Good work! I am glad I dumped my vergassers before I had to do stuff

Diesel on.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
April 27, 2017 at 8:41 PM
As the weather forecast is saying it’s going to be hotter than heck
this weekend, I figured I would go ahead and take a swing at replacing
the air meter boot and injectors on the 300SEL when I got home today.

I started around 5:00 and finished around 8:00. It wasn’t a difficult
job, just a lot of fiddly stuff.

I pulled the fuel distributor/air meter as a complete assembly,
including the injector lines. Buy removing the wiring harness gutter I
could lift the whole thing, lines and all, off the engine without a
lot of effort. This went a long way in cutting down
disassembly/reassembly time and also reduced the possibility of
getting dirt in the injection lines.

The boot was intact and undamaged from what I could tell when I
removed everything. So it was probably not my vacuum leak source. I
replaced the hoses from the manifold to the idle air valve and on to
the air meter housing as well. And yes, Peter, even with everything
out of the way getting the hose on the intake manifold was a real PITA….

Pulled all of the injectors, O rings and plastic shields/housings.
Nothing obvious wrong here other than the shields being really sooty
or black. I’m not sure if that’s normal or not. Cleaned the injector
bores in the head. Installed the new shields, O-rings and injectors.

Got the fuel distributor/air meter back on. Holy mother of pearl,
getting the boot over the throttle valve was nothing short of a major
undertaking and not something for those who are easily frustrated. Put
the injector clamps and bolts in place, torqued everything and
reconnected the injection lines. Reconnected the main fuel lines and
fired it up.

Amazing. Idle is amazingly smooth. I can only suspect that the
injectors that were in the engine were slobbering or had bad patterns.
Acceleration is smooth, smooth, smooth as is cruising at speed. I test
drove about 10-12 miles and saw no change in the fuel level, so with
the previous MPG being in the 10-12 mpg range I’m hoping things are
much better with the new injectors. Vacuum is on the far left at idle,
no indication of a vacuum leak from what I can see.

One observation: I didn’t disconnect the fuel pump to relieve pressure
on the fuel system before I started. When I cracked the supply line, I
didn’t get sprayed with fuel - it pretty much just dribbled out. With
this in mind, am I correct in assuming the check valve at the
pump/filter is bad? You do have to crank it for a few seconds when
it’s been sitting, so that makes sense if it is bad…

I’ll drive it this weekend and see how the fuel consumption goes.
Hopefully it’s far better than it has been.

[MBZ] Today's Fun with 300SEL

2017-04-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
As the weather forecast is saying it’s going to be hotter than heck this
weekend, I figured I would go ahead and take a swing at replacing the air meter
boot and injectors on the 300SEL when I got home today.

I started around 5:00 and finished around 8:00. It wasn’t a difficult job,
just a lot of fiddly stuff.

I pulled the fuel distributor/air meter as a complete assembly, including the
injector lines. Buy removing the wiring harness gutter I could lift the whole
thing, lines and all, off the engine without a lot of effort. This went a long
way in cutting down disassembly/reassembly time and also reduced the
possibility of getting dirt in the injection lines.

The boot was intact and undamaged from what I could tell when I removed
everything. So it was probably not my vacuum leak source. I replaced the hoses
from the manifold to the idle air valve and on to the air meter housing as
well. And yes, Peter, even with everything out of the way getting the hose on
the intake manifold was a real PITA….

Pulled all of the injectors, O rings and plastic shields/housings. Nothing
obvious wrong here other than the shields being really sooty or black. I’m not
sure if that’s normal or not. Cleaned the injector bores in the head.
Installed the new shields, O-rings and injectors.

Got the fuel distributor/air meter back on. Holy mother of pearl, getting the
boot over the throttle valve was nothing short of a major undertaking and not
something for those who are easily frustrated. Put the injector clamps and
bolts in place, torqued everything and reconnected the injection lines.
Reconnected the main fuel lines and fired it up.

Amazing. Idle is amazingly smooth. I can only suspect that the injectors that
were in the engine were slobbering or had bad patterns. Acceleration is
smooth, smooth, smooth as is cruising at speed. I test drove about 10-12 miles
and saw no change in the fuel level, so with the previous MPG being in the
10-12 mpg range I’m hoping things are much better with the new injectors.
Vacuum is on the far left at idle, no indication of a vacuum leak from what I
can see.

One observation: I didn’t disconnect the fuel pump to relieve pressure on the
fuel system before I started. When I cracked the supply line, I didn’t get
sprayed with fuel - it pretty much just dribbled out. With this in mind, am I
correct in assuming the check valve at the pump/filter is bad? You do have to
crank it for a few seconds when it’s been sitting, so that makes sense if it is
bad…

I’ll drive it this weekend and see how the fuel consumption goes. Hopefully
it’s far better than it has been.

