Don't need to bother with springs much, just maybe spring spacers down the line
for a proper conversion. Front halfshaft is different, shifter linkages are
different, transmission crossmember is different (though, same crossmember as
240D auto), and auto driveshaft will not work. The 617 manny flywheel is
different too, but some folks have used the 616 manny flywheel with no problems
- longevity is still up in the air, though. The 5-banger was factory balanced
differently than the 4, which explains some of it.

Toss in driveshaft rebalancing, pulling dash to install pedal cluster, etc, it's
not an easy swap, but doable. Figure a week in a well-equipped shop to do the
swap, and another week to sort out niggling issues.

Rick Knoble wrote:
There is something you don't know about. The stabilizer holds the upper

It doesn't hold them in place, it links them together in an attempt to improve
handling characteristics and reduce body roll in turns. The UCAs are mounted to
and pivot at the body on one end, while the other end is connected to the
steering knuckle, the bottom of which is mounted to the lower control arm which
is held in place by the spring (whose other end is mounted to the chassis, and
whose motions are damped by the shock absorber). The LCA is stabilized at the
rear by the caster joint.

While short-term I think the car would be drivable, long-term I think it would
wear the suspension components quickly as they were forced to move more than
they should. Worst-case, you over-extend a shock on one side, and ram the UCA
of the other side through the inner fender (or rip the UCA from it's mounting
point altogether).

So, not safe, but certainly doable. I certainly wouldn't do it unless it was
the only means to get myself and the car home, where the car would then be
parked until I either parted the car or repaired it - with a preference towards
the former.

Okay, on the back of the IP is the shutoff valve. Around it is a
square-with-a-corner-cut-off piece of metal that holds it in. Can't remember
the bolt size (probably 8 or 10mm), but I remember using my 1/4" drive ratchet
to take them out. Once that square piece is removed, you want to pivot the
exposed portion of the shutoff valve towards the engine, such that the end you
can't see moves towards you and disengages from the rack. Then pull out, and
voila. One removed vacuum shutoff ready for whatever brand carb cleaner you've
got laying around.

When I was troubleshooting earlier in the week, I had Donna remove the
instrument cluster, and we disconnected the vacuum line that runs from the
ignition to the valve and cleaned the oil out of it. Great opportunity to get
the wife involved in a little game of "find the tube". ;-D

To be honest, after all of the "engine runaway" and "need to buy a new
long block" posts I am somewhat concerned about replacing this part
without having the fire department standing by 10 feet away.

If you install the new part the same way you removed the old one, you'll be
fine. If you shove the stupid thing in straight, your engine will go to max RPM
on start, and you've literally got seconds to shut it off before it starts
consuming oil for fuel and eventually killing itself.

But don't worry - a little caution on the re-install, and everything will be
golden. If you don't have caution, well, insert longblock, problem solved. ;-)

Yes. Our 240D, amongst the other plague of problems it's having right now, is
doing this. If I remove the vacuum shutoff valve and clean it, the next few
times, the engine shuts off just fine. After that, it's hit or miss - mayhaps
it will, mayhaps it won't.

Fortunately, I have a spare vacuum shutoff valve handy, and will probably have
Donna take the wagon tomorrow so I can replace it.

What happens if you hit defrost after starting the car, then wait 10 seconds and

If should step down another notch in Auto-Hi, and if the compressor switch is

compressor clutch, and the auxilliary water pump. Everything else is just routing current, and since the system still
functions as normal (minus the entire blowing up fuse # 5 thing), we figure it's probably not some random vacuum switch.

So I threw a new fuse into slot 5, undid C127, and we'll see what happens with the aux water pump out of the loop. If
the fuse lasts until the weekend, I'll also doublecheck the grounds on the circuit. If I find any loose, I'll tighten
them down and add the pump back into the fray. I think G102 is behind the instrument cluster, which is convenient,
because I've been meaning to do an IC overhaul anyway.

Well, if the servo is drawing excess current, then there has to be a place to install an inline fuse to test it,

And the long and the short of it is, if the servo *is* causing the problem, it's just more impetus to retrofit Euro

[MBZ] ACC2 Woes

2005-07-18 Thread John Ervine

Greetings listers!

I'm having some electrical issues with the ACC2 system in our '80 300TD wagon. Hopefully someone has been down a
similar road before and can spare some insight.

The symptoms are pretty simple: fuse 3 self-destructs when the pushbutton module is in the bi-lev or auto functions, and
the compressor stops functioning. The compressor functions as normal in defrost mode, and in general, the ACC servo
functions as normal - vents open as necessary, temperare regulated just nicely. A fuse lasts maybe 2-3 trips before
blowing up. I've blown the fuse in both Auto-Hi and Bi-Level, without use of the other function until the fuse blew and
was replaced. As part of my troubleshooting, I swapped out the amplifier with a known good spare, and the symptoms
remain. I'm a pessimist, so I'm suspecting that the compressor is drawing too much current.

So, are there any obvious places I should look, and where should I begin my tests to narrow down and eventually isolate
the problem component?

An ALDA also reduces fuel as air pressure drops, BUT since the turbo
raises air pressure and the way it's calibrated, the most usual ALDA

BUT it and the pump are constructed and calibrated so that maximum fuel

Sorta.

ADA = Atmosphärendruckabhängiger Volllastanschlag

Which roughly means atmospheric pressure compensation.

ALDA = Atmosphärische Ladedruckanpassung

Which roughly means atmospheric pressure and charge-air compensation.

In simpler terms, an ADA provides fuel enrichment on non-turbo cars, while an
ALDA provides fuel enrichment on turbo cars.
