Had never seen the movie. We watched it today. Glossed over so many details in
the book I sort of thought it was hard to follow. But I guess that’s usually
the case when a movie is made from a book.

That’s an excellent book. There’s (is/was) a lot that goes on under the surface
around here

You need to go back and follow the Murdaugh business for some good Suthrun good
ol boy corruption and crime. There’s a Netflix documentary about it that’s
sorta OK but the Murdaugh Murders podcast is excellent — start at the beginning
and listen to them all. They’ve got them on YouTube now too. They all lived
down about halfway between Charleston and Beaufort SC which isn’t too far from
Savannah. And there’s more coming on that whole story.

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-05-03 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Perhaps more info than you want, but this is a decent write-up on lead/acid
batteries followed by another one a chargers:

A look at the differences between auto and aircraft batteries, plus some
tips on maintenance.
Bob Fritz - May 20, 2009

The engine wont start, or it turns slowly. But your battery is only two
years old, and it was expensive! Dang it…the thing should work, and you
should be flying right now.

You’ve been there, done that and cursed the battery. Sometime during the
process of pulling the old one out and installing a new one, you probably
toyed with the idea of going to an auto-supply store and buying a cheap
battery; its only used for starting and you could hand-prop the plane, so
why incur the expense? How different could they be?

With that as my premise, I went off to the battery manufacturers with a few
basic questions: Are airplane batteries different from automobile
batteries? If not, why the higher cost? If so, then how are they different,
and do they require different maintenance? The short answers: Yes, airplane
batteries are different; and, yes, they require different maintenance.
Into the Way-back Machine

First, let’s review the nature of the beast. Although Ben Franklin coined
the term, and the first battery was built before 250 BCE, in Baghdad, the
first practical battery was invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston
Plant. Today there are several variations on it with techno-names such as
recombinant gas and absorbed glass mat, but at their heart, they’re still
based on Plants idea.

Our friend Plant was fiddling around in the lab with lead, which seemed to
be very resistant to the effects of acid. He discovered that, though the
lead wasn’t eaten away as were most other metals when dunked in acid, the
combination did generate a voltage. More significantly, he discovered that
this battery could be discharged and then re-charged. But he was stuck at
2.2 volts per circuit. It didn’t matter if the lead plate had more surface
area or a greater thickness; it was 2.2 volts per plate. We’re still there.

Raising the voltage was easily done; just add more plates and connect the
positive lead on plate #1 to the negative lead of plate #2. Connect the
voltmeter to the remaining poles, and you see 4.4 volts. Put six sets of
plates together in this fashion, and you get 13.2 volts.

My expert on the subject of batteries, Skip Koss, at Concorde, laughed when
I asked why its called a 12-volt battery if its really 13.2 volts. Ive no
idea, he said. Tradition! I got a call from a guy wanting to know what was
wrong with his battery; it was down to 11.5 volts and wouldn’t start the
airplane. I had to tell him it was a dead battery, but I couldn’t convince
him that the numbers don’t really tell the story.

Before going further, lets define a few terms and offer a couple of
analogies:

Voltage (V) is the potential to do work; think of it as water pressure,
measured in PSI.

Current (amps) indicates how many electrons are flowing through a
conductor, measured in Amp-hour (Ah). Multiply amps times hours and you get
amp-hour. Think of this as gallons per hour such as in a large river.

Power (watts) is amps multiplied by volts, measured in gallons per hour at
some psi. A large, fast-flowing pipe filled with water under pressure.

Watt-hours. All of the above multiplied give you the equivalent of gallons
per hour for a number of hours. Visualize a large fast-flowing river able
to flow for a lot of hours.

Its about as obvious as a thumb tack on a church pew that rating a battery
in amp-hours is not the best measure of the battery; watt-hours would be
ideal, but the industry is stuck with Ah. Maybe thats short for Ah, well.
Trade-offs and Compromises

Plant also discovered that with plates having a greater surface area, he
got more power (amperage) to turn heavy loads; with thicker plates, he got
a longer discharge time. Think of the plate as a sponge for electrons; with
a lot of surface area the electrons are on the surface; a thick sponge has
them deeper in.