-D

Nothing wrong with that, M1 would be my second choice. Since this was on sale
for less than M1, I jumped at the opportunity. And it’s the factory
recommended stuff, so you can’t go wrong with it.

The difference in the noise level of the engine with the panel in place was

A big “Thanks!” to Wilton for offering the part to me. Now it’s in a place

Oldest son texts me today that his car (1998 S420) is running rough and is
throwing a CEL. Hmm. I get home and he starts it up. Sounds OK, but he points
out that there is some vibration at idle and it seems to be a little sluggish.

I pop the DAS computer on it, run a full set of diagnostics, and the first
thing I see is a P303 error. Ah-hah! Bad #3 coil.

Weird brand coil on Amazon is under $30, but won’t get here until Saturday
since it’s too late to make their next day cutoff. I dig into Advance Auto’s
web site and find a store nearby that has one along with a new boot (most
places sell these things sans boot, or so it seems.)

Between a 30% off coupon and a $5 SpeedPerks coupon I have the whole bill is
around $70 out the door.

Get home, pop the hood, in under 10 minutes a new coil is installed and he
claims it’s never felt smoother. He says he thinks it’s been going out over a
period of time.

I love those easy fixes.

Coming up this weekend on the W126:

Transmission mount, center vent vacuum actuator and new breather pipe and
O-ring.

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2016-03-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Looking for some low impact stuff to do today.

I had a meter of power steering return line I wanted to get installed, as the
W126’s power steering return lines were mushy and look like they have been
seeping for a while. I also wanted to drain and refill the power steering
system with fresh MB power steering fluid, too.

Got that done. Easy, low impact, a little messy but took me all of maybe a
half hour.

After replacing the grommets on the windshield and headlight washer pumps a few
weeks ago, I noticed the other day when I ran into some rain that the
windshield washer was really weak. I figured I might have a clogged line or
nozzle, so while I had the hood up I figured I would put some power to the pump
as well as run some low pressure air through the lines to see what’s up.

I ran the washer once before I started, and as before, it was pretty wimpy,
barely making it onto the glass.

When I got back under the hood, I noticed some liquid near the passenger side
hood hinge. Ah-ha! The washer line was cracked from age at the hood hinge.

So I pulled the outer jacket back and separated the halves of the washer hose
as much as I could (remember, this is the hose that has the wires for the
nozzle heaters in it.) I found a plastic vacuum line straight through fitting
that was the right size, and was able to separate the hose halves far enough to
get it inserted well into both sides. After drying it off and wiping the hose
and outer jacket off with some 3M Adhesive Remover, I wrapped the hose with
some 3M electrical tape, then did the same with the outer jacket as well.

Windshield washer is working as intended now, spraying vigorously.

It’s starting to warm up here, probably into the 80s today with pretty high
humidity due to a couple of days of rain. I might work on removing the
pinstripe if I feel like doing anything else today…

Started out with a cooling system drain and flush to get all the nasty
stuff out. Ran some errands and the cooling system was dead nuts on 85C
the whole time. Nice!

Decided I would tackle the motor mounts this afternoon.

Driver’s side came out in a heartbeat. Fasteners were at torque, nothing
stuck, just the requisite “snap” to break things loose and out they came.
Took all of maybe 10 minutes.

Moved to the passenger side. Ugh. Turbo and exhaust in the way. Bottom
bolt came loose no problem, one of the top bolts with about three feet of
extension on the ratchet, pop and out it came. Then the back bolt.
Appeared to be nearly impossible to reach from any direction until I
started poking around and found that I could reach my arm into the opening
where the tie rod came through the bottom shield. A little tight, but
after a few minutes I was able to get the last bolt out.

The driver’s side mount wasn’t collapsed too much, maybe an 1/8” or a
little bit more, but the passenger side was deflected more than a 1/4”,
which I thought was pretty substantial. The rubber was cracked in several
places as well. Strangely enough, the heat shield on the passenger side
mount is much smaller, which I thought was sort of weird since the turbo
is directly above it.

So while the car is cold and sitting level again, I’m draining the cooling
system for the last time before filing it with Water Wetter and a 50-50
premix of MB coolant.

The oak trees are starting to come into season, meaning everything is
coated with a film of oak pollen, including my car. Guuess I might try
and sneak a wash in tonight before it gets dark…

After scraping the hood down for the future hood pad installation, I began
to do the thermostat swap.

Despite Curly’s warnings about it being tight, it was really easy to get
to from below. The bottom bolt came right out with minimal effort and the
top bolt was actually easier to break loose from above and then run it out
by hand from below. Start to finish it took me under 30 minutes.

One thing I did find that I’ve never encountered before on a Mercedes: I
went to install the thermostat, and being attentive to the position of the
bleed valve, I attempted to insert the thermostat with the bleed valve
facing up, as I have on every other engine I’ve ever replaced a thermostat
on.

It wouldn’t go in. Strange.

