Re: [MBZ] Anybody want this fine automobile?

2021-12-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
This is the first time hearing the sound of an OM606 Diesel engine!! It seems
pretty smooth and quiet! I like the look (feel) of the W210 chassis. One of
those would be nice to cruise around here in NC! It wouldn’t be just putting
around town since we live in the country. A Diesel would get to hwy speeds
since everything is at least 8 miles away. I’m going to have to search for
another Mercedes Diesel.Kevin in Lexington, NC

Probably ignorance on their part. A modern diesel starts just like a gasoline
car. Unless their thing can’t deal with a delay in starting while the engine
glows?

Getting one ready to sell. Runs great, looks decent, has about 300k. Has cold

It also has a new windshield and brand new tires on the back. Fronts are
OK.  It is somewhere between beater and nice, and the only reason I even
mentioned it here is I actually think it might be too nice to sell on
fakebook as a cheap beater to somebody who will destroy it.

You could have spent 3 times the asking price and still had a good deal.

I see those go for the $2,000 mark if they come available... They were made
to work hard, back when men did such a thing.

If you ever decide you don't want it... drop me a note, we will make a deal.

SWMBA is a natural resource AK lawyer. Work has been scarce up there with the
previous administrations ministrations. Nobody was booking work and the past
six months were just abysmal. Then the current administration got calls
regarding the possibility of making thing happen. It seems corporations were
betting on HRC not DT, and had shelved things in preparation for a lackluster
number of years. The spigot has been opened and it is a gusher. More work
needing immediate action and piling up for the foreseeable future, or next
election cycle.

It also seems to have cleared a number of stagnant court cases where the Feds
were sitting on or losing paperwork in attempts to stop or kill drilling and
production. Somebody called the Justice Department or cabinet fellow and made
inquiries about the cases impacting his company. One cage rattled and all
manner of cases got dismissed.

Sounds like the guy is just an old Ford collector. One of the Jalopnik guys
had an article about how he almost couldn't give his old luxo barge away
and lost money on it. So it is all subjective. Find the right guy and you

Ahh but where does the electric come from?

Don't say solar, you've no idea how much solar you're going to need to charge
an electric car. Right now your electricity comes from fossil fuel and nuclear,
a tiny (though rising) percentage is renewable...

Electric cars are not "no emissions" they're non-local emissions.

limiting factors on how fast LNG can burn are 1) oxygen availability and
2) enough heat transfer to vaporize the gas to where it can mix with
whatever air is available, and to get into the flammable range (which if
I recall is a fairly narrow band, just a few percent). Other aspects
are the stuff is cold, so it tends to stay close to the surface and
takes a lot of energy to warm it and make it dissipate too far, there is
a limit to how fast heat can transfer from water or soil ( see 2
above). One of my first real jobs was running models for risk analysis
on LNG tanks and tankers in Boston Harbor. No matter how "bad" we set
up the models (i.e., worst-case scenario) the outcome of a catastrophic
failure was not particularly devastating. It generally appeared that
the best way to deal with it (depending on circumstances) was to set it
off and let it burn itself out without spreading too much, esp if it was
on the water. The flame helped heat it enough to burn without spreading
further than it would if not burning, which would limit the damage
area. A big concern was the stuff getting into cellars, warming up,
then getting set off by pilot lights or electrical arcs or something
like that, and stuff started blowing up everywhere.

The tanks had dikes around them to contain a spill, it could be dealt
with in situ, probably by burning if it came to that, or maybe to let it
dissipate to where it wasn't flammable, which could be problematic
depending...

A ship tanker was a different deal. Trucking the stuff around was a
bigger issue, but most loads were hauled in the middle of the night when
traffic was minimal, and I think they had police escort. I don't know
how it is done now, even if at all. I think Boston shut down one of the
tanks (there were 2), maybe both?

Ahh but where does the electric come from?

Don't say solar, you've no idea how much solar you're going to need to charge
an electric car. Right now your electricity comes from fossil fuel and nuclear,
a tiny (though rising) percentage is renewable...

Electric cars are not "no emissions" they're non-local emissions.

Those were the product of Jimmuh Cahtah and his Moral Equivalent of War
(MEOW) about the A-rabs screwing us on oil.

An interesting dimension of that whole deal back then I got from a
friend I had gone to school with along in there, who worked for GATX
Corp. which basically owned all the rail tankers and storage facilities
for oil, gasoline, etc. He told me that every tanker they owned at the
time was parked on railroad sidings hold oil etc. while there were
"shortages" and prices were spiking. There was not one drop of capacity
anywhere to ship anything, which was causing lots of other issues, and
there was no capacity to store any more product. But their inventory of
tankers etc. was completely booked which was good for their profits.
Magically the "shortage" ended with high prices, and everyone was making
big money. Thanks, Jimmuh! BTW I think Warren Buffett is in that
business now... which makes one wonder why certain pipelines were delayed...

As opposed to railroads that occasionally take out towns.

Pipelines are the safest way to move oil of any type. Really when you consider
the amount of oil moved around the world every day the amount of leaks are
minor. Its like airline crashes, when they happen they're big but they don't
happen often.

I don't think the upper limit has been found yet, but other than pesky oil
leaks, the one I had with over 400k was still showing good condition in

Arguably your '91 300D is one of the best, I'd say put your cash into
keeping that car going. I think you can easily get to 500k if you keep up
with maintenance and repairs. My '87 wagon is now up to about 362k miles,
no sign of quitting. '95 E300 with OM606 is up to about 371k.

My Seiko 5 is a little more than 3/8" thick.

The nylon band that it came with is a little stiff and needs to be broken
in to be more comfortable. Many of the reviews that I looked at included
advice for a replacement band, so that seems to be the biggest downside so
far. I'm going to give it a few weeks to see if it softens up.

Thank you.
My day to day watch is an old Seiko quartz watch that I have worn since
about 1980. It is about 3/16 thick. Leather bands and batteries last
about a year. It needs another band as of yesterday. It has been cleaned
once.
I periodically buy other watches but generally don't use them and end up
giving them to my sons. I gave the younger one a pocket watch and the
older on a Seiko similar to the one being talked about recently, that
was recommended on the list a year or two back. It had the metal band.

Depending on the model, Seikos tend to be fairly thick. The price you
pay for eternal operation, I guess, gotta have room for that big rotor
that does the work of winding the watch.

Thin automatics are scarce, expensive, and usually less reliable than
a Seiko 5. Buren Microrotor comes to mind (it was sold under several
name, including Hamilton). I have a parts one I'd like to turn into a
working watch one day, but it's full of tiny fragile looking parts

The pocket watch was probably a Hamilton 299B -- my father had one he
bought when he got his first good job. 499B if it had a sweep second
hand. I still need to re-staff my father's, my brother the genius was
carrying it at work in a machine shop on a string and the string broke
-- a good watch chain was cheap, have no idea why he was wearing a
several hundred dollar watch on a string.

At any rate, the pivots were broken off the staff, and while I have a
new one, I've not done any watch work for a while.

I believe military issue in the mid sixties was Hamilton, but if not
probably a Bulova, both top manufactures in the US.

I suspect also autowind models rather than electronic or electric due to
sealing issues and humidity in Viet Nam, although that would account for
failures in the jungle. Batteries aren't a field replacement option on
watches.
