[MBZ] conversion of diesel-fueled engines to natural gas.

2011-08-08 Thread Jerry Herrman
Is it too early to ask the collective opinion of this apparently new technology
that is available to retrofit current diesel engines from dinosaur-diesel fuel
to clean burning natural gas? Not sure of the name of the company, but I hear
that Caterpillar and Cummins will be using this technoogy. Anyone know more
about this and how it works?

[MBZ] conversion of diesel-fueled engines to natural gas.

Jerry,
I'd switch even my old diesels for synthetic diesel. It's cleaner, more power,
better mileage, but I don't expect to see it. It's better to try to create
something else rather than what could be. And even our old diesels would run on
synthetic diesel without costly mods.

Are we talking about running diesel engines on CNG (I'd only heard of that with
spark ignition engines), or are we talking about synthesizing diesel from NG?

I have some experience with that program. About 12 years ago our local
transit system converted several buses to LNG [Liquified Natural Gas] to
join the "clean is green" movement. The engines ran OK, delivery and fill
systems worked fine, however, power and mileage lost the match. Total BTU
of LNG vs Diesel equation vs costs to convert, store, fill, and deal with
the whole mess only worked because it was done on a government paid "money
is no object" program. As soon as the "special money" ran out back to
diesel.

Cant imagine how that would work in todays economy for an individual with
one or two vehicles, dependent upon the one LNG filling station within 100
miles of home.

Your decision, don't shoot the messenger.

Re: [MBZ] conversion of diesel-fueled engines to natural gas.

2011-08-09 Thread Dan Penoff
Diesels have been modified to run on NG for some time in the transmission line
and drilling industry. This is mainly due to cheap and readily available gas
supplies at the point of origin.

Keep in mind that the decreased power output was offset by oversizing the prime
mover, with the resulting costs being justified through the minimal expense of
the fuel source.

Not an ideal arrangement, but taking into consideration the situation, it makes
good sense from a cost/benefits standpoint.

I believe if you take a gasoline engine and raise the compression ratio, you can
get better power than with gasoline (but range is still a problem with
compressed natural gas)

15-20 years back, Dick Guldstrand was showing drawings of a proposed ultra high
performance CNG fueled Corvette GS.

This link mentions it in passing, and implies that CNG Corvettes actually exist:

Commonly done in the generator and industrial engine market. Wreaked a lot of
havoc because there were two different pistons used for the same engine,
depending on the type of fuel used.

Same issue here, but funny how the Air Quality issue went away as soon as
the federal funds were sucked out. City instead spend 6.8 Billion of Federal
money on a "light rail" system... which immediately started losing money...
lots of money.

If the government spent 6.8 billion on planting trees to breathe carbon
dioxide the impact would have been more "green" but No...
couldn't think like that.
