too bad off and some people even stayed in
their barns with livestock just to stay warm. Travel in this area was almost
impossible with heavy sheets of ice covering everything. People were
uncomfortable, frustrated and worried but for the most part they felt
reasonably safe. I don't think there was too much looting.
In short - everyone pulled together. There was almost no fore warning for this
storm and few people had more than what you or I would have around the house at
any given time as far as supplies go. Oddly, candles were in short supply along
with flashlight batteries which we shipped in by the truck load.
Few people really understand what it's like to go without power for a few
weeks. In the winter everything will freeze solid after a day or so. You can
move to a place down the road or to a shelter but you may come back to nothing
if there isn't any law and order in the area.

Up here if things get too out of hand the PM invokes the War Measures Act. It
happened before in about 1970 when the FLQ got out of control in Quebec. People
were rounded up and there was martial law from what I remember.

Re: [MBZ] Cars of which we dare not speak....

2005-08-30 Thread BenzBarn
Classics were made during the late 20's and 30's up to WW11. A handful after
the war based on pre war design. They're called classics because it was the ''
classic era '' Everything else called classic is just a spin off of the term -
means nothing.

I get a kick out of some guys who call their ' 57 Chevy a '' classic car ''

If you want to be a car guy it helps to educate yourself not only about what
you have, but about cars in general. Generally, old cars fall into 3 basic
groups:

Antique:
Anything 25 years or older which is a pretty broad in definition as all old
cars become antique even if they appear to be too new.

Milestone:
Late 40's to 1972. Covers at lot of American and Euro cars with the 2000GT
being the only Asian car on this list. Anything that changed the way people
looked at cars or some unquiet design is on the milestone list. 6.3, 600, 111
Coupes/Cab., 113, 190SL, all 300's, 220S Coupe/Cab. 220 Cab A. None are classic
cars.

Classic cars:
1925 to 1947. Hand built with few produced. Special body work, high
performance engines and very expensive when made. Auburn, Cord, Duesenburg,
Marmon, Cadillac, Lincoln ( V 12 ) and many euro cars are on this list. S,
SSK, SSKL, 770, 500K, 540K are some MB examples.

Europeans tend to call all their old stuff classics - that's a language
difference kind of like calling a trunk a boot. Some people call their old
stuff vintage which I prefer.

Re: [MBZ] Cars of which we dare not speak....

2005-08-30 Thread BenzBarn
Hard to say which cars will be desirable in 20 to 30 years but you can
figure low production sporty models to be right at the top. Anything
collectable now will be in the future.

None of them will be classics though except rare pre war cars.

Re: [MBZ] GUNS AND THE REALITY

2005-08-29 Thread BenzBarn
Kind of strange hearing people talk about self defence with hand guns. It's
something that not on the radar around here. No one talks about hand guns or
how they perform or how much they will mess someone up. That sort of thing
is pretty much taken for granted without ever owning one or using one for
any reason.
There are those who own hand guns but their use is very restricted and
almost no one gets a carry permit. Police, military, ( some ) customs
agents, swat teams, armed guards, RCMP and special opts all carry side arms
but the average Joe can't or won't.
After spending over a billion dollars on gun control all we still have is
the same drug lords and gangs shooting at each other. 95% of our hand gun
shootings are done by the above list. Police shootings are added to our
homicide rates, probably to make it look higher than it is.
Oddly, the public likes to hear about crime, just not in their back yard or
house. If there was no crime reported they'd think the police were sitting
around Tim Horton's drinking coffee and eating doughnuts.

Re: [MBZ] E-coli

The worse case here in recent times was at Walkerton Ont. Canada. Heavy rains
and spring run off ran contaminated water into the towns wells. The guys
running the system were either asleep or drunk at the wheel and most of the
drinking water entered to the system without any chlorination.

By the time anyone realised there was a problem several hundred were sick and
several died. The media were quick to pounce on agriculture but the inquirery
found no links at all - the public still thinks so anyway.

The result is some of the toughest water standards anywhere in NA. Truly
Orwellian stuff.

Re: [MBZ] Oel

I'd like to think that no one around here would do anything based solely
upon someone's reputation, good or bad.
Some of us uncivilized types might have the right answers and some of you
white lab coat guys might too. Which one you gonna believe, eh?

There was once a time when doctors, lawyers, teachers, clergy and anyone
with letters behind their name got automatic respect and entitlement. The
rest of us unwashed had to claw our way to the top the best way we could.

Given the fact that some of these folks with letters have shown to be
nothing more than kooks, quacks, charlatans and pedophiles, the age of
entitlement must be over. Of course, most are decent citizens and a very
small few usually ruin it for everyone.

