Re: [MBZ] Walmart: How big is it?

2014-04-07 Thread Hendrik and Fay
It seems to be a vicious cycle, people get paid less (in real terms)
thus have to cut costs.
Purchasing gets concentrated into a few big box stores, these stores
have the power to set lower wages thus the wages drop further.

You get to contribute to the monies going to the employees in one way

Seattle school district has been severely underfunding vocational classes for a
few decades. They had a reputation as dumping grounds, and the administration
wanted to push all kids to universities. Most of the shop teachers and support
staff moved on because they got unfunded. Now that STEM is big, the district
is thinking some more about maybe doing something so that it has employable
products at the end of 14 years.

Other districts had been keeping their programs intact, so they got the extra
state funding that the egg head idiots passed by. In future there will be kids
able to find jobs as nursing assistants, techs and carpenters. That should put
the illegals on notice to vacate the jobs

being developed or re-developed. Maybe in your neck of the woods, but

no real clear reason to be around people with head in sand. Lessee...

even with 200k jobs each month being had. From what I understand,
that is 200k jobs at $10 which ain't gonna hire an old guy, not when
there are 12 young guys waiting for hire and stronger for the
workforce. They see old guy as working maybe 5 years and then leave.
I want my kids to have better job - not me have another job. I

There's a backlash afoot over the disposability of consumer

Re: [MBZ] Walmart: How big is it?

2014-04-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Again the answers to your questions are easy.

A. We (the royal we here) want to pay as little as possible for everything so
we can have more junk. This forces stuff to be made as cheaply as possible
which requires slave wages.

B. 50 years ago there was no need for education since Johnny could just get a
good paying job in the mill. Because of that there wasn't real emphasis on
education in the way there probably should have been. Today we still haven't
made up for the inertia that held us back in that period...

Of course the answers are simple but implementation is difficult.

This Walmart hate-in is not logical.

Around here, we have freedom to go to Walmart or not.  Personally, I'm not
going to blame Walmart if I or others choose to shop there.  Likewise, I'm
not going to blame Walmart if people choose to work there.

The questions we should be asking are: (a) Why aren't there more good
jobs? and (b) Why aren't more people qualified for the available good
jobs?

Do bear in mind however, that the USA likes to export things too and if
everyone bought only goods made in their own country there would be no
exports.

Like it or not, there is a world economy and we do have to try to fit
into it.

Theoretically, if they can do it cheaper, or better, or whatever, then
it does make sense to buy it from them. Hopefully, we too have products
that we are better at and they will buy those from us.

find local businesses who produce the product or sell them. I believe in
keeping my money at home when possible, and while I often pay more for

If we did this Walmart would not go away, but would be seriously diminished, I

Don't shop there. Buy a smaller amount of high quality items. TELL PEOPLE WHAT

that junk and that they can actually live better without it.

An example I'm completely taken with Darn Tough socks http://darntough.com/
made in Vermont they're about the best socks I've ever had. They're Merino wool, warm in
the winter, cool in the summer. I have both the hike/trek and lifestyle.
VERY expensive I pay as much for 1 pair as I'd have paid for a dozen cheap
white tube socks but they're a joy to wear. When I only had one pair I looked

I am not the world's biggest fan of Walmart. I don't know what my wife
buys there but personally about the only things I have acquired from
them in recent times is some Zerex coolant and some Mobil1 oil.

However I will come to their defence again. They are not alone. It does
not seem to matter where I shop these days, the majority of goods seem
to have a Made in China stamp on them.

It is sad but it is true and as I said before, we have done it to
ourselves and there is no easy fix to it.

Big business found cheaper goods and we bought them. We are big time
consumers. The advertising flyers promise good deals on junk we don't
need every day. We buy it and haul it home and store it.

I really don't think you can say it is Walmart's fault.

Re: [MBZ] Walmart: How big is it?

