Certain planners get angry at any plan not their own. That's usually the
source of the "A".

Our MBP 9,2 was a very deliberate acquisition, specifically designed to meet
quite
a few criteria that aren't really on SWMBA's radar. Trouble-free, inexpensive
in case it
gets lost/stolen in college, old enough that it's not very likely to get
stolen, compatible
with the Ethernet and USB jacks around campus, particularly in the scion's
room, running
up-to-date (supported, Catalina) software, and with automatic backup, both in
his room
(if he remembers to plug in HAL) and here at home.

The Mac Pro is/has legacy support. One of the drives is partitioned with
obsolete examples of OSX, such that I support the original iPad, iPod touches
and Classic iPods, as well as stuff as current as 2016. Everything is paired
to that computer, which leaves the old and working iTunes able stuff orphan
when I upgrade to Apple silicon.

SWMBA got mad at me for snagging the MBP 9,2. She planned on dumping the MBP
16” fully loaded as the holiday gift. I explained that it was last of the
intel line and I am a rusting, not bleeding edge adopter. Maybe in a few years
she can source the ARM based Mac Pro, if they turn out reliable.

I don't know about XP, but I had iTUNZ on Win7 a couple months ago.
It refused to do any phone backup/restore stuff until I updated the
phones to the latest and greatest, but it didn't demand I put a new OS
on my computer.

It did, however, always launch itself at startup and upload stuff to
Apple without my approval, and, IIRC, when I told Task Manager to nuke
the processes, Apple said "I can't let you do that, Dave, all your hard
drive is belonging to me".

Use a virtual machine (like VirtualBox) guest. Run it only when
you need iTunes. As far as iTunes/apple is concerned, it is the
only software installed on the computer. And it's easy to
"unplug" the ethernet that connects to the web but you can still
use host-only network or guest-shared directory to access files on
the host computer.

Are you comfortable with command-line (Terminal) stuff?

Mac OS is unix under the covers.

Get both machines on your home network. Determine the IP address of the
new machine. Run an ssh server on the new machine.

On the old machine, use scp, sftp, or rsync to copy your data to the new
machine.

Just trying to find the Appstore crap that I purchased is a trial. Yesterday
(not catalina) I could see all the things I ever had. Today, the interface is
opaque and convoluted and shows nothing I have elsewhere. I search while
looking at the applications folder, and find most of it GONE. Like Firefox and
the anti virus/spyware stuff. Productivity, games, lots of things remain alive
on the MB, but will not find fertile ground in the MBP.

Itunes? Now I am locked out, so must find a way to import the old libraries.
And it will not show my store credits. Says I am flat broke. Must be because
I refused to give them banking data for apple pay.

I've got a cool external drive, I think its a Western Digital, that uses a
base that is just the normal SATA connectors. So I can pull the base off and
use it with just a bare drive if needed.

Getting our latest acquisition, a MBP 9,2 for my son's college career, brought
up to date
was nightmarish. We had a failing internal HD cable that was to blame for half
of it, but
once that was addressed Apple's new crop of script kiddies was to blame for the
rest.
It probably would have gone smoothly with rotating media, but a flash drive can
now
ONLY be formatted with the new filesystem, which means things like target disk
mode
(from El Krapitan) won't work. The new OS installers check, and WON'T work to
deliver
an OS via target disk mode, unlike in the prior decades. We were unable to
'restore' this
machine to the state of his prior laptop and then upgrade the OS to Catalina.
(I've done
that sort of thing before, in past years' upgrades.) It took me weeks to get
the machine
into the state I expected to be able to reach in a few hours. It's fine now,
and works well,
but getting there?

Not Impressed.

I feel your pain.
I merely wanted to copy my contacts list from one iPhone (iOS 13) to
another (iOS 12).

Did the put the phones together and let phone 1 set up phone 2.
But that didn't move contacts.
In fact, in the eyes of Apple, there is no excuse to ever want to copy
contacts from one phone to another. If you want to copy anything, you
want to copy the whole thing, across your computer using iTunes. But
first, we need to update both phones to the latest iOS, so that takes an
overnight 4GB download, two nights for two phones.
And since you're copying the whole phone, everything you have saved on
the receiving phone gets obliterated. But you copied your contact list
and it only took two days.

I should have manually typed the contacts in, there were only about 50
of them.

The price you pay for supposedly better privacy than Goolag allows is
devices that won't do a damn thing you want them to do, but instead
force you to do what Apple wants you to do.

