I had a laptop that did that. One of the connectors was bad -- ended up
costing more to fix than it was worth. It would act like you said yours
does - "click" and it was gone... no warning, no sound, no nothing -
just Off. Since I assume you are working on a desktop you might have a
connector, plug or similar either loose or damaged.

Good luck -

Sounds like an intermittent problem in the motherboard. You might try a fan
blowing right on the MB to see if that prevents the problem. Of so, it's
something thermal and you'll probably play hell finding it. I had similar
symptoms with two PCs that were fixed by "new" motherboards from online
surplus places.

On the other hand, maybe you'll be lucky and spot a fractured solder joint
that opens when hot.

Download Ultimate Boot CD and use the vendor specific hard drive long

i have seen plenty of hard drives fail SMART tests but work completely
fine. sometimes it is just a matter of what testing they support. i have
not seen a bad hard drive make the computer shut off. i would be looking
at failed/failing components such as motherboard and daughter cards
including the connections between them that may support charging, etc.

since you have 2 of these you could try replacing parts from one to the

Lenovo has a very detailed hardware manual on their support site for every
model. The manual will enable anyone with normal skills to R&R any
component. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully, some steps are not
intuitive.

Bad battery charging circuit then. Don't know if it's a separate part like
it is in a Mac or not, but if it is, it can be easy or nearly impossible to
change, depending on the design.

On my old TiBook it was easy accessed by removing the bottom cover, on the
14" G4 replacement required removing nearly the entire guts of the laptop.

When you boot up the lappy do you feel any air coming from the exhaust port?
If not then the fan is clog.
I replaced the fan in a HP lappy with the same processor a few weeks ago.
Unit would power up then shut down after a min or two. Out came the
canned air. Blew out the
fan intake ans exhaust. Fired it back up and same problem. Removed the
case and found the exhaust
port has about 3/8 inch of fuzz packed into it, cleaned it out and
tested the fan. It was so clogged up
it would barely turn. Ordered an new one and replaced it and the heat
sink compound on the

processor. Customer very pleased.

The lower the better. 50 deg.C is OK, 70 deg.C is not.

GPU = Graphics Processor Unit.

In other words, the processor that runs the display. It's a separate processor
(from the main processor) in most laptops and desktops.

I'm not familiar with that model, but you can test for this type of failure
by pressing on the palmrest where the GPU is located. This should tell you
whether the PU is making intermittent contact. I would think that Lenovo

Which model Lenovo? Which GPU (Intel or ATI)? Some surface mount GPUs fail
eventually on some models caused by MoBo flexing. This will show those
symptoms.

I found it most helpful when I was working out in the schools and some kid
would bugger up the admin account trying to get into the machine. It has a
very good DOS based utility for resetting the default Admin account in Windows.

Some of the hard drive utilities are a little dated, but still handy. If this
can't start up a machine, you're pretty much done.

I have a widget that sits on the desktop that tells me how hard the CPU
is working, as well as how much RAM is being used and if it goes into
swap. Right now the CPU is sitting on 1% and goes to 6% as I type, RAM
is at 34% and swap is 0%.
My guess would be flaky motherboard, all the problems I have had with
computers are motherboard or hard drives failing. Power supply (dying
battery) is another thing but I don't use laptops much.

Re: [MBZ] hardware testing

2012-12-24 Thread Dieselhead
Does anybody know of a program (prefer free) that will test all the
hardware in a PC? Memory, MB etc? I got a laptop that will
randomly shut off with no warning. Not sure if its a memory
problem, getting too hot or something else.

memtest will test memory

the mfgr may have a diagnostic or at least a temp monitor available.
