So did you pull the head to see what the problem was and if it can be fixed?
The 3.5 has more torque at lower rpm and would be best to keep it in the car.
As a last resort I would convert to a 3.0 but that's just me.

I would go 1 step further and say I would not tackle the project unless I had a
3.5 available or thought one might turn up in the near future. But then again
that's just me.

I should send a picture, but I don't have one, so here's a thousand words.
The SDL is hanging from jack stands, and the engine lift is poised to pull
out the 350 (figure I should pull that first so I know what I'm getting
into). Some things are disconnected. Hopefully I will have some time this
weekend to yank-and-drop, it is definitely the nice season for outside
work. :)

That seems to match what I thought I knew ten years ago.

Current wisdom seems to be that:

1. 60x head gaskets fail around cylinder #1.
2. 3.5 head gaskets fail sooner because there's less metal around the cylinder
bores, and when they fail water gets in #1 hole and bends the rod.

That seems to match Wilton's car that went from perfectly running, to using
water, to locked up (likely hydrolocked) in short order.

M-B V-8 blocks make interesting coffee tables if you take the oil pan off
and put a sheet of glass or acrylic on top. A six might be too top-heavy,

Me too! :) I hope I can keep it in as good shape as Wilton has for all
these years, it is a beautiful car to behold. And it was a pleasure to
meet Wilton after all these years, as well.

On a more sober note, Wilton's oil analysis came back positive for coolant.
Since it won't turn over now, is there any point in doing further
diagnostics to his engine? Or should I just drop it into the old chassis
and let it add weight for the junkyard?

Thanks,

The head alone is worth more than scrap. I would at least do some

Save it if you have storage. It would be ideal to get a factory replacement
engine, and have that one as a core. Or have it reconditioned at an authorized
Mercedes rebuilder. Not cost effective though.

Probably needs a head gasket.
If you want to fix it, pull the head and see if #1 piston rises as far as the

Are LHD cars exotic there like RHD cars here?
How often do you really need to see around somebody to pass them?
Can you get a 24 valve OM606 turbo easily?
You could be the only kid on the block with a LHD 24 valve 300SDL!

Problem with that is that you get all the weirdos come crawling out from
under their rocks, however a throw away email address to screen the
nutjobs should do the trick.
Perhaps milt-the-w...@hotmail.com or sexgod...@gmail.com or to scare the
tire kickers away colonelcr...@nukeyou.now

I haven't been paying attention to the details, as I am not in the
market for a 126 with a steering wheel on the wrong side but if the body
is rust free, it should be fixed. How much is a 3 litre (not sure what
that is in cubes) MB turbo Diesel from a wreck?

Didn't someone there have a 300SD with crappy body but good mechanicals?
Generally speaking, Colonel, it's the body where the big dollars go and
if you let it be known to the wider community that you have good body
but a sick heart, you should get some interest.
I think you would prefer to see the car live again than see it get
recycled into a chevy and if all it really needs is an engine, what's
the big deal? OK you might be a little past pulling engines but surely
someone would be be willing to do it, say you sold the car for 800 and
an engine is 500, that's a pretty cheap late model SD, BTW where are the
pictures, post some pictures and you might get some excitement.
Worst comes to worst you can park it outside the local Merc dealer with
LEMON written in big yellow letters on it.
OOOh does it have a sunroof, people love sunroofs, everyone loves
sunroofs except for retired air force personnel who prefer their
'earthfloors'

Hendrik
who would like 300SD but they never sold them here

Before you assume the engine is hydrolocked, try to rotate it by
something on the front of the engine (crank bolt, PS pump pulley, etc).

A solid clunk with no rotation is one of the typical symptoms of a
dead starter, I've replace two of them on a 603 that did that.

