Re: [MBZ] 240D exhaust repair

2017-11-24 Thread Dimitri via Mercedes
You have to dissect the rotted pipe stub out of the muffler, insert a new pipe
into the hole in the side of the muffler and weld the new pipe to the sheet
metal on the muffler. Since the steel is thicker on the pipe, you have to
direct the mig nozzle more towards the pipe and weave the puddle into the sheet
metal carefully so as to not burn through the muffler but at the same time get
good penetration on the pipe.

I dont' thing there is 2 " of pipe off the muffler.  I think the only
thing that MIGHT work is to have a connector section that is smaller and
fits up inside the muffler.  At the end of the day it probably needs a
new muffler.  Which it being a 1 year only sort of deal is $300+ iirc.

If there is at least 2" of pipe in front  of the muffler, grind off
the welds, and use the tin can hose clamp bandaid.   It is cracking
from vibration.  the bandaid releives the stress and vibration.  I
have run those on 200Ds for 40 + years.  You need to replace the can
every 2-7 years.  Or you can use 22-26 ga flat steel.  One hose clamp
on the back, one on the front.

Or,  you can give the POS to Dimitri.  He will fix it!

I need to do something about the exhaust on my 95 e300. It started
breaking off close to where the pipe runs into the rear muffler. I
welded it up, rather poorly probably as it was my first time. It
lasted a couple of weeks then started breaking loose again. I welded
it some more but it probably won’t last. I need to pull it off again
and see about getting some sort or connector that will fit over or in
the pipe and weld that.

Wow! 22 years of patch jobs, now that’s impressive! Might take you up on the
resonator and muffler offer! The last exhaust I repaired was on the 240 that
Curt gave me (formerly Dwight’s)-the one with the head issue. I repaired the
muffler and resonator with sheet metal as well as replacing a good amount of
the pipes. Whole thing cost me $90 in parts from flaps that I pieced together.
It fit better than an OE exhaust as I pretty much tailored it to car!

Subject: [MBZ] 240D exhaust

The 240D got loud today. Discovered the patch pipe just to the rear of
the bend in the downpipe was cracking at the weld. Further investigation
led to a thumb sized hole on the inside.

Well, it needs a new pipe...Same as it did maybe 15 years ago.

I took two hose clamps and a piece of heavy flashing that I have been
tempted to throw out several times, but saved for some reason. Put the
car up on ramps, crawled under, wrapped the flashing around, put the hose
clamps on it and tightened up the clamps.

Diesel Muffler bandaid 101. It will probably last for 5 years, then I
will replace the flashing again. That should be good until 2024.

123 Diesels are great, but I love the OM603 too!

Oh, By the way, 15 years ago, I didn't buy a new pipe. That is when the
patch pipe was welded in.

[MBZ] 240D exhaust

2014-10-14 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
The 240D got loud today. Discovered the patch pipe just to the rear
of the bend in the downpipe was cracking at the weld. Further
investigation led to a thumb sized hole on the inside.

Well, it needs a new pipe...Same as it did maybe 15 years ago.

I took two hose clamps and a piece of heavy flashing that I have been
tempted to throw out several times, but saved for some reason. Put
the car up on ramps, crawled under, wrapped the flashing around, put
the hose clamps on it and tightened up the clamps.

Diesel Muffler bandaid 101. It will probably last for 5 years, then
I will replace the flashing again. That should be good until 2024.

123 Diesels are great, but I love the OM603 too!

Oh, By the way, 15 years ago, I didn't buy a new pipe. That is when
the patch pipe was welded in.

I might could have done that with Gump, but there are three bolts with
springs that sort of rust welded themselves together. Had to sawzall
the thing or your method would have resulted in a new manifold and

Ja, I tried that maybe 10 years ago after we put the 2.4 in the 200D. THe
muffler fell of and got lost, so I told #1 son to take it to the "lifetime
guarantee" muffler shop because they would replace it for as long as he
owned the car. BIG mistake. Now it has a too short, too fat muffler with
tooo small an outlet that they made sit wrong in the space (angled up, not
level). Every time I see it I get mad that those bozos are almost as
stupid as stealership parts changers.

I recommend changing it yourself if you physically can.

Oh man. Each time I do an exhaust system, I say I'm never going to do it
again and I'd rather just pay someone. But somehow, I just keep doing

[MBZ] 240D exhaust

2008-08-06 Thread Wilton Strickland
At about 3 years and 38 kmi, My '80 240D and I were cruising comfortably at
about 65 mph when, suddenly, the deafening roar of an un-muffled I-2400
blasted away my serenity. 'Took a coupla seconds to realize that the noise
was not from an R-4360 that it sounded like, but was from my lowly MB 2.4L.
The exhaust pipe had broken away from the muffler immediately at the front
end of the muffler. Everything stayed in place - just broke apart. MB
replaced exhaust sys from manifold back at no cost to me.
