Re: [MBZ] Hotels

2020-05-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I would suggest, training your children is important, training yourself is
even more important.
If you carry "off body" in a purse, for example, you are still responsible
for where that weapon is at all times. "I was busy with -- and and
I forgot, is not valid... ALWAYS KNOW WHERE YOUR GUN IS AND MAINTAIN
CONTROL OF IT.. is the only valid rule.

Having kids, who have kids visit to play with them, presents yet another
spectrum of responsibilities as an armed parent.
Biometric quick access safes might be your better choice in the home, and
car. Locked up and loaded might become the "safe choice" for all guns in
the home, again, with quick access possible for the adults [in the dark
when things go bump and glass breaks, etc]

If you have a pool and you have kids, you have a fence and a locked gate
around that pool because of the risk... Being a responsible parent, you
also keep track of your floor rats to know they have not defeated those
safe guards to commit suicide by drowning... Yet, thousands of children
have, while parents were "otherwise occupied" not a good choice.

Same mind set needs to be in place with children and guns... you teach the
kids to swim, bu*t also teach* them not to swim without you being near
by... Same application, with guns..

There* always has to be an adult in the room... until you*r kid can be the
adult, you're it...
Welcome to parenting... and no, you don't get a vacation...

But you cannot train a 3 or 4 year old well enough to trust that they

idea to keep loaded guns loose in your home, or car etc. I don't know
how many times I have read of some young child taking a hand gun out of

have any access to loaded firearms. Neither should older children for
that matter. A child needs to be at least a "young adult" before they
are permitted any unsupervised access to firearms and ammunition. You
are all correct that everyone should be properly trained but there has
to be some reality to all of that too. I recall a news report of some
family in the USA who gave their quite young son his own .22 rifle which
he subsequently used to shoot and kill his younger sister. I don't
recall the age of the boy but when I read the story I was truly amazed
that the parents could be so foolish. I don't believe they were charged

inherently bad but carelessness can be very costly. I would assume the

You also need to be mindful of the fact that even if you train your own

In all seriousness, all children should be trained in gun safety.
You can't childproof every gun your kid might come into contact with, so
gunproof your kid.

I knew a guy who has taught thousands of kids in SoCal.
I don't know if he does it, but we're talking dozens of kids on hundreds
of Saturdays.
I can't find any mention of it on his website.
I hope the cop range he used didn't terminate the youth program.

Anyone who was properly trained would know not to break ALL THREE of the
critical safety rules,
even if they'd never seen that particular species of gun before and had no idea
how to clear it.
To which I add a fourth rule (displacing the traditional fourth rule):

4) If you've ever seen it on a screen, it's wrong. Don't do it.

Absolutely. Everybody who lived in that house bears some degree of

His only experience with firearms was likely through LE training.
Which makes him very dangerous, because he thinks he's a professional
expert, but in reality he's quite ignorant.
Like Lee DEA Paige: "I'm the only one in this room professional enough to
shoot myself in the foot with this Glock 40. Since it's empty I can do
whatever with it" Gotta give him credit for walking it off and not letting
a hole in his foot slow him down though, that's one tough guy. It was good
to watch all the kids yell at him and tell him to put the gun down and
quit playing with it. Gives you hope for the future.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trlPcDg-B4E

Then there's the guy who sued a gun shop for handing a loaded firearm to
an ignorant cop. Watch as he points the gun at everybody else in the store
the instant he gets his hands on it:

In reality you can't know which "new hire" LEO will respond to the 911 call, so
it doesn't matter who you are.

So it is critical you provide situation awareness to the responding officer
through the 911 operator. You want the responding officer to know who is the
homeowner and how to identify you, the tactical situation, if you are armed,
etc. before he/she arrives. Just remember that all this will be recorded.

Similar thing -- we didn't have guns in the house, but once at a friends
house we went to his parent's room and he showed me a revolver they
had. He may have had *some* training or we both just had common sense
because we didn't fool with it too much. We played with toy guns all the
time but we were old enough to know it was a "real gun" and we just
looked at it for a minute or so. It was his mother's gun, small,
probably a .22 but a .22 can easily ruin your day. Of course it was
totally unsecured, just sitting in a drawer, no trigger lock or
anything.