Re: [MBZ] 91 350SDL

2013-08-24 Thread WILTON
I agree, it is, indeed, a shame. There's really more to it than one sees at
a glance or that one can express or read on an internet forum. I've nursed
this car for 17 years since the timing chain broke and I learned about its
"rod-bender" rep. 'Lost confidence in it less than a year after I bought it
(for BIG money) 18+ years ago and haven't felt really comfortable with it
since the TC break, etc. I've now spent most of this summer (since early
May) fussing over this car (the additional crap from Trent certainly didn't
help any, either). Yes, the coolant leak problem may be fairly simple and
relatively easy to overcome, but I think there's much more. There are some
other major things that I need to deal with, too, such as repairs to the
house we live in plus some significant repairs and updating to a rental
house we own (tenant who was in the house for 33 years moved 'bout 3 weeks
ago).

BTW, SWMBO (surprisingly) has been thus far very "accommodating" about the
dead/useless car sitting in the yard - 'hasn't bugged me about it at all.

BTW, I'll "throw in" with ya on the lottery ticket, but I'm finished with
the car after I get some stuff off it that still has value to me - can use
the cruise control amp, for example, right now on the 124.
Oh, just remembered - it has nearly $75 worth of fuel in it. That, too,
will work very nicely in the 124. ;<)

Well it seems a shame to crush or part-out a nice car with a fairly small
problem (realizing it could be more than that) that requires a bit of time
and effort to sort (neither of which either of us have in abundance, one
or the other or both) so that is my dilemma. It could be a fun project.

I have one fully functional Benz at the moment. That would be the w220. The
W124 came back from the body shop without fender and bumper/headlamp -- it may
have a purchaser. The w140 is going to the shop on monday for a transmission,
but it has a battery that can not muster a full 12v. The R107 is going to a
mechanic to get the noisy exhaust leak dealt with at some point next week.

I do not think a non functional W126 would endear me to SWMBA.

Re: [MBZ] 91 350SDL

2013-08-23 Thread WILTON
My thoughts, too, but the engine obviously tries to turn - this does not
seem to be a starter clunk - sounds like an inside the engine clunk, and I
can see the fan try to turn a bit. Starter is obviously not DEAD - seems
lively and ready to go; can hear it release and try to "spin down" a very
slight bit when key is released from START. I did have a thought that the
starter could be locking up on a broken gear, etc. - something. Hydolock or
not, I've finished with the car, but, because my basic nature is to not give
up easily, the wrench on the PS pulley has been bugging me all day and I'll
try that tomorrow. I can not stand and walk safely without aid! It is NOT
easy at all for me to keep messing with it. For example, those damned
batteries are HEAVY, and I'm not gonna switch 'em again. I've been nursing
this car for 18 years.

Before you assume the engine is hydrolocked, try to rotate it by
something on the front of the engine (crank bolt, PS pump pulley, etc).

A solid clunk with no rotation is one of the typical symptoms of a dead
starter, I've replace two of them on a 603 that did that.

Oh, 'forgot to mention: engine is now locked up - possibly hydolock. Known
good, fully-charged, nearly-new ('bout 2 months old) battery from '87 300D

it's rotation is prevented by something solid.

BTW, again, 'noticed an engine on ebay that I think could be a nice engine

BTW, does MB mention anything about re-torquing the head bolts on those
engines? They may call for re-torquing after a rebuild i.e. a valve
job etc. , and putting 100 miles or so on them, but for a original
engine i haven't seen anything suggesting such.

Just wondering why head gaskets lets go after many miles of

Actually on second thought Google says its not quite 12 hours from Lynn to
Goldsboro, we'd probably be just as well off to rent the truck here and
drive both ways. Boston Avis has better options than Raleigh anyway. ;)

Flight is around a hundred bucks. It was around a hundred bucks for me to rent
the pickup the other day but I worked it hard. Avis says it'll be more like

That's a great question. :) 330k? on the chassis, but the car went through
two owners before I got it so I didn't get much history. Could be
anywhere

from 20K (my mileage) to 330K I suppose. Obviously the head isn't
original, but the PO didn't know when it had been replaced, nor by whom.
He had bought it after a wreck, so I don't think he drove it very far
himself.