+1, every yard needs a shed and if you've already got one shed then you can
just be "Two sheds".
When I go to deer hunting camp in a couple weeks I get to start moving stuff
from Garage 1 to garage 2. We shoulda just built garage 1 twice as big in the
first place but it was already a boondoggle. Originally a 10x12 shed it ended
up being a 16x24 garage. The new garage is also 16x24 and should probably have
been 24x40. At least I got dad to add a 10' wide car port down one side...

I assume the house is insulated at ceiling level. If you closed in a bit
of the attic and insulated between the rafters, it would likely heat
with rising air from below. Put one of those drop down ladders in the
hallway. If you can do the attic room near a gable end, you could
install a window and have some natural light.

Much better than the crawl space. The only story I recall about someone
living in the crawl space was a high school student here in Winnipeg who
crawled out one day and went to school and shot a fellow student. Crawl
spaces are depressing.

Greg Fiorentino recommended Lenovo Thinkpads years ago. I bought several, and
they are great machines. They are ancient, but still do quite well. The T410 I
have is several generations old, but still supports Windows 10 (and Linux) very
well. His last recommendation when I asked a while back was a ThinkPad W530.

I don't know what kind of crap all the W10 users load that blows up the OS,
but it has been rock solid for me, as have been all of the previous
versions except ME. I did manage 10,000 Windows desktops in a previous job
and did occasionally need to re-image some of them. They weren't totally
locked down, so the users could get creative in ways to blow them up.
Rather than try to un-do the damage, we'd squirt a new image on the disk.
All the documents and files that mattered to the enterprise were on
servers, so blowing away the old stuff on the disk was not an issue.

I picked up an i5 17” behemoth for the wife just before Xmas last year courtesy

Re: [MBZ] Mac laptop

2020-10-25 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I'm typing this on a HP G72 that I bought for $400 at Radio Shack nearly
ten years ago.

3 Problems:
About 4 years ago I lost two vertical lines on the display.
When it first happened, moving the lid would fix it, so the problem is
with the flat flex circuit going through the hinge, not the display
panel itself. I figured that was just a random thing.
2 years ago I had to replace the battery. 1 year ago the Chinese
replacement battery was worse than the original battery. Cheap Amazon
battery #2 is holding up fine.
This summer one of the hinges jammed, and cracked the lid at the hinge.
This seems to be something that happens to them all eventually, but it
took over nine years to happen to me, so hard to be mad.

Next computer will probably be a $600 17" HP from Costco. Hoping to
either get the current ones for $500 or one with an 11th gen processor
for $600 by year end. These days a cheap $600 lappy comes with 12GB ram
and 1 TB hard drive, and the Costco HPs still have a DVD writer.

HP Z2. Less cost, better support from the manufacturer.
Everything Apple has made since the Retina MacBook is crap. I've got a touchbar
mac, its the first laptop I've had that is of lesser quality than the one that
preceded it. Its slower and has the worst keyboard I've ever used barring the
Atari 400 membrane.I've got a trashcan Mac Pro that I got for a song. If I'd
had to pay list for it I'd never have had one but its a good, competent machine
for home use that merely cost 2x what it was worth.

Currently I depend upon a 2009 macbook that is getting long in the tooth.
Hardware in SEA, yet to arrive here is the MP 3,1 loaded out with 4-2GB drives,
32GB ram, dual Xeon 3.2.  This is the homebase unit with all data
(photo/video/audio) and pairing of devices.  There is a time machine hdd as
well as some external drives (firewire).  Other unit is a mid 2010 mac mini
fully outfitted and time machine unit as well, that hooked to the old 52” TV.

Should I really be looking at the current crop of hardware, be it Mac Pro or
MBP 16?  Cost and lack of optical drive/upgrade path deter going for either.
Retina models were a quality quagmire, which leaves the mid 2012 MBP.  Not sure
the soda can MP solves anything.

Chime in please

Depends.

If you’re looking for a laptop and the related lack of weight and ease of use,
I would recommend a 13” i5 or greater MacBook Air from maybe 2013-14. Beware
MacBook Pros from 2014-2018, as they had well known issues with displays and
keyboards.

I have a 2013 13” MBA and while I rarely use it, when I do I like it. Look on
Apple’s refurb site for some later model stuff at good prices. Not sure they
would go back that far. Looks like a later (2017) MBA fairly well dressed out
is about $1000:

If you’re set on a particular model you can use a refurb tracker site like this
one to alert you what’s on the site, as things come and go pretty quickly:
