That's the sound, all right! Ours also had lost its muffler along the way,
there
at the end. Our U had no hydraulics at all. We used the drawbar, and the PTO
when mowing.

International's mistake was not licensing their system. Once the 3pt (The
Ferguson system) got out to other manufacturers the writing was on the wall.

Steaming pile of poo compared to International's 2-point fast hitch.
You could hook up to implements without ever leaving the seat.
And, it offered power roll and azimuth adjustments, as well as
lift and pushdown.  (Lift only, if you pulled the appropriate pin.)
Three hydraulic levers, to the Ford system's one.

Ford's system was basically inferior, but adequate.  And, it won
in the end.

Those old "Johnny Popper" tractors are neat because the engine is essentially
half of a 4 cylinder engine. When they're idled down you can hear where the
other 2 cylinders would normally fire, "pop, pop, miss, miss, pop, pop, miss,
miss."
Theres one in town with a loader on it, its smaller, a B maybe? I forget the JD
models. I'm not really into green tractors but I keep an eye on that one, if it
comes up for sale I'll go for it.

I knew little of the older JD diesel tractors until one day when I was in the

there was no way to get it off the Landoll trailer we had delivered it on. It
was a 350kW unit that weighed about 10,000 pounds. We sold it to a small dirt
track oval raceway outside of Muncie, IN that was going to use it to power
lighting for night races. This place was in the boonies and as a result did not
have the required three phase utility power available for the lighting.

So the guy goes running off and comes back a few minutes later with a guy
driving this old tricycle style John Deere with a big flywheel on the side. He
chains it up to the skid base of the generator, opens the throttle and drops
the clutch. This thing barely grunted while it drug a 10,000 pound piece of
equipment off the Landoll and across the grass to it’s resting place.

When I got closer and had a look it was a horizontal two cylinder with s stroke
that had to be measured in feet, or so it seemed. Had gasoline starting cups on
it, too. It was a really cool tractor.

LOL Fords of the '50s were puny little things. The advantage they had was the
3pt hitch well before anybody else had it. The ability to lift implements from
the hitch was an advantage for smaller farms but no real use for the huge
western farms.

Yes exactly. As a kid i used to watch my uncle throw that flywheel. My
grandfather had,a,cool 39 model B that you started on gas & when it got
warmed up you kicked the lever over & it ran on kerosene. Immediate belch
of black smoke then chugged along. I used to sit on his lap & beg him to

Re: [MBZ] New arrival at Okie Acres

2020-04-29 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Beware of leaking injectors or feed lines on JD's that have them inside
the engine itself. My Dad's 'new' JD was basically a lemon, and ended up
filling the crankcase with diesel fuel before needing expensive engine
work. It was also somewhat puny compared to the older tractors he was
used to.

He would have been far better served buying an older, bigger JD with
a more traditional engine construction. The lemon was turbo'd. Lots of
horsepower (on paper), but in practice fairly underwhelming for a lot of
uses.

It's my brother's problem, now.

Nothing we had pulled/grunted like the old Moline UTS. Heavy, redline
at 1200 RPM. 40-odd HP, but torque that would rip things in half. And
an appetite for gasoline to match!

I wonder if it will pickup a whole car if I put the forks under the middle.
That would be great but I don’t think this one is big enough for that. With
forks on it if the weight is further out from the loader pin it won’t lift as
much.

I used the bucket on those 2 because bumpers were already messed up. Normally I
use a pallet fork attachment and it will not damage anything while lifting.

Re: [MBZ] New arrival - 450SLC

2009-04-05 Thread Tom Hargrave
The V8 with the chain issues is the 380, not the 450. The early 380's had
single roller timing chains and the chain was not up to task. All so the
450s have double roller timing chains - you just check for stretch and
replace if necessary.

Well, the car checked out OK, so I bought it.

1973, with ye olde bumpers. 119k miles. Serial number 152!

Another hungry M117 to feed.

Looking through the records, I don't see any evidence that the chains
or tensioner have been changed, so I'm assuming that's practically an
urgent situation. No noise or anything, but IIRC, the recommended
interval is 100k, isn't it?

Check the stretch. The 4.5L goes a long, long time between chains,
117k miles is no surprise.

It will get marginally better milage with the valve timing correct,
though. 14.2 rather than 14.0, maybe.

I really like the looks of the 300C (incidentally, it is really just the
300 unless it has the Hemi V8). I think they are good looking cars, and
I suspect I am not alone because that cars has been very popular and
sold pretty well. I also really like the new Dodge Charger. BUT, I
agree with you that Chrysler has not added that much to the merger at
least not much beyond the bottom line. I think the Chrysler division was
showing a profit and in Today's automotive business it seems like
showing a profit is the exception. =20

Somewhere a MIT prof has a web page about college pricing. He calls it
the perfect racket for extracting monopoly rents. You set the price way
high, and then out of the goodness of your heart guarantee that anybody
can afford to attend. Then you collect more data from the families than
if they were applying for a mortgage, use the data to determine the very
most that they can afford to pay, and charge them that.

They don't accept fi'ty-cents-off coupons in the college's business

office,

so yes, that is what you are charged.

But thanks to academic scholarships, grants and student loans, you don't
have to write out a check for the whole thing every May. The check we
have

to write each month is for a hair under $500.

Werner, this set up was only used on the 114/115 chassis, the filter
housing was located down on the LS of the engine and consisted of a
spring in the bottom of the housing to push the filter which was topped
with a very fine disc filter that sat on top of the main filter. The
disc could only be placed one way to set down on the smaller diameter
threaded top of the bolt which held the assy in the housing.
Changing the oil was a very messy affair because the oil would run down
upon you when the filter housing was loosened. I solved that problem by
putting a drain plug in the bottom of the housing.
Now you know about the earlier 240Ds.

get the plastic pre-filter - without it, actual filtering of the oil isn't
happening.

it's unique to the 115 and older series cars - somehow, when they made the
filter housing top-mounted, they ditched the plastic.

Bruce,

As mentioned, your existing filter is being bypassed without the pre
filter
and spring. I hated the cleaning of that prefilter but it sure did
serve a
purpose, in addition to holding the main filter in place.

Also check your "hosts" file, some evil programs are known to modify
this which can send your browser to a forged site. For most folks,
the hosts file should contain the following:

127.0.0.1 localhost

There may be some preamble comments (# being the first character on
the line). A good idea to make the hosts file read-only if it is not
already so.

The hosts file would normally be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\
You might have WINNT instead of WINDOWS as the first directory.

You can also write your own hosts file to block most banner ads and
other annoyances, info at http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.
Note that if you do this, it can render some advertising links
nonfunctional (such as the "premium" links that show up on the
right-hand side of a Google search).
