He’s had it for a while. I don’t think he’s that motivated. He wasn’t even
interested in discussing a counter offer. I tried to see where he might go to
with it, and he just kept saying, “It’s $1900 FIRM, like the ad says.”

Not a lot you can do to negotiate with someone like that. Might as well move
on.

Re: [MBZ] 91 300SEL ???

2017-02-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So here’s how the day has gone so far….

Texted Tony. He was very pleasant, thanked me for my offer, but said no. Oh
well, can’t blame a guy for trying…

So off to Spring Hill I went. Not a bad drive, about an hour and 20 minutes or
so, about 2/3 interstate and the rest two lane rural road with a tall speed
limit. A nice cruise for the 350SDL.

Car was as described cosmetically. Owner is a German guy who is up in years
and knows the car pretty well. He was frightfully honest and walked around the
car with me as I inspect it and essentially listed off all the stuff he knew of
that were issues. They were somewhat lengthy….

LR caliper is seized from sitting
AC won’t hold a charge more than a day or two, original compressor
Fuel door vacuum actuator leaks
Trunk seal has a pinhole near the top edge which is covered with electrical
tape. No leakage into the trunk, he caught it when it started apparently
All four tires are relatively new Michelins from Dead Sam’s but one sounds like
the belt is letting loose
RR window is funky and doesn’t like to move down
At the last inspection his mechanic said one of of the hard lines to the
transmission cooler has a pinhole leak. Owner says it doesn’t drip and he
hasn’t had to top it off, so it must not be anything significant.
He also said something about a thermal switch on the transmission having failed
and it not wanting to upshift until it got warm. It’s been bypassed and the
transmission shifts normally ??
Driver’s side bolster and armrest are worn
Top timing cover seal leaks, of course
Needs an upper radiator hose

He had pretty comprehensive records that confirmed he was getting right at
about 22 mpg per tank using premium fuel with most of those miles being at
highway speeds.

The cosmetics of the car are very good. Paint is all original and still has
good shine - no clearcoat, thank goodness. No rust anywhere. Door bottoms are
pristine and drains are clear. Suspension rubber looks good, isn’t dried or
cracking. Body rubber is equally solid, with no indication of drying or
cracking. Windshield has been replaced and is clean and not sandblasted.
Owner said the car has been garaged for most of its life as far as he knew, and
appearances would suggest it’s true.

Road test went well. Car performed well and other than the RR caliper which
was noisy due to a dragging pad the suspension was tight, it had good
acceleration, the transmission shifted as expected and crisply and it tracked
straight and true. Cruise control worked.

It had some electrical gremlins, most of which I would attribute to it not
being driven in some time and a week of somewhat damp days and high humidity.
Tinkering with some of the (aluminum) fuses for a minute or two brought back
some of the missing functions, so that isn’t a big concern.

Four owners including this one, nearly all of the records. Head gasket, valve
guides and seals were done around 196k - roughly 100k ago. No sign of oil in
the exhaust. Valve cover paint is toast, as is the stupid spark plug wire
gutter on the cover. What a crappy setup. Transmission fluid was the correct
tint, proper level and had no burnt smell.

A response to the burner account said they would accept $1500. I’m thinking an
offer of $1200, as I emphasized the lengthy list of stuff it needed to be 100%
again, and the seller agreed with me about it as we went over the list. This
is his motivation for selling - he rarely drives the car and it needs a lot of
little niggly things that collectively will cost him more than he wants to put
into the car - that and he’s looking to buy a used minivan or small truck to
be able to haul stuff.

I’m on the fence on this one, guys.….

Those are different levels of technology. I'd guess the 302 was 20
years newer, from a time where they were trying somewhat to g et more
efficiency.

the M103 , 420 and 560 are all contemporary, so no technical, or
efficiency differences.

We had a couple of Willys Utility Wagons when we lived in Colorado.

The first had a "Hurricane Six" inline six cylinder. It had a modest
amount of power and got horrible fuel mileage (10 - 12 mpg).

The second had a Ford 302 V-8. It had a LOT more power and got noticably
better fuel mileage (16 - 18 mpg) to boot.

Re: [MBZ] 91 300SEL

2017-02-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I was referring to the 240D, that you say has peeling clear on the
hood. That is the one to get, not the 300SEL.

I don't think the 300TE ever got 22.

Dan--- via Mercedes
February 17, 2017 at 2:01 PM
Yeah, I was thinking that as well.

The 300SEL owner says they get about 22 mpg, most of which is highway,
which makes sense.

Hmm. I may go look at it tomorrow. I'll call them tonight and get some
more details.

That 240D is tempting, too. Too bad it's in the opposite direction.

GET IT and get the hood repainted if that bothers you. It will be
good for a lifetime if he keeps it away from salt. There is no

Thanks, Larry.

They put some more pictures up at my request. I'm still waiting to see
if they can give me any mileage info:

It's nearly 90 minutes away. Not sure if I want to blow four hours of

I might go look at the 300k 300SEL this weekend.

Does anyone have any direct experience with the M103 in the W126
chassis as far as fuel mileage? I'm really curious about this, but
don't have any real information short of anecdotal stuff.

Not actual 126 info, though I had a 1989 300E 2.6 M103. Same thirst as a three

YMMV.

Yeah, that's probably the case, however, it points at an approach towards
repairs that suggests some serious half-assedness, which means there's more
stuff like it to discover as you dig deeper into the car.

As for the M103 in the W126 chassis, I'm looking for some actual numbers from
someone that's owned one. If you're saying it only gets in the mid teens, I
would want to know this is from direct experience

A newer, more efficient vergasser engine might get a little better mpg,
but same vintage technology will get the same mileage when driven the
same way.

I like the M103, but if I had to have a vergasser 126, it would be a 420
or 560. (in USA form) A euro M110 would probably be ok too.

I can tell you it will get about the same mileage as a 420 but with a
lot less power.

Yea rebuilt title would make a little bit of difference but not a whole lot on
a car that old. Send me the link to it again. I'm sitting on the beach drinking
a Miami Vice at the moment too lazy to look it up. This is a company trip so
I'm working.

Re: [MBZ] 91 300SEL

2017-02-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Car was a beater, sort of.

The body wasn't bad and as stated previously all the known issues were
addressed, such as evapectomy, delivery valve O rings and washers, wiring
harness, etc.

What put me off were the "repairs" that had been done to the car. Lots of short
cuts, stuff eliminated and bypassed, etc. it would have been a major
undertaking to get everything right again, and that's if the components
involved, like the PB unit, were still functional.

For example, the AC had a wire run directly to the compressor clutch. That is,
it ran 100% of the time, which explained why the expansion valve appeared to be
frozen. And this was on a 66F day. Lights and signals worked, but no hazards.
Things like the fuel heater and windshield washer heater all bypassed. Messy.

Interior was actually pretty nice, with the wood being cracked and a little bit
of headliner droop starting to show. The upholstery, which was a really dark
tan like tobacco (color code 174, whatever that is) was in really good shape.

I might have considered it at $1000, knowing it would take another grand to
make it safe and fully functional, but there's no way I would pay his $1900
asking price.

I'll see if he comes back to me on it as I expect he will. He won't like my
response and will probably blow me off. However, if I could get it for $1000 I
would do it.

I was amazed at the performance of the car despite not being turbocharged.
That's still a pretty spritely ride considering it's normally aspirated. It
drove well and was almost as good as a gas W124, I thought.