I do have the autocheck somewhere, but it didn't have any maintenance
history. I wonder, would repair places update historical records? Maybe
it would be worthwhile getting a newer one.

Bring a bigger trailer and you can get my '87 300SDL with a #22 head, too.
Could do an engine swap, or at least a head swap. Body is scrap-worthy,
transmission works fine but not new. I'll ask $800 OBRO, as-is where-is
in
Chapel Hill NC 27516. (Just off I-40; you can pull the engine, and drop

Just took it on about an 8-mile drive; 'best I can tell, lost no coolant.
We'll see what oil analysis says. USPS says kit'll be here today - we'll
see.

It doesn't seem to be losing coolant now; I'll put some more oil in it and
try it a bit again tomorrow.

Idles and runs nicely; 'fraid to drive it so much with fuel in the oil.

PLACE YOUR BIDS; BRING A TRAILER

I lost a lot of confidence in the car the day the timing chain broke at
89 kmi in April 1996. 'Few days later, learned about many other owners'
problems with same engine -- rod-bender, etc. Many of you have noticed
that I've many times said, "Car doing well - just keeping my fingers
crossed." The car is a fantastic cruiser - best riding/driving car I've
had during 60 years of car ownership. I was terribly disappointed the
day it "dropped" me on the road catastrophically - only car that's ever
done that. I just can not feel "at ease" travelling long distances in
it. After getting the transmission rebuilt several years ago at 186 kmi
and repairing the vandalism to it in March 2012, I decided that I would
let it go at the next major failure/expense. I'm afraid this is it.
Meanwhile, it has spent most of the last 4 or 5 years just sitting
collecting bird doo that I have to wash off coupla times a week; we drive
it only occasionally, mainly, to keep the battery from going completely
dead; we've driven it only about 7 kmi in last couple of years or more.
I'm not physically able to keep it clean and waxed like I want to and the
way it should be. We're gonna see how it goes with just one car for a
while.

Ditto -- find a quality oil and forget the snake oils - be patient - I
have heard about gunk buildupin Quaker State Oils but that's just
anecdotal..

I have started using Amsoil and have been happy with it... speaking of
which, it's time for an analysis... ;-)

I do NOT have experience with engines that are started, driven a block

I would NOT be dumping any kind of snake oil (or brake cleaner) in the

for this purpose with old 'merkun iron, but I would NOT use either in
a modern MB with the current tight tolerances. YMMV

Not off topic at all! If I understand your description of the gunk
around the filler cap it sounds like it may be condensation which is
normally forced to evaporate when the engine is driven long enough to
get fully warmed up and stay warmed up for several miles. If the
sludge is kind of grayish and the consistency of jello it may be
condensation. If not, never mind. ;-) But in any case, sludge
should not be forming on a engine receiving regular oil changes.
Perhaps the PO failed to change the oil at regular intervals? I'm
not familiar with the sensors MB uses to tell owners when to change
their oil but if it goes more than 9000 miles or so I'd get antsy and
change it anyway. We've done a number of TBN tests of various oils
and the Total Base Number starts to be depleted after around 9000
miles. I know, some people go more miles than that without apparent
problems but that's what the lab numbers say. Of course, different
oils, weights, sub brands, and other factors contribute to different
TBNs and their depletion rate.Total Base Number is a measure of
the oils ability to neutralize the acids that are created by the
combustion process.

So it's a difference between black gooey stuff and a creamy
grayish stuff. If it's black and gooey IMO oil changes have been
neglected. If it's grayish and creamy, it's not being fully warmed
up.

Condensation is a common problem for people who start their car,
drive a couple of miles to work/school or whatever and shut it down.

I don't know what your driving habits are (or more likely the
PO's) but if an engine is going to be started, it needs to be driven
until it is warm, then maintain that heat for a while - this will
force evaporate any moisture that condenses overnight. If the
thermostat is not working properly the engine can fail to reach
operating temp - my 91 300D was like this when we bought it and it
never got above 160F - but this was winter in Va.

Coolant level at full mark in overflow tank before drive and this morning.