So, we might be sage, or we might be salacious. Reputation alone, and what
you read around here, won't necessarily tell you that.

Re: [MBZ] strange noise (revisited)

2005-08-24 Thread BenzBarn
That's kind of how it works. MB basically said, '' Lizen you peple, ezer
you zell exclusivly to us or ve von't deal vith you. No moore zeling to WD's
or rezellers. ''

So, some OE companies went along with this because the market share was so
small anyway for some older car parts. The Classic centres scooped up what's
left and now ignition mods are $3,000.00 CDN for a 560 SEL. Not any better
price in the States either. No one else makes them and they can't be fixed
from what I'm told. It's either used or new.

Simple things like pistons for some cars in some sizes are almost dried up
in the reseller market. All this stuff has been subbed over to the Classic
centres. MB dealers have to order from them and the discounts are less than
on late model parts so you won't see any great pricing. All of this makes it
harder for you your guy to get you certain parts at good prices. This only
applies to certain parts at certain times but many things have gone up in
price 3 or 4 times in the last year or two. I an effort to keep fast moving
parts profitable, they moved some production to cheaper labour markets.
I call this way of doing things, '' The race to bottom .''

So yeah, you can probably find the part but it might be close the full list
price sometimes.

Re: [MBZ] Oh oh, another oil thread

2005-08-23 Thread BenzBarn
I thought MB diesel oil filters already have a by pass system built into the
filter so extra systems won't get you that much more. I use AMS/OIL 15W40
para synthetic which is more than capable of long drain intervals. This oil
has a TBN of 12 which I think is fairly high.
Our tractors run about 300 hours between oil changes ( approx. 10,000 -
15,000 miles ) Clean as new on the valve train after 3,000 hours so I think
it works.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel for thought

2005-08-23 Thread BenzBarn
Almost as thrifty as getting fix it yourself info around these mailing
lists.

5 - 7 K on dino oil is running right out to the max I'd think. That would
be about 1/2 life for M1 so if it was used properly it wouldn't be any more
costly. You didn't save anything but feel like you did and simply got what
you paid for.

Kind of like wood you cut and burn. It warms you 3 or 4 times

Re: [MBZ] Oil/Diesel Mixtures

2005-08-23 Thread BenzBarn
I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that. Automotive engines share the
same basic parts but heavy diesels are designed differently. Longer stroke,
lower RPM's, different valve timing, direct injection, different injection
pressures, torque curves, piston design and probably more.

Some older tractors had pre combustion chambers like MB engines but I think
almost all of them today, along with industrial or commercial diesel
engines, tend to be direct injection.

Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool

2005-08-21 Thread BenzBarn
 It's used for V8 style engines. Everything from 1976 and on. 450, 380, 500,
6.9 and 560 that I've seen. I know some newer diesels have hydraulic
lifters but all the ones I've worked on are mechanical.

However, I was talking about MB tools in general; how expensive they can be
and how little you might end up using them once you have them, while noting
that some are absolutely necessary.
Why would a diesel expert make such an assumption about hydraulic lifter
base setting tools and I thought you don't answer unsigned posts? lol

Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool

2005-08-20 Thread BenzBarn
This tool is for setting the base measurement on hydraulic lifters. Can't be
done without one.
There's a small pin that rests on top of the lifter along with the tool and
a small red line is on the pin. If it shows red when you place it right you
need a thicker or thinner lash pad under the rocker.
Any noise at idle is usually from worn lifters, lash pad adjustment or low
oil pressure.
By the time all these things take their toll the cam lobes are usually worn
out so checking base settings is a waste of time.
Some people don't want to spend money on their cars just to fix a little
tick at idle if everything else is OK. Again, and in that case, more waste
of time to take any measurements.

However, you can't do the base settings without this rather expensive tool.

Re: [MBZ] Chain crimp tool

2005-08-19 Thread BenzBarn
Hey, I'm farm boy and you learn to make do. I used to rivet sections into
a mower knife all the time and this isn't that much different.

There's noting to it if you know what you're doing. Lay the chain in place,
slide the master link in, put the centre piece in and use vice grips and a
small nut over the pins to force the other link into place.
I use two hammers - one at the back of the link and the other to slowly peen
the link into place. A study of the factory crimp shows that it really
doesn't take much to peen it into place. I very seriously doubt that it
will ever come apart. If the smaller crimp from the tool holds it, so will
this method.

You guys might be surprised at just how many people do this but don't say
that they do. No doubt some are unaware of the tool but 500 bucks is too
much for it anyway. All you're really doing is riveting some metal -
something I learned how to do a long time ago.

You need to remember that DIN is higher than SAE. I think it's about 250
DIN or around 275 HP SAE.

This particular 500 has been DOT'd in California and has very small cats on
the down pipes. I think it would top out around 145 MPH.

