you. Live in fear, buy our anti-germ stuff, it'll save you. If it doesn't we'll
sell you some new some new anti-germ stuff.

I've read that IBS is basically unheard of in the third world, the current
working theory is that some of the parasites in our gut that we work so hard to
kill are actually good for us and keep our gut running right. Thus our
germ-o-phobic world resigns some (many?) people to the bathroom.

People are funny about stuff, poo especially. I keep thinking I ought to start
humanure composting. I've read the handbook, we did an experiment at camp one
time (shoveling out a full outhouse is no fun, I'm looking for an alternative)
and ended up with nothing. Meaning one bucket full of stuff (which is to say
poo covered in sawdust) from the trial dumped in a pile in the woods with
leaves added over top became nothing in 1 year, meaning I couldn't find where
I'd dumped it... At home I was thinking about how much water we'd save.

A quality shoe can be revitalized. You have to take the insole out and do some
cobblery mucking about, then fit a good leather insole formed and fitted to
your foot and the shoe. The cost is not reasonable, and unless we are speaking
of near magical Italian or other handmade footwear, best to get your own new
shoe. That said, if you do not mind investing $200+, it can be done.

toss the liquid on, and kitchen scraps went there as well. Weeds too. Turn it
once a month, and in the spring you amend the soil in the garden.

Granddad told me about this when I asked him about the quality of his veggies.
After I walked to the garden and found him discharging the processed beer into
the hay filled bin. He was not interested in walking back inside while
gardening and the old fridge was stocked to the gills with cases of beer.
Gardening was a six pack affair. That allowed enough time away from Granny,
got the work done and kept Granddad hydrated.

I've heard shoes are one thing to never buy used. Don't they form to the

And why would they not RE-form? At least until they were ready

2013-01-07 Thread clay monroe
Old shoes are a big industry for the local africans. The goodwill has an
outlet store. All the stuff that was not moving at the retail locations or not
up to par for putting on the shelf. Massive rolling bins of clothing, shoes,
toys, what ever. The africans descend upon the shoes and fill 25 bushel trolly
carts with them. Then they go off into a corner, sort them, and dump the
rejects back in the bin. There are at least a half dozen of these guys there
every day. Yammering into their cell phones in loud voices, shoving and being
rude.

The books are attacked by the hipsters and old men. Both have smart phones
with specialized ISBN scanners. Same assault on the bin, fill the trolly and
sort the books. Pretty fast, as they scan, toss, and grab another. Probably
keep a dozen of the hundreds they initially took.

Seattle Goodwill Industries has gone upscale and now have dedicated goodies
identifying staff. They look at just about everything that used to hit the in
store boutique. If it is old, or interesting, it will not ever hit the retail
floor. Goes to the Online Sales wing, which researches, and posts it to
fleabay. They are making a mint. Opening bids are $9.99, unless they know it
is worth much more, then it goes up for lowest accepted appraised value. There
was a Dali sketch, maybe 3x5, posted at $999.00, sold for 9k

I have purchased three pair of used shoes. Two from Goodwill thrift store
and one on ebay. They were all in nearly perfect shape and were Johnston
Murphy and Allen Edmonds. I wouldn't have bought them if they had lots of
wear. I have been very happy with them. I have been doing some research on
this and I think I am going to start selling men's shoes on ebay. But, they
will only be top name brands and in Excellent Shape. I have two pair Allen
Edmonds, Two pair Cole Haans, and two pair of Bostonian (the older version

probably just end up being a hobby that I don't make money on, unless it will
provide me with free dress shoes for work.

I'm joining this late, but I'm also a fan of high quality shoes for the
same reason. A shoemaker can breathe new life into them and they last for
years and years.

I'm a huge fan of Lloyd shoes from Germany. Until recently, I was only
able to buy them in Europe, but there is a shoe store in Pittsburgh that
sells them now:
http://bondstreetshoes.com/

Last pair I bought was on sale for about $150, which is a real steal! I
think I paid over 200EUR for the previous pair.

Here is a good example of an excellent shoe on sale:

they wear out. I just dropped off my favorite Cole Haan shoes for soles and

Anyone have other suggestions for great well made dress shoes that are

[MBZ] OT shoes and repair - wristwatches?