The other trade-off is in the system voltage. If you have a 1200-watt
device, you need a combination of voltage multiplied by amperage: W = V x
A. But as amperage goes up, the wiring gets hot. 12 volts x 100 amps = 1200
watts, and that will definitely heat the wiring. Ever notice how hot jumper
cables get?

But if you raise the voltage, you can lower the amperage: 24 volts x 50
amps = 1200 watts. Now you can use smaller gauge wiring. The only problem
is that 24-volt devices are more expensive.

Think on that for a minute, and you’ll see that these factors can be traded
around according to the requirement. A large airplane needs to have a
deep-discharge capacity to run flaps, avionics and landing gear in case the
generating system quits. That means a 24-volt system (or more) and a
battery with thick plates for deep discharge. (Remember that how its wired
internally, not plate geometry, determines the voltage.) Every pound and
dollar counts for

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-04-30 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
There's a lot of thermal mass in a battery. Could still be warm from
the charging, plus slight heating from the draw-down.

What is 'tests good'? That covers a lot of ground, all the way from
"has two terminals and isn't gushing through a hole in the side", to
brand new.

There are six cells, any one of which could be sub-optimal and thus
rendering the battery _not_ good. Increased series resistance; reduced
plate capacity, due to erosion or a break in the plate structure; electrical
leakage;
poisoned cell chemistry...

'Tests good'? All of those, and more, times six...

To test a battery thoroughly requires access to the individual cell terminals,
and the electrolyte, of each of the six cells. And even that won't tell you
much
about electrical leakage, though you can infer that from reduced voltage and
capacity when compared to other, known good, cells, starting from a known
state of charge.

In most cases, 'tests good' is about as reliable as "idiot light is not on."
My wife's SL's battery 'tested good', meaning started the car without problems,
until the time it exploded when she hit the key!

A _thorough_ test for most consumer goods probably costs more than just
purchasing a new whatsis. Only done in laboratories, usually in-house at
the manufacturers'. The rest of the time we just rely on quick/cheap litmus
tests. If it 'tests' good, but is still acting up, we just replace it and move
on.

Run your weak battery flat. Maybe several times. If there's a weak cell the
rest of the battery will attempt to reverse-charge it once the terminal voltage
goes below 10V. That'll do it in in short order, car batteries don't have
internal
BMS for self-protection like laptop batteries do.

So had the battery on the charger all night and came out to the shop this
morning and it’s only at 80% charged. Was warm to the touch, more so than
normal with a battery on a charger I would think. Still tests good. Hooked it
up to a car and left head lights on all afternoon. It’s down to 12.17 right now
and with it just powering the lights battery is slightly warm. Should it be
warm at all? Will leave lights on all night and see how it tests tomorrow. Will
charge it up and repeat until I can get it to test bad, then will take it back
to Walmart.

I've not had a problem with NAPA batteries but I will say that in my experience
they cannot be relied upon to test them.

I had a Volvo-branded battery in my XC90 that would seem to discharge rapidly,
often overnight.

Drove it to NAPA, they tested it, and said it looked good. When I tried to
start the car to leave, it would not start. They gave me a jump with a booster
pack, and suggested I get it tested at a battery shop. I drove over to
Interstate and they tested it, it was bad, and I bought a new battery there. No
problems since.

likely because it was sitting in the car too long not started after I
bought it.  Its still under warranty so I am trying to get it

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-04-30 Thread M. Mitchell Marmel via Mercedes
I had a NAPA house brand and the damned thing would go dead overnight. I
would jump it, take it to NAPA, they'd say it's fine. The drive over was
enough to charge it enough to make it look fine. Finally had it die on the
road. AAA driver said it was NFG. Went over to Walleyworld and got a new
one. No problems to date.

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-04-29 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes
Went to do a periodic maintenance charge on my AA AGM battery one day
last summer, and it was wet around the negative terminal.
Cleaned it up with a paper towel, charged it, and it corroded my
negative battery clip on the charger.
Since then, it just keeps puking acid. A sealed battery that I paid
extra so I could put it in a W140 or W210 without any acid fumes. Never
been installed in a car. But the warranty expired before it started
puking, so I paid something like $150 for a battery that will never see
a car.

I’ve used Advance Auto’s batteries for some years, and only had one instance
when one failed prematurely. I would add that it was replaced outright at no
cost, as I think it was within the first two years.

You get what you pay for.