Not sure how aureate the speedo was because the tire size was changed so it
may have been going 120 when it shifted into high gear. All I know is that
it had VERY long legs and pulled hard right from a standing start.

If you hold your foot in it, the trans will shift into high gear around 130
MPH !

Re: [MBZ] Syncing carbs

2005-08-03 Thread BenzBarn
There is none. You have to put one in-line so it won't change or affect other
functions, assuming that they work at all.

Re: [MBZ] Syncing carbs

2005-08-03 Thread BenzBarn
No they won't work all that well unless you use a T junction in line. Actually,
using a vacuum gauge to set this up isn't all that effective as there's far too
many variables in the system. Late valve timing, late ignition timing, leaking
valves, low compression etc. all influence vacuum readings. Might be useful as
far as getting some sort of optimum reading but that would be right at the very
end of all your adjustments after checking timing with a strobe.

Re: [MBZ] Syncing carbs

2005-08-03 Thread BenzBarn
I stated that incorrectly:

Once you have the throttle plates seated in their respective bores turn the
idle speed screws IN
2 turns, not out 2 turns. This may be too much and you will need to adjust if
the engine is clearly running too fast.

You adjust the fast idle speed through the front choke housing cover. Open the
throttle fully open and you should be able to see the screw poking out of the
hole. I've seen where they were bent so you may need to remove the outer cover
by taking off the 3 small cover nuts. The screw should rest against the fast
idle cam but not affect hot idle speed. I adjust the choke flap so that there's
not too much tension but still enough that the choke will close when the engine
is cold. Set properly, the engine will fast idle at about 1,200 RPM and as you
touch the throttle it will step down in idle speed as the engine warms up. Once
at operating temp the fast idle has no effect.
Without the choke working properly the spark plugs will load up and the car
will start and idle poorly. Once everything is set up and working nicely it
should start every time and pull strongly right up to cruising speed - hot or

2005-08-03 Thread BenzBarn
If it's an aluminium housing the dwell should be 30 and if it's cast iron it
should be around 38. 41 is OK if it runs well. This is a tricky question
because you seem to have two different systems running on the same car. Dwell
angle appears to be a function of the distributor model and maybe not the
system used. As far as I know, aluminium 6 cylinder distributors and V8's use
30 degrees if they're running CD ignition.

Re: [MBZ] Syncing carbs

2005-08-03 Thread BenzBarn
You still need to set the dwell angle to 30 degrees if you haven't done that
yet.

As for the carbs; take the linkage off and screw out the idle screws until the
throttles seat in their bores. Turn each screw out 2 turns and then install the
linkage until its free off tension or play. Turn the idle screws in until they
seat lightly and then back them out about 3 turns.

Start the engine and let it come up to operating temp. If the engine won't run
turn the idle speed higher by a turn or do some basic adjustments until it
will. What you want to do is keep all of your adjustments roughly the same on
each carb. They may run differently even after you have them set perfectly and
each one may have a slightly different setting while running as well as you can
get them.

Make sure you have ALL of the ignition set right with low resistance wires. No
carbon core on anything.

Dan

I adjust until they work right. You can tell by how many turns you make on the
fuel screw. If one is 2 turns more than the other the throttle plate openings
aren't equal. I've never used any special tools.
Of course, no one will be inclined to believe this after the wheel bearing
adjustment berate...

My wife and I were travelling once and it was her birthday the next day so I
bought her a Garfield look alike stuffed cat. As we were driving along at
night I hit some animal on the road. She was concerned but I said it was
too dark and that we wouldn't be able help it anyway so we continued on. We
got a motel room and turned in for the night.

The next morning when she was in the shower I went out to the trunk, got the
cat and proceeded to stuff Garfield into the grill on the 230SL. When she
came out I was looking out the window through the curtain. She asked me what
I was looking at to which I replied,
'' Holly SHIT! Come and look at this! ''

She just about lost it when she saw what appeared to be the cat we hit the
night before sticking out of the grill. Took me an hour to calm her down
while I went and buried the poor dead animal. Had to buy her a necklace for
her birthday instead..

She still has no idea. Every now and then she says, '' What you laughing

Hook your dwell meter right at the end of the green distributor wire where it
goes to a small junction box. There should be a small metal post sticking up -
hook on there. You can't take a reading off the coil like a regular system.

Re: [MBZ] Dwell - the saga continues

2005-07-29 Thread BenzBarn
Well, it should have an aluminium distributor for that year so maybe it was
changed. I'll have to look in my specs to see what you should have. I have a
customer who has the same car as you and it's a ' 70 with aluminium
distributor. 30 degrees is ideal for this unit.