2013-01-07 Thread Mountain Man
How about wristwatches for quality items?
Richarde used to have a watch email list at mbz.org - that was a fun time.
I grew to like the european stuff, primarily mechanical movements
mostly vintage.
How about this wristwatch for nice german mechanical craftmanship - EZM-1:
http://members.chello.nl/~h.mennink/watches/_private/SinnEZM1.htm
http://www.broadarrow.net/ezm1.htm

The swiss, of course, are the movement makers of renown, although,
there are good russian and chinese mechanical movements also.
I like this vintage french aviator wristwatch:
http://www.qahill.com/tz/type20/type20.html
The Type 20/21 chronograph movement is true flyback - retour en vol.
It requires one press to reset and restart the timing of the aviation
leg. Not many watches have that. The panel clock by Mathey-Tissot
Type 12 is also true flyback.

Ok - that is a beginning.
I bet we can drag this out like the shoes or bread thread.
Begin the fun.

My favorites are the 21 jewel watches by Bulova (Swiss made) and Elgin
from the 40's and 50's. I have a couple that can keep time to a
second a day when worn, very nice watches indeed.

Snap back cases, though, so NO water -- in fact, no sweat, either --
so they are dress only, but very nice.

Especially when I can get a gold filled sterling silver cased one for
$12 on Ebay that only needs a new mainspring and a cleaning to run
like new.

I think I mentioned buying a Made-in-the-USA pair of Redwings about 2 years
ago. Best dammed boots I've ever had. Like somebody else said no break in time
at all, super comfortable right out of the box.

Last year I bought a pair of Made in Italy hiking boots at LL Bean. They're not
bad but they're serious hiking boots not the tall sneakers I usually wear.
They're taking FOREVER to break in and they're heavy but have excellent support
and are warm when needed and cool when not. Expensive but if they last several
years they'll be worth it.

My wife wore a pair of LL Bean made in Italy hiking boots after she broke
an ankle - they were the only shoe/boot that eliminated pain. SHe wore them
as her every-day shoes with the exception of special dress-up events (few
and far between for us) for six or seven years. Finally the uppers started
seperating from the soles, so she bought another pair. She loves them. I
don't wear mine that often as we haven't hiked in the mountains that much
recently (hopefully that will change soon), but I expect that they will
last the rest of my life. However, they do require some break-in, they are
quite stiff at first.

[MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Donald Snook
I get the feeling a lot of us on this list appreciate quality products even if
they cost more but last longer. Why else would so many hang on to 10 or 20 year
old Mercedes. I wear dress shoes everyday and have finally discovered that
more expensive shoes are worth it. But, with leather soles they wear out. I
just dropped off my favorite Cole Haan shoes for soles and heels it was $65.
That seems steep. But, they were the most expensive and most comfortable dress
shoes I have ever had. I went ahead and had them do it.

Anyone have other suggestions for great well made dress shoes that are worth
repairing and keeping for years? I want some Allen Edmonds, but I'm not
willing to pay $350 for them at least not yet!

I have a pair of Florsheims I have had for 24 years, though I do not wear

of years ago. That place restitched some of the seams and then resoled
them. Unfortunately, in trimming the sole to the size of the shoe, they
ground off too much on one of the shoes and the stitching on the toe is
already wearing through. With that and the stitching on the top of the
shoes failing, I may not have them repaired again.

I was given a pair of Bates Uniform Footware shoes and am considering
using them as my dress shoes. I just have to figure out how to sterilize
them before I start wearing them (not knowing if the fellow from whom I
got them had problems with Athlete's foot).

The shoe trees I have were a Christmas present 44 years ago.

Lt. Don had a FB post the other day on some shoes he bought second hand. I
don't think they are dress shoes, but the manufacturer may make some.
Going to start breaking in a new pair of shoes
tomorrow. My wife got them for $25 from a friend of hers, who was
selling them for her son. Never been worn. Pretty heavy but seem to be
well constructed and should last a while. Since I'd never heard of the
brand (Mephisto) did a little research. Found the exact shoe. Looks like
 I saved about $400.

marketplace, give him a huge tip, adopt him/her as your long lost child,

Well built shoes are becoming more rare every day. People to repair them

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Two words: Allen Edmonds.

My Dad was an A-E guy all of his life, and I often hassled him about his
expensive shoes. I grew up and got smart.

The trick is to not buy them at list, but wait for the sales. Get on their
online mailing list. They had several online sales in the past month, which
are now expired. Find one of their retailers in your area and get fitted so
you know your size - this saves a lot of hassles with having to guess and
return shoes purchased online.

I wouldn't even have a lot of qualms about buying them at list. Here's why:

I have 6-7 pairs of A-E shoes in my closet right now. I have two more that
they refused to recraft, mainly because of their age. Of the pairs I still
wear, the NEWEST pair was purchased in 1996, with the others ranging in age all
the way back to 1991-2 or thereabouts.

