So a few weeks ago I sold my John Deere 3032e compact tractor I bought
new. It was 32hp with 25 at the pto.  I only put 40 hours on it during
the 3.5 years I had it so I figured I would just sell it.  As soon as I
did, I regretted it so I started searching for a replacement.  I was not
sure if I wanted an older full size more powerful tractor, or another
compact like I had.  I looked at a bunch, and bent Curleys ear on the
subject and finally decided while I would like to have a big tractor, I
really would probably prefer another compact.  I decided I wanted a more
modern unit rather than something from the 70's or 80's .  I wanted a
compact that was about the same size as the JD, but wanted more power
and capabilities.  I ended up buying a 05 New Holland boomer something
or other.  It is 31hp with 25 or 26 at the PTO so engine wise it is
about the same.  The JD as it turns out was pretty basic.  It had a 2
range where as the NH has 3 range.  The NH has a quick detach front end
loader than can be removed from the tractor in about 5 minutes or less.
The JD is not removable.  The NH has 2 PTO's, one on the bank and a mid
PTO so it will take a belly mower.  The JD just had 1 PTO.  The NH has
adjustable 3pt arms on the back so you dont have to be lined up exactly
with whatever you are mounting.  The JD did not so it was a pain to hook
anything up.  The NW has the universal skid steer type quick attach
bucket so will take a wide variety of attachments that can be obtained
anywhere.  The JD had its own unique system that would only take JD
attachments.  The loader and bucket on the NH is WAY more heavy duty
than the JD.  in fact, the whole tractor just seems way more heavy duty
than the JD.  The true test came when I tried lifting a car.  The NH
lifted the ass end of a 126 with EASE just off engine idle.  Lifted it
like it was nothing. The JD would sometimes under just the right
conditions lift the back of a 124 or 201 very slowly with the engine
fully revved up.  Just for grins I tried lifting the front end of a
240D, and it lifted that also just fine.  No way the JD would be able to
do that since its the heavy end of the car.

So, bottom line with JD you are paying for the name.  Their compacts
seem much more light weight to me. I am betting even brands such as
Mahindra, Branson, Kioti, LS, and others would beat a JD.  I am not sure
about Kubota. I know they are supposed to be good but I think they are
price about as high as JD.

It has a diff Lock that you stomp with your left heel to engage. I
skidded logs with the post hole digger on the 3 pt, chain to the T of
the digger, balanced on rear wheels. stomp the diff lock and go. It
would skid huge logs in snow that way. Way more than it shoulda been
able to do. 32" dia red oaks 30-40 feet long. One white oak log was
almost 60' long, growing in a deep ravine. Post hole digger was a
safety to keep the tractor from flipping over backwards, climbing the
ring gear. It also allowed me to shift weight between front and back
axles, so I could lift the front end, and get all the traction on the
rear axle. This was 1530, 1975 farm version of the same driveline.

So far I am leaning toward the JD 301, wonder it I could get it for
$5k. Check my other email for a JD 302. How do you get fork
attachments for these things? With my current one that will be
departing tomorrow if I go thru with it, it has a quick attach loader.

You can probably get the IH for less too. It has been for sale a long
time. But, if I had the cash, I might go for the JD too.

So it looks like I’m fixing to sell my 3 year old JD which I have
only put 42 hours on. I have literally only had it out of the barn
maybe 3-4 times in the last year. Now I’m starting to think I don’t
want to sell it but the old boy already has a loan going at his bank.
I guess this way I will pay off the rest of my 0% loan to JD and have
some cash left and not have a monthly payment on something I am not
using that much. So that is why a while back I was talking about
cheaper tractors. I think I still need on around. As we discussed
before I prefer diesel and prefer one with a loader, but what about
if I found one without a loader and added one later? Or would I be
money ahead getting to whole thing at once. I think I want to spend
about $4-5k on one if possible. Or I might just wait and get one
later. Here are a few I have seen for sale. Some of these are more

2656 International Tractor With Loader

https://fortsmith.craigslist.org/grd/d/2656-international-tractor/6502019384.html

Good tractor, but the hydrostatic still scares me.  maybe other know
more about the workings/cost to rebuild, but a clutch, pressure plate
and throwout bearing are cheaper.  No concerns about gas for the few
hours you use it.  do a formal or informal compression test.  That is
a good loader.  Other than the hydrostat, a great tractor and fair price.