I used to buy Interstate and never had any problem getting the rated life out
of them.

Lately I've been buying NAPA's house brand and had good luck with them so far.

Yea, but it should not discharge to 12.1 or so volts after a couple of

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-04-29 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

Walmart seems to be the cheapest place to get batteries these days.

This battery was in a car I bought but went completely dead.  I am not
sure if it went completely dead because it was discharging but most
likely because it was sitting in the car too long not started after I
bought it.  Its still under warranty so I am trying to get it replaced.
I guess I am just going to have to kill it completely and try again in a
month or so.

Re: [MBZ] Walmart AGM battery

2022-04-29 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So they put in on their charger and said it charged up, after 30 minutes. Yet
it discharged just sitting there. I will take it back home and put it back on
the charger but as soon as removed I’m sure it will be discharged within a
couple of week. What is the quickest way I can ruin this battery so it tests
bad and they exchange it?

I have a battery out of a car that is a Walmart AGM battery dated
12/20. This was the 140 that I could not get into the trunk and the
cables were not tight. Car sat for many months and drained it dead.
Used a pair of jumper cables connected to a good battery (battery out of
the car at this point as I was able to get into the trunk), and hooked
charger up to it. This got it charged up and unhooked 2nd battery.
Since then, both my pulse tech and various harbor freight smart charger
will never bring it to a full charger per the chargers. I hook up my
electronic battery tester and it tests good. Tried my old fashioned
carbon tester and it also showed good. Hook back up to charger and
leave it overnight and it always errors out saying overtime charge. On
the pulse tech, after being on it a certain amount of time I have
noticed it gets to the 75% light but eventually just shows bad battery.
I have not stuck it in a car to see if it will start one but I assume it
will. Why would the chargers never show it fully charged, but the volts
show 12.8-13 volts right after removing from charger, and it tests
good. Should I return it to Walmart and see if I can get it exchanged?
I am assuming they will but a tester on it and it will test good so they
wont warranty it despite it supposedly never reaching full charge.

There are ways around that.

And, BTW, it's fall rebate time.
If you have a use for a M1 oil filter and the extended performance oil, $36-17
rebate is a good deal. I have a M1 (Chinese) filter that I'm going to put in
the ML, I have no hope of hitting the full 10,000 miles before the calendar
life is up on the oil, so I don't think Mann Fleece is absolutely necessary.
The only M1 MBZ filter that I can use and Advance sells is the M1C-253,
replaces HU 718/5X for my V6s.

could not figger out what to make of our store, and would not speak to
us. He talked a long time to Buzz at the hardware store, and told him
exactly how to survive. Now, 30+ year later, the hardware store (and
Buzz) is still there, but many other stores are gone. Buzz did exactly
what live sam told him to do. Most businesses are not that lucky.

But the brainwashing was true. One lady who worked for Buzz drove to
wallyland to buy chewing gum (one pack) rather than walk to the
drugstore that was closer than the car. Simply because she was
brainwashed.

We've seen this pretty dramatically at camp. They built a Lowes in Presque Isle

went to Lowes a couple times but their service stinks and fortunately the
better lumber yard in Caribou (Collins, same as the Senator) stepped up their

I'll pay a little extra to get dry lumber from Collins'. Actually once you
spend $100 they usually adjust the price to be the same or a little cheaper
than Lowes...

I totally understand your lumberyard situation. Where I grew up in Indiana we
had an 84 Lumber that is still open, within sight of a Lowe’s. The 84 does a
booming business to this day. If I wanted a 2x4 or a sheet of plywood, I
would’t give Lowe’s a second thought.

4,000.

Before they had even broken ground, WalMart corporate representatives were
canvassing locally owned businesses.  They came in, checked out the business
and it’s inventory either surreptitiously or blatantly, and then came back
within a few weeks, warning them that they were probably going to be out of
business soon.  For some this accomplished nothing other than to terrorize the
owners.  To this day I still wonder what their motivation was.  For others,
like some good friends and neighbors of ours who owned one of the two
pharmacies in town, it was worse.

Two WalMart employees walked into their pharmacy one morning at the opening of
business and asked to see the owner.  They then told him, point blank and
without any warm up or warning, that he had two choices:  He could sell his
customer list to them for a stated price, or he could go up against them and
they would run him out of business.

