I just did this yesterday. Here's how I did it:

Two pieces of clear hose about 18" long. New primary (inline) and secondary 
(spin on) filters.

Removed old secondary filter. Filled new secondary filter with Diesel Purge and 
installed.

Removed "cigar" hose (return line) at the filter head and clamped short piece 
of hose in its place.

Removed supply hose with old primary filter at injection pump. Used old primary 
filter as a hook to hold it and supply line up and out of the way, higher than 
tank so no fuel would flow.

Got new inline filter and clamped it to piece of hose. Plugged outlet end into 
short hose on injection pump inlet.

Poured remainder of Diesel Purge into clear bottle. Inserted both hoses into 
bottle, making sure hose going to injection pump was all the way to the bottom 
of the bottle.  Pumped primer to make sure any air was purged out of supply 
line.

Started engine and revved throttle up and down while Diesel Purge was consumed. 
Ran until there was almost nothing left in bottle. Shut off engine.

Reconnected hoses and tightened clamps. Pour remaining Diesel Purge into fuel 
tank.

NAPA stocks and shelves it. Local store here has it in good supply... NAPA
warehouse here in Phoenix has it by the case, should you need larger
quantity.

Other FLAPS likely carry it also. Never bothered to check.. have a
commercial account at NAPA so they are my "go to"..

head gasket at the front of #1  could be from excess oil from the 
turbo seals.  Second had about a half dozen cracks.  None are serious 
enough not to use the head.   There are 18 common crack places on a 6 
cyl.  The worst was my Hawaii OM621 with 18 cracks, with  only 12 
normal places to crack as it is a 4 zyl.  A tired head will also 
crack outwards from the valves or prechamber also.  Driving a cold 
engine like you stole it is the cause.  That was someone else who 
caused the cracks.  The head was in the trunk when I bought the car. 
It had cracked to the water jacket, hydrolocked, snapped the timing

replaced a OM603 head, with 6 that I have owned.  The cracked OM603 
came off a junkyard car last weekend.  I'm not afraid to put in on an 
engine, as the cracks are within spec.

Yup, probably will, I'll be in California...
I had the snowmobile out after one storm, went 2.5 miles total. The water holes 
weren't frozen on top but had a coating of ice on the bottom. Stopping in one 
would have meant getting stuck even though they weren't that deep so I ended up 
blasting over the top. The negative consequence of that is getting soaked...

Our '05 Golf is responding well to that treatment, the turbo has variable vanes 
that I think were carboned up. As I've been driving the stink out of it the 
point at which the turbo spins up is getting earlier, fuel economy is rising 
and it feels a lot zippier.

differential fill plug before removing the drain plug.  In one case, I had to 
use a big breaker bar and leg muscles to break the fill plug free.

dealer yesterday. Everything fuel related with regards to all rings and
hoses I've been replaced. Battery fully charged, have the charger on the
Ready, going to lightly pressurized fuel tank with compressed air and crank
on that pig until it's primed and running.I'll them make sure
everything works then get it back up on the ramps and do all the fluids and
filters since it sat for so long.

Following a cold engine start, once the idle is smooth and full oil
pressure achieved, drive off gently.  I'm sure that all or most of us here
remember Marshall's admonition that allowing a MB diesel engine to sit and
idle to warm it up was a _BAD THING_.

Keep engine RPM below 2k as long as possible. Accelerate slowly until
engine oil is at full temp.

How does one know when engine oil is at full temp? Watch the oil pressure
gauge at idle. Normally, full oil temp is achieved with fifteen minutes of
driving after full coolant temperature has been reached.  Note the "hot"
idle oil pressure after those fifteen minutes of driving, and that pressure
corresponds to full oil temperature.

When you know your engine and the hot idle oil pressure, you can simply
watch that oil pressure gauge and have confidence that you can start
"driving like you stole it" after achieving hot idle oil pressure.

Good points, Curly.  I had forgotten about the cool down thing - I’ll have to 
get into the habit of doing that.  It’s been a good 15 years since I’ve driven 
a diesel, so a lot of those habits have been forgotten.  The last 5-6 miles of 
my drive is 35 mph or slower, so I get a bit of a cool down out of that.

I didn’t bother doing the Italian tuneup with this car since I found that 
putting my foot into it yields little visible smoke.  I don’t think it really 
needed one.  Of course, the prolonged 13 hour drive at 80 MPH didn’t  hurt it, 
either.

Clay - it's getting all new filters and fluids, something I do 
whenever I get a car that's new to me.  That way I've got a point of 
reference for everything.  I'll do the differential this weekend and 
probably the transmission next weekend.


Bob - it's weird - I have been driving this car with my diesel 
technique - foot to the floor, get it up to speed and let off to 
maintain.  It gets to speed so quickly I've found my self 
consistently going well above the speed limit and not realizing it. 
I can only think that I've been channeling my old 1979 300TD, which 
you had to drive like this if you wanted to get anywhere.