Mitsubishi Tractor

https://tulsa.craigslist.org/grd/d/mitsubishi-tractor/6543071684.html

About the same as what you have.  rode hard and put up wet. overpriced

FORD 4000 Tractor w/Front end loader

https://tulsa.craigslist.org/grd/d/ford-4000-tractor-front-end/6541897833.html

Decent tractor, it or the IH should be big enough to pick up small to
medium size MBs   To me, both it and the Mitsu are was overpriced.
more like $2500-3500 tractors.

Good farm tractor

https://fayar.craigslist.org/grd/d/good-farm-tractor/6543546303.html
JD301 was the most popular backhoe tractor around 1970.  It is the
same as a JD1530, with heavier front and rear axles and industrial
(heavy) loader vs the farm loader.  Check a price guide, but I'd guess
the price is pretty close.  You most likely can get your money out of
it as long as the paint is decent anytime you want to sell it.  A JD
is always the easiest to sell.

Kubota L235 4wd tractor with loader, box blade, and mower

https://littlerock.craigslist.org/grd/d/kubota-l235-4wd-tractor-with/6546328399.html

Pretty much what you are selling with orange paint, and a lot less
tied up.   Good demand for Orange paint too... at resale time.
not big enough to do more.

https://topeka.craigslist.org/grd/d/1986-fordwd-tractor/6546326628.html

overpriced mini tractor.  Pass   Buy the Kubota over this one

Ford 3910 Diesel Tractor w/ Loader

Pass  Buy the JD 301 over this

3600 Ford tractor

https://springfield.craigslist.org/grd/d/3600-ford-tractor/6545710603.html

gone.  probably worse than the 3910.

Ford 1310 4x4 tractor / plow

https://springfield.craigslist.org/grd/d/fordx4-tractor-plow/6539155463.html

also gone

Case tractor

Pass Get the JD301 or the IH

Front loader tractor

https://stlouis.craigslist.org/grd/d/front-loader-tractor/6534949529.html

Industrial version of MF 35  Good tractor  Looks like it has new tires
on the rear. $2000.  it is a good buy compared to most of the others,
but only 35 HP.  Might lift a 201.  It is a contender.  Industrial
loader is always better.

Ford 1910 4x4 Tractor 4x4

https://stlouis.craigslist.org/grd/d/fordx4-tractor-4x4/6523069764.html

Not much improvement than what you have.  less tied up

International Harvester Tractor with Backhoe and front loader

No 3 pt.

Industrial version of MF 35 Good tractor Looks like it has new tires
on the rear. $2000. it is a good buy compared to most of the others,
but only 35 HP. Might lift a 201. It is a contender. Industrial
loader is always better.

So it looks like I’m fixing to sell my 3 year old JD which I have only
put 42 hours on. I have literally only had it out of the barn maybe
3-4 times in the last year. Now I’m starting to think I don’t want to
sell it but the old boy already has a loan going at his bank. I guess
this way I will pay off the rest of my 0% loan to JD and have some
cash left and not have a monthly payment on something I am not using
that much. So that is why a while back I was talking about cheaper
tractors. I think I still need on around. As we discussed before I
prefer diesel and prefer one with a loader, but what about if I found
one without a loader and added one later? Or would I be money ahead
getting to whole thing at once. I think I want to spend about $4-5k on
one if possible. Or I might just wait and get one later. Here are a
few I have seen for sale. Some of these are more that I have to spend
but might have to pony it up a bit. If anybody cares to look at these
and let me know what you think. My JD was my first tractor and I know
next to nothing about what might be a good deal or a POS

Makes sense. You are better off to buy tractor and loader assembled.
it will cost you more to put a loader on a tractor. you'd pay at least
$2500 for a loose loader and probably $500 to $1000 putting it on,
unless it came off the same model of tractor.

JD 301 was the most popular backhoe in the early 70s. This is an old
puppy like the ford. Check compression, etc. It is pretty much the
same as a 1530 JD, but with the industrial front end, loader and rear
end. That is all good for your use. The 3 cyl idles with a lope, that
is normal. It is a bit pricey, but you can resell a JD easier than
anything else, so as long as the paint stays good, you could probably
get your money out of it when you sell. Over all, so far the IH and
the JD are my licks, with the frod bing a pick if it was 3500.

Looks like you're about right. I don't live in big farm country but I could
find a couple 65hp class examples for around $7500.
Once Kaleb gets done with copart he won't need to bush hog anymore, there won't

Plus the cost of keeping your own equipment...
Maintenance, repairs, storage. That was the part that really got me. Oh and for
us we get to have a much better excavator. A dedicated tracked digger will
perform better than one on the back of a small tractor particularly in its
ability to get into small places.

It depends upon how many times you need to use it:

15000
- = 41.67
 360

So if you need to use it more than 41 times, it's cheaper to buy it.