This was a couple who had their lives invested in the pharmacy and were
probably within about five years of selling out and retiring.  This is what
they had done for over 40 years in our town.  They did a wonderful job, were
competitive, and as a local business kept our money at home and invested in our
community.  They were active in the community in a lot of ways, too.  And they
were like family.  If you forgot your checkbook when you were picking something
up, they just stuck a receipt on the wall next to the register so you could pay
it the next time you were in.  We had a neighbor who was a  pediatrician - she
had a patient that needed a prescription late on a Sunday night, and the
closest 24 hour pharmacy was 15 miles away in Mequon.  These folks went in that
night and got her the prescription with nothing more than a phone call.

I realize there’s a lot of emotion here, but if you look beyond that, there are
things that WalMart can never, or will ever, be.  These people dedicated their
lives to our community to make it what it was.  That has value far beyond what
any corporate retailer can bring to the table.

They shuttered the pharmacy two months later and took a major financial loss
that affected them for the rest of their lives in the process.  WalMart got
their customer list as part of the deal.

The owner went to work at a KMart pharmacy in Milwaukee, 25 miles away, so he
could bring in some income until he reached retirement age a few years later.

The other pharmacy, which had locations in other towns around the area, closed
up this location.  Marty, the pharmacist there, told me on the QT one day when
I saw him around town that when the WalMart people came into their pharmacy he
kicked them out and told them to go F themselves.

We had a busy little downtown area, with a shoe store, men’s store, two
jewelers, dry cleaners, butcher shop and other small businesses, all of which
were quite successful.  WalMart pretty much killed all of them except for the
butcher and dry cleaners, as WalMart had nothing to compete with them on.

And yes, I’m still bitter about it more than 20 years later.  I patronized
every one of those businesses until they closed up.  I still do to this day by
buying meat from the butcher shop and shipping it to Florida.

Sadly, it’s like URO brand parts.  People will gladly pass by service and
quality to save a nickel.

Furthermore Wal-Mart is one of the few places I've been able to buy Made in USA
gun cases for the same price the river of big women charges for a made in China

I still hate the Wal-martians. The few times I go I try to get there within an

You can still do what Mitch suggested and get the $30.00 back.

Buy a second battery online with in-store pickup.
Take the $80 receipt for the first battery with you when you pick it up.
Take the second battery to the service desk and return it with the first
battery's receipt.

Seen any $15 off on a $50 purchase coupons from in the mail lately?
They're having 'half off your first case' on a lot of the store brand stuff
again this week.

https://www.chewy.com/s?rh=brand_facet%3AAmerican+Journey%2Cc%3A325

I don't buy cans from Chewy, but with the dry dog food, that 50% off promotion
got me half off on a bag of grain free food, a bag of limited ingredient grain
free, and a bag of rice and meat food. Ended up paying $30-35 for three bags
(76lb) of high quality food with "50% off your first bag" "10% off for
autoship" and "$15 off on $50" when I bought my first 3 bags.

I don't know if Fedex Ground can get a case of cat food to you without denting
it badly or not.

Now that Petsmart bought Chewy, they charge sales tax in Michigan, probably in
every state.

I returned a battery to Walmart once and they wouldn't give me my core back, so

Our local Mercado del Wal offers online grocery shopping with delivery to
your car in their parking lot (free now, vs. $5 at local grocery chains).
Wonder if I can add something non-grocery like motor oil and also get that

Ran out of blank DVDs last year.
Walmart had some Memorex for $14.88
So I went to Walmart, where they were $21.88.
Huh? Take a spindle to the price checker, $21.88.
Excuse me, can you price match this? It's $14.88 at Walmart.com
Kid whips out his phone, sees it for $14.88, and gives me the price match.

They're trying to use monopoly pricing models with customer discrimination.
People who compare online get competitive prices, people who just buy crap get
screwed. Sam Walton is long dead, and so are the principles that built Walmart.

The 5-year old Group 26 battery in my standby generator died. A little on-line
shopping showed Walmart had them, in stock, for about $50 but the price was $80
when I got to the cash register. If I had bought online (for $50) I could have
picked up the same battery at the same store and saved $30. In fact, if I had
been thinking faster, I should have cancelled the sale at the register, bought
online with my cell phone, and picked up that same battery. I had no idea
there was such a disparity between online and store prices.