2014-04-04 Thread Randy Bennell
Foreign countries - especially the 3rd world countries tend to
concentrate on science and technical education much more than we do in
the west. They understand that is the way to improving their lot in life.
We tend to be lazy and pat people on the back because they got a liberal
arts degree. Usually much easier to get a degree in sociology or
physcology than in math or engineering or chemistry etc. We don't push
our young people hard enough in grade school and they come out for the
most part not interested in pushing themselves in university. So we get
more and more people with minimal skills who expect a good job without
having to work for it. There are a few gifted souls who find the maths
and sciences easy but not enough of them.
We are no longer able to do what the folks in places like China do. They
manage to produce reasonable copies of things we once made. Often made
by grandmothers sitting on dirt floors. Maybe almost an exaggeration now
but at one time certainly true and maybe still somewhat true for some of
the rougher goods that we see.
I think the USA was once like that but things got to be too good and the
factory workers got unionized and demanded more and more money to do
less and less. The auto industry was a good example. Some of the line
workers that had been on the job for many years commanded silly hourly
wages for what they produced. I think most of us need to accept and
remember that we need to earn the money we are paid and that if we cease
to do so the employer is going to have a problem one way or another.
We have educated too many people in the last few decades in ways that
have not helped us much. Too many business grads and not enough
engineers etc. The business people are just trying to find ways to make
money and most often do not look at what they are doing to the company
or the country. The biggest item on the spreadsheet is usually wages.
How do we cut wages? We outsource to cheaper labour markets like Mexico
and now China. We can build a lawn mower for a whole lot less than when
it was made in Milwaukee (sp?) but soon, we have to wonder who we are
going to sell it to. If the average guy cannot afford a house then he
won't need a lawn mower no matter how cheap he can buy it at Walmart.

We have been sold a bill of goods for a long while. The rise of things
like television permitted the business grads to advertise to the masses
and convince us to buy things whether we needed them or not. Advertising
made us want things that our grandparents and even parents never had and
did not know they needed. We all wanted to live the dream. We wanted
white collar jobs that paid well and we wanted cheap consumer goods.
Well we got what we wanted but it came at the expense of many other
things. The wife and mother has to work outside the home in order to pay
for all of this new stuff. The teachers have to train the children in a
whole lot of things they used to learn at home so they don't have as
much time to concentrate on the 3 R's etc.

None of this is new and I am rambling a bit but as I said before, we
have done it to ourselves and we don't know how to get out of it. People
our age are the ones who can see the problem. I doubt if most of the
younger folks have any idea how things used to be and what they are
missing now. Trades people used to be respected and they for the most
part tried to provide good service and do a good job. Now many of them
work for big companies that contract out through Home Depot. All that
matters is profit. That is driven by the business education folks who
can hire the liberal arts grad cheap etc. . . . . .

I could go on all day but I won't.

My mother did not have a microwave oven, or a dishwasher, or a dryer or
 when I was growing up.
My father earned his way as a sort of jack of all trades. He had a
sawmill and he did construction work. I, as a hobbiest, have 100X the
tools that he ever had. I have tools I have never used and probably
don't even know I have. He had pretty basic stuff but he used it well
and he did fine. He pounded in nails with a hammer. He never owned an
air nailer of any sort, and we are not talking all that long ago. He
died in 1983 at age 63.

i concur, although i was too cheap at the end of the day to buy them and
ended up with johnston murphy instead. that was 25 years ago as i have
so little use for real shoes

for my dad, there was but one brand of shoe, floorchime, but they have
long ago been all imported

my understanding is that most johnston and murphy and many allen edmunds
are now made offshore. really, there is no US shoe industry left as off

above off the top of my head as USA shoes

In my humble opinion Mao may be clinically depressed, which is very
common among people who have lost their jobs. They don't go out and
interview for jobs because of their depressed state. Mao's depressing
philosophy of life that older workers should leave the world for
younger workers is another possible symptom of depression.
The only thing that a person on one of these lists can do to help
another person with similar problems is to tell them where they can get
help. Here is a suggestion for people with problems such as clinical
depression:

Well, one way or the other we all pay.
If Walmart paid higher wages the prices in the store would be higher so
it would cost you more when you bought goods.
(and don't tell me you don't shop there so it does not relate to you -
competition is such that if Walmart's prices were higher, then prices
would likely be higher where you do shop)
You get to contribute to the monies going to the employees in one way or
the other, so at the end of the day, it likely does not matter much.

So stop worrying about things you cannot change and be happy!

I haven't shopped at Wal-Mart in almost 10 years. So, it does bother me to pay
for others beyond what I already give to the government on their abnormal
basis. In the small town where I live, Wal-Mart came in and put other stores
out of business and then as usual raised their prices. Wal-Mart is sort of like
one of the political parties that like to keep citizens poor and beholden to
them in order to get their votes, or in this case a job.
Anyway, if you look around and buy American made products (which you can still
find if you care to look), then Wal-Mart wouldn't be so rich and powerful. Just
my opinion, yours can be yours.

What Roger said.

Walmart came into our small town in Wisconsin and in doing so destroyed a
thriving business district full of small locally owned businesses.