2018-02-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The tractors I am talkin about set up with loader and forks could
probably be had for 5-10K I'd use a number of about $7500 for a good
tractor with good paint, loader and a set of new long forks. I have
not looked at prices for years, so I may be off. If Kaleb sez he is
interested, I will start lookin.

So that would be about 20 days. But it won't dig a trench like the
excavator will. I think Kaleb is mostly needing mowing and moving
cars, with the occasional loading an engine onto a truck or trailer.

It depends upon how many times you need to use it:

15000
- = 41.67
360

So if you need to use it more than 41 times, it's cheaper to buy it.

I like Curt's idea, probably far less $ over time, but you will have lost
the ability to use the equipment immediately and will have to wait or
schedule the work.

Maybe the compromise would be getting a purpose-built thing to do the most
common tasks (probably move / tow vehicles around the ranch) and then rent
the equipment to do the other things that can be scheduled (bush-hog,
trench digging, grading, etc).

Sounds to me like a Unimog that you can use to tow / pull / push would be
the ticket? Find a rusty beat up example with no attachments but sound
engine / trans / brakes?

The commercial JD (yellow) had similar models - but I know some of
them got heavy duty front axle and support a front loader better
than the similar size "farm" tractors. I don't know model

Re: [MBZ] Tractors

2018-02-18 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Planetaries don't go bad often, but when they do, look out, especially
if it says Cat on it.In another life, I sold parts for machines with
planetaries. I saw people who wrote checks for $100,000 to $150,000
machines blanch at 2 things. Not a crate engine, not an allison
transmission, not a $1000 tire (in 1975) but at the cost of fixing a
planetary and at buying a replacement belt drive for a dry spreader.
(think salt truck) That belt drive was a 2" dia steel shaft with a
roller driven by a worm drive, like a Braden winch, but on the scale of
a 50,000 lb or 100,000 lb winch. The bronze gear was about 10" diameter
and weighed 30 or 40 lbs. (and this was not cat equipment. Add 50 to
100% for the cat and their yellow paint.)

For Kaleb's use a full size farm tractor would let him pick up cars and
move them around with a loader and forks. A 4440 JD with MFD, loader
and forks would allow him to grades driveways, move rock and dirt, pick
up cars, mow, pull fence posts, dig post holes or drive posts with a
auger or post driver. They are also good for lifting shingles to the
roof if he ahas to roof one of his houses. THe MFD is not necessary,
but with the weight of the car on a loader, it will make getting around
easier at the cost of not being able to turn as tight as a wide front
tractor with undriven wheels. So far there is no large livestock on
rancho costa plenny, so there is no need for a backhoe to bury
carcasses. A full size farm tractor will do everything I can imagine
him needing to do, and the things that he has said he wants to do. The
current JD is nice but it was expensive and is too small to pick up and
move whole cars to the back 40. A full size JD does not have a
planetary. the final drive of full size farm tractors, whether JD, IH,
Case, or white don't fail very often, even with 10 or 20,000 hours. The
transmissions are all most as rugged. The IH 6 cyl engine is legendary
for its longivity, on average, probably 50 % better than JD or more.
(10-12,000 hours) Many (probably most) IH tractors from the 70s have
not been overhauled. not so the JDs. By now most 4340s and 4440s have
had at least one overhaul. A 4020 may have been overhauled 2 or 3 times
if it has been in constant use.

I think a midrange JD with a loader and lots of weight (barrels filled
with concrete) on the 3 pt might pick up and move whole cars. I had a
5500, and i am 90% sure it could do the job if it had a heavy duty
enough loader and rear weight to counterbalance. It was 70hp (more than
needed for Kaleb;s work) and had MFD. It was a great tractor for my
purpose (mowing and spraying). The 5300-5500 are large frame yanmars,
where Kaleb's current yanmar is medium size for yanmar. (All are a lot
smaller than a real full size, JD, ) Everyone in farm country knows how
to work on these models of JD because they are everywhere. Not so the
Yanmars painted green. I don't know what the model is of the smallest
of the JD 5000 series is, but they all should have the same frame and
carrying capacity, so the critical thing about them is the capacity of
the loader. 35 HP is probably enough but if you can get more for the
same money then the HP is "free" (at the cost of fuel consumption). For
Kaleb's occasional use, the fuel consumption is not a big deal.

A JD 310 or higher industrial loader tractor would work too, but parts
are scarce and expensive, except for the ones that are used on farm
tractors too.

