No I didn't mean to imply anything negative. I'd just never seen/heard
of one. Thanks for the info.

Why not a 2 stroke generator? Remember its 1200w...

Chinese copy of a Honda. The Honda is ~$600, mine was ~$120
TG brand like this:
http://www.amazon.com/TG1200-2-Cycle-Powered-Portable-Generator/dp/B000P9UOAC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314664875&sr=8-1

That one says its 1000w continuous 1200 peak. I could have sworn mine was 1200w
continuous 1400w peak but I could be wrong.

Oh and I almost forgot its got 12v out to alligator clips, super handy for
recharging/jumping disabled equipment in inconvenient places. Have already used
it once on the car in the cold.

Dad bought one like it (I forget the brand, his was yellow) ran it twice and
the pull starter broke. Fortunately the store he got it from had a good return
policy. His was the 800/1000w version (which makes me think mine is the
1000/1200w) when he took it back he got a 3000w unit that we use at camp where
the 800w was too small.

I bought a 1200w unit in '08 after the big ice storm. I've run it 3-4 times
since then, never needed it as such. I bought it to run my sump pump since
thats what we were short on when we had the ice storm.

That reminds me, this weekend I should drain the gas, put in a little fresh and
fire it up. I like that its 2 stroke, less to maintain.

My area used to get a power failure of 3-15 days every couple of years in the
1970s and early 1980s. There hasn't been a 24 hour outage in at least ten years.
The worst my parents got since they bought the standby genny four years ago was
when their transformer took a lightning hit around 10-11pm. I think it was about
12 hours before the new transformer was installed.

Depends on how warm it is and how good your freezer is. If you have an external
ice maker opening your freezer will thaw MUCH faster. When we had the big ice
storm our freezer was fine 2 days later, wife's grandparent's freezer had
significant thawing.

I hate when people get upset about how long the power will be out. You knew
this was coming, if you couldn't prepare thats your fault. There are MILLIONS
of people without power why should you be at the front of the line?

Barely long enough for you to drive a couple hours west to purchase a
generator or kW inverter.

Seriously, expect to toss all freezer contents and anything with meat from
the fridge after a day. Also anything that might have come in contact with
meat juice in said refrigerator. Of course it will vary somewhat with a
more efficient refrigerator, but not as much as you'd hope.

If you have other insurance action you could probably add the food to the
claim.

I bought a generator last season only for the occasional local power
outages. We have lost a lot of food over the years.

Best,

Ok, now the power is out, and they're talking about days, not hours.

Yeah, gonna be a good one in DC, I think. My sister lives just off
the GW Parkway a few miles north of Mt. Vernon -- no danger of
flooding, I don't think, but plenty of rain. My BIL has a boat at my
Aunt's place in West River, 'round the corner from Annapolis, that's
more of a worry. Never been flooded there, either, and it's pretty
sheltered from the Bay, but it's going to be a LONG storm, I think.

It's as big a Katrina on satellite

Oh man, good luck down there.
I just boarded up the huge opening in our attic for the whole house
fan

and
taped up the large windows we have just in case. Gutters are clean,
fridge
and freezer are packed with everything we can find that will stay
cold.

We're under a Hurricane warning now, so they're expecting it to pass
pretty
close. The water is one thing, but I'm worried about all the mature
trees

here in our densely populated town.

But Obama told you to pay attention, evacuate, get ready, etc. and he
even did that himself (and I think his lovely bride took her own plane

Not surprising, just learned that many trees are down around around town;
10k or so people in town without power; roof caved in at local mall, etc. #
2 son lost power 0600 today; they are at his in-law's coupla blocks away.
SWMBO and I still feel lucky; 'still have power, a roof, TV, phone, internet
(though cable is under big tree in front yard), no damages to the house.
Beginning to calm down significantly; may get another rain "band," though.

Re: [MBZ] OT _ Irene

2011-08-27 Thread Peter Frederick
Yeah, gonna be a good one in DC, I think. My sister lives just off
the GW Parkway a few miles north of Mt. Vernon -- no danger of
flooding, I don't think, but plenty of rain. My BIL has a boat at my
Aunt's place in West River, 'round the corner from Annapolis, that's
more of a worry. Never been flooded there, either, and it's pretty
sheltered from the Bay, but it's going to be a LONG storm, I think.

It's as big a Katrina on satellite

I wish you well. Downed trees are usually our worst problem with these
storms here. They knock out power, crush houses, cars, etc. Coastal and
low areas have the flooding problem, of course. No fun to have a roof blow

Oh man, good luck down there.

I just boarded up the huge opening in our attic for the whole house fan
and
taped up the large windows we have just in case. Gutters are clean,
fridge

and freezer are packed with everything we can find that will stay cold.

We're under a Hurricane warning now, so they're expecting it to pass
pretty

close. The water is one thing, but I'm worried about all the mature trees
here in our densely populated town.

We got a bit of rain in the morning, then no more. Winds were up a bit

but just breezy, and it cooled off nicely. Very high new moon high tide
last night, and the surf and surge were up to the dunes at the beach
