I think I've solved it. Third day in a row with no sign of alternator
problems. It's nice when they're easy!

As described, the job was too easy. The VR seemed to be just fine. I
noticed that the bail was off, it holds the plug into the back of the
alternator, so I pulled the plug out and cleaned the contacts up with
some Radio Shack contact cleaner. Reinstalled plug and its bail,
checked voltage at the battery with engine running at idle (13.8 volts).
This a.m. there were no issues with the light coming on, so I may have
just had some dirty electrical contacts. Also checked the belt, tension
was fine. I did not have time to T/S any of the noises, which seem to
be mostly loose and rattling stuff, maybe this weekend I'll be able to
take a look.

Having done this job on both Diesel and vergasser versions of the 124, I
can verify that they are in the same relative position.
That being said, I've also learned that when the brushes have been too
short for awhile, the rings in the alternator are often black or burnt,
or both. A little fine sandpaper cleaned up mine so the alternator works
again.

Hope this isn't a trend or epidemic, but my '92 300D 2.5 wouldn't start
this morning - just figured out that the battery is dead. Don't know
whether the
2 1/2 year old (84 month) battery is toast, or if the alternator isn't
charging yet. This is the only alternaotr in my collection that doesn't
have a new VR/brush pack yet. As it will be 20F in the AM, I hope
charging the battery out of the son's parked 190D will cure the
situation.

Now that I look at what I wrote, I think I've only done that job on

stuff like the fuel injection system, ignition system (or lack
thereof), and turbo (ditto), most everything under the hood is in more

or less the same place on the OM603 and M103 cars.

The latter is a trivial job on a 124 if you can raise it up a foot
or so with ramps or stands. Just slide under the passenger side of
the engine on your back with your head towards the rear wheels, take

off the belly panels (if you are lucky enough to have them), and the

back of the alternator is staring you in the face---two Phillips
screws and the VR is out.

Yes, and I even have the MB tool and new bits to install. I've had them
on the shelf for about two years now, need to just make some time and
get 'er done!

However, there's also something loose that sounds like muffler or heat
shield, really obnoxious at low RPM / idle speeds, and probably some
other contributors around the car.

[MBZ] ALTERNATOR LIGHT WOE

2009-12-08 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
All,

In the last few weeks, on my '87 300TD with 317k miles, my alternator
light has started to glow faintly at times, usually right after
starting. Yesterday it even briefly came on twice while I was driving
to work.

Is this most likely the voltage regulator? Is the proper test to
measure voltage at the battery, pass is 13.5 volts or greater, but less
than 14.5 volts?

The latter is a trivial job on a 124 if you can raise it up a foot or
so with ramps or stands. Just slide under the passenger side of the
engine on your back with your head towards the rear wheels, take off
the belly panels (if you are lucky enough to have them), and the back
of the alternator is staring you in the face---two Phillips screws and
the VR is out.

Re: [MBZ] ALTERNATOR LIGHT WOE

2009-12-08 Thread OK Don
Having done this job on both Diesel and vergasser versions of the 124, I can
verify that they are in the same relative position.
That being said, I've also learned that when the brushes have been too short
for awhile, the rings in the alternator are often black or burnt, or both. A
little fine sandpaper cleaned up mine so the alternator works again.

Hope this isn't a trend or epidemic, but my '92 300D 2.5 wouldn't start this
morning - just figured out that the battery is dead. Don't know whether the
2 1/2 year old (84 month) battery is toast, or if the alternator isn't
charging yet. This is the only alternaotr in my collection that doesn't have
a new VR/brush pack yet. As it will be 20F in the AM, I hope charging the
battery out of the son's parked 190D will cure the situation.

Re: [MBZ] ALTERNATOR LIGHT WOE

2009-12-08 Thread Jim Cathey
I was told that replacing an alternator in a car with a weak battery
can cause failure of the new alternator. Is this true?

If the battery has a short inside, yes it could happen.

Re: [MBZ] ALTERNATOR LIGHT WOE

2009-12-08 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
This was some years ago. The alternators came from Rusty (Bosch reman) but
honestly at this point I think that the car must have some electrical gremlin
or something.

where are you sourcing the alternators? Gump killed one.

I had a dead alt, and just took it to the rebuilder. Cost more than getting
one from Rusty, but it came back better than new.

No confusion. Your thread just triggered curiosity on my part. I have a car -
220D which I've been slowly restoring which has a healthy appetite for
alternators. Not putting a new alternator in a car with a weak battery was
just one of the tips I received at one point in time.

Dimitri,

I hope I haven't confused you, I have two threads going, one for my
Wife's Infiniti which just got a new battery but still has hard-to-start
condition plus O2 sensor codes, second thread is for '87 300TD with
alternator light woes and many minor irritating noises but no new
battery. One of the symphony of noises is the belt tensionser, maybe
I'll find out that another is the alternator's death knell?

Serpentine belt, fairly new, I'll check to make sure the tensioner still
tensions. Thanks for the suggestion, would be nice if it were that
simple.

All,

In the last few weeks, on my '87 300TD with 317k miles, my alternator
light has started to glow faintly at times, usually right

after starting. Yesterday it even briefly came on twice while I was

driving to work.

Is this most likely the voltage regulator? Is the proper test to
measure voltage at the battery, pass is 13.5 volts or greater, but less
than 14.5 volts?

Very respectfully,