The thing is that a real JD such as I suggested will run for thousands
of hours, they are plentiful, and parts are all over. Even FLAPS has
parts for JD4020, 4340, 4440. JD dealers are all over. Other colors
are less pervasive. I think I may have seen a kioti dealer. somewhere,
a long time ago. I drive by JD dealers all the time, all over the
country. CaseIH dealers are less pervasive, but all over the country.
Other colors are hit and miss. Kaleb already knows how to find his JD
dealer and spend money there!

I always thought the common complaints on DynaHoes were that they were slow and
the brakes always need fixing. (aside from all the joys of owning an old worn

Those have repeated and expensive breakdowns. Worn out cylinders
Hydraulic hoses breaking, dumping gallons and gallons of oil on the
ground. Price a tire before you buy one of those old lemons.

Buy a JD 4020, 4430 or 4440. A rear tire on one of those is scary, but
the price of a tire and mounting on the cat loader will give you heart
failure.

A good JD of these models will maintain its value or increase in value.
They are plentiful as F150s, and durable as all get out.

Re: [MBZ] Tractors

2018-02-18 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I would recommend an older model with a pre-tier IV engine (not common rail).
The older engine is just like a 300D but with a much simplified IP.
Your Deere probably has the proprietary loader interface so your old loader
attachments won't work on other brands. So look for a new loader with the Skid
Steer Quick Attach (SSQA) interface for buckets, forks, etc. SSQA is pretty
standard on all other brand.
All colors (brands) make good tractors and all make a few lemons. I would
recommend whatever brand has a good (smart, honest) dealer nearby. They are
all Asian-made these days.
Talk to neighbors for any word-of-mouth buys as well as online lists.

Re: [MBZ] Tractors

2018-02-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You'll find that tractors hold their value really well so while you'll get most
of what you paid for yours to get something significantly cheaper it'll be
REALLY old. Alternately sometimes you can get a real deal on stuff thats big.
The smaller the tractor is the more valuable it is since the homestead crowd is
into them. Something like a big payloader doesn't hold value as well but since
it started as big money one thats from your lifetime will still tend to command
a high price.
I'd like to have a loader for our farm and would normally go oil but I think
we'll probably end up going new. Yours is probably still worth one or two
thousand less than you paid for it. At that price I can't see why anybody would
ever buy a used one but they do.

4020 JD or 4430 or 4440 JD
As much as I like IH, they have more weight on the front axle and are
great for heavy 3pt hitch work, but with more weight to the rear, the JD
is better for loader work.

Why these 3 models? the 4020 is the 300D (617) of the tractor world.
The others are the most common updates of the 4020
Common = new and used parts readily available, used tractors readily
available, and lotsa people who know how to work on them, tractor forums
and more.
Searching for wone of thes is like searching for a shovy malibu
thousands to choose from.

Find one from a retiring farmer who has taken good care of it.

Oh, and DON'T buy one from a stealer.

My dad could talk to you all day about this, or you could go to
http://www.mytractorforum.com/

I used to really like the Massey Ferguson 165, it was my dad's first loader
tractor when I was in high school. Not sure about the lift capacity though.

Or you could get an old worn out articulated wheel loader and put 16' forks on
it, Copart style.

so no badges are obvious. I haven't spent a ton of time on it, just a quick

That one should not be too hard.  On the old narrow front IH the only
really safe way is to hang the front half from a chain hoist.  then
we'd block up the rear half on a roller cart .  You roll the back
half away from the front half.  on those the front half is so top
heavy that trying to block it upresults in a dangerous situation.

Being a two banger, I assume it is a japanese tractor of some sort.
kubota?  I saw a Satoh up for auction one time.  it was the size of a
lawn tractor, but had full cat 1 3 point hitch.  I thought it would
be excellent for a tiller, if I could find a small tiller for it.  I
was not able to go on sale day.  I think it went cheap because the
trans was locked up.

The nice thing about a tractor is you don't so much drop the trans
as roll it backwards...

I may actually be doing this relatively soon. I think I've stumbled
on to what may be an excellent deal on a small diesel tractor with a
loader and a bad clutch. Whats actually bad about it is that it
never disengages... He'd been living with it like that until the
starter solenoid went bad at which point he brought it to the shop.
I got brought in as a tractor expert (its a
motorcycle/snowmobile/4wheeler kind of shop that will take on any
work) and clucked my tongue at it appropriately. I explained the
only way to know what the problem was would require splitting the
tractor and taking a look around. So probably 4 hours of labor just
to see... He's still deciding but I told him I'd give him a grand
for it as it sits. The hydraulics all work, the 2cyl diesel starts
super easy and runs strong. Could be a great deal...