The caveat to the "drive it like you stole it" mantra is this:  Drive 
softly until the oil us up to operating temp. ~15 min.  THEN Drive it 
like you stole it.  Then either let it idle 5 min before you shut it 
down or drive softly the last 15 min.


Head cracks are caused mostly by driving it like you stole it with a 
cold engine.  Oil temp gauges and Exhaust Gas Temp gauges (EGT 
Pyrometer) are good to have.  Turbos are ruined (cooked) and head 
cracks are formed by drive it like you stole it, then shutting off 
the engine with high EGT.  This operating strategy is good for both 
turbo and non-turbo diesel engines.  The EGT gets higher in turbo 
engines.  Higher boost =higher EGT.


Iron head engines are more prone to cracking than the OM60x engines, 
but i suspect the water jacket cracks common to the OM603 are caused 
by hard driving a cold engine.  there can easily be 50% higher EGT 
when driving hard than driving soft.  Having the engine up to 
operating temp before the eyetalyeen tuneup lessens the pressure 
differential.

the stuff at all anymore.  If the injectors are bad enough I just rebuild
them!) But since you need to change the filters, use it to fill the spin on
before you install it.  It'll save you a bunch of cranking or the mess of
filling it with diesel.

injectors spiffed up will be good so your can

As long as the car is not running raggedy, keep it in the can.

If you run APS in your fuel 2-3 times a year, it will keep your system clean. 
I've used it for around 15 years now on my two old 617s and I never have any 
problems with fuel or the fuel system. It removes water, keeps tank clean of 
algae, cleans injectors and pump, and provides lubrication. I also never have 
to do Italian tuneups and put undue strain on my drive train just to witness 
some black smoke. It's available at any mcparts store and is not expensive. My 
Indie has never needed to perform a diesel purge on either vehicle (one has 
over 360,000 miles and the other over 425,000 miles, both still running fine). 
Just a suggestion.

Yes, sorry guys. I keep wanting to put an A in front of the PS. Anyway, I 
just grab some at one of my local mcparts stores, they all charge about the 
same. Every few months, I'll dump a few ounces in the tank and everything is 
ok. I've seen other products that might work better for gelling, but here in 
Atlanta, it rarely if ever gets cold enough for the fuel to gel. Anyway, I 
think and my Indie agrees that Diesel Purge is probably good for a neglected 
engine or one that has sat for an extended period, but otherwise isn't normally 
necessary.

The write up is interesting, but I don't think his method of replacement is
very good.  Not pop testing to check the opening pressure is a real
shortcut.  He also shows leaking injectors because he didn't adequately
clean the mating surfaces.  I use a piece of glass and fine sandpaper to
make sure all surfaces are clean and shiny.  Never had a leak.

Given his poor procedure for replacement, I'm a bit reluctant to trust his
opinion on nozzle quality.  But I think its worth more research.

I bought a Chinese knock off of a pop tester, maybe 10-15 years ago.  Looks
like the one in the MBZ book and cost about $200 back then.  My injectors
were all within the pop pressure spec so I didn't have to mess with shims.
But I did use an injector cleaning kit to ream out the tiny passages in the
nozzle; this kit is a bunch of tiny wires in assorted sizes and a handle to
hold them as you clean the various nozzle passages.  Or you can just replace
the nozzle assembly but reman injectors from Rusty cost about the same as
new nozzles (or did back in the day).

I see Kent Bergsma sells a kit just for this purpose
(https://mercedessource.com/node/6016) which is probably a good deal but
consider that you can get a whole set of new Bosch injectors from Rusty for
about the same price.

Not sure whether it is true, but conventional wisdom on the NectarineBits
forums has it that new Bosch injectors are made in India, and not as good
as old ones (i.e., if you can take the latter to a Bosch shop and have them
properly rebuilt and balanced, you will get much better results).

Yeah, that's my position as far as investing in something like a pop tester. I 
would consider what my local Bosch injection house charges to clean and adjust 
and compare it to both the expense and the amount of my time it would take.

I don't work cheap, so unless I could score a pop tester for a real bargain it 
would probably be better to just pay someone to do it for me.

As I remember it the spec is pretty far apart, something like 5 bar. I remember 
Marshall saying if you could get closer, like 2 or 3 bar that the car would run 
better but that closer than that wasn't probably worth the effort it would take.

You need to bolt the pop tester to your bench or a big piece of wood (like a
2x12) to hold it.  So you also end up with a diesel-stained piece of wood to
store.

I just bought the kit from Mercedes Source... it worked well out of the
box.  They also sell an assortment of shims in a kit.  Since I knew I'd be
doing multiple cars it was worthwhile.

