It now turns - car was facing the sun all morning. Is there any way
to PREVENT this from happening again, short of building another
garage?

Is the flap still over they keyhole? If so, there's also
a thin plastic drip shield that's supposed to be over the
lock assembly on the inside of the door, so that it doesn't
get rained on by the window. That doesn't last long, and
is one of the first things lost when the door is worked
on. (The other being the vapor barrier.)

PAH! Southerners know nothing... Take a propane torch and just touch the lock
with it for a second (while its lit obviously) it'll melt the ice out easy
peasy.

No propane torch? Go get a wind proof butane lighter, same deal, hold it on
longer.

I may need to call Roadside to unfreeze the door locks in my1985
300TD.  I tried copious amounts of de-icer solution but it didn'tt
work.  I can finally insert the key into the driver's door lock, but
it won't turn.  What puzzles me is that it isn't even that cold in
D.C. but it rained a ton yesterday, then dipped below freezing last
night.

What else can I do without wrecking my brand new door handle?

You can heat the key then put it in and try again. After enough
repetitions it will go. Even is you just put it in your pocket to
warm for a minute. I have never spent more than 5 min doing that and
breathing on the doorlock while the key is warming in my pocket.

If you're at home, and by an outlet, maybe hit it with a hairdryer for a few
minutes? Not too hot, keep it moving, you don't want to damage the paint or
anything. I've had that too, where a mild day allows water to get inside,
then freezes.

If I know it's going to be really cold, I try to park so that the drivers
door is facing the sun the next morning. Even if cold, that bit of sun can
sometimes make a difference I find.

I received the same letter, but my copy indicated that if I had spent
$100.00 within the last 18 months or continue to receive service at an
authorized dealer, I would continue to get free roadside assistance. I don't
see this as a major problem. I could take my car in for an alignment once a
year and maintain the free roadside assistance. It does not seem to be an
unreasonable requirement from MBNA. Sometimes, I think we all get spoiled

You don't think the premium you will pay for your dealer alignment isn't in
part going towards covering your "free" roadside assist? Nothing in life is
free. MB is a for profit business (which I'm all for), so if they're giving
you something, you're paying for it one way or another.

Hey, I'm not knocking Benz dealers, or the good ones. I buy most of my
parts from them, and have offered to let them find and sell me cars on two
occasions (OK, they fell through on both occasions). But I'm fully aware
that part of the price of those oil filters and other bits I buy, just like
your alignment, is helping to pay for the "free" stuff. ;-)

Apparently if you've been an MBCA member for at least twelve months prior to
the initiation of this new policy which begins in January 2011 then you are
still covered by roadside assistance. You have to currently be a member in

Evidently the stealerships in your neck of the woods are better than
the ones around here. 30 years ago, even 20 years ago, there were
many good long time dealerships with knowledgeable staff around here.
Then the MadAve geniuses got ahold of MBNA, changed it to MBUSA,
kicked out all the good dealers and set up stealers under new
ownership with kids that are parts changers. (Not to mention making
cheapo plastic cars) There is not a stealer within 250 miles I would
even let change the oil in one of my cars. Even if I had a brand
new $100k S.

Last time I had a dealer work on my car was a long-long time ago.

I doubt if there are too many people with older cars that take advantage
of this service -- what, like maybe every few years if a battery dies or
a tire goes flat, if they even remember to call MB.

Some bean counter probably figures they can save a $mil or so a year by
pissing off the few MB customers and drivers who use the service without
the service. Smart move.

I agree. Its not the services received are "free" its that they are
earned. The purchase of a Benz provides the *expectation* that road side
service be included, just like providing for the all of our freedoms through
military service provides medical care as compensation for said service.
Thank you for your service, Wilton.

As a Side note - I hate it when these agreements change after purchase. I
am a rather young working guy, but my father is a retired civil servant. He
received fair compensation for his 30 years of dedicated service, but those
years of service came with the promise of health care for himself and my
mother, dental care, and some other benefits. Now that poor financial
decisions have been made by our state, the rules are changing. This is
fundementally unfair. Thanks for listening to my rant