You should put together a Walmartian outfit and put a Wallyworld tag on
the front of your car, Wilton.
Then you can walk around without attracting attention and probably make

[MBZ] Walmart Views

2014-04-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Hi:

I have read with interest your considered views on Wally's world. I have
been in their store, but I don't enjoy the experience. I do go there for M1
and for .22 lr ammo, but those are items I don't need very frequently. I
tolerate the experience only because I can enter and leave the store via the
tire sales door in the back, and do not have to run the gauntlet of all
their departments to do so. I buy all my groceries at 1 of 3 stores:
Chuck's Produce (a local company), Costco, and Winco (a PNW small chain). I
never think of Wally's for purchasing food. I prefer the little Ace store
for hardware. If it's not in stock there I can order online and have it
delivered to my neighborhood store for free.

That said, I don't think Wally's is any better or worse as an employer than
many other companies that pay low wages. Everyone needs somewhere to start
out in the workplace. People should make sure that this class of employment
is not their dead-end. Most of us did not expect to raise a family on the
wages we were earning at our first job. Even so, it is possible to survive
in a very frugal lifestyle on surprisingly little income (and I have done so
at times).

DIYers heaven (not just Mercedes DIYers) would be a Walmart on the

We have a minimum wage that people earn, it's not a hell of a lot but
it's better than letting employers do what they want.

There are also awards in place to define holiday pay and such.
Problem is that wages are not keeping up with inflation, a lot of which
is caused by increases in utilities and fines.

It seems to be a vicious cycle, people get paid less (in real terms)
thus have to cut costs.
Purchasing gets concentrated into a few big box stores, these stores
have the power to set lower wages thus the wages drop further.

You get to contribute to the monies going to the employees in one way

Seattle school district has been severely underfunding vocational classes for a
few decades. They had a reputation as dumping grounds, and the administration
wanted to push all kids to universities. Most of the shop teachers and support
staff moved on because they got unfunded. Now that STEM is big, the district
is thinking some more about maybe doing something so that it has employable
products at the end of 14 years.

Other districts had been keeping their programs intact, so they got the extra
state funding that the egg head idiots passed by. In future there will be kids
able to find jobs as nursing assistants, techs and carpenters. That should put
the illegals on notice to vacate the jobs

Plantation v. small farmer. Probably a bunch more workers in the fields, but
no more initiative and self reliance, since the Massuh and foreman are doing
the thinking for them. The small guy may have been less effective, but
everybody knew him and he had ties to the community. I have found the big box
stores have what they sell, where the small town shops have what you needed.
The hardware store guy knew the particulars of the region, so did not load
shelves with stuff some stooge in Atlanta says to floor.

The same sort of service you got from the small town MD, the pharmacist, and
other "personal" relationships that are no longer available with HMO, big box,

And a shark-bite can be installed on a pipe that has water in it -
unlike a sweat fitting. My journeyman plumber friend says his shop
is still required to use sweat fitting unless there is enough water
in the pipe to interfere with a good solder joint.

Seems PEX is displacing copper in most places. I hear good things
about it's flexibility and ability to stretch and not burst when
frozen - but I'm still quite fond of copper. Maybe my nasty
experience with Quest plastic pipe has soured me excessively on
non-copper pipes.

In my humble opinion Mao may be clinically depressed, which is very
common among people who have lost their jobs. They don't go out and
interview for jobs because of their depressed state. Mao's depressing
"philosophy of life" that older workers should leave the world for
younger workers is another possible symptom of depression.
The only thing that a person on one of these lists can do to help
another person with similar problems is to tell them where they can get
help. Here is a suggestion for people with problems such as clinical

be real jobs - there is lots of that in the listings.

as i now reside full time in south florida, my need for NC mill wool socks
has gone from limited to non existent

i used to have my clothes made by an old woman in the hood from north
carolina sourced cloth, but she just stopped working at the youthful age
of

93, leaving me to the fat man catalog and offshore clothing (most of which
has been really good. the only items i ever got made in china, though,
fell apart after a couple of wearings). i figured it wasn't that big of a
problem as i'd someday shrink back to carhartt size, but i now learn that
even the most iconic of american work clothes is now made offshore