One more thing to I just remembered.  When I was a kid I did not get
this same sort of training/exposure to guns.  I recall one time I
discovered a revolver in my mothers room when I was probably 10-12
years old, somewhere in there.  Of course never having seen a gun except
on TV at that point I picked it up and messed with it.  It is a wonder I
didn't end up shooting myself. At some point around that same time frame
I remember a kid from school was playing with a gun and ended up
shooting himself.  I can't remember if he died or not (I don't think he

Our youngest of 3 is now almost 12.  All have been trained/exposed to
guns so they have no interest in even messing with them.  All 3 have
been raised with loaded guns all over the house.  All 3 knew not to
touch them but were not interested in touching them anyway because the
mystic was removed.  If you try to shelter your kids from guns, kids
will be kids and try to get into things they were told to stay away
from.  Our kids were shown where the guns are and what to do with them
in the unlikely even somebody decides to come in the house uninvited.  I
say unlikely but when you live way out in the country you are way more
likely to have a break in because cops are so far away and the city folk
looking to rob come out to the country to do it.

Re: [MBZ] Hotels

2020-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You city people forget that in small towns you know people. My dad was the
president of the rod and gun club for almost 10 years. The PDs from all the
towns around used that range because it was one of the smallest and easiest to
get exclusive use of. The police don't want anybody watching them shoot and
mocking their accuracy. The one time I watched it was truly atrocious.
Anyhow the police know my father by name so I doubt the response would be
different. The police knew the kid was being held at gunpoint anyway, my mother
was on the phone with them.
Oh, and the officer's response when he saw the offender was "You again?" He was
already driving on a suspended license for DWI. He started high school the year
after I graduated, his mother was the theater director at my school...

2003 is 17 years ago. I wonder what the police reaction would be today
if they came and your father was holding the shotgun. I doubt it would
be, " could you unload that gun sir?". Times have changed and he would
be lucky if they did not shoot him. I think these days one might want to
drop the gun and step back when the police arrived. In a sense, you
cannot blame the police. They don't want to get shot and it is becoming
harder to trust anyone.

No gun safe, it'd make more sense to have a gun room that had a strong door
which is, I suppose, just a big safe.
Not required in the state of Maine anyway.
Here in MA some kind of lock is. I used to have mine individually locked but it
was too much of a PITA. Especially as some of the guns are difficult to lock. I
finally got a gun cabinet earlier this year, super handy.

Good locks are a good basic protection, ours are double deadbolt, which means
you need a key on both sides. This prevents somebody from simply smashing the
window and reaching in to unlock.Landscaping so that there aren't any big
bushes or plants an invader can hide in. Lighting is a big one too, invaders
don't want to go around a lighted house where they might be spotted. A fence is
only good until somebody gets through (under, over, around) at which point its
protection.
"Prod-noses and curtain twitchers" is a Terry Pratchet phrase. Specific to your
question they "prod their noses into everything".

My cul de sac doesn’t have any busybodies, but between the various families,
kids, comings and goings I wouldn’t have the slightest concern about a home
invasion. In fact, a couple of my neighbors seem to rarely ever close their
garage doors unless it’s at night. One fo them even leaved the interior door
open so their kitty can go in and out via the garage.

However, the odds of you hurting yourself or someone else in the house with
a loaded gun are far greater than you being attacked in your house.
You do need to know where the ammo for a self defense firearm is located,
without having to search, or even think about it.

My parent's house is FULL of guns. The last I knew there were over 400. None
are loaded and you'd be hard pressed to find the correct ammunition for given
gun when needed...
No one has ever invaded any house I've ever lived in or near. I see no need for
a loaded gun in my house. Furthermore I've never been in a situation where a
loaded gun would have helped me.

started to run dad racked the slide on the old Mossberg 500. Kid fell right on

When the cops arrived they asked my dad to unload the gun. He laughed and

This is a misperception. At self-defense distances the shot pattern is only a
few inches in diameter. So you need to aim nearly as accurately as a rifle or
pistol.
Also, referring to Curt's 20 ga/.410 comment, there are good reasons to go with
12 ga., like availability of parts and accessories and ammo availability,
including low recoil loads.
My 20 ga Remington 870 still kicks like a mule with magnum loads.

Really great slum housing prospects. Seattle will tow an RV. Takes a few
months, but it does happen. Then the owner will buy it back at auction for
$50, drag it back downtown, install tenant, homeless pays him rent of a few
hundred to stay out of the weather. Wash, rinse, repeat ad nauseum.

Alaska snow birds will be allowed home. As long as the plague ridden RVers
remain ensconced in their homes on wheels and do not interact with the locals,
Canadians are giving the green light on their moving along the AlCan.

They will be expected to remain locked down in their rigs for a further 14 days
after testing safe from contagion once they return to US Soil. Lots of Karens
out to ensure compliance. There will be no NEW rental RV coming in this year.

I will be very surprised if there are not incredible deals on 2019 rigs by the
end of the year.

Time to invest!