I had the privilege of living in Port Washington, WI, where A-Es are made. If
you're lucky enough to be in the area, the first week of July is their tent
sale. This is the annual meeting for their salespeople, and they put up a
huge tent in front of the plant where they sell discontinued and factory
seconds at as much as 50% off. The salespeople staff the tent, so every person
you speak to knows the shoes better than any retail store clerk will.

The sales people will often point out why a particular shoe is a second, and
believe me, the stuff they showed me was imperceptible to me and probably every
other person who looked at them.

Most of my shoes have been recrafted at least once, which costs around $100
depending on the package you choose.

I can take a pair of brown tasseled wingtips I bought in 1994 for around $200
(a $400 shoe new) and add in the recrafting I had done around 2001 and I have a
shoe that cost me $300 that has lasted close to 20 years (and is still going.)

I do want some new black loafers and maybe another brown shoe, so I am planning
on making a trip to Port Washington in July. As far as I'm concerned, it's
money well spent.

On a related note, one of the finest shoe repair guys in the nation is about 40
minutes away from me in Lakeland, FL. He recrafted one of my pairs of A-Es for
the same price and did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him for any serious
shoe repair.

I get the feeling a lot of us on this list appreciate quality products
even if they cost more but last longer. Why else would so many hang on
to 10 or 20 year old Mercedes. I wear dress shoes everyday and have
finally discovered that more expensive shoes are worth it. But, with
leather soles they wear out. I just dropped off my favorite Cole Haan
shoes for soles and heels it was $65. That seems steep. But, they were
the most expensive and most comfortable dress shoes I have ever had.
I went ahead and had them do it.

Anyone have other

suggestions for great well made dress shoes that are worth repairing
and keeping for years? I want some Allen Edmonds, but I'm not willing
to pay $350 for them at least not yet!

Not a one.

Maybe the CDI engines but probably not until you get to blue tech. The cars
are pretty forgettable in design and reliability. When they divested from
Chrysler, the quality began to increase to the point it was worth investing in
a benz once more. Sadly, they remain nothing special to look at.

We like the older ones because we recall seeing them when younger or lusting
after them as young adults. Maybe a parent or grandparent had one and we have
fond memories. If we think of older folks in a benz now, it is not going to be
a diesel and having not spread the diesel engine throughout the line, you do
not have the depth of models to chose from. All the benz from that period are
E class. The 210 was just ugly

I used to buy brands like Florsheim and Bush/Nunn, which typically lasted me a
year under normal wear in a business environment. Maybe $100 for a good pair,
less if I could find them on sale.

One of the things about A-Es that can't be quantified is that they never have
to break in. That is, they are comfortable from the first time you put them on
- no breaking in, no sore back of the heels, etc., that you have with other
shoes. I don't know if it's the quality of materials or the way they are made,
but this is one part of A-Es that I have never found in another brand of shoes.

Allen-Edmonds are made in Port Washington, WI, and Belgium, WI (little town up
the road from Port Washington.)

Expense is relative. If you take the example I gave on the other list, I have
been wearing a shoe that cost me $300 over its life for over 20 years. Do that
math. It cost me $15/year. For that I'll pay big $$ up front.

Dan

I have to concur about the Allen Edmonds. I have a pair in cordovan leather-
not the color but the leather apparently made from horse hide or something and
let me tell you they are tough!
And don't laugh but during my pimpin' days back in Boston during the late 90's,
I bought a couple of Gucci shoes. They were also made from cordovan leather.
Wow are those shoes tough. I wore them clubbing, to bars, in the rain, snow and
sleet and they held up incredibly well- better than the Allen- Edmonds. Looking
back, I am horrified at what I paid for those shoes but I now realize that they
were a lifetime purchase. I Never have to buy another nice shoe again. For
everyday shoes I now pay $20-30 for whatever Timberland shoe is on clearance at
the Factory Outlet in Freeport, Maine.

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
We had a shoe truck that came to the plant at Kohler once a month. They sold
shoes for the employees on the factory floor. I wandered in one time and asked
if they had any dress safety shoes, which they did. I bought a pair of black
steel toed wing tips. Not sure what brand they were, but I only had to wear
them on the factory floor so they got very little wear.

There was a union steward who was a real dick to all of the white collar
employees. He would walk up and step on the toes of your shoes to see if you
were wearing steel toes - if not, he would file a complaint with the safety
committee.

I told a couple of people I worked with about my new shoes, who then followed
me out to the factory floor. Sure enough, Mr. Dick came walking up and stepped
on the toe of one of my shoes. He had a really strange look on his face when he
realized that I had steel toed shoes.

I tossed a shop towel at him and told him he owed me a shine.