I am still bitter about it to this day, and while I do occasionally shop at
Walmart, it pains me to do so.

Going through my receipts from last year while doing taxes I found that I had
spent a grand total of around $200 at Walmart, a pittance of our total
household spending.

You cannot change it so try not to worry about it.

We can cry aboout China but the fact remains that China did not come to us so
much as we went to them.
All of our MBA grads looked for ways to do things cheaper so that their bonuses
would be bigger.
They are the ones who sold us out. We just went along like sheep happy to get
substandard goods cheaper than what we were accustomed to paying.

We did it to ourselves and I don't think we can lay all of the fault on Walmart.

 What Roger said.

Walmart came into our small town in Wisconsin and in doing so destroyed a
thriving business district full of small locally owned businesses.

I am still bitter about it to this day, and while I do occasionally shop
at Walmart, it pains me to do so.

Going through my receipts from last year while doing taxes I found that I
had spent a grand total of around $200 at Walmart, a pittance of our total
 household spending.

other stores out of business and then as usual raised their prices.
Wal-Mart is sort of like one of the political parties that like to keep
citizens poor and beholden to them in order to get their votes, or in
 this case a job.
Anyway, if you look around and buy American made products (which you can
still find if you care to look), then Wal-Mart wouldn't be so rich and
powerful. Just my opinion, yours can be yours.

You're right of course but the solution is deceptively simple.

Don't shop there. Buy a smaller amount of high quality items. TELL PEOPLE WHAT
YOU'VE DONE. Buy them high quality made in the west (so USA, Canada, Europe)
items so they see how good they are. Help people know that they don't need all
that junk and that they can actually live better without it.

An example I'm completely taken with Darn Tough socks http://darntough.com/
made in Vermont they're about the best socks I've ever had. They're Merino
wool, warm in the winter, cool in the summer. I have both the hike/trek and
lifestyle.
VERY expensive I pay as much for 1 pair as I'd have paid for a dozen cheap
white tube socks but they're a joy to wear. When I only had one pair I looked
forward to the day each week when I get to wear them. Now I have 4 or 5 pairs
and I'm annoyed on the days they're all in the wash. I won't go back to cheap
socks, my feet are too important to me.

Agreed.

Walmart has only given people what they want. As for their personnel polices,
well, that's a whole 'nother issue.

I do what Curt does as much as possible. I try to find high quality, American
made products when I buy something. Better yet, whenever possible, I try to
find local businesses who produce the product or sell them. I believe in
keeping my money at home when possible, and while I often pay more for
something I could get cheaper at Walmart, I know my money is staying close by
and benefitting my local community.

If we did this Walmart would not go away, but would be seriously diminished, I
believe.

Too many Americans have an overstuffed sock drawer, filled with
cheaply made products that fall apart and must be replaced
several times a year, argues Thomas Lee, a co-founder of Goodhew
Socks, based in Chattanooga, Tenn., which asks potential
customers to Trust our Thread Architects, the company's sock

There's a backlash afoot over the disposability of consumer
products, which Americans have taken for granted for 30 years,

Around here, we have freedom to go to Walmart or not. Personally, I'm not

The questions we should be asking are: (a) Why aren't there more good

Re: [MBZ] Walmart: How big is it?

2014-04-03 Thread Scott Ritchey
Maybe I should rephrase the question this way: Why can't North America
(including the US) make competitive consumer products?

This Walmart hate-in is not logical.

Around here, we have freedom to go to Walmart or not. Personally, I'm not
going to blame Walmart if I or others choose to shop there. Likewise, I'm
not going to blame Walmart if people choose to work there.

The questions we should be asking are: (a) Why aren't there more good
jobs? and (b) Why aren't more people qualified for the available good
 jobs?

What does a living wage even mean?

It means stop yer bitchin' and let it be.
I bitch today because I won't ever have a paycheck again but when I
had job I just did what I could do with what I had. Never able to
qualify for mortgage, never borrow money, we ate well, quite healthy,
don't visit doctors, had babies born at home, etc. Yeah - living
wage is always a little bit more, always bitchin'

Maybe a MadeInUSA IPO that okiebenz buys can let the makers know that
we want to buy American. Okiebenz is doing much to work our lives
back to memorable good dayz, perhaps. Somehow the manufacturers need
to see a market ready to buy USA stuff paying decent wage and priced
for everyman.

I can verify that Walmart's in OK send their new employees to the local
welfare office to apply for food stamps and Medicaid.

14. Of the 1.6 million employees, only 1.2% make a living above the
poverty level.
