Agreed. I was thinking that as well. I knew I was going to have to replace them
anyway, so I might was well do it now.

Got the AC blower installed this morning so that’s dealt with. Got some new
batteries in the key fob and reprogrammed it and it’s working. I need to take a
look at the front brakes, as the wear indicator light has been coming on since
I bought the car. I know the rears are good, so the fronts may need some pads.

Three day weekend coming up, time to get the Finnie finished or close to it and
spend some more time getting this thing totally sorted.

Re: [MBZ] Plugging Tires

2019-05-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I discovered the glue trick when I rented a back hoe with 18 ply tires,
during a building tear down. Managed to collect 16 nails in one tire, less
in the other 3, so, by mid afternoon, I had a rented reach backhoe with 4
flat tires [big ones] and rendered un-serviceable.
Rental contract said, I would be charged for picking up the tractor with
flat tires [$$ expensive pickup] So, I went to FLAPS and stocked up on
plug materials, pulled nails, plugged the tires, had a job air compressor
to air them up. It worked, back in business in about 1 hr. I clipped the
plug part sticking out of the tires and when rental was collected, it drove
onto their delivery truck, rental company never complained, so saved my
bacon. Tire pressure on the backhoe was 90 psi, so if it was going to leak,
it would have.

That makes sense. But don’t I have to ream the hole before I put the plug in?

No, leave the pressure in the tire. If it does go low before you get the
plug in, you'll have to pump it back up so the tread is stiff enough that
you can push the plug in.

Pretty much my thought.

Should I let most of the pressure out of the tire before I pull the nail out?

It’s been easily 40 years since I plugged a tire. I have no recollection of the
process...

One time I remembered there was an old blade stowed in the handle of my Stanley
knife so I used the old one and threw it away.
Now that I've got a box of single edge razors for my razor scraper, six cents
worth of razor blade would do the job.

In my new nokian, I think one of the regular plugs would have been fine,
but they spooked me by saying it could not be fixed.   So I ordered the
mushroom patch/plug to be sure something would hold.   But it was about
1/4 of the way in from the shoulder, so a plug would have worked just fine.

I've seen pics of old Monkey Grip kits that included a hot clamp. IIRC, you put
fuel in the clamp and lit it.
I can remember my dad helping me patch my bike tire, and he lit the glue. It

I'm suddenly reminded of a bicycle tire leak detector I bought in the 1980s.
It's a screened container, about the diameter of a Carmex tub but half as tall,
with tiny styrofoam beads in it. You blow the tire up to 100psi, and slowly
spin the tire past the container, and the beads dance when the pinhole goes
past. It only works for gross leaks that aren't quite gross enough to feel
blowing on your face, but it sounded good in principle, and I think I only paid
about a dollar for it.

I had a screw in a new nokian on the van within a day.   Tire shop
refused to plug or patch it.  They claimed it was too near the
shoulder.   I ordered a mushroom plugs from fleabay and patched it
myself.   It is fine.   I bought a new can of cement from the FLAPS to
use with the mushroom plug.  I had a little trouble getting the tar
broken down and dismounted.   Once the tar was off, it was pretty
simple.   The muchroom patch combines the properties of a patch and a
plug.   Belt and suspenders.

come out?

And if you wanna do it Okie-Q style, check for bubbles using a cup of

I had a tire plugged by our local service station in Calhan, Colorado and
thereafter had many problems with it leaking.

This is what finally solved my leaking tire problem and is the only way I
will fix tires now.

Never had an issue.

A real tire shop will remove tire from rim and patch the inside, this is
superior, but the DIY plugs are fine.

Re: [MBZ] Plugging Tires

2019-05-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
The gooey cord plugs are all the same as far as I know.
I bought a kit at WalMart with a rat tail rasp, plug inserter, and 3-4 plugs.
Worked great. After the plugs were used up, I went back and bought a pack of
plugs.
Probably have 5-10 plugs left, haven't needed it in years.
Hardest part about using it is cleaning the goo off your shears after you cut
the excess off.

There are a number of places on the east side of Tampa (lower socio-economic
area) that sell lots and lots of decent used tires. I might try one of them or
see if any of them have some cheep tires I can toss on this thing. Because it
uses such big tires they’re not common nor cheap. 275/55 R17, I think.

Go to a local shop, the nationals have some sort of policy where they
can't plug tires sometimes if they could present a hazard, some states
also won't allow plugs so it presents a liability for them.  I had a
trailer tire that Firestone refused to plug, the guy told me to take it
down the road to a local shop and they fixed it.

I realize this is just a ploy on the part of the tire dealers to sell more
tires, however, as this is a beater vehicle I’m not about to drop any coin on
new tires unless they’re absolutely necessary.

So my question is this:

Are the DIY tire plugging kits a realistic alternative? Is there anything I
