Out on the desert here, if you lay down for a nap you will wake up with
vultures circling overhead. waiting just in case ;))

I've never seen them go for anything that's not dead. Rattlesnakes are
always hung on a fence to "ripen" and even coyotes won't touch them for 3
days... professional courtesy, I suppose..

Year ‘round.

I’ve never seen them go after anything injured. That’s not to say they won’t
follow something they think is on its last legs, but they won’t attack it that
I’ve ever seen.

Food sources are too plentiful here, I suspect. I see them all year long.
Sort of like the darned geese that used to winter in Wisconsin because some
idiot took to feeding them.

We toss squirrel carcasses on the brush pile that we build and burn at

Similar to the story of my friend, Greg,  from years back, which I may
have related previously. He and his brother,. Bruce, went hunting in the
interlake region north of Winnipeg. In order to ensure an early start,
they drove up the night before and slept in the bucket seats of the
truck beside a hydro access road. Come morning, Bruce quickly announced
that Greg could build a fire and work on breakfast while he scouted
around a bit. Greg was not all that amused, but since Bruce took off, he
built a fire and got some coffee brewing. A few minutes later, a moose
walked onto the road about 50 yards away. Greg got his gun and dropped
the moose. Bruce came back a bit later and commented that he had heard a
gun shot and asked if that was Greg shooting. Greg pointed behind the
truck to the moose lying on the road. They were able to back the truck
right up to it and load the quarters on to the truck. Much better than
carrying it out of the bush.
The rest of the story is that they took it to Greg's house and hung it
in the basement. His wife was off a the ballet with Bruce's wife. When
she got home, she walked in and asked "what is that smell?". Greg took
her to the basement to show off his prize. It got moved to a cold
storage facility that afternoon. I do not blame her. I had called him
that day and asked to borrow a big electric drill that I knew he had. He
was agreeable and when I went to pick it up, he showed me the moose. It
did have quite an odor.

Is that year 'round? Or are there more of them in the winter?
I'm asking because most of the turkey vultures around here depart
for the winter. A sure sign of spring is their return.

And speaking of raptors, a couple days ago I saw an american
kestrel kiting near the road, and a few minutes later a bald eagle
flew over.

have to be fully dead?

As in Tejas, we have large groups of turkey vultures, which perform an amazing
community service by clearing roads and pretty much and open areas of dead
animals. They’re amazingly efficient, typically clearing a carcass in a matter
of hours. I can see a dead possum or armadillo freshly deceased on the road
when I go out in the morning and there will be no trace of it when I come home
in the afternoon.

In the north our road and highway crews were often tasked with clearing such
stuff as a part of their jobs. Not necessary here.

I might have related the story of the father and daughter in Texas who
had gone out to hunt boars and after some time came back empty handed.
They were loading up the truck and one comes strolling across the dirt
road right in front of the truck, the little girl who I remember being
maybe 10 or 12 grabs her rifle and shoots the thing right there like
30ft away.  They took a picture of it, the thing was absolutely
monstrous, not one of these little porkers you see running around but a

proud.

I guess I'm picky.

The copy says "...M16 in your hands." and a bit later "Reload the
machine gun and engage."

*sigh*

Even at full auto an M16 is not a machine gun...

Of course, it makes me suspicious of the accuracy of everything
else on the site.

Tracking and stalking is - well, tracking and stalking. Hunting
is "go looking for prey". I see no requirement for tracking, or
stalking, or hiding in a blind, or being "sporting" in "hunting".

From what I've read on the subject, domestic hogs go feral more quickly
than any domestic animal. The folks that study such things wrote it only
takes 2 generations for a "full wild hog conversion" to happen.

A wild boar with full tusk is a force to contend with, head on.

Around here in West Central Florida a wild hog can rip a dog or a person to
pieces with its sharp tusks. The trained "boar dogs" will grab a hog by it's
ears so it can't gore them with its tusks, and another will grab its throat or
hold it while the hunter shoots it.
Wild hogs are not like domestic pigs. They are built more like dogs and can run
like dogs; very dangerous. Your only escape from a wild hog that's chasing you
is to go up a tree or the bed of a pickup truck if you're not armed.
Since boar meat around here can taste "gamey", most of it is ground into
sausage. It's some of the best sausage I've ever eaten.

That’s possible as we do have a lot of wasps, but having kept bees I can assure
you that most of the pollinators visiting the tree are honeybees.

The trapper we use to clear our park of wild boars of which I referred to
previously sells most of his catch to the Latino community in the area. He
says they pay very, very well for a whole live boar and there’s always a demand.

I am sort of interested in the impact on all the out of town snakes that got
let loose in the state. Will this cold snap just slow them down, or will it be
able to knock out a pretty healthy proportion of them?

Iguana is tasty. Get it into the freezer until you have a goodly amount, then

We have a local trapper that comes in with his dogs and traps them for free.
He’s given me lots of pork in return. Yum.

He has a couple of dogs that he uses to trap the boars, it’s really pretty
cool. One is a hound (bay) that finds them, the other a (catch) mastiff sort
of dog (I don’t know what he breed is) that catches the boars by the throat and
holds them until he can get there, snare them and put them in a cage. Both of
the dogs wear these big heavy leather collars with spikes on them.

Sounds like a great experience and a great meal. The key to anything
that might be tough is low and slow.

At noon I just had some more of my Man Candy(TM) Home cured corn beef
brisket, so tender it melts in you mouth m (cooked low
and slow)

My cousins and uncle in Hawaii hunted wild boar regularly. I never got
in on any hunt nor the meals. Uncle had an o3A3 (30-06) he used to get
em. Some of the Hawaiian crazies tried to get in close and cut the
jugular with a knife. A lot of dogs got killed by the pigs.

Lizards falling off trees reminds me of the Shmoo (plural Shmoon) invented
by cartoonist Al Capp.

Shmoos ".. reproduce asexually and are incredibly prolific, multiplying
exponentially faster than rabbits. They require no sustenance other than
air.
- Shmoos are delicious to eat, and are eager to be eaten. If a human looks
at one hungrily, it will happily immolate itself — either by jumping into a
frying pan, after which they taste like chicken, or into a broiling pan,
after which they taste like steak. When roasted they taste like pork, and
when baked they taste like catfish. (Raw, they taste like oysters
 on the half-shell.)"

but I don’t think there are many caught on an annual basis.

Again, iguanas are not common this far north, as it’s not a tropical subclimate

That’s what we refer to them as. I’ve never tried to pick one or eat them. I
look at it as a contribution to keeping the local flora and fauna alive.
Especially the bees, as I used to keep bees when I lived in Indiana. And I
understand that picking the fruit won’t affect the bees….

today, but it’s bright and sunny (thank goodness!)

Iguanas are more of a south Florida thing. We do have lizards in our trees and
bushes, however, but I haven’t seen any fall out. Kitty will alert me if that
happens, as she likes to patrol the front windows to watch the ornamental fig
tree this time of year. It’s a (literal) beehive of activity with bees, birds
and chicken of the trees in it as it goes from flowering to producing fruit.
