Re: [MBZ] Oil Extractor

That does look like a good idea! I have one of these on the Cessna -
https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/safOilDrainValves_06-00637.php
which makes an oil change on it easy - push up and rotate and the oil comes
out. The oil in the Cessna gets changed more often than the truck, so even
at the inflated aircraft price it is worth it.
The truck with it's once a year oil change (~ 7,000 miles) is questionable
for spending money on replacing the drain plug, but I think you could find
the parts for even less.

fittings or drill and tap the plug if it is big enough and suck the oil

Suggest you try it. On the first go round, suck oil out from the
dipstick. Then pull the plug to see how much is left to drain out. If it
is minimal, then that should mean it is workable. Any idea if the
dipstick points into the deepest sump on the pan?

Home despot, lows and HF all want $5-7 for plastic bucket with a lid
now.   The sad thing is that they will collapse with vacuum.   I can get
Brill icing buckets form the grocery bakery for the price of washing
them out.

I like the idea of using a 20 lb propane tank.   the dumps are littered
with them.  SHould be able to find one for free.   Most refrigerant
tanks are pretty small for a Diesel.  I like my 3 gal fire
extinguisher.  It never gets more than half full, and there is lots of
headspace so pil does not get sucked into vacuum source.   A 30 or 40 lb
propane tank would make a nice one, but they would be heavy.

If you get an old tank of some kind (refrigerant or propane or
something similar) a hose barb and a few feet of rigid plastic tubing
are $5 if that.  Shop vac you have.

I've been using an electric sump pump for years, with some rigid plastic pipe
from the hardware store, empty into an old cat litter bucket.

Now that I have a vacuum pump, I tried to use an empty 30 lb refrigerant
cylinder last change, but that failed. I think the hose was collapsing, so I
need to refine that a bit more.

Here is something I haven’t seen us discuss in a hot minute: oil extractors.

Which is the best? Seem to remember that Topsiders were lauded at some point in
the past.

Here is what I found during a web search:

https://www.hqtext.com/top-5-best-fluid-evacuators/
Top 5 Best Fluid Evacuators in 2020 Reviews

http://liquivac.com/
The web page for the extractor Dan mentioned.

Another LiquiVac, which, most likely, is intended
for larger applications.

Make a top sucker from a 5 gallon bucket? the airplane holds up to 12 qts.
- (rarely add more than 10 though) - I drain it into a 5 gallon bucket.
It's high enough that getting under is not an issue.

How much does it cost to make a Wilton oil drainer?

From that web page:

H ... I guess I'll have to use something else to drain the oil from
our Kenworth's 41 quart oil pan. Actually, I have a 12 VDC pump I use to
pre- and post-lube the Chevette engine on our generator set which would
great for that.

I recently changed the oil on the BRV and drained it from below for two
reasons:

- The BRV is high enough I can crawl underneath it
to get to both the drain plug and the oil filter

- I forgot about the Topsider I have

You can find out by sucking the oil out and then remove the pan's drain
plug to see if any additional comes out.

I got an empty refrigerant tank (upgrade from the old plastic gas can that
would collapse a bit), a hose barb, and a few feet of rigid polyethylene?
tubing. Drilled holes in the tank for the barb and a shop vac hose. Total cost
maybe $3. Takes about one beer to empty the sump while you sit and watch.

I had Topsiders years ago, and in fact I still have the two “cans” from them I
use to store waste oil until I can take it to FLAPS and dump it. I hated having
to deal with taking the pump part off, finding a place to store it, making sure
the O ring didn’t get lost, etc., etc. When I found that plastic one at Lowe’s
one day I jumped on it right away and have never looked back.

Re: [MBZ] Oil Extractor

2020-03-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Depends on if you want to spend $80 up or $10.  (allowing 2x inflation
for Wilton's $5 oil extractor.)

I went in between, with a $10 fire SS Soda water extinguisher and a $10
HF vacuum device.

For big bucks, the topsider is it.

Here is something I haven’t seen us discuss in a hot minute: oil
extractors.

Which is the best? Seem to remember that Topsiders were lauded at some
point in the past.

That is exactly what I had...until boy child borrowed it and I never saw it
again.

Thanks for the validation, Dan.

I’ve had Topsiders and others, and I found Topsiders to be a PITA to deal with
because of the all the parts you have to keep track of. I have used one of
these for a number of years now and been very pleased:

I bought mine at Lowe’s, not sure if they still carry them. There are two
sizes, I have the two gallon one. Works great, easy to store and use, don’t
have to worry about rust or removing a big honking hand pump when I want to
transport it, etc…

When or if it pukes I’ll break down and buy one of the big professional ones,
but for now I’ve been very happy with it and have owned it for easily 10 years,
if not more.