If the shaft bushings are worn the points will close up at speed. You can
adjust for this a bit by opening them up more. They'll close to about the right
amount at speed. Put a vacuum on the cell and see if the advance is working.
Some of these units have advance and retard on each side. Try and make the
advance part work if you can.

Worse case you can send it to me for a rebuild or repair.

Dan

Re: [MBZ] Dwell

2005-07-28 Thread BenzBarn
One of the problems on cars with CD ignition is that people never service the
distributor. Since the points will last much longer, the normal light oiling
during change out usually never gets done. The rubbing block needs a bit of
point grease, oil cup on the side of the housing needs a few drops of engine
oil and the advance needs a few drops after you pull the rotor off. Even later
cars with full electronic ignition still need to have the felt under the rotor
oiled.

I find these units to be worn out a lot more than earlier cast iron non CD
units even though they're newer. Some are only good for parts. There seems to
be two main types with different parts inside. Both have the green distributor
wire with the condenser attached but one has a round hole ( early ) where the
wire enters the housing and the other has a square hole. The vacuum cells are
also different. These parts will not interchange. Distributor caps may also be
different.
Fuel injected cars tend to use vacuum retard while carb engines tend to use
vacuum advance systems. May be the same on late cars.

Re: [MBZ] Dwell

2005-07-28 Thread BenzBarn
If you oil the felts on the main shaft through the oiler they last a long time.
The original bushings are usually steel but the replacements are some sort of
brass - possibly self lubricating.

Re: [MBZ] Dwell

2005-07-28 Thread BenzBarn
I rebuild distributors here with a proper distributor testing machine. CD
ignition stands for capacitive discharge, an early electronic ignition device.

Put a magnet on the housing which should fall off. Pretty easy to see if it's
aluminum or not.

Depends on what you mean by a fair bit of oil.
I find that my SD leaks out as much oil as it uses ( which isn't that much )
and neither warrant fixing.

Have you checked the injection pump timing and chain stretch? A simple drip
tube works pretty well to time the pump. Black smoke would be unburned
fuel..

Re: [MBZ] need info

Chuck, Chuck, such hostility... you could hurt yourself

I've worked on both cars and yes they're as fixable as any other. I have a
6.3 for sale here right now that I did a lot of work on and I've done
several others. I've only worked on one 6.9 but I didn't find it as hard to
work around - kind of similar to a CIS 450SL engine.
The 6.3 engine is a different story. It took me all day or longer to R&R the
injection pump on this car. It was running very rich with black clouds of
smoke out the back so I determined that the pump had a problem. A lot of
stuff has to come off before you can even get near the pump but once I did
get it off, I realised that it had been rebuilt and then installed out of
time to the engine. I put it back on properly and it never missed a beat
after that.

The other thing is the air suspension. It's not rocket science but it still
scares most people away. Once it's operating properly it's a very nice
system. Like all things it needs to be serviced and maintained closely. Neil
at Star Motors did all the rebuilds for me although I've fixed some air
valves myself. The control lever can go over centre and lose contact with
gearing inside. Think of rack and pinion steering - it looks similar to that
inside.

However, the question is about a 6.9 I've seen a few go through Toronto
auction pretty cheap and unless they're nice cars they don't bring too much
on the open market.
Any low production car will have very specific parts and some pieces will
have prices dreamed up by people on drugs. The engines are strong as long
as they aren't over heated which happens from pluged rads where the coolant
wasn't changed often enough. I don't think there's an oil cooler on these
cars, just the big tank in front of the right front wheel filled with 10
litters of oil. It runs very close to the tire and I suppose the air flow
aids in cooling. I still have the rad from the one I did here and it was
completely clogged. The head gaskets blew out and so the top end had to be
done. Can't say how much that was - it was done at another shop in Toronto.
The struts are probably the biggest expense if they go bad. I imagine
there's an accumulator nearby that can go bad as well and cause a harsh
ride, but that would be less costly. Very smooth powerful cars as I
remember.

I know there's a M100 Group for 6.3, 600 and 6.9 but I don't know the URL.
Maybe someone does. I'm sure we can help this guy out , right gang?

( As for our esteemed friend around here, well I don't know. People say that
he can speak for and defend himself but I never see that happen. With all
these followers speaking for him, hey, why would he ever need to ~)

Even on the 113 list where I suppose I might be called some sort of guru ( I
hate that though ) people take me to task if they think I'm wrong. I don't
mind, it keeps me sharp and honest. Some of my best learning has been from
mistakes I've made - no one is perfect.
Frankly, I believe it's a real mistake to elevate anyone to such a level
that no one is ever allowed to openly debate ideas and differences with
them. I welcome debate and all of you should too. I came from a family where
you got things off your chest and the next day everyone was friendly again.
