What bugs me about bitlocker is M$ won't activate it unless you sign up
for a M$ account and let them keep your encryption key for you. The
closest I want to having my key out of my control is putting it in my
safe deposit box.

Of course, that comes in handy sometimes, like when my bosses laptop
took a dump on her last winter and she had done some payroll work on it
that was not backed up anywhere. Took it to a shop and they pulled the
HD, found it encrypted, and asked her for her bitlocker key. My what?
I told her to log into her M$ account and get the key. Why didn't the
computer shop tell me I could get it that way? Good question.

Signal was/is considered a major threat to intelligence collection in the NSA
and CIA. There are direct references to this in a number of the slide decks
that Snowden exposed, and the FBI in particular has continued to clutch it’s
pearls to Congress and the DOJ over it’s use by private citizens. It’s open
source and not funded by any government agency. Working in the industry I can
assure you that if I wanted 100% end to end encrypted messaging I would be
using it.

And that’s all I’m going to say about it.

If you don't have a web provider, you have to have your own hosting servers and
internet connections. Not cheap, and you have to have people to run them. For
a service that operates world wide with hundreds of millions of users
potentially, we aren't talking a couple desktops in a corner.

Actually, they had a developer’s API that was coded by a 10 year old that
allowed some European hackers to access the stored data even after their rights
got pulled. They were able to download a significant amount of message traffic
with user names and other identifying data. Interestingly, Parler did not scrub
metadata on pictures or other such things, so EXIF and other goodies
identifying the devices and their locations were ripe for the picking, so to
speak.

I don't use either one (I'm not on social media at all, actually) but
the pitch for Signal is secure end-to-end encryption. I thought it was
mostly a competitor to SMS or iMessage or other direct message
apps. Maybe it has a "follow" feature like Twitter? Don't know.

Parler appears to have some issues on the technical side, from what I've
read. Some clues that their programmers were not very experienced or
well-educated in secure programming practices (things like using a
simple sequential number for message IDs, which makes them easy to
guess). Their main selling point is/was free speech, not so much secrecy
or privacy. They didn't seem very prepared for being suddenly banned
from Amazon services, which is maybe understandable but when you use
cloud providers you should always have a tested plan "B" in case you
need it. Services like Google and Amazon are known to ban accounts for
no discernable reason, and talking to a real person to get it sorted out
is near-impossible.

Re: [MBZ] OT Anyone know/use Signal?

2021-01-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Signal was/is considered a major threat to intelligence collection in the NSA
and CIA. There are direct references to this in a number of the slide decks
that Snowden exposed, and the FBI in particular has continued to clutch it’s
pearls to Congress and the DOJ over it’s use by private citizens. It’s open
source and not funded by any government agency. Working in the industry I can
assure you that if I wanted 100% end to end encrypted messaging I would be
using it.

And that’s all I’m going to say about it.

interesting.  I am trying to overthrow Johns Island but I don't know who
to throw over yet.  I probably need to buy a boat first though.  Maybe I
should get to know this guy

The Navy’s USS High Point was abandoned. A Charleston man hopes to
 bring it back to life.

But we might need a bigger boat

Signal is what the military is requiring all active duty people to use, if
that is any indication.

This article from Forbes details the metadata collected by Messenger,
WhatsApp and Signal.

Signal was developed by a CIA contractor so big brother can keep tabs on
you while you think you've got an encrypted communication channel. I guess
that may be better than google / apple / fakebook / borg having control