I agree... over the years I've had several bad experiences with Bosch
rebuilds.  I recall putting a set in a euro 300D: a bad miss on one
cylinder... the injector was way out.  After that experience, I would bring
the rebuilt Bosch units to my local diesel shop to be tested and matched
before I installed them.

After going that far, I realized I'd be able to ensure my own quality
control by doing it myself.  I have always replaced the nozzles when I
rebuilt them.  Its time consuming enough that I don't want to have to do it
twice.

Last set I did was for my Uncle's '84 300TD... That was about two years
ago.  I heard the engine run recently and couldn't believe how smooth and
quiet it was.  I like those nozzles Mercedes sources sells.  I think
they're Monarch?

My local Bosch injection shop used to test and calibrate injectors to +/- 2.0 
bar for around $25 each.  Not sure if that price is still valid, but for the 
amount I didn't think it was bad.  And yes, getting them that close together in 
opening pressures made for a very smooth idle and ramp-up as load increased on 
the engine.

probably go ahead and have the injectors redone (cleaned and adjusted). Call 
around there must be somewhere in the metropolis that can do it.

That way at least your injectors are a known quantity.

[MBZ] Diesel purge leftover

[Dimitri Seretakis]

I just did a diesel purge. What do I do with the little bit that's leftover. It 
seems to have some floating debris. I guess it did it's job:) I'm also at a 
loss as to how to deal with the dirty fuel left in the old spin on filter. 
Should I let it flow through a coffee filter or something and re-use?

So the diesel purge didn't work wonders and yes I changed both filters after 
the purge. My car still shudders while accelerating. It used to idle roughly 
and stumble after long drives such as from Boston to DC. I haven't taken it on 
a long drive yet as I just performed the purge. Does this sound like an dirty 
or worn injector issue to you all or could my problem lie elsewhere?

One can of Purge might not clean very dirty injectors. Drive it like you
stole it, then do another can. Some injector issues cannot be cured by
Purge - they have to be rebuilt. How to tell when? I don't know ---

Any injector with more than 100k miles is suspect.  Purge is cheaper and easier 
and won't hurt.  Personally I'd get a set if rebuilt injectors from Q.

   I guess I should have used 2 cans.  But I'm not sure I have a problem 
that Diesel Purge solves.  At idle the car seems to idle a little low 
causing a vibration/shaking.  Doesn't matter to me but my wife complains 
about it - since its her car I'd like to fix it.  The DP was step 1.


   Now I need to study the Idle Control and what appears to be a bunch of 
little gizmos to maintain idle.  I'm thinking one of those like Idle Control 
Gizmo's has a bad gasket of has stopped working properly.   Unfortunately, 
the WSM talks about checking things with a special Electronic MB testing 
tool.   Of course,  it shouldn't be this complicated.

If your EDS is working, idle speed is adjusted by pulling out the little
round black plug thing, rotating it and sticking it back in.  It is
located on the fuse-box side of the firewall (on other side is the
engine).  Increasing numbers = increasing idle speed.  It should drop to
(from foggy memory) 550 RPM when you pull out the plug.

If that doesn't work, you can bypass all the complicated stuff, unplug
the EDS cable (two wire connector) connected to idle control on rear
most portion of IP, and then there should be a hex plug/adjustment
(6mm?) with lock-nut which works the same as earlier injection pumps.
Adjust this hex thing until desired idle is achieved, then lock it down.

I guess I should have used 2 cans.  But I'm not sure I have a
problem that Diesel Purge solves.  At idle the car seems to idle a
little low causing a vibration/shaking.  Doesn't matter to me but my
wife complains about it - since its her car I'd like to fix it.  The DP
was step 1.

Now I need to study the Idle Control and what appears to be a bunch
of little gizmos to maintain idle.  I'm thinking one of those like Idle
Control 
Gizmo's has a bad gasket of has stopped working properly.
Unfortunately, 
the WSM talks about checking things with a special Electronic MB testing


tool.   Of course,  it shouldn't be this complicated.

Damn!  I was getting all excited.  ;-)   But in the back of my mind I was 
thinking, I don't recall any of that in my car. Shucks.


BTW, when I was connecting the hoses to my DP glass jar, I noticed the both 
the supply  return hose ends near the chassis  those hose clamps like the 
factory uses.  It was a small piece of metal crimped into place.  What kind 
of tool does the crimping?  Anybody seen one of those tools?  Anyone know 
who sells the tools and metal hose clamps?

from Rusty - a solid metal band with a machine screw/nut clamp.

I think you are talking about a hose clip They can be crimped on with
a special tool, or just end cutters (I think some people call these
end nippers)

I think McMaster-Carr has them, also there are some at germansupply.com
but I don't know if they have the size you need.  They specialize more
in VWs.