#1 boy learned Whiting Petroleum was going into chapter 11. Tossed a $50 bill

Yesterday his investment had almost quadrupled in value.

An uneducated guess at which air carriers will still be in the air in two years
might be worth wasting a couple hundred bux en toto gathering up their stocks

The old ones are seen as homeless dojos that may not leave. Ever.

I do not see the magic of living in a small mobile space. Not a pleasure boat,
RV, trailer, tent, or other residential option without a foundation

This is much worse than 9/11. The rest of the world went about its business,
we cowered in fear for a few weeks, then got back on planes, with reduced civil
liberties. No business suffered interference to the point of force closures
and fines. I expect very few people actually lost their homes except those
right close to the towers that fell down.

ANC has closed the public side of the terminal, but get past TSA and the
business is pretty brisk, with food, drinks, retail. Have to keep the animals
calm

Toronado had a transverse engine, chain coupled transmission if I remember

20ga or .410 is much more accessible for smaller folks, nearly as good odds.At
one point one of the shotgun manufacturers sold a .410 for home defense, it had
a rectangular box on the muzzle which was supposed to hold the pellets in a
vertical, person box like choke. Maybe do less damage to walls? I dunno if it
worked or was just marketing.
The nice thing about a shotgun with something like #2 shot is it probably won't
penetrate walls, or if it does it won't have much power left. #2 probably won't
kill an intruder but will seriously impact their day...

I've occasionally toyed with the idea of finding a 1970s era GMC
motorhome in good shape. These were sort of intersting -- front wheel
drive, so the floor of the "living" area can be lower. No rear axle
either, the tandem rear wheels are on bogies with an automatically
leveling air bag suspension on the outside of the frame, again allowing
for a flat low floor. This could also be used to level the camper when
parked.

I don't know how many of these are still around and what sort of prices

I got one turkey on video 2 weeks ago. My camera doesn't like to trigger for
them I guess. The video is kind of funny, nothing is happening and then the
turkey's head pops into view right at the bottom of the screen.
I saw a hen yesterday. Today I listened to the tom gobble for probably an hour
but I couldn't get him to cross the river. He's in a little spit of land
between two rivers where its really hard to get at him. Depending on the
weather I may take the kayak out tomorrow otherwise its like a 3 mile hike,
part of it across a sketchy railroad bridge, to get over there.

I flushed the hen today but didn't see her. I could hear something moving near
me, I thought it was a deer so I started to get up to get a look and heard her
fly. She hadn't made any chirps or anything which is maybe why the tom doesn't
respond to me much when I call.

Wow, never heard of that. Is it based on some snob factor "we only want
new RVs in our park" or a safety concern of some sort (e.g. more likely
to leak grey/black water or have an LP leak). I don't camp a lot but
around the midwest I've seen some truly clapped-out RVs that look like
Cousin Eddy's "tenement on wheels" from Christmas Vacation, if not
worse. I mostly camp in state parks though, not private.

Ding ding ding. Winner winner chicken dinner.
The economy can probably be compared to a very long freight train in a slow
motion wreck. They smashed the lead engine into an imovable object. The cars at
the back haven't even begun to derail yet.

Hmm. Good point.

Lots of class A stuff on the market around here. Only real issue with those is

This is almost like another 911. I’m afraid it will never be the same again. I
think this whole deal has been made to appear worse than it is. There appears
to have been many (millions?) that had it and never knew it and recovered. It
just does not seem like it was worth destroying the economy over.

Re: [MBZ] Hotels

2020-05-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I heard an interview with the director of our airport last night and it was
pretty interesting. Southwest is the major carrier at TPA, and they’ve cut
flights significantly. What’s interesting is that even with one flight a day,
there are so many infrastructure issues that have to be dealt with no matter
what that the airport still has the majority of it’s employees working.

That being said, it’s also tough to grasp all of the related stuff that’s
affected by the lack of business. Hotels, rental cars, taxis, Uber/Lyft,
restaurants, off site parking, etc.

They’re bringing back businesses on a limited basis. For example, they have
allowed one restaurant and one retailer to reopen in each airside so there are
at least some services available. As flight activity increases they’ll consider
allowing others to open. What’s been tough is that there are a large number of
local restaurants that have places at the airport, and they can’t afford to
open for the limited number of customers. As a result the chain operations are
being asked to reopen.

It’s going to be interesting to see how all this comes back, and when…

[MBZ] Hotels near the Q

2017-08-25 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Can you New Englanders recommend a good area to stay in for Saturday
night? With the kids (3 and 6) access to a beach (or a pool) is
important. Anywhere along the coast in RI probably works, we will head
south back home mid day Sunday.

Thanks,
Jaime