I compared it to the old thermostat, and noticed that there is a cutout in
the part of the thermostat that is the main metal disc. I looked in the
thermostat housing, and sure enough, there is a projection on the inside
of the housing that interfaces with this notch. I rotated the thermostat
to align with the notch, and in it went. I did note that the bleed valve
was now positioned around the 3:00 o’clock position when the housing was
bolted up to the engine.

Other than that I took note that the car had the evil green stuff in it,
which was strange, as it didn’t look green in the reservoir. I filled it
back up with water, because this is Florida. I’ll drive it tomorrow a
little, drain it out, fill it with water again, drain it, then put the
good MB stuff (which is now blue) in it along with a bottle of
WaterWetter.

After that was done I took the car for a short drive around the
neighborhood. The temp came right up to 85C, spiked up to about 110C for a
minute, then came right back down to 85C and stayed there like the needle
was nailed in place. This proves that the old thermostat was definitely
toast, as it wouldn’t get to 85C if I drove it with my foot to the floor
for 3-4 miles. It would also drop down to 60C when I came to a stop or
idled for more than a minute or two.

After all this was done it was time for some fun stuff.

I pulled the aftermarket radio nightmare and the ACC panel as the ACC unit
had a lamp out. Replaced the lamp and got the panel back in place.
Installed an ashtray I snagged on eBay in what remains of the opening for
it. Nothing to anchor it to, as the black plastic bar that goes across
the bottom of the opening is gone.

Once that was in place I got the aftermarket radio jammed in the radio
opening with nothing holding it in place. his is also due to the hack who
put the radio in cutting out the plastic “box” all everything that went
with it to install the aftermarket radio. I’m not sure what, of anything,
I can do to restore some of the stuff they cut out. At least for now it
looks stock again and doesn’t have the gosh awful box the radio was
installed in.

Had some stainless steel screws for the license plate but they were too
small. I got #8s and looks like they’re #10s. Trip to the Ace tomorrow.

and doesn’t have the gosh awful box the radio was installed in.

Had some stainless steel screws for the license plate but they were too small.
I got #8s and looks like they’re #10s. Trip to the Ace tomorrow.

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2016-02-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got a used window regulator for the driver’s window, which does the
“pop-pop-pop” and doesn’t go all the way up.

Removed the inner door panel and was pleased to see that not too many of the
top edge hooks were broken off - only 3 of 5. Everything else was intact, and
the interior of the door very clean and dry. Even the moisture barrier was
still glued in place from the factory from what I could tell.

I discovered that there are early and late window regulators, too. I had an
early one form the knackers, my car, as you would expect, used the later
version. Dang it.

Once again Amazon Prime comes to the rescue. New Dorman regulator for $45 by
Monday, another $5 to have it tomorrow. I ponied up the difference since it
would give me a day to leave the inner door panel off and allow me to glue the
tabs back on the door at the top. The speaker grille had a couple of hooks
broken on it, all of which I was able to recover from inside as well. These
have been glued and are drying, waiting to be reinstalled tomorrow after I get
the new regulator in.

Nice to see the later W126 models have speaker enclosures on the door, which
not only make things sound better, they protect the back of the speaker from
the elements that might make it inside the door.

It is low. But when the alternator is spinning slow, it's
output voltage can be low if the load is high.

Far more significant is with the engine spinning faster, does
the voltage ever get to 14.4 V?

Really? Does that mean you usually do _not_ have jumper
cables in the car?

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2016-02-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got tires on the car. Couldn’t start it after they were done. Had to put
their roll around charger on it for 15 minutes and it cranked right up.

Brought it home and started in on the AC, which was in need as it was low. It
did build up pressure but not enough to get the low pressure switch to close.
I evacuated the system and pulled a vacuum - 30" instantly. I left the pump on
it for about 45 minutes, then closed off the valves and turned off the pump a
couple hours later it was still holding a vacuum.

So I charge it. Dump a couple of cans into it, getting about 45-50 degrees in
the center vent at 1500-2000 rpm. Good.

Go to pull the service gauges off and the low pressure Schrader valve sticks
open. Dang it! I get the service valves back on it, but it lost enough that
it’s not cooling. I operate the service valves a couple of times and now it
seems to hold.

I ordered a set of valve cores and new caps for delivery tomorrow. Thank you,
Amazon!

Still not sure about this battery issue. Getting about 13.8 VDC at the battery
terminals at idle, which seems a little low. I’m charging the MB battery up to
see how it works out. Just as a precaution I tossed my jumper cables into the
trunk. I’ll back into my spot at work tomorrow, too, just in case.

Now I think I’ll dig into the cruise control after I put a new G. Daimler
sticker on the windshield. The original was totally cooked and shrunk about
10%. Will probably do some interior cleaning, too - I haven’t yet pulled the
back seat to see what kind of surprises there might be there….
