In 1986 our SL's have a switching boost power supply and a capacitor
bank to ensure that there is deployment current during a wreck that
might sever the main battery feed. This stuff is, I believe, integrated
into the controller in later years. It is, also, likely to be
discharged

by the time you go to work on the car. It's only there to handle a
power failure of a matter of seconds at most.

According to the service manual, disconnecting the brains of the system in
the passenger side footwell allows a shorting resistor to come into play to
prevent an unintended discharge of the bag.

At least that was how I understood it.

[MBZ] Monowiper Question

2012-01-16 Thread Dan Penoff
On the 92 300E I recently acquired, I had an issue with the wiper that I wanted
to run by the collective list wisdom:

While changing lanes I inadvertently turned the wiper switch on the turn signal
stalk. The wiper came on, but when I turned the switch back to Off it would
not park or shut off.

I found that if I caught the wiper at or near the park position with the
switch between settings, it would stop.

The next time I stopped the car and shut it off, then restarted it with the
switch in the Off position, the wiper stayed off.

I suspect an issue with the stalk switch, or possibly the contacts in the wiper
motor that tell the motor when the arm is in the parked position. I haven't
had a chance to consult the service manual, but will be later today.

Any direction or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dan

Gettin' a bit new for me, but on an '86 SL I found that somebody had
kicked the wiper 'relay' and broken it off. It wouldn't do the
intermittent thing, nor would it park. But it always did shut
off with the stalk switch. So, based on _that_ car I'd say that
your problem was the stalk switch, and that a shot of Caig Deoxit
right in the gizzard might do wonders.

(I glued that SL relay back together and bridged the broken traces
with wire and solder. Worked fine since then.)

2012-01-16 Thread Bob
I have a 96 C280 that had a monowiper with similar issues. It ultimately
deteriorated to being unable to stop the wiper blade without turning off
the car. I tried replacing the combination switch a couple of times (you
would think that I would learn, but this happened over the course of
several years and a couple of different dealerships/garages...).
The problem for me was not the combination switch but the relay that is
located within the main fuse box. Have a look at the following site for the
illustrated repair.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=62702

The repair suggests taking apart the relay to find the soldered connections
that have deteriorated over the years. I found it really difficult to spot
the defective connection(s). In the end, I just used a very hot soldering
iron on all the connections in the area suggested by the repair.

I would try Jim Cathey's suggestion, I've fixed two different stalks by
cleaning with a good contact cleaner. One issue on a 123 car was identical to

On the 123 stalk I had to take it completely apart as the contacts I cleaned
were inside the end of the stalk.

I pulled the 123 stalk, but it could have been done in situ. End cap can be
pried off. 124 was in situ, simply exposed the contact switch at the base and
sprayed it off.

I don't know if a 124 stalk has an end cap you can pry off; little parts
inside, be careful not to lose any...

2012-01-16 Thread Curt Raymond
My '83 240D would get stuck in intermittent mode and nothing would make the
wiper stop short of shutting the car off and leaving it off which isn't
particularly practical.

I ended up pulling the cap off the stalk and shooting it full of contact
cleaner. This was before I had deoxit (which I have yet to use) so had to do it
about once a week for a month before it seemed to calm down. Then once a month
for the year or so until the car expired.
