Can you sell a V10, tranny and computers for anything?

Perhaps not so much. See above. Otherwise, it's running great. I'm
fairly impressed with the thing's torque.
I saw one set on a pallet on the 'Bay, for about $1000, but I've no idea if
it sold, or not. Mine is _known_ to
have problems, but I'm told it's not too hard to slap bearings in there, if
the engine is already out. Looks like
a bearing kit is about $170.

If it was a _Viper_ V10, well...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Trucks

2018-05-20 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Still waiting on a buy-back valuation, but in other news the transmission
seems to be fixed.
Spontaneously Friday, on two of the four legs that day, the transmission
worked perfectly.
(Bad, Good, Good, Bad.) Well, that just _screams_ electrical to me, so
Saturday I went
through all the external electrics, pulling relays, etc. I cleaned the
contacts _inside_ the
associated relay, and cleaned the external blades. I used De-Ox-It on all
contacts, internal
and external. (I had already done the engine/transmission computer's
connectors.) I then
re-pulled the tranny connector and used brake cleaner on it again, making
sure to get a
bunch puddled into the upward-facing socket. I then used compressed air to
blow it out.
Not sure whether it was on top, or inside the socket, but I could fee/hear
small chunks blow
around there. I did that twice, then used De-Ox-It on the connector, and
plugged it back in.
I think it seated further than before, with a positive 'snick', which I
don't remember from before.

Subsequent to that, all trips have been with a perfectly functioning
transmission. Engine
RPM's are now low on the freeway, about 1,500 RPM at 55-ish. You can feel
all four shifts,
counting the one where the torque converter lockup engages. Nice. Maybe
the next tank
will turn in better than the first one, which was 10.8 MPG. Hey, at least
it made it into double
digits, which I wasn't really expecting. V10's are thirsty beasts.

The bearing noise, though, is _not_ a good sign, and is enough to help keep
me from feeling
too guilty at the prospect of slaughtering this truck for parts to get mine
going again.
What I really needed was a rollover, one that did not damage the
mechanicals, but I doubt
that one of those would have been any cheaper than the $1,450 that this one
cost me.
($2,140 ready to drive.)

The truck saga proceeds glacially. USAA has finally responded formally
with a resolution of total loss,
and a settlement offer of $20,040. (Remember that I bought the truck in
1998 for $26,500 or so.)
Seems pretty fair to me.

They, however, have not yet said what the salvage buy-back value is. I
have found a shop that
does only frame swaps and other frame work, the place that the expensive
body shop uses,
and he estimated $3k-$3.5k to do the swap, perhaps more with incidentals.
 (Gear ratio
change in the front, etc.)

I am currently driving the V10 parts donor truck, with its rattly bearings
and a slushbox stuck
in limp-home mode. Hey, it works, even the AC, and was only $2100 in its
current condition,
1/10 the value of the other.

The parts truck was a peer to mine, and probably cost nearly the same
originally. One had
aged better than the other, that's for sure! (OK, I did have mine
repainted.)

Apparently a 2-3 only mode is pretty common in these, and often an easy fix.
But, this is a PARTS truck, and that part I don't need!

Lots of room under the hood, even with a V10 in it. Runs rougher than
you'd think,
but this V10 is not symmetrical, unlike Ford's. Much simpler and more
robust
as a result. It's a pushrod engine, so it ought to be fairly durable over
time.
(Simple timing chain, like on an I6, but much shorter.)

I fiddled with the lights to get them all working, so as to avoid the
bulls.I made a new
interior door pull out of a section of alternator belt from a Mercedes, and
got the spare
tire hung back in place. This truck is THRASHED compared to how mine was,
which
was like new, inside and out.

Then I filled the bed with bicycles and recycling. Got a truck again,
might as well use it...

weak tranny.  Still, don't need it to be much, except intact where it
counts and able to haul itself to surgery, while hauling some things around
for us until then.  About $2150 down the road, with some used tires that
are actually round.

I suspect that the tranny's problem is that it starts in 2, and only goes

Ask and you shall receive. The first thing that popped up when I opened

Its not a 392, but a 345. But, it is still a IH truck! Needs a little
restoration, but it could be cool!

Err - that's not old... Electronic fuel injection. Probably has
the 4L80 transmission.

Maybe less. I don't have any experience with a fuel injected
engine, but with a carburetor getting 10 would be quite good.

If your purpose is a "farm truck" that doesn't go very far, the
fuel mileage doesn't matter so much.

The IH 392 was a medium duty truck engine that made its way down into the light
duty trucks, most of those ended up in Loadstars.
I'd love to be able to get an IH pickup that wasn't all rusted out, they were
super cool.

My favorite 454 story is how one was pulling an empty stock trailer up a
long grade, with little or no muffler, grunting and groaning. (about
1995, so it was an 88 or 89 pickup)  I was driving the 66 IH 1500 with
probably 8000 lb of cargo up the same grade, passing him effortlessly,
then when I got beside him I stomped the pedal,  the back 2 barrels of
the 392 opened up, the front end of the old 1500 rose up 3-4 inches and
we accelerated pretty fast for a truck going uphill.  no grunting or

miles on it.  It was originally a 304.  No way it would stand up and
take off like that with the 304.

GIven a choice between a IH 3/4 ton with 392 4 bbl and a 454 in a gm

minimal issues (except for deathcool rotted head gasket I replaced),

I think the 454 was mostly directed at those who would be towing larger

not be a huge consideration given how far down it is on depreciation,

Part of the reason is it is just nicer to drive something newer that
does not need much work.
Another part of the reason is that my younger son was driving even

Supercrew on to him before it was totally worn out.
So, I watched the local ads for used trucks for a while and finally

The temptation is to buy fancier than one truly needs and I ended up

I just bought SWMBO a new Mazda CX-5. Only the second new car I've ever
owned. 0.9% financing was just too tempting. Basically free money, apart
from the depreciation (which doesn't really matter if you plan to keep the
vehicle 10-15 years, as we do).
